HOLLYWOOD - Broomall, Pennsylvania artist David Hoffrichter is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with ten other artists and twelve writers at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 10th. His art is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41 which will be officially released on April 22nd 2025. David grew up in Broomall PA, right outside of Philadelphia and not too far from several museums that would direct his love of illustration for the rest of his life. David was raised on adventure stories, magical tales of Lions, Dwarves, Elves, and heroes of all ages. The one thing these stories had in common were amazing pictures illustrated by artists who lived very close to where David first learned to love art. From N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, and Jessie Wilcox Smith, to the artistic legends who are alive today. Still brightening the world with every brushstroke they make, David revels in his appreciation of art and how it has shaped his foundation from an early age. David loves to create narrative paintings that tell the stories between the lines. There is a mystery to be found in his works, that represents who he is as an artist, and how he sees the world. He cannot wait to share his world with you. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 9 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). devil can ever be justified. “The Rune Witch” is Jefferson's first sale. He hopes you enjoy it. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 42nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey (Wool), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 9 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later. In the 41 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 571 winners and published finalists. The past winners of the Writing Contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies. In the 36 years of the Illustrators of the Future Contest, there have been 418 winners. T

Kids love learning about space. NASA just launched its fourth Power to Explore Student Challenge, an exciting (and totally free to enter) science, engineering, technology, and mathematics (STEM) writing challenge for K-12th grade students in the United States. This interactive challenge invites students to learn about radioisotope power systems, a type of nuclear battery that has, for over 60 years, allowed NASA to explore the harshest, darkest, and dustiest parts of our solar system and enabled spacecraft to study its many moons. Then, armed with new knowledge and inspiration, write a short essay about how they'd use RPS to explore one of our solar system's hundreds of moons.  Submissions, limited to 275 words, are due by January 31, 2025. One grand prize winner from each grade category (K-4, 5-8, 9-12) will receive a trip to NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, to learn about the people and technologies that power NASA missions. Thank you to Kristin Jansen (Public Affairs Specialist and Stakeholder Engagement Lead for the NASA Radioisotope Power Systems Program) for sharing the information!(You can also learn more about NASA STEM on Ep 224 and Ep 231)Resources mentioned during the podcast:NASA RPS Website: nasa.gov/rpsPower to Explore Writing Challenge: nasa.gov/power-to-exploreRPS Writing Challenge Launch Video: YouTube Link NASA EXPRESS Newsletter: nasa.gov/stem/expressChris Woods is the host of the STEM Everyday Podcast... It juxtaposes poker, the synthesis of probability and human behavior, with psychic powers, the solution to both probability and the chaos of free will. What if every player is psychic? What if no player has an advantage? What if their lives are at stake? But the strength of the story is in the reluctant main character: Tyson Young, a middle-aged Aussie with an acute wit.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AI Fables Writing Contest Winners!, published by Daystar Eld on November 6, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Hello everyone! The submissions have all been read, and it's time to announce the winners of the recent AI Fables Writing Contest ! Depending on how you count things, we had between 33-40 submissions over the course of about two months, which was a happy surprise. More than just the count, we also got submissions from a range of authors, from people new to writing fiction to those who do so regularly, new to writing about AI or very familiar with it, and every mix of both. The writing retreat in September was also quite productive, with about 21 more short stories and scripts written by the participants, many of which will hopefully be publicly available at some point. We plan to work on creating an anthology of some selected stories from it, and with permission, others we've been impressed by. With all that said, onto the contest winners! Prize Winners $1,500 First Place: The King and the Golem by Richard Ngo This story explores the notion of "trust," whether in people, tools, or beliefs, and how fundamentally difficult it is to make "trustworthiness" something we can feel justified about or verify. It also subtly highlights the way in which, at the end of the day, there are also consequences to not trusting anything at all. $1,000 Second Place: The Oracle and the Agent by Alexander Wales We really appreciated how this story showed the way better-than-human decision making can be so easy to defer to, and how despite those decisions individually still being reasonable and net-positive, small mistakes and inconsistencies in policy can lead to calamitous ends. (This story is not yet publicly available, but it will be linked to if it becomes so) $500 Third Place: The Tale of the Lion and the Boy + Mirror, Mirror by dr_s These two roughly tied for third place, which made it convenient that they were written by the same person! The first is an eloquent analogy for the gap between intelligence capabilities and illusion of transparency by reexamining traditional human-raised-by-animals tales. The second was a fun twist on a classic via exploration of interpretability errors. As a bonus, we particularly enjoyed the way both were new takes on old and identifiable fables. Honorable Mentions There were a lot more stories that I'd like to mention here for being either close to a winner, or just presenting things in an interesting way. I've decided to pick just three of them: The Lion, The Dove, The Monkey, and the Bees by Jérémy Andréoletti A fun poem about the way various strategies can scale in exponentially different ways despite ineffectual first appearances. A Tale of the Four Ns (Neural Networks, Nature, and Nurture) by Anoushka Sharp An illustrated, rhyming fable about Artificial Intelligence that demonstrates a number of the fundamental parts of AI, as well as the difficulties inherent to interpretability. This is What Kills Us by Jamie Wahls and Arthur Frost A series of short, witty scripts about a number of ways AI in the near future might go from charming and useful tools to accidentally ending the world. Not publicly available yet, though they have since reached out to Rational Animations to turn them into videos ! There are many more stories we enjoyed, from the amusing The Curious Incident Aboard the Calibrius by Ron Fein, to the creepy Lir by Arjun Singh, and we'd like to thank everyone who participated. We hope everyone continues to write and engage with complex, meaningful ideas in their fiction. To everyone else, we hope you enjoyed reading, and would love to hear about any new stories you might write that fits these themes. Thanks for listening. Chatting With Sherri welcomes award-winning writer; Spencer Sekulin! When Spencer Sekulin isn't on the road as a paramedic or studying medicine, he is most likely writing. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Spencer fell in love with books at a young age, with authors like Terry Brooks and Eoin Colfer giving him an appetite for speculative fiction. Though he didn't begin writing until university, he quickly discovered that it was just as fun as reading—and the rest is history. His passions include emergency medicine, homemade coffee, travel obscura, and of course, writing.  Writers of the Future is Spencer's first professional sale. “The Children of Desolation” started as a story title with no story, and sat for several years before he stumbled across it again, whereupon several separate ideas happened to click together. “Sometimes stories take us by surprise, and then drag us on rides we didn't expect. In my case, this one started running right away, leaving me to catch up in its dust.” Most of it was written on a covered porch during a torrential downpour. Regarding the story itself, Spencer felt drawn to its protagonist, Tumelo Laska. His burden of heritage, and his moral struggle between doing what is right and putting family before all else, lends well to the sense of desperation of the post-apocalyptic setting. Though the world may end, humans have always loved, lost, and sought redemption—and always will.  Spencer hopes it is a story that conveys the importance of family, the indomitableness of the human spirit, and power of forgiveness. He hopes you enjoy reading it.    Spencer Sekulin. and his winning story will be published in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39  which has been on bestseller lists numerous times in recent years.

AMHERST AUTHOR WINS INTERNATIONAL WRITERS CONTEST Featured in New Release Amherst, Massachusetts author Marianne Xenos is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored, via remote video, along with eleven other winning writers and twelve winning artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 28th. Her story, "Moonlight and Funk," is illustrated by April Solomon of Laguna Beach, California who is herself a winner of the Illustrators of the Future Contest. The story and illustration along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 which was officially released on May 16th. Marianne Xenos is a writer and visual artist living in western Massachusetts. She works with mixed-media, photography, and fiction. She's a member of an artist-run gallery and creates artwork with a strong sense of fantasy and narrative. Although she's been writing since she first learned to read, Marianne only began sending out her stories for publication in the past year and a half. Marianne grew up in a blue-collar family outside of Boston. Her childhood was full of immigrants, builders, and working-class heroes-people who inspire the characters in her stories. Her father was a heavy-equipment operator who moved to Key West to look for gold, with only moderate success. He introduced her to treasure hunters, conchs, and deep-sea fishing. Marianne's mother, who never left New England if she could help it, taught her to dance as soon as she could walk--everything from Greek line dances to the cha-cha. In 2021, Marianne published her first short story, and was a finalist for Writers of the Future. The current winning submission which will be published in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 is her first professional sale and the title and story are not revealed at this point in time since they are in contention for the grand prize, the Golden Pen Award and a $5,000 cash prize. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored at the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards Gala in Hollywood, California on April 28th. Her story, "The Last Dying Season," is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 38. Brittany's story was released last year in Volume 38 but she was unable to attend the awards event due to giving birth to her 5th child. More recently, Volume 38 was awarded the Ben Franklin Award for Best Science Fiction & Fantasy this year by the Independent Book Publishers Association at their conference which was held in San Diego, California on May 5th. Brittany grew up as the only girl in a family with four brothers. She's reversing that trend with her own children—three girls and one boy. In 2009, Brittany graduated with her RN from Brigham Young University-Idaho. She received her BSN in 2010. Brittany has worked in both medical/surgical and rehabilitation specialties, but she currently enjoys work as a stay-at-home-mom. Brittany started writing at a young age, penning poems and stories, and filling an overstuffed nightstand with spiral notebooks, pens, and floppy disks (yes, those were still a thing in 2007). But after entering college, Brittany lost touch with her writing and didn't come back to it for several years. After having her third child in 2015 and needing a creative outlet, her passion for writing reignited. Once she found the Writers of the Future Contest, Brittany has not missed a quarter and has been a Writers of the Future finalist three times. She was a Published Finalist last year entering in the contest her story, “Half-Breed,” appearing in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 37. As a winner this year, her story, "The Last Dying Season," is published in Volume 38. Brittany lives with her husband and children near the Snake River in Idaho, where she swears it looks like a wintered Narnia for nearly half the year. She has many pairs of fuzzy socks. The Contest, one of the most prestigious illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). In the 39 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 547 winners and published finalists. The past winners of the Writing Contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies. In the 34 years of the Illustrators of the Future Contest, there have been 394 winners. The past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,800 illustrations, 390 comic books, graced 700 books and albums with their art, and visually contributed to 68 television shows and 40 major movies. royalties. Today on our show, we bring you a story by one of Allison's 7th grade students. She spent two months teaching English to 7th and 8th graders at a private school in Miami, and because she's her, she assigned personal essay after personal essay. She learned about their parents, what they eat for dinner, their nannies, grandparents, and favorite sport. They resisted getting personal, the same way Allison did when she started writing. Most people seem to struggle with writing about themselves, getting vulnerable, telling a story that might get them made fun of. But, not Webber. Webber is a kid who draws in class to stay focused. He pays attention and asks questions. When he speaks, his words matter. By the end of the first week of school, Allison had an inkling Webber was brilliant and unique. The Hispanic Heritage Month's Essay Contest was optional for the school but a graded class assignment for Allison's class. The students worked on the 500-word essay in class and those who weren't Hispanic were stumped. Allison told them to write about being stumped. On the day the essay was due, Webber handed in an incredibly mature and well-written essay. A week later, at the culmination of the week's Hispanic heritage celebration, Webber won the competition. Today, we bring you Webber's essay, completely written on his own. Allison did no editing. What's cool about this essay and many essays that are created from a writing prompt, is that Webber played the piano and let his mind wander. On this episode we talk about ways to relax our minds so we can write--either through being quiet, playing a sport, or using another art form. Webber is a 12-year-old student at Ransom Everglades Middle School in Coconut Grove, Florida. His story is called The Bossa Nova.Writing Class Radio is hosted and produced by Allison Langer, Andrea Askowitz, and Zorina Frey.
