When starting out, many artists (myself included), struggle to understand how to elevate their work. They often wonder if they need to add more or change their style to make something beautiful happen.  However, the secret isn't in adding MORE, but in utilizing LESS. We're talking about negative space! But it's not a dirty word — it just means the empty space surrounding the subject of an artwork. And it's crucial for creating focus, depth, and complexity in your art.  If you feel like your work is missing something, negative space may be the most POSITIVE step you have taken yet.   Make sure to subscribe to this podcast so you don't miss a thing! Wendy MacNaughton on her Substack Draw Together talked about negative space this week and she wrote,“Negative Space performs many functions: it focuses our eyes on the subject, it moves our eyes around a drawing or it keeps them still, it allows for visual space/room to breathe, and sometimes it gives the subject an extra layer of meaning.“For example, ever seen this logo before?“Sure, you've probably seen it a million times.“But have you noticed the hidden symbol in the logo?! Focus your attention on the negative space of the logo - the space between the letters. Do you see it? Look between the E and the X. Now do you see the arrow?? YES. It's subtle. It took me YEARS to see it. But once you see the arrow formed by the negative space you can't unsee it. In this case, designer Lindon Leader used the negative space to create an image that informs the meaning of the subject. An arrow takes your package from here to there. Very clever, Lindon.”This obviously has societal implications, which she writes about as well. She talks about sociologist W.E.B Du Bois' work Data Portraits: Visualizing Black America, which shows in data and visualization what was and wasn't going on.In writing, we call this negative space white space, right? How writers use it impacts readers' experiences. It focuses attention on shorter words and paragraphs. It gives a visual break—especially when it's at the end of the scene or chapter, right? A new chapter almost always begins on a new page. There's a reason for that. It's to let that last bit resonate. It's to signal, “Hey! Rock star! You just read a chapter!”So… how do you create white space?Make your sentences shorter. Vary these babies. Make your paragraphs shorter. Vary these babies, too. In articles, make lists. Make sure in dialogue that each person speaking gets their own paragraph. Don't embed the dialogue.WHY NEGATIVE SPACE IS GOOD IN OUR LIVES, TOOLast week, on our blog, I talked about how boredom is actually a pretty awesome thing. But basically, being bored allows us to have creativity, to replenish, to incubate ideas a and thoughts.RANDOM THOUGHT LINKOur random thought came from here.DOG TIP FOR LIFEPOGIE AND MR MURPHY DOG: This is 100% positive truth. Aric discusses the influence of Koontz, King (especially his 1978 collection "Night Shift" and the subsequent 1985 anthology film adaptation "Cat's Eye"), Lovecraft, and fantasy writers like Tolkien, Jordan, and Tad Williams on his work, and how Aric's rediscovery of Ray Bradbury's more macabre tales as an MFA candidate in Creative Writing informed his decision to move specifically into writing horror. This episode is for those who find themselves in an inner space of awkward loss and silence, for those who feel grief and overwhelm from the events of the world. Here we reflect on the Middle East crisis, by stepping outside the politics and into the quiet solitude of a grieving heart.   What do you do, when you don't want to talk, yet want to be heard? What do you do, when you don't know what to say, and yet want to be understood? When you can't reveal what's on your heart, and want to be seen regardless, what do you do?   Sometimes it may feel like we arrive at an empty parking lot, finding silence and desertion, instead of a sign of life. We hear silence instead of voices that talk about things we find important. Events of our times may make us feel alone and abandoned, when what deeply matters seems to be left out of the conversation and ignored.    Tune into this episode, where we explore ways to reconnect with our own heart, in our attempt to look into the unseen.        "Don't Blame The Brain" is the book you don't want to miss! Last year, David Peak released "The World Below," a midwestern gothic tale intertwining two rival families whose animosity sparks amidst a ritualistic occult murder mystery, amplified by heroic doses of LSD. Published by Apocalypse Party, a rapidly acclaimed purveyor of top-tier horror, "The World Below" is a testament to their commitment to darkness. This book seamlessly blends atmosphere and narrative, achieving the rare feat of being both immersive and a page-turner. David Peak's work aligns him with horror luminaries like Brian Evenson, Clive Barker, and Poppy Z Brite. In this episode, we delve into reading as a psychedelic act, exploring how family feuds in small towns can evolve into an art form. We also dissect the drama and artistry of Jerry Springer, touch on the American mythology surrounding the West Memphis Three, and revel in the exhilaration of death metal and films like "Mandy." "A brilliant and flayed slice of Midwest gothic. While one might find traces of Poppy Z. Brite or Michael McDowell here, The World Below is wholly its own beast. Peak laces the classic premise of feuding, cursed families with high-potency LSD, forming something fresh, potent, and filled with ache." -B.R. Yeager, author of Negative Space "Violent, noir-soaked horror infuses every page of David Peak's astonishing The World Below, coiling like a serpent around love: first and lost loves, love of family and the land, love of darkness and blood. Peak mixes the most primal of emotions like an alchemist, leaving every reader transformed." -Livia Llewellyn, author of Furnace SOCIAL: Twitter: @WakeIslandPod  Instagram: @wakeislandpod David's Twitter: @raviddice --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wake-island/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wake-island/support

On Today's Show "That's still my trick too, never tell them how they're feeling. Never begin to even show how they're feeling. They'll get it anyway. You're describing negative space and the negative space you can't even get at.” - Jon Klassen Where there is empty space, our brains will fill in the blanks, and often, the way in which we personally fill those blank spaces is far more potent than anything that can be written in words or shown in an image. That's why despite being gifted in both illustrating and writing, Jon Klassen always intentionally restrains himself from specificity. Jon is a Caldecott Medal winner author and illustrator known for his distinctive minimalistic art style and quirky but profound writing. His work includes his Hat Trilogy, starting with "I Want My Hat Back", along with newer works such as "The Rock from the Sky," “The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale” and many collaborations with his longtime friend and author Mac Barnett. In this episode, Jon tells us the story of how he learned to embrace the unspoken through a “gunshot moment” in his youth. He'll talk about how he intentionally incorporates negative space into his work and why that is so impactful for young readers in particular, and we'll hear about the SNL classics that inspired his coy sense of comedy. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***In his reading challenge, "A Tale to Remember," Jon invites readers to follow a process that for him emerged unintentionally in the creation of his latest book, "The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale." Rarely are writers encouraged to be angry on the page, and this is especially true for women writers of personal narratives. In this week's episode, we're exploring anger's purpose in writing with guest Lilly Dancyger, who gives permission to lean into anger, and whose memoir, Negative Space, has, by Lilly's own estimation, an angry central protagonist (her younger self) and an angry narrator (her older self). An important conversation for anyone who's been told they're too angry, or not to be angry, in their writing.
