The case of the Golden State Killer puzzled police and amateur sleuths for decades. Then, in April 2018, a Sacramento man was arrested and charged. How did police find their man, and what led them to him after years of nothing but cold clues and lack of leads? Genealogy is a complex, and often misunderstood science. But, according to Professor Dennis McNevin, an expert in the field of forensic genetics, it's a technique police are becoming more and more interested in. Join former Crime Insiders Forensics host Kathryn Fox as she unpacks Dennis' work and career, and dives into cases like the Golden State Killer and the Somerton man. The Big Themes:Apex's culture of curiosity: While the CFO's domain is traditionally finance, JJ explains that at Apex, he is focused on business forecasting, not just financial. Workday Adaptive Planning was the perfect tool for the inclusive and cooperative culture at Apex.Effective planning keeps Apex ahead of disruption: The ability to create scenarios that incorporate many shareholders' voices has kept Apex strong and solvent during major challenges like the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.Investing in high-growth tech attracts talent: JJ contrasts the boring "plug and chug" culture he has seen in other finance departments with the dynamic environment at Apex, noting that investments in tech like Workday Adaptive is a draw for talent. The Big Quote: "We're proud of that. When we go to the market, recruiting people, we're talking about, number-one best place to work in Fort Worth, number-six in Texas... And part of that is, we've invested in the tech, right? We've invested in Workday." Want to learn more about Workday Adaptive Planning? Watch a demo and explore use cases here. This episode is sponsored by Workday.

I was born in Brooklyn, New York (perhaps you noticed my accent), Like a lot of folks, I had a few traumatic events in my early years. I was the oldest of 3 sisters and two brothers and my mother was a disciplinarian. From an early age, I had plenty of chores. They were a lot of secrets in my family, and I always tried to stay under the radar for fear I would provoke my mother's ire. Overall, I had a happy childhood and as a teen, I was shy and withdrawn. I always remained positive no matter what life threw my way. I would classify myself at that as an introvert. Always cautious and shy. I received my diploma from a Catholic high school and decided to forgo college and go to work. At 21 I moved to my own place in Manhattan. Finally, I had freedom and was both excited and fearful to be on my own. Soon thereafter I acclimated myself to city life and all the parties that went with it. Alcohol and drugs became a big part of my life, and I was like a kid in a candy store. This took place during the seventies and eighties.Eventually, this lifestyle started to take a toll on me, both physically and mentally. I became angry and high-strung and would drink to excess. I wasn't happy and I felt a black hole building inside of me. I was disconnected. I decided I needed to leave this environment because it was too toxic. Eventually, I moved to Minnesota and got the help I needed. This was a turning point in my life and it allowed me to grow personally first and then spiritually. I had a lot of work to do. I started reading self-help books, going to the gym, doing breathing exercises, and meditating. I didn't know it at the time but I had a mindset shift. Gradually I was becoming a new person. By the grace of God, the spiritual connection was back. I decided I wanted to help people who were in the same unfortunate situation that I had been in, and so I started sharing and passing on the positive things I learned. At this point, I was living in San Diego and went back to National University College where I got a bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science. I started to learn about myself and how I could rejoin the world. I sought out a therapist to work on my past traumas and free myself from all that prevented me from moving forward. I volunteered with AmeriCorps for one year and from there, I started working as a Personal Care attendant helping people with disabilities.I recently moved to Charleston South Carolina as sort of a retirement home and I worked part-time as a Para Transit driver. I had a handicapped-equipped bus and I would drive seniors to and from their doctor's appointments. This past November I quit my job and put all my effort into starting the Joseph James Mindset Coaching business. Once I realize I could use my experience and my passion to help others, I was grateful and ready to get going. To be able to do this at this point in my life was like a miracle to me. Christina Patterson Wood is a dance instructor and directs one of the studio outreach programs that work one on one with at-risk youth. She also does admin support for Lousiville, Kentucky ministry that helps incarcerated men transition out of prison and back into society. Christina has the heart to use the arts to help at-risk youth around the world. Christina is a long-time friend of mine whom I just reconnected with after she shared her story about sexual assault that happened in a past relationship. We talk about how she, and many women, suppress their sexual assault experiences for years until something happens that triggers the memories, and they are faced with confusion, denial, and ultimately the truth of what happened to them. Christina was in denial of the fact she was sexually assaulted by her ex-fiance 20 years ago. In her mind, sexual assault only happened by strangers in an aggressive way and not in relationships, not by someone you are in a relationship with. This misconception in her mind suppressed her mind kept her questioning what really happened. In the dance industry, there are many women coming out years later and joining the #MeToo movement by talking about their instructors who abused them as students, children, and young adults. Years later she was triggered. Seeing her well her husband treats her made her realize how badly she was treated in the past. She realized what happened to her years ago, and came out with her story publicly because she wants people to know that they deserve to be loved, not treated unwell. On this episode: Christina shares her experience of realizing she was sexually assaulted How she told her husband, and he showered her in love, care, and support Why do many women keep quiet about their sexual assault Why many women question if what happened was sexual assault The Me Too Movement and how prominent it is in the dance community Why Christina stayed quiet for so long, and her fear that if she told her story people would minimize it. Her work in the at-risk youth community How she helps her ministry support men transition out of prison and back into the community Key Takeaways: You deserve to be loved, not treated unwell How telling your story can help others tell theirs Finding a purpose in your pain to help others Why we say getting into a new relationship can help you heal from a past relationship Quotable Moments: “The painful things we experience have a purpose, so changing the question of what was the purpose of that happening to me, to how do I find purpose through it changes the perspective a lot.” “You deserved to be loved, you deserve to be loved well, and in the way that God loves you” “He was my fiance, he said he loved me, this is not the context of how sexual assault happens” Connect with Joseph James: https://www.facebook.com/meetjoejames (Facebook Page) https://www.facebook.com/groups/1248540762254029 (Facebook Group) https://www.instagram.com/meetjosephjames/ (Instagram)

To tackle mental health issues, you need a strategy. This could be talking to a therapist, doing inner work, visualizing, but regardless, there needs to be a strategy. When in the middle of a mental health crisis, it can be hard to see clear and create that strategy. This is where Gordon Corsetti comes in. Gordon has come a long way in his mental health journey and uses what he's learned to help educate kids and adults with their struggles with stress, anxiety, resentment, and worthlessness. He speaks to the unique human ability to change our minds and show how to use tools to acompish that change. Gordon is an author, public speaker, and advocate for suicide prevention and mental health awareness, writing regularly on his website mentallyagile.com. He speaks to the uniquely human ability to change our minds and shows how to use tools to accomplish that change. While “tough it out” is fantastic advice for someone who already knows what to do and has the ability to do it, Gordon believes that it is impractical and dangerous advice to those with no idea what they are doing. Whether you have a diagnosed mental illness or are just facing the stresses of everyday life, tune in to hear about Gordon's experience with depression, self-harm, anti-depressants, and therapy, and learn how you can start taking action today. On This Episode: Gordon's struggle with depression growing up with good parents and a good childhood The impact of having a predisposition for mental illness Planning his first suicide attempt and the friend who changed the course of his life Gordon's brutal cycle with anti-depressants How he started working with his depression instead of rebelling against it The human stress response and why it is not designed for the ongoing stresses we experience today The power of visualization and learning how to be content Mental agility vs. mental toughness Action steps to keep moving forward when dealing with stress, anxiety, and overwhelm Key Takeaways: Depression isn't usually something you just wake up with one day. It's a slow and insidious process. Never underestimate the power of simply asking someone, “How can I help?” Listen to your doctor when they tell you not to quit your anti-depressants cold turkey. The human mind has a significant ability to adapt. Don't judge yourself for not being at 100% every day. Tweetable Moments: “We exist on a spectrum of behaviors.” - Gordon Corsetti “If you don't sleep well, you're screwed long-term. Nobody operates well off of a lack of sleep.” - Gordon Corsetti “Pain teaches if you're willing to be a student.” - Gordon Corsetti Connect with Gordon: Website: https://mentallyagile.com/ (https://mentallyagile.com/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mentallyagile (https://www.facebook.com/mentallyagile) Twitter: https://twitter.com/mental_agility (https://twitter.com/mental_agility) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mentallyagile/ (https://www.instagram.com/mentallyagile/) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gordoncorsetti/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/gordoncorsetti/) Email: gcorsetti@mentallyagile.com Contact Form: https://mentallyagile.com/contact (https://mentallyagile.com/contact) Connect with Joseph James: Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/meetjoejames (https://www.facebook.com/meetjoejames) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meetjosephjames/ (https://www.instagram.com/meetjosephjames/)

When you keep telling yourself the same story, nothing will change. In this episode, Joseph James talks all about identity, and how most people prioritize the wrong thing. Changing your identity is something that many people struggle with for a whole lifetime. If you want to change your identity, the vision of yourself must change. How we feel about our own lives is so important. We create an identity for ourselves about how we talk, look, act, and even who we interact with so we can keep up a certain look or idea of ourselves But when your profession becomes your identity, something certainly needs to change.
