We LOVE to read comments so please leave a comment and subscribe to Our channel: https://www.youtube.com/writerslifeorg Grab your free writer's toolkit by going to http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello is Peter here again from a writer's life with more tips and advice for writers and coming up today how to strengthen your online presence nowadays it seems as though being a good writer simply isn't enough not only is a competition to get your book published fiercer than ever before but there are also thousands of authors now going down the self-publishing route which means it's tough to make your stand out having your great online presence is crucial for modern authors and this can be done in many ways however all of them involve consistently providing well-written interesting and engaging content that appeals to their target audience and keeps them not only coming back for more but sharing that content and therefore in some ways doing your marketing for you building a great online presence rarely happens overnight for most authors it's a slow and sometimes tedious process and the growth happens slowly but surely spending time on this however can make all the difference when it comes to helping see your book sales soar so how do you strengthen your online presence here are some rules to follow first be selfless obviously the whole point of dedicating time and efforts to engaging with people online is so that you can build a following and tell them about all the cool exciting writing related stuff you're doing the problem is for the most part they don't care you need to consistently give them useful interesting entertaining content theirs has nothing to do with your book once they trust you to continue to provide this for them and have become unwavering followers of what you do online only then should you talk about your work and even then this should be infrequent and genuine think about yourself as a shop assistant if you push too hard your customers will just leave if however you let them browse and only approach them when you think you can genuinely help them then back off if they refuse that help they are for more likely to stay and buy something next get known for one particular thing think about your work your genre and your talents how can you bring all of these together to reach out to your target audience your thing could be something really specific about fly-fishing or it could just be being sarcastic and funny think about what you can bring to the table that no one else is doing do it with integrity of passion and you'll soon find more and more people spreading the word about you next have confidence when you rise do so with authority even if you don't really believe you have any if you come across the self-assured and knowledgeable you'll attract a wider audience readers want to read content that is written with conviction it's not about people-pleasing it's about presenting thoughts and ideas which make people sit up and take notice next be consistent there's no point in writing one great piece posting it online working really hard to get as many people to see it as possible and then going quiet for a few weeks if you really want to strengthen your online presence you have to keep putting content out there there is no respite hard work is key annexed understand SEO learn how SEO works from a technical point of view yet link backs from reputable and high authority websites learn how to rank for certain keywords right content that's attention-grabbing and shareable if you can improve your SEO more people will be able to find you and learn about your book improving your online presence just like many aspects of writing takes time and persistence but doing so really can help you to increase your readership and sell more books so follow these tips keep working at it and it could make all the difference and don't forget if it's struggling to write or finish your book our free writers toolkit can help with it you'll learn how to overcome procrastination stay organized find time to write and finally get your book published to get access to it now while it's still available simply go to http://www.writerslife.org/toolkit that's it for now be sure to give us a thumbs up if you liked this video and of course subscribe to our channel for more I'm Peter this is writers life and I'll be back with more tips and advice for writers soon see you again bye for now

We LOVE to read comments so please leave a comment and subscribe to Our channel: https://www.youtube.com/writerslifeorg Grab your free writer's toolkit by going to http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello is Peter here again from WritersLife.org and coming up today how to write a novella a novella can be a great stepping stone in a writer's journey towards completing a novel or it can be a standalone project whatever the reason or motivation for writing a novella that a writer may have what it can do is to teach them about how to build characters introduce themes and convey a story in more depth than short stories do writing a novella might give you an idea for a novel or might end up turning into one itself like much in writing the word count for novellas is not set in stone thirty to sixty thousand words is about right this gives you enough leeway to expand your story if you see fit or to keep it quite concise either way even at the lower end of the word count writing a novella is no small undertaking it's long enough that the reader should become immersed in the world created but short enough that's a person might be able to devour the whole story in one sitting while there are lots of elements of a novella that are also important in a full-length novel there are also some crucial differences and it is essential to understand what these are and pay attention to them as you write your story so if you are hoping to write a novella remember these valuable tips first pay attention to structure the beauty of a novella is that you need to pack so much into a limited number of words there is no room for an excess of anything the plot needs to be watertight the story must unfold without deviation a good structure will provide the base from which to tell the story and needs to be smart and simple there's likely to be fewer characters fewer scene changes and a clear unifying idea that pulls the story together next use characters wisely there should be fewer characters in a novella and those that do appear should be used economically characters need to be impactful and their presence must be felt right away all characters should play an essential role in the story should drive the action and the plot forward and be cleverly executed so your readers feel as though they know them without having to know everything about them you don't have the luxury of pages of backstory or of letting your readers get to know your characters gradually they must feel a connection with them almost immediately have just a single theme and conflict while in a full-length novel there are opportunities to bring in several conflicts and dramas dilemmas themes subplots because of the limited word counts of a novella there should only be one single time frame single place single idea this way you can fully execute your story with as much power and attention to detail as if writing a full novel rather than giving a watered-down version where the story feels weak as if it isn't fully explained remember simplicity is key when it comes to writing a novella it's important not to over complicate things don't make life difficult for yourself by trying to pack too much in instead keep things simple while still creating a story that is complex enough to come to a satisfying conclusion without any surplus or digressions from the main idea so by following these tips you can write a novella that is / perfectly paced heats the read hoped allows them to immerse themselves in your story fully and yet remain simple sweet and satisfied and don't forget if you're surely to write or finish your book our free writers toolkit can help with it you'll learn how to overcome procrastination again organized stay focused fine times are right and finally get your book published to get access now while it's still available simply go to http://www.writerslife.org/toolkit that's it for now be sure to give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel for more I'm Peter and I'll see you next time

We LOVE to read comments so please leave a comment and subscribe to Our channel: https://www.youtube.com/writerslifeorg Grab your free writer's toolkit by going to http://www.writerslife.org/finish-your-book ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello its Peter here a game from writers life and today can you really be a part-time writer when it comes to writing we all hear those stories of famous writers you know the ones who are ate slept and breathed writing those who would guess over three am shaking with passion and a fierce unstoppable desire to write all their thoughts down those who couldn't think of anything other than writing who would spend their days holed up in their study perhaps a quirky just filled share the bottom of their garden and not see daylight or eat for days on end because their work was so consumed well that might be all well and good but for most of us the idea of being a full-time writer is a bit of a luxury we all know how hard it is to get published so how much time can we realistically spend on our writing while still making sure we have a roof over our heads also it's okay not to want writing to be the only thing you do with your life writers seem to carry immense amounts of guilt around with them they beat themselves up for not doing enough for not being good enough in fact often we are so down on ourselves and put so much pressure on ourselves it's a wonder we find any joy in writing at all sure being a good writer requires dedication and commitment and discipline there's no doubt about it but one can be a part-time writer and still progress still see targets and still achieve our writing dreams when did being a writer mean one has to be bleary-eyed neglects our friends and families and live on crusts of bread and water for weeks on end it's like we have to be ashamed if we are practically killing ourselves to achieve our writing goal there's a myth that unless we are waking up in the middle of the night and slowly becoming reclusive in order to write that we can't possibly be passionate enough about it or dedicated enough for it to be a success writers need to give themselves a break at the end of the day while it's important to work hard for what you want in life it's also important to enjoy the process so if writing part-time works for you and allows you to write at your leisure while also enjoy everything else that life has to offer that's fine in fact achieving a balance between your writing life and your actual life is healthy and something which should be encouraged we don't need to have a sob story we don't need to cripple ourselves and end up a stressed-out exhausted shell of a person to follow our dreams that's not to say that being a full time writer couldn't be brilliant but it needs to be because that's the right move not born out of some sort of guilt ridden weird idea that you're not a real writer unless you dedicate every inch of your being to it it's essential for writers to stop and ask ourselves is this working for me am i enjoying this writers don't have to be tortured sleep-deprived soars it's okay and possible to be a part-time writer and still be successful it's just that it may tell you a little longer to get there that's all and don't forget if you're struggling to write or finish your book our free writers tool can help with it you'll learn how to overcome procrastination get organized stay focused fine times are right and finally get your book published to get access now while it's still available simply go to http://www.writerslife.org/toolkit that's it for now be sure to give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel for more I'm Peter and I'll see you next time

atmosphere and not a character's reaction to the weather you don't want to go on too long the reader is apt to leap ahead looking for people there are exceptions if you happen to be Barry Lopez who has more ways than an Eskimo to describe ice and snow in his book Arctic dreams you can do all the weather recording you want avoid prologues they can be annoying especially a prologue following an introduction that comes after a foreword but these are ordinarily found in nonfiction a prologue in a novel is back story and you can drop it anywhere you want there is a prologue in John Steinbeck sweet Thursday but it's okay because a character in the book makes the point of what my rules are all about he says I like a lot of talk in a book and I don't like to have nobody tell me what the guy that's talking looks like I want to figure out what he looks like from the way he talks keep your exclamation points under control you are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words never use the words suddenly or all hell broke loose this rule doesn't require an explanation I have noticed that writers who use suddenly tend to exercise less control in the application of exclamation points don't go into great detail describing places and things unless you're Margaret Atwood and can paint scenes with language you don't want descriptions that bring in the action the flow of the story to a standstill try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip think of what you skip reading in a novel thick paragraphs of prose you can see have too many words in them Margaret Atwood says hold the reader's attention this is likely to work better if you can hold your own but you don't know who the reader is so it's like shooting fish with a slingshot in the dark what fascinates a will bore the pants off be you most likely need a thesaurus a rudimentary grammar book and a grip on reality this latter means there's no free lunch writing is work and it's also a gamble you don't get a pension plan other people can help you a bit but essentially you're on your own nobody is making you do this you chose it so don't whine about it you can never read your own book with the innocent anticipation that comes with that first delicious page of a new book because you wrote the thing you've been backstage you've seen how the rabbits were smuggled into the Hat therefore ask a reading friend or two to look at it before you give it to anyone in the publishing business this friend should not be someone with whom you have a romantic relationship unless you want to break up don't sit down in the middle of the woods if you're lost in the plot or blocked retrace your steps to where you went wrong then take the other road or change the person change the tents change the opening page Roddy Doyle says do be kind to yourself fill pages as quickly as possible double spaced or write on every second line regard every new page as a small triumph until you get to page 50 then calm down and start worrying about the quality do feel anxiety it's the job do give the work a name as quickly as possible own it and see it Dickens new Bleak House was going to be called Bleak House before he started writing it the rest must have been easy do restrict your browsing to only a few websites a day don't go near the online bookies unless it's research Helen Dunmore says finish the day's writing when you still want to continue listen to what you have written a dud rhythm in a passage of dialogue may show that you don't yet understand the characters well enough to write their voices reread rewrites reread rewrites if it still doesn't work throw it away it's a nice feeling and you don't want it to be cluttered with the corpses of poems and stories which have everything in them except the life they need Esther Freud says a story needs rhythm read it out loud to yourself if it doesn't spin a bit of magic it's missing something editing is everything cut until you can't cut No or what is left often springs into life find your best time of the day for writing and writes don't let anything else interfere afterwards it won't matter to you that the kitchen is a mess don't wait for inspiration discipline is the key trust your reader not everything needs to be explained if you really know something and breathe life into it they'll know it to never forget even your own rules are
