I had such a great discussion with child life specialist Jessica Correnti this week on the Widowed Parent Podcast. Jessica is the founder of a practice called Kids Grief Support. She is also the author of two picture books for young grievers, including her newest, The ABCs of Grief, which will be available in February 2024. In this discussion we dive deep on a number of topics, such as: the power of books to help kids see that they are not the only kid with a dead parent; the importance of being honest with kids; examples of clear language to help kids understand what it means when someone dies; what she looks for in a developmentally appropriate grief book for kids; and much more. So much of our focus at the Widowed Parent Institute is on helping parents learn about children's grief and how to support their own grieving kids. Today's guest has so much to share with us on this topic. Be sure to follow Jessica on Instagram, too, where she shares tips and resources about children's grief. -=-=-=-=- Thank you sponsors & partners: Help Texts - Grief support text messaging service. In a world filled with unexpected challenges, today's guest has transformed her life's journey into a beacon of support and guidance for widowed parents. For two decades, she led transformation projects for IBM across five continents, mastering the art of managing cross-functional teams and implementing innovative business solutions. However, at 43 years old, her life took an unforeseen twist when she became a widowed parent to two young children. She discovered that resources for widowed parents were scarce, so she decided to fill that gap. She created "The Widowed Parent Podcast," an insightful show that explores the real-life stories of widowed families, providing a platform to share their perspectives, reflections, and invaluable advice. She's the author of two books: “Future Widow: Losing My Husband, Saving My Family, and Finding My Voice” and "Widowed Parents Unite: 52 Tips to Get Through the First Year, from One Widowed Parent to Another." She founded the Widowed Parent Institute, further solidifying her commitment to helping others navigate the challenges of solo parenting after loss. Her work has been described as "real and relevant, intermixed with a sense of hope for the future." Please join me in welcoming Jenny Lisk. Join us in a heartfelt conversation with Jenny Lisk as she shares her remarkable journey from corporate leadership to empowering widowed parents, all while redefining the meaning of leadership and turning grief into a powerful force for change. Summary:If you are a widowed parent, you need to listen to this episode - you will definitely benefit from it. For others, it is quite routine to think of someone who is widowed and wonder how they are doing in their grief, but we need to do a better job at appreciating the complexities associated with this when they are also still parenting. A widow with 2 children is, for example, dealing with 3 instances of grief, each unique. Listen in as Jenny Lisk helps us better understand this topic.Notes:Jenny Lisk is an award-winning author and widowed mom who is dedicated to helping widowed parents increase their family's well-being. Susan, your host, welcomes Jenny Lisk to today's episode. Jenny is a widowed parent of two grieving kids. After interviewing over 100 experts on the topic of widowed parenting for the Widowed Parent Podcast, she learned that there are some key principles and tips about parenting grieving kids that newly widowed parents probably don't know about. Jenny is the author of an award-winning book named Future Widow (which has endorsements from many prominent children's grief experts). Her family's story is told as a memoir where she has explicitly worked in themes about parenting grieving kids. This amazing book is about more than children's grief, it's about rebuilding a life after loss. Key Takeaways: Jenny shares her grief story. Susan and Jenny talk about that day that changes life forever, and how that moment gave them the perspective and intention to be present and try to enjoy every moment. Jenny talks about the moment she decided she was going to help other parents with grieving children (while she and her children were dealing with the tsunami of pain that grief imposed on them). Jenny found that she could host a podcast and be the one who asks questions to the experts, representing other grieving people who transited similar journeys to hers. Jenny speaks about how walking is a meditative activity for her. Jenny talks about the roles of instrumental and intuitive grievers. Jenny talks about her book Future Widow. Jenny shares her struggle figuring out how to end the book. Sometimes two opposite things can be true, you don't have to reconcile them. Jenny talks to grieving parents: It is important to be honest with kids, especially about difficult topics, it nurtures a strong bond of trust between the child and the surviving parent. If you are supporting a grieving parent, keep in mind that you cannot solve the underlying problem, but you can contribute to their everyday life, help them with meals or drive their kids to school; it will show them you care. November is National Children's Grief Awareness Month. 1 out of every 20 children age fifteen and younger will experience the loss of one or both parents (www.childrensgriefawareness.org). I can't imagine the statistics for the past two years as we continue grapple with the fall out from the pandemic. In this episode, I interview Jenny Lisk, mother of two who lost her husband to brain cancer. Jenny was not only left to care for her two young children alone. But she also had to devise a strategy to help her children through their grief while managing her own. Two ways she worked through her own grief was by starting The Widowed Parent Podcast and writing her book, https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/1735613606/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1735613606&linkCode=am2&tag=rosmakityou20-20&linkId=b303ed156901a9c46d7293d43951b316 (Future Widow). “Grief support is like swimming lessons” ~ Jenny Lisk Takeaway Be honest with your children Hire a therapist Connect with others who are grieving Resources: https://campwidow.org/ (Camp Widow) Connect with Jenny: http://www.jennylisk.com/ (www.jennylisk.com) Check out her book, https://jennylisk.com/future-widow (Future Widow:) Losing My Husband, Saving My Family, Finding My Voice Freebies from Jenny: https://jennylisk.com/giveaway-archive (jennylisk.com/giveaway) Website: https://www.solomoms-talk.com (www.solomoms-talk.com) Intro song from the single "Desperate" by Damien Ellison This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy Support this podcast

Jenny Lisk is an author, speaker, and host of the Widowed Parent Podcast, which has been featured in The Washington Post and ParentMap. She pivoted after 20 years in IT into being a podcaster and author. Her husband died when she was 43. Adrift for a couple of years, knowing she needed to make a change but not knowing what that would look like or how she would go about doing it. She felt completely lost as a widowed parent and realized there must be others who felt the same way. She declared a one-year sabbatical and went all-in on creating a podcast for widowed parents. Getting back to your regular life is next to impossible after the loss of someone you love because everything as we once knew it has changed. 5 years ago Jenny's husband lost his battle with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. In the years following her husband's passing, Jenny searched for resources/communities for widowed parents and found there weren't that many resources/communities to help those going through this experience. So, in November of 2018, she launched the Widowed Parent Podcast to help those in this grieving processes. The podcast explores real-life stories of widowed families and brings in experts on a wide variety of topics related to childhood grief, parenting and loss. Hey everyone, it's Jenny Lisk and this is episode 56 of The Widowed Parent Podcast. It was such a pleasure to talk with Sarah Illiatovitch-Goldman, director of the Hearts to Art summer camp program at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. I always love being able to spotlight programs and resources for families in various locations. Hearts to Art runs a performing arts camp for kids ages 7-14 who have lost a parent or primary caregiver. Some topics Sarah and I discuss include: How and why the camp was started 16 years ago; The idea that you don't need to love the arts to get something from participating; The kinds of performing arts activities kids can expect at camp; The grief work woven throughout the camp sessions; Their junior counselor program for teens; and Where to find resources if you're outside the Chicago area. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Sarah Illiatovitch-Goldman.
This week's show — January 1, 2020 — is the “Best of 2019” episode. Listen for reflections on decades past and the decade ahead, as well as what I'm looking forward to for the podcast in 2020. Also join me as a share clips from six favorite episodes this year, with guests Austin Shoecraft, Claire Bidwell Smith, Allison Gilbert, Lane Pease, Jessica Maitland Mayo & Micki Burns, and Dr. Lisa Damour. Also mentioned: interviews with Buffy Peters & Sasha Mudlaff, Dr. Justin Yopp, Tembi Locke, Vicki Jay, and Karen Millsap.
Today we wind up our special two-part discussion for the one-year anniversary of the Widowed Parent Podcast. My friend Karen Millsap returns to once again interview me on my own show. I had so much fun talking with her and reflecting on how and why I started the podcast, and also thinking about some of the main lessons I've learned from my guests. Some of the topics we discuss include: Why I decided to start the Widowed Parent Podcast; How I learned what I needed to do to start it; Getting over the question of ‘why me' – why should I start this podcast; What's been the most fun; What's been the hardest; Why I took an August break from producing new episodes; What I've learned from my guests on the podcast; and What I'm looking forward to in the next year. Many thanks to Karen for taking the mic again this week for Part 2 of our discussion, and helping me reflect on my journey through starting the Widowed Parent Podcast. I'm especially glad to be able to look back at some of the key things I've learned from my guests and share them with listeners. I hope you enjoy our discussion.
We're changing things up this week, in honor of the one-year anniversary of the podcast. I've asked my friend Karen Millsap to interview me on my own show. Long time listeners will remember Karen from Episode 14. She's a widowed parent herself, and she is a Mindset Mastery Coach who is passionate about teaching individuals the tools and resources to feel better, live better, and achieve their goals with a healthy mindset. This week – in Part 1 – we talk about my story. I'm always on the other side of the mic, asking the questions, but this week the tables are turned. Karen interviews me, and I share my journey of the past few years with my husband, Dennis, being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and then dying when our kids were 9 and 11. Some topics we discuss include: Our “normal” life before my husband, Dennis, died; His diagnosis with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer; Living through the 8 months he was terminally ill; Parenting our 9 & 11-year-olds through his illness; What the early months of being a widowed parent were like; Starting Megan's Cards for Cancer with my daughter to raise money for brain cancer research; and Looking ahead to Part 2 – next week – with more about how I started the Widowed Parent Podcast, and what I've learned so far from my guests. Many thanks to Karen for taking the mic this week and helping me share my story. I hope you enjoy our discussion.
