Karyn is a Boston University School of Law Graduate and currently works as the Founder, Chief Activator, and Systems Entrepreneur at Shift the Prism Advisory. Karyn's journey offers a masterclass on trying new things and being open to new jobs. All from what I call her as, The Master of Legal Financial Services. Karyn and I start in her first year of Law School at Boston University School of Law. Karyn would be one of those people who loved Law School, as she always wanted to be a lawyer and felt that experience was awesome to be a part of. Karyn notes that as a concrete theoretical thinker, the marriage between that and the facts of any given case was the perfect blend, that she would enjoy for the rest of her legal career. She also found the law to be an amazing vehicle to uplift others. We then moved to Karyn's post Law school experiences starting as a corporate attorney in the Big Law setting. She cherished the mentors she had early in her career, laying the foundation and groundwork for the great success that would ensue in her career. Then starting at Citi Bank, Karyn made a conscious decision to continue to gain experiences, being a student for life. For the following 6 years at Citi Bank, she would hold 5 different positions, all with the purpose of adding more value and skills to her arsenal, a prime example of a great approach to anyone's legal career. Finally, we spoke about her time at PNC, recruited for her amazing skills, and continued to hold different positions to gain even more skills. At the end of her career, she would have every job she could in legal financial services, becoming an expert to those interested in the industry. We also spoke about what she does today at Shift the Prism Advisory, advising, consulting, and coaching, supporting founders who impact their communities. This episode is a masterclass on navigating the legal financial services industry and offering as much value as possible to any employer. As Karyn says, this is a lesson in being a student for life—never, ever, stop learning! Mikko is a Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation College of Law Graduate, and currently works as a Board Member of the Denning International Law Advisory Board doing high-impact research for Project Pakistan. Mikko's journey is riveting, spectacular, and full of wisdom as well as being our third international guest and our first law student from the Philippines!Mikko and I started almost a full decade before he decided to go to Law School. After graduating and beginning work as an accountant, Mikko would stay on that path, but life would change forever after a super typhoon hit the Philippines displacing him and losing his house, and his belongings. Mikko would turn to online work, being a link builder, and trying to find his way again. Years previous he wanted to attend law school in the capital of the Philippines but didn't have the money for it. After years of hard work, he would finally be able to get into Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation College of Law.Mikko's first year, due to the pandemic, would be done online, making the transition easy, and loving the work that came with it. But the second year would represent an obstacle, as coming in person, Mikko's grades would drop, and doubt would cause him to almost drop out in that Fall semester. But after finding a mentor through a friend, Mikko would stick with Law school, ending Law school ranked 3rd among his peers. Mikko and I took a deep dive into his experience at the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition, which remains the highlight of his Law School journey. After 9 months of preparation, Mikko and his teammates would travel to the Netherlands for an amazing experience. Mikko would speak on this experience at great length, talking about the competition, and the great camaraderie with his fellow competitors making connections, and friends he still speaks to today. Finally, Mikko stresses to never give up, as you never want to close those potential doors that are on the other side of Law School. Additionally, Mikko has started a podcast of his own, the first episode linked below, all surrounding his love for international law and discussion about the international law issues in the world today. Steve is a UConn School of Law Graduate and currently works as the organizing and Network Director at the People's Parity Project. This episode dives into one of the most compelling journeys yet, showcasing how winding roads often lead to powerful destinations. Steve's story embodies the very essence of this podcast: that there's no straight pathway into the legal field, only your unique journey! We kicked things off nearly two decades before law school ever crossed Steve's mind. A Boston University chemistry major, Steve made a bold decision to leave school and join the US Army. Later, he returned to finish his degree and launched a career as a researcher and scientist. But it was a legal struggle with the US Army that opened his eyes to the power of the law—sparking a passion he didn't yet realize. While still immersed in his scientific career, Steve dedicated more of his time to veterans' legal services. Gradually, his love for science waned as his commitment to law grew. Eventually, Steve took the plunge and enrolled at UConn School of Law.Law school wasn't smooth sailing. Just as Steve began his 1L year, the birth of his child and a major car accident set him back by a month. Yet, he powered through, leveraging the discipline and problem-solving skills he'd honed as a scientist. Our conversation reveals his evolving interest in public interest law, a field that calls to him deeply. Steve's clear sense of purpose has been his compass, helping him find joy and resilience through every challenge.Today, Steve is part of the People's Parity Project, rallying law students nationwide to make real changes in public interest law. From veterans' rights to systemic reform, Steve's work inspires others to bring about meaningful change. His journey reaffirms something I've long believed: anyone, regardless of background, can step into the field of law and make an impact. Scott is a Baylor University School of Law Graduate and currently works as the Founder and Trial Lawyer of Snellings PLLC. Ever wonder what it's like to pivot from aspiring doctor to a lawyer, only to face one of life's biggest challenges just as you open your own law firm? In this episode, I sit down with Scott Snellings, who shares a deeply personal and professional story about reinvention, resilience, and creating meaningful success on his terms. We kick things off at Baylor University, where Scott initially set his sights on becoming a doctor. With a background in psychology and an EMT license under his belt, he seemed destined for medicine—until a D in Biology pushed him to rethink his path. This unexpected detour led him straight into the rigorous world of Baylor University School of Law, a completely different animal from any learning experience he'd encountered.Rather than chasing a niche specialization, Scott honed the meta-skill of learning itself—a decision that later became one of his biggest assets. His early interest in product liability landed him a role at Hartline, Dacus, Barger, Dreyer, and Kern, where he learned how to strategize, solve problems independently, and develop what he calls “the human side of the law.” Four years later, Scott decided it was time to bet on himself and open Snellings PLLC.But just two months into this new chapter, life threw him a curveball: he needed a kidney transplant. In a remarkable twist, his best friend turned out to be a perfect match. Scott returned to the firm with renewed energy and purpose, using his experience to shape a company culture grounded in core values and long-term vision. We also dive into The Driven Crowd Podcast, where Scott interviews high achievers to extract lessons on ambition, success, and personal growth. The podcast has not only enriched his personal development but has also become a powerful referral engine for his business. This conversation is more than just a career story—it's a masterclass in resilience, continuous learning, and building a life aligned with your values. Scott's journey from potential doctor to lawyer, through personal challenges and entrepreneurial success, is one you won't forget.Tune in to discover how setbacks can become turning points, and why core values are critical whether you're leading a law firm or hosting a podcast.Don't miss this episode—Scott's story will leave you inspired, motivated, and ready to tackle your own challenges head-on.Check out all of Scott's content, including his podcast and blog, below!Scott's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-snellingsScott's Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1945495Scott's Blog: https://snellingsinjurylaw.com/blog/Be sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Chris is a University of Maine School of Law Graduate and works as Falcon Foward Group's owner. This episode is packed with grit, purpose, and transformation. Chris's story is one of the most unique and inspiring journeys we've featured yet—a story that begins not in the halls of law school, but on the tarmac, maintaining aircrafts for the U.S. Air Force. At first, Chris had no interest—or natural talent—for mechanical work. But life had other plans. He discovered a love for troubleshooting and developed a knack for solving complex problems quickly, a skill that would serve him well beyond the Air Force.Eventually, Chris earned a degree in Organizational Leadership from Columbia Southern University. The knowledge he gained wasn't just academic; it armed him with insight into the systemic issues plaguing his workplace. His time in the Air Force wasn't without hardship—Chris experienced whistleblower retaliation from a squad leader, an event that led him to retire but also ignited a new passion: the law.In 2019, Chris entered the University of Maine School of Law, driven by a tragic loss—two members of his former unit took their own lives that same year. For Chris, it was clear: the system was broken, and he was determined to fix it. Despite battling imposter syndrome in his first year, Chris found purpose in the law, filing public records requests and even influencing legislation. His legislation would push the Department of Defense towards releasing suicide data, a move that shed light on the crisis facing service members. As a Law Student in his 40s, Chris is living proof that it's never too late to reinvent yourself. His journey and fight for justice is far from over, and as he puts it, "There's still a lot of work to do."Today, Chris is the host of the 20 Years Done podcast and the founder of Falcon Forward Law Group, where he fights tirelessly for veterans nationwide. His energy and relentless advocacy bring a powerful new dimension to this episode.Tune in to hear Chris's inspiring story firsthand, from aircraft troubleshooting to legislative victories—and everything in between. M.C. is a UCLA School of Law Graduate and works as a partner at Complex Appellate Litigation Group. In this episode, I sit down with the unstoppable M.C., whose journey is a masterclass in resilience, reinvention, and relentless curiosity. Starting as an aspiring writer and poet before pivoting to law, M.C.'s path took an unexpected turn when she enrolled at UCLA School of Law. We talk about how that first year—the toughest by far—tore her down and built her back up, immersing her in the "language of law" and reshaping her vision for the future. But what really stands out is how M.C. figured out what not to do in law through trial experience—a revelation that ultimately sharpened her focus on what mattered most to her.We dive into her early days at Irell & Manella and Horvitz & Levy, where she was truly “thrown into the fire,” working on cases right out of the gate. This baptism by fire not only honed her skills but also fueled her confidence. Erin is a Tulsa College of Law Graduate and works as the Founder and CEO of Powerhouse Lawyers. Erin's story is all about pivots, resilience, and becoming what she calls the "CEO of her life." In this episode, we dive into her unconventional path from an uncertain undergrad to the founder of Powerhouse Lawyers, where she empowers women in the legal world through community and connections. We begin with Erin's leap into law school, not out of passion, but because, in her words, she simply didn't know what else to do. What's fascinating is that, despite her initial ambivalence, Erin fell in love with the intellectual challenge law school provided. Key to her success? A strong support system that helped her navigate those rigorous years with unexpected ease. But Erin's story doesn't follow a straight line. Post-graduation, things got rocky. It took nearly a year to land her first legal job, and even then, she felt uninspired. Despite completing law school, nothing in the legal field ever clicked for her. This became a recurring theme in her career, which she discusses candidly in our conversation — maybe the law wasn't her true calling after all.And yet, every great story has its breakthrough moment. Erin eventually found her passion outside the traditional legal path, founding Powerhouse Lawyers to create a network for women lawyers seeking more out of their careers and lives. In this episode, Erin shares actionable insights on personal development: asking the right questions, gaining clarity on what you want, and cultivating the mindset necessary for transformative change. We also dive into her Powerhouse Lawyers retreat, where like-minded women step away from the daily grind to reflect on their goals and reimagine what's possible. Erin's journey is a testament to the power of reinvention — proof that it's never too late to pivot toward something meaningful.Erin's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-gernerErin's Podcast: https://powerhouselawyers.transistor.fmPowerhouse Lawyers Retreat: https://www.eringerner.com/powerhouse-lawyers-retreat-septemberBe sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. It's the 14th September 1896, just a short distance from Brisbane, on Australia's east coast, and the sun is rising on Minjerribah Island, the ancestral land of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait ‘Quandamooka People'. It's an area rich in Aboriginal culture. It's also a colonised area, steeped in racism and division, and this is where the murder of six year old ‘Cassey' takes place. To investigate this tragic crime and its contemporary resonances, Lucy Worsley is joined by Guest Detective Vanessa Turnball Roberts. Vanessa is a proud Bundjalung Widubul-Wiabul First Nations woman, a Law Graduate and recipient of the Australian Human Rights Medal for her work around the adoption laws and forcible removal of First Nations children. Lucy hears that our case begins at ‘Myora Mission School', an institution set up by white settlers who wish to establish a ‘reformatory' for Aboriginal children. In reality, it's part of a wider ‘management' system aimed at controlling the First Nations population. The children are being trained in domestic duties to work as servants for white families. There's also evidence that some of the children – including six-year-old Cassey - have been forcibly taken from their homes. Whilst the children are under the supervision of their matron – a Dutch settler called Marie Christensen – Cassey is killed. Marie's cruel and fatal actions are witnessed by First Nations women Budlo Lefu, Topsy Mcleod and Polly Turnbull who bravely speak out on Cassey's behalf.Professor Rosalind Crone from the Open University travels to Australia to visit the site of the Mission School and meet local tribal elders. As the tragic murder unfolds, Vanessa explains that the subject which really underpins everything in this case, is Australia's ‘Stolen Generations', the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities. Although this began during the earliest days of white settlement, Vanessa – herself, a survivor of the ‘Family Policing System' – reveals, it is not a thing of the past. 'Japa' is a Nigerian slang which means 'running swiftly out of dangerous situations' and is widely used to describe migrating from the country, Nigeria in this case, in search of greener pastures. Everyday, Nigerians leave in droves for the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and a list of other countries including neighbouring Niger. Libya has become a connecting hub to Europe. The uniqueness of this concept is also in the irregularity and the conditions within which their ‘travelling out' takes place. In 2021, the World Bank statistics indicated 50% of Nigerians youth yearned to migrate. This begs the question: Do they truly understand the dynamics of migrating and the new host countries? Do they have the tools and mindset necessary for life in a new country? How shall they survive and assimilate in the new environment? In what manner are they leaving the country? Are they being trafficked? These and many other questions are top of mind in this endemic global phenomenon. Taking the global situation into consideration requires an examination of the economic, social and political struggles and issues, particularly during the current global endemic, which is affecting the world in many unprecedented ways. In this episode of Thinking Reimagined, Mrs. Comfort Agboko (Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Lagos Zonal Command), Deborah Duropitan (Tech Expert, Law Graduate), Jerry Adelu (Entrepreneur, Migrant Returnee), Chylian Azuh (Founder, Female Return Migrant Network), Peter Armand Boyo (Director, Actor, Filmmaker and Brand Ambassador), Dr. Ama (Founder, Allied Empowerment®️ & Live Abundantly®️) and Nifemi Oguntoye (Moderator) offer unique perspectives and share experiences and solutions to address the factors which drive irregular migration and human trafficking. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thinking-reimagined/message

Miguel is committed to leveraging his law degree in a non-traditional way to solve seemingly intractable problems and in this episode you will hear examples of how he does just that. Miguel shares with me the personal reasons that led him to set up this innovative program, and how he is aiming to fill a gap in traditional legal education. We cover how he went about doing so, the types of organisations involved and the interesting projects they work on and how it leads to opportunities for students. We also cover how, funnily enough, Miguel ended up being a fellow in his own program. In this episode you will hear how one person turned a good idea into action, the benefits and challenges of hackathons, the key to partnerships that have real impact, and actions we can take to improve diversity in the profession. You will especially enjoy this episode if you are interested in the entrepreneurs’ journey including how to overcome issues of program sustainability; and creative models for new legal education and justice solutions.
