In a week where no one has played a game, Xbox do us a solid and have a special Official Xbox Podcast episode. Ben had a listen and relayed the information to Lucy and Aadil who have thoughts about the new strategy. This isn’t a blow-for-blow recounting but a discussion on the higher-level points. Following this Ben mentions the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo and somehow talk turns to the Tomb Raider franchise. To finish, a quiz. Lucy drinks Cone, from Saint Mars of the Desert and Aadil has The White Hag’s Puca. Intro: Henry Fox from Irish Tech News interviews Bob Coggins, co-founder of the craft beer brewery, the White Hag. The White Hag is the first brewery in Sligo in over 100 years, who are hosting their annual Hagstravaganza craft beer festival this week. We discuss his business, the upcoming Hagstravaganza event, travel, and the culture and lifestyle in Sligo. Hagstravaganza, Brewery Festival, White Hag Brewery's Bob Coggins Bios: Bob Coggins is a co-founder of the White Hag Brewery. Bob originally got his start in marketing but changed career paths to get into the brewing business. Craft beers and brewing being a large part of his lifestyle, he wanted to bring this to others. Bob enjoys cycling and the laid-back lifestyle of Sligo, though he originally was based in Dublin. As we prepare to have 1500 of our closest friends, supporters, customers and community back in Ballymote for our birthday, we felt it is a good time to give you some insight into what we have been doing to progress our team and our culture here in The White Hag. A short 18 months ago a set of personal political opinions and views were interpreted as representing the views of the brewery and the wider team. What followed was a few months of reflection, discussion and rebuilding within our team. We realised that the inherent beliefs and values of the ownership team and the majority of staff were not apparent to our community in our communications or actions. With the assistance of many friends within the beer industry and in professional services who specialise in creating open, fair and welcoming workplaces, we have worked to address many issues which arose over those months. We spoke to many individuals and groups who were affected by the events, and took all feedback & input we received. We undertook a formal investigation by an external 3rd party, Edger HR, to ensure we dealt with any issues that may have arisen in the past, that had come to our attention through direct contact or by conversation online and elsewhere. The investigation pursued all issues and claims, and ultimately found we needed to focus on developing a culture of openness and inclusion across the brewery. While the investigation has concluded, we still welcome any input and feedback on the above process, via contact details below. Building on this, with the help of Under the Rainbow and Edger HR, we spoke to our current and past employees, and partners of the business. Our team focused on defining policies and workplace practices built on respect and understanding. We focused on understanding how we explore and advocate for openness, fairness and diversity in our recruitment, communications and our community. Over the intervening period there have been many changes to the team at the brewery. We are proud that we are recruiting new team members based on talent, ambition and potential. New team members come from a diverse range of backgrounds and culture, and bring a wealth of experiences. Training & education initiatives, support for flexible working arrangements that accommodate family commitments, and recognition of the positive input brought by those with unique experiences are just some of the practices we have introduced and supported. All staff and management have signed up to an agreed code of conduct defined as part of our employment contract, that was built by the team with help from professionals in this space. In addition we're trying damn hard to make it fun again – as Brian repeatedly says ‘It's beer, it's supposed to be fun!!' We aimed to fulfill a mission we set for ourselves last February when we committed that ‘We'll not rest until people of every persuasion can view The White Hag as a business and brewery you would feel comfortable working in, visiting and supporting'. We believe we're getting there, and we hope you feel that too. The work is not done, it is continuous and we hope you can support us and be part of the journey as we go. Over the Hagstravaganza weekend ...

The White Hag Irish Brewing Company has been doing their research. They have recreated a ancient beer style called gruit. It uses Irish heather tops instead of hops and using wild yeasts for fermentation. They then aged it on French and Hungarian wine barrels for extra tartness. The result is Beann Gulban Irish Heather Sour Ale. And it's our advent beer for day 20.

Before we get started today I want to tell you about a couple of upcoming GBH events happening right here in London this September. First up, we’re incredibly excited to be bringing New Belgium’s wonderful sours to British shores for the first ever time, in an event called Into the Wild. They’ll be pouring their 2018 iterations of Le Terroir, Transatlantique Kriek and, of course, La Folie, alongside some incredible cheeses selected by Cheesemonger Ned Palmer, meats from The Charcuterie Board and sourdough from Bread by Bike. We’ve also hand picked a small selection of brewers, cider makers and winemakers to pour alongside them, in an effort to showcase all things delicious and fermentation driven—and crucially—what they all have in common. Along with New Belgium themselves we’ll be joined by, Burning Sky, Cloudwater, Beavertown’s Tempus Project, Boundary, Oliver’s Cider and Perry and New Zealand’s Garage Project, who’ll be bringing natural wines from their Crushed series. It’s happening on September 5th at the Beer Merchants Tap in Hackney, and I hope to see some of you there.
We’re also busy prepping for this year’s Beavertown Extravaganza. We’ll be there again this year with two days worth of panel talks happening over the course of both sessions on the 7th and 8th of September. A few tickets are still available, but they’re selling fast, so head over to beavertownbrewery.co.uk to grab yours now, and we’ll see you there. Now onto this week’s episode—an experiment of sorts that ended up being a lot of fun to record. A couple weeks back I travelled to Sligo, on the West Coast of Ireland to visit The White Hag brewery, which happened to be celebrating its fourth birthday with its annual Hagstravaganza Festival. I can’t tell you how many emails and tweets I’ve had over the years from Irish beer lovers asking me when I was going to visit and experience the Emerald Isle’s thriving beer culture for myself. So, while at the festival, I tried to capture as much of that culture as possible in a series of shorter interviews. I hope you’ll agree that the passion, and enthusiasm for Irish beer is infectiously evident in each one of them. Over the next couple of hours you’ll hear from The White Hag’s head brewer, Joe Kearns. Tom Delaney, head brewer at Galway Bay Brewery, and his own mixed-fermentation project Land and Labour. Cormac Wall, an Irishman working for Honest Brew in London, who also recently started contributing to GBH’s b-Roll blog. Wayne and Janice Dunne, who collectively as The Irish Beer Snobs author a blog, and host a podcast of their own. Mark Twig and Maurice Deasy of Canvas Brewery, and Francesca Slattery, of London’s Five Points Brewing Company, who lives in Dublin and works as the brewery’s rep out in Ireland. The Irish beer market is a fascinating one, and also one not without its struggles. It’s an industry dominated by the giants of Heineken and Diageo via its Guinness Brand—the latter going as far as to serve as a core part of this nation’s identity for so many. However, what I found, was that if you scratch below the surface—even just a little—you’ll soon find a thriving set of young, entrepreneurial brewers, each one desperate to prove that the beer scene here is composed of far more than merely “the Black Stuff.” A quick note—this episode was recorded at a working beer festival, so there is some noise. But hopefully that’ll convey how fantastic the atmosphere was at this event.
