I know I'm not the only writer that signed up to do Camp NaNo and didn't finish. If you did, congrats! The rest of us... we didn't, and we felt like bad writers. We saw everyone else posting their banners and badges and it only made us feel worse. Can I tell you something? You are NOT a bad writer. Life happens. Maybe you missed a day and couldn't catch up? Yes it takes discipline, but is there another way? I'm here to tell how you can finish without having to write every day like NaNo recommends. Hello Lovelies - Weekly Writing Podcast For Writers by Author Rachel Cooper
For those of you just tuning in, November is the National Novel Writing Month, and if you were thinking about participating in NaNoWriMo this year, I have some pretty good tips on how to prepare yourself for success. I have no small amount of knowledge of NaNoWriMo, because for about three years, I participated in every November NaNoWriMo and every Camp NaNoWriMo available. I even became a Municipal Liason. After 10+ sessions, I have won some and I have lost some, so I am very well-rounded in what works and what doesn't. If you haven't done it before, the challenge is to start a brand new novel on November 1st, and make 50,000 words by the end of November. This is a huge benefit for authors who either cannot stop editing their every word, or have not figured out how to make their writing a daily habit. I have taken a break from doing NaNo in the last few years while I work on my backlog of partially completed manuscripts, but I still love the challenge and the sheer audacity of trying to write over 1600 words per day. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. Let me go over three tips that will help you be successful in doing NaNoWriMo this year. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/author-rachel-cooper/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/author-rachel-cooper/support

In this episode of The Burial Plot we have dug up author Sarah J Dhue.Sarah was born and raised in the Alton/Godfrey area of Illinois. Her first love is writing and she's been at it since elementary school. She self-publishes her creative fiction and writes mostly Horror and Paranormal fiction, with a little bit of Science Fiction. She completed her first book in the summer of 2010. That book, For Two Cold Minutes, was first printed locally in 2012, and finally became her first self-published book in August 2014. Sarah has participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) as well as Camp NaNoWriMo for many years. In November 2017, her novel Monsters was in the International Miami Book Fair. Her novel, Star Crossed, was her first major genre departure from her typical Horror, Paranormal, and Science Fiction into the realm of Romance. As well as her self-published books, her writing has been featured in her high school and college literary journals. Outside of academia, she has short stories in Volumes 3 and 4 of Lulu's Share Your Scare Anthology. While writing is Sarah's first love, she has degrees in Computer Graphics and Web Design and designs all of her own book covers. Outside of school and work, she is a coffee enthusiast who loves going to independent shops in her local area and when she travels – which she loves to do – checking out all of the cool atmospheres and delicious coffee they have to offer. She's an animal lover, enjoys playing video games, and believes in supporting artists of all kinds/mediums from all over the world! We pick her brain on all things self-publishing, including an overview of the process that Sarah goes through to unleash her works on the world. We get some social media marketing tips, in-person events, and the science of using emojis. Sarah shares with us her desire and efforts to support other authors and artists. She gives us an overview of her experience with NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo and why she feels it is a valuable exercise for writers. We talk about her journey into cross-genre writing and her book Demented that is officially associated with game giant Nintendo.Sarah's book Lake Vautour has a compelling and personal backstory to its creation as well as a personal connection to Brenda! In this week's episode, I provide an edited version of a Patreon-only episode that aired several months ago, on what I think it means for writers to be "good with words." Also, I signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo, and will be focusing on that during the month of July. If you'd also like to do Camp NaNoWriMo, you can learn more about it and sign up here: https://nanowrimo.org/what-is-camp-nanowrimo. ***************************************************************************************** Email: marisadellefarfalle@gmail.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/marisadee13 Instagram: www.instagram.com/marisadf13 Buy Me a Coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/marisadf13 I'd also really appreciate it if you could take a moment to rate and review this podcast on Apple Podcasts (or your favorite podcasting app), as it'll help a lot more people find out about this show!
This “week” we read The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart. We talk about the creepiness of the Ten Men, the quality of Reynie's character, the greatness of Stewart's action scenes, and how this book compares to the first. We also get a sequel to Sophie's “kill Mr. Curtain” fanfic take and hear Jacqueline's theory about the book's setting. Content Warnings: Kidnapping, running away from guardians, so so much of children in danger, severe injury, torture (both threat and actual), discussion of narcolepsy and “the old hag,” sleep-inducing drugs, threat of death, and discussion of mind control. Note: We recorded this episode in March but had to take a hiatus due to COVID curveballs and Sophie getting distracted by Camp NaNoWriMo (we'll talk more about it in our next episode). Also, we incorrectly refer to Reynie and Sticky's ages as eleven. They were eleven in the first book. Now they are twelve. Episode 13 The Book Evangelists discuss Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman Morning Chatter We haven't talked about books as recently as we had hoped we would. We are very glad to be talking about books with each other now. Camp NaNoWriMo is happening, and writing is hard right now. Book News! The Hugo finalists are announced and we are very pleased to have read so many of the nominees! Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman Smart, warm, uplifting, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . . the only way to survive is to open your heart. This blog post is spoiler-free. On the podcast, we discuss Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman in detail and our discussion in the podcast is filled with minor and major spoilers, so please read the book before you listen if you are into that kind of experience. We'll be here for you when you finish! More Discussion Book Marketing: Who is this book for? How much do we trust genres or cover blurbs? How does our expectation match the reality of the book? Should readers be warned about issues books? How do readers react to books when they get into the story and find that they aren't ready for this particular book? Writing “Unlikeable” characters Is Eleanor relatable? Is she realistic? Did your feelings about her change over the course of the book? Who does it seem like Eleanor is modeled on? How are characters informed and inspired? How much does the reader bring to their unique interpretation? How unreliable is Eleanor as a narrator? "I liked the sad parts. They helped me have my feelings. That's what books do." Lissa describing .... pretty much the entire book Coming Up Next episode: Marian and Lissa are looking at the popularity of the novella as a form and a length. As longtime NaNoWriMo writers, we both familiar with what a 50,000 word story can do. We will read and discuss All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey. NaNoWriMo It's our NaNoWriMo podcast, on which we put Sarah on blast, Molly tells us about her saggy middle plot syndrome, and Dean settles down into the lotus position to prepare for NaNo. But are any of them wearing pants? Cast Hosted by Dean Karpowicz, with Sarah Willis and Molly Krasel. Content Discussed About NaNoWriMo "The 'No' doesn't stand for November? My life is a lie. I have to quit the podcast!" --Sarah Sarah: "It's twelve small notebook pages per day." Molly: "It sounds so achievable when you say it like that." NaNoWriMo believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page. 8:21: Preptober "The NaNoWriMo cup: It catches your tears and your Reddi-wip." --Molly Are you getting ready to write with us this November? Whether this is your first time tackling a novel or your fifteenth, our NaNo Prep 101 Workshop is here to help you get ready to reach that 50,000-word goal. 15:22: The Numbers! "I am not dissing my mother. She knows what she did!" --Sarah Check out our statistics for NaNoWriMo 2018! Our writers continue to write and achieve great things; in fact, more novelists reached 50,000 words than last year! Writers in our Young Writers Program also continued to crush it, with an overall win rate of over 40%. Read on for more information about this November's numbers, leaders, and chart-toppers. 18:23: On Writing "I just bought a writing desk, like a crazy person." --Sarah Immensely helpful and illuminating to any aspiring writer, this special edition of Stephen King's critically lauded, million-copy bestseller shares the experiences, habits, and convictions that have shaped him and his work. “Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King's On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer's craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King's advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery. Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower and entertain everyone who reads it—fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told. 23:08: Camp NaNoWriMo "Camp NaNoWriMo happens in 'not November,' of that much I am sure." --Molly "I'm going to November the whole year, and you can't stop me!" --Sarah Camp NaNoWriMo is a writing event that happens in April and July. It's different from NaNoWriMo in November because you can work on any type of creative project, not just a novel. First drafts or revision, scripts or stories or poems or essays—all are welcome! Just set a goal and get writing.

In This Episode:The Book Evangelists discuss Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey Morning Chatter: In which we briefly discuss helping our children 3D print their homework. "I have persistence, which is like skills, by the time you finish." -Lissa And we explain how we failed to write our Camp NaNoWriMo projects. "April is the cruelest month." - Marian "Reading is awesome, you should just read." - Lissa "Well, there's always November, you can just recycle your idea then." - Marian Writing and Reading Experiments We both like to use writers challenges and hashtags on Instagram to reflect on and plan our writing projects. https://www.instagram.com/lissastaley/ https://www.instagram.com/marianrakestraw/ Lissa recommends: If you get really obsessed with a book you can go to twitter and find other people who are obsessed with the book. And then the author sees and joins in. Being a reader on twitter is the coolest. From @lissastaley she follows @charliejane and @scalzi and sometimes experiments with other writer's twitter feeds. Marian's brave experiment was joining #revpit on Twitter @marianrakestraw and actively interacting with other writers. She reports back on her survey of writer use of social media. Sometimes we leave the comfort of our reading and writing homes to interact with other writers. Marian attended a literature festival for teenagers, run by teenagers, called LitUp Festival and met multiple amazing authors including Gayle Forman and Jacqueline Woodson. Marian recommends: MasterClass, starting with Neil Gaiman Teaches The Art of Storytelling We reflect on signed copies of books, which books we keep, and sending books out into the world Around the 37 minute mark, we finally discuss Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey at Goodreads. Ivy Gamble has never wanted to be magic. She is perfectly happy with her life—she has an almost-sustainable career as a private investigator, and an empty apartment, and a slight drinking problem. It's a great life and she doesn't wish she was like her estranged sister, the magically gifted professor Tabitha. But when Ivy is hired to investigate the gruesome murder of a faculty member at Tabitha's private academy, the stalwart detective starts to lose herself in the case, the life she could have had, and the answer to the mystery that seems just out of her reach. (description from the publisher) Our discussion doesn't give away the ending but is filled with minor spoilers, so please read the book before you listen if you are into that kind of experience. We'll be here for you when you finish! "It might take a little while to get there, but I'll tell you everything and I'll tell you the truth." the quote from Magic for Liars on tor.com twitter that pulled Lissa in so hard to reading this book. How Lissa chooses books: Unreliable narrator! It's mainstream fantasy! This will be interesting to read with Marian! "On the whole I was impressed, and we know I am not often impressed." Marian We really like this book. As readers. And as writers. We were both delightfully surprised. We talk about the parts we like. We have fun discussing how really original books might reach readers in traditional publishing. Marian: Where would I shelve this in the store? Fantasy? Hard boiled detective? It's very original. It's not like a book that I have read before. Intriguing us for possible future reads: River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey (Also collected as American Hippo) Next episode: We are listening to the audiobook of Dodger by Terry Pratchett Find more at https://thebookevangelists.com/ Music Credit: The music used during transitions in our podcast is adapted from: Jazzy Sax, Guitar, and Organ at the club by Admiral Bob (c) copyright 2018 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/admiralbob77/58382 Ft: geoffpeters
In this episode, Story Grid Certified Editor Leslie Watts discusses writing with abandon with Grant Faulkner, the Executive Director of National Novel Writing Month. They talk about what it means to write with abandon, how to go about it, and why it's important. In lieu of an editorial mission, Grant shares the word sprint, an old NaNoWriMo practice to help you get your words down—just in time for Camp NaNoWriMo in July.
KWL US Manager Christine Munroe interviews Grant Faulkner, Executive Director of NaNoWriMo. They discuss: *National Novel Writing Month, the creative challenge in which authors write 50,000 words during the month of November, or 1,667 words per day. *The origins of NaNoWriMo, which began with 21 people in 1999 and has grown to support hundreds of thousands of writers each year. *Why November? If you can write a novel in November, you can write one anytime. It's a busy time of year leading into the December holidays. *NaNoWriMo's other initiatives, including Camp NaNoWriMo and the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program. *Even if you don't "win" by hitting the 50k word count, every participant is a winner for choosing to make creativity a priority. KWL is a proud sponsor of NaNoWriMo for the third year in a row. Stay tuned as we embark on this challenge in November with our annual KoBoWriMo team! www.nanowrimo.org
