Dr. Nupsie-flore Exantus moved from Haiti to the United States when she was in 6th grade at the age of 11. It was a cold Christmas Day when she arrived to join her two older sisters who were here prior to her arrival. The only English she knew was how to say was “Good Morning.” She was quickly enrolled into a new arrivals program at school and had many immigrant friends. She purposely immersed herself in learning English trying hard not to fall into speaking Creole thinking it would set her off track. She was connected to another Haitian student who was helpful and then met her mentor, Ms. Vialla, who she is still in contact with and impacted by to this day. She speaks openly and honestly about trying to find her way in a new place, often feeling lost. Dr. Exantus is a UCONN alum but didn't stay with her original plan of study to be an engineer. She felt it would be a difficult road as a black female and although her brother is an engineer and her 4 sisters are all nurses, she chose her own path focusing on social work. Now, as a doctor of Social Work, she is the Director of Middle School Programs at REACH Prep, a transformative educational program for high-achieving, yet underserved, children of color from 5th grade through college. She works diligently to transform their learning experience while providing essential support to the entire family. Additionally, she is the proud founder of Heart & Purpose, a nonprofit program that promotes education and economic empowerment for students from marginalized communities. Their focus is on young girls in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, as well as young females of color in lower Fairfield County and Westchester County, New York. Listening to her story while thinking about how her impact is affecting a new generation of young black females is nothing short of eye opening and breathtaking.

Frank sits down with Graveyard from Distance Nerding to revisit the cult favorite Trick 'r Treat. They unpack the film's comic-book anthology structure, Michael Dougherty's direction, how lighting and practical effects sell the Halloween vibe, and why “respecting the rules” is the movie's secret engine. The “rules of Halloween” aren't window dressing. They're story fuel that decide who lives, who dies, and why. Lighting sells the tone shift. Warm, cozy frames flip to dread in an instant. Practical effects age better than quick-hit CGI, especially for werewolves and Sam. The movie's cult rise tracks with broader horror cycles moving from torture-focused trends to craft-first “prestige” horror. Horror often mirrors the fears and taboos of its moment, which is why the genre keeps evolving and resurfacing. Want more in this vein? Krampus keeps Dougherty's dark humor, while Creepshow nails the comic-panel anthology spirit. Quotes “He is the embodiment of Halloween. Sam.” — Graveyard “The nonlinear works great because it feels like a comic book adaptation.” — Graveyard “Respect the traditions of the past. If you don't know them, learn them.” — Graveyard “Walking Dead is a drama that happens to have some zombies on it.” — Graveyard “There are so many shots I'm looking for more than I would in a normal movie.” — Frank Call to Action Enjoyed the episode? Jury Foreman Slams State's Case After Acquittal in Fatal Stabbing of Prep School Student The foreman of the jury that acquitted Raul Valle of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old lacrosse player James “Jimmy” McGrath has criticized the prosecution's case, saying it lacked the evidence necessary to support a conviction. Valle, now 20, was found not guilty on Wednesday of murder, first-degree manslaughter with intent to cause serious physical injury, and first-degree assault with intent to cause serious physical injury. These charges stemmed from a violent altercation on May 14, 2022, during a house party in Shelton, an affluent suburb in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The incident occurred during a night of back-to-back high school parties. McGrath, a student at Fairfield College Preparatory School, was fatally stabbed in the chest during a brawl involving dozens of teenagers. Valle, a student at nearby St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, admitted to wielding a knife during the fight but testified he did not intend to kill anyone and acted in self-defense during a chaotic melee. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision on two lesser included charges—second-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault, both based on recklessness. As a result, a partial mistrial was declared on those counts. Jim Stuhlman, the jury foreman and 10th juror, read the not-guilty verdict in court. Speaking to News 3 afterward, Stuhlman said, “They just didn't have enough to prove the case. There were too many inconsistencies and contradictions in the testimony.” He explained that jurors quickly dismissed the idea that Valle had intentionally killed McGrath. “The prosecution failed to prove intent,” he said, adding that the jury followed legal instructions carefully. “We did what we were supposed to do.” Stuhlman acknowledged the difficulty of the case, saying, “Not everyone will be happy with the conclusion. We weren't happy that we couldn't find agreement on the final counts, but we did everything we could to get as far as we did.” The partial mistrial leaves open the possibility of further legal action. On Thursday, Fox News Digital confirmed that the state of Connecticut plans to retry Valle on the unresolved reckless manslaughter and reckless assault charges. Outside the courthouse, Jimmy McGrath's father, Kevin McGrath, expressed disbelief over the verdict. “I'm astonished at the results,” he said. “But it's due process. [Valle] is entitled to it. The jury made their decision.” He admitted he was confident there would be a conviction after learning a verdict had been reached. “I'm shocked. I thought we were going to get some justice today,” McGrath said. Despite his disappointment, he acknowledged that Valle received a fair trial. “I don't believe Raul Valle woke up that Saturday morning planning to kill Jimmy,” he added. “They didn't even know each other. But my son is gone, and the person who took his life is free tonight.” During the trial, Valle testified that he never intended to harm anyone. He said the fight began at a home on Lazy Brook Road, then continued at a second house party on Laurel Glen Drive. Valle said a friend handed him a knife during the brawl, and that he swung it defensively in a panic as he was being surrounded and attacked. He claimed he briefly lost consciousness during the fight. McGrath suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead later that night. The McGrath family is now pursuing civil litigation against multiple parties they believe bear responsibility for the events of that evening.  Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?  Check out our YouTube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@hiddenkillerspod Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hiddenkillerspod/ Tik-Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@hiddenkillerspod X Twitter https://x.com/tonybpod Listen Ad-Free On Apple Podcasts Here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-today-premium-plus-ad-free-advance-episode/id1705422872

Connecticut Explored and our podcast, Grating the Nutmeg, have featured many of the heritage trails that mark the important histories and sites of Connecticut's people. Preservation Connecticut has undertaken a survey of LGBTQ+ heritage sites across the state. Now, Grating the Nutmeg and Preservation Connecticut have teamed up to bring you a three-episode podcast series that pairs new research on LGBTQ+ identity and activism with accounts of the Connecticut places where history was made. The episodes include a thriving vegetarian cafe-bookstore run by lesbian feminists in a working-class former factory town, a transgender medical researcher working on an urgent public health issue in the center of Connecticut politics, and a gay, Jewish, best-selling children's book author in affluent Fairfield County.   In this episode, Dr. Alex Ketchum, author of Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants, Cafes, and Coffeehouses, published by Concordia University Press in 2022, reveals the history of women-owned restaurants in the 1970s and 1980s that had a feminist mission. In a first-ever overview of feminist cafe subculture, Ketchum's book details the role eateries played in social justice movements, including women's and LGBTQ+ liberation, and food justice. And we will highlight Bloodroot, the almost 50-year-old lesbian-feminist bookstore, collective, and vegetarian restaurant in Bridgeport.   Dr. Ketchum is Assistant Professor at McGill University's Institute for Gender, Sexuality, Feminist Studies, and the Director of the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab, co-editor of Queers at the Table: An Illustrated Guide to Queer Food (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2022), and creator of The Feminist Restaurant Project: thefeministrestaurantproject.com Follow Dr. Ketchum on her social media pages- bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/aketchum22.bsky.social   @aketchum22.bsky.social instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/dr.alexketchum/ @dr.alexketchum   To find out more information on Bloodroot Restaurant, check out these sources: Restaurant Website https://www.bloodroot.com/ Public Broadcasting Interview with the founders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtxLyIqYhxQ Documentary Trailer “A Culinary Uprising: The Story of Bloodroot” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh2K7RAeBf4   This episode of Grating the Nutmeg was supported by Preservation Connecticut, preserving the state's heritage for 50 years and a Quick Grant from CT Humanities. Edith Targonski arrived to the United States from Peru when she was 19 years old. Her sister had arrived a few years before and she was so happy about being reunited with her, but unhappy to speak English. She had visited the U.S. numerous times prior to her move but didn't know much English and lacked confidence in her speaking skills. She soon met a fellow immigrant from Poland, who arrived at 17 years old with his parents. They fell in love and got married. Edith and her husband created a beautiful family blending and honoring their individual cultures from South America and Poland, while building their own family traditions. They learned English and raised their children in an English speaking household but also exposed their children to Spanish and Polish for them to have the opportunity to communicate with their grandparents and broaden their horizons. Since arriving twenty seven years ago, Edith has been very motivated to learn, grow her career and serve the community. She earned a special education degree from Sacred Heart Univ, and was an effective classroom teacher for many years. Currently, she serves as a passionate advocate for families who have children with special needs. She is a business development consultant. She has been a dedicated volunteer to many organizations, giving credit to her father for her need to give back and learning this from watching him. She has graduated about 9 senior citizens who have achieved citizenship under her tutelage at the Stamford Senior Center. She currently serves in the role of Editor-in-Chief of Latincolors magazine, which is a bilingual magazine that is widely circulated throughout Fairfield County, CT. and Westchester County, NY. The mission of Latincolors is to bridge both geographical and cultural communities and celebrate the accomplishments and endeavors of the people, agencies, groups and organizations making a positive impact in the community. It is available in both English and Spanish and is a free publication and available online. Like many other guests on the podcast, she was enrolled in the PLTI (Parent Leadership Training Institute). She has been a facilitator for People Empowering People-PEP and currently serves on the Design Team. In addition, she serves on numerous other boards in the community, all of them serving the immigrant and Latin communities in different ways, while raising her 3 children to be passionate, giving and kind people.
