Beauty journo/junkie Charisse Kenion presents a series of podcasts that are all about beauty - how we're measured by it, what we choose to spend on it, how we interpret it and more. Most importantly, this is beauty, beyond the BS.
This episode is an interview with makeup artist Juho Lehiö. Based in Copenhagen, Juho's work first caught my eye on TikTok and I fell in love with his style, even though if I had to, I think I would find it hard to pinpoint. He has often worked alongside the brilliant Inge Grognard, my favourite anti-fashion makeup artist, as well as the icon that is Pat McGrath – so I feel like he knows how to do any look, from the most simple and deconstructed to the most creative, refined look.We cover a lot in this episode; from Juho purchasing his first Wet and Wild makeup palette to learning how to treat his skin like a 60-year old woman, to how theatre and dance influenced his take on makeup and also how he's noticed that some makeup artists backstage at fashion week don't want to work on models with black or brown skin.We also discuss the value of feedback when it comes to your work and how you can stand against oppression when you work in the fashion space. Also, be sure to listen all the way to the end because I share a special announcement!LinksFollow Juho on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lehiojuhoFollow Juho on Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lehiojuhoWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck out my ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautymeBusiness inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
The 2025 Met Gala dress code was ‘Tailored for You' and on the night, many of the guests were inspired by the themes and concepts on show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute exhibition ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.'On the night we saw heavy influences of the Black Dandy, a little international flavour and a lot of tailoring with highlights coming from the likes of Zendaya, Lewis Hamilton and Teyana Taylor. In this Met Gala special I chat with fashion creator Aston Em, beauty editor Kayla A. Greaves and stylist Justin Friedman to find out their top 5 blue carpet looks. As well as sharing my own favourite moments, I also share information on the history of the Met Gala and how Monica L. Miller's book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity formed the basis of the exhibition.LinksFind Aston on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/astonemmmFind Kayla on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kaylaagreavesFind Justin on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tomfordforgucciWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionFind me on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautymeBusiness inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
Today's guest is Penélope Silva Miranda but you might know her by her social media name @documoda.The Documoda account is one of the most well thought out fashion history accounts anywhere on the internet. Penélope doesn't just spout opinions or react to current issues; she is someone who truly knows the value of research and has a genuine love for the deep dive and sharing it with her growing army of followers on TikTok and Instagram. In this episode Penélope is open on a wide range of subjects, from the danger of the trad wife trend to how having a child changed her life as well as her experiences growing up in Latin America, feeding her fashion appetite watching the iconic Tim Blanks on Fashion Files.Note:In the final five minutes segment near the end of the show we discuss forgiveness and second chances as the conversation turns to two problematic men: John Galliano and Kanye West.We do not support any kind of hate speech or antisemitism on this show, but if you don't want to hear anything at all pertaining to these two, please feel free to end your listening there.LinksWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautyme Business inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
This week my guest is Michela Wariebi, a New York-based makeup artist who was born in Monrovia, Liberia.I can't remember when or how I first discovered Michela, but I know why I followed her; she has this brilliant relationship with colour, especially when it comes to black skin, and she is an artist in the truest sense of the word.In this episode Michela is really open and thoughtful; she's honest about what she calls her trash morning routine and she shares which beauty innovations have inspired her the most throughout her 15 year long career. We also discuss the importance of grooming as a ritual and we talk about how beauty is not just about creating an aesthetic, it's also how we communicate. We also touch upon the recent conversations around why Pat McGrath Labs is apparently failing when Pat McGrath the woman is a unicorn in the beauty industry and the importance of archiving black beauty practices and products.Follow Michela on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/michelawariebi/WHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautyme Business inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
Today's episode is a Week in Beauty and it's packed with a few things that I'm loving right now, from YouTube accounts and books to beauty products and beauty news, including the story behind makeup artist Erin Parson's $800 moisturiser. As well as all that, I'm also sharing not one but two interviews with you; first I invite a very good friend of the show Felicia Walker, AKA @thisthatbeauty to tell us all about her latest venture, a workbook called Your Glow Guide and I also have a brand new meet the founder interview for you. I chat to co-founder of OSEA, Melissa Palmer, who alongside her mum Jenefer created a skincare line founded in nature that features one of the best smelling and performing body oils you will ever try.LinksHaus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation: https://go.shopmy.us/p-16263204Victoria Beckham Beauty brushes: https://victoriabeckhambeauty.com/en-gb/pages/brushes-by-victoria-beckhamMakeup by Nikki La Rose on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@MakeupbynikkilaroseBiobele Braide on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bio.beleSarah Fennel's Broma Bakery on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bromabakeryPreppy Kitchen on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@PreppyKitchenAston Em's video on Erin Parsons: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNdFCCDsv/ Erin Parsons original video: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNdFCFqC8/Javon Ford's analysis of Biologique Recherche La Grande Crème: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNdFCmSGF/Felicia Walker on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisthatbeautyOSEA Undaria Algae Body Oil: https://go.shopmy.us/p-16263154Andre Leon Talley's The Chiffon Trenches audio book on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0zgD9E3emRvpXfI94SpTcM?si=jVMe2_pWRMmEJUGjTWLdHgWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautymeBusiness inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
This week I've got a very special guest in the form of Aston Morrison, known on the internet as Aston Em, the creator of some of the most aesthetically striking fashion content videos you will ever see.Aston manages to create truly viral moments by showing the beauty that isn't always shown, particularly when it comes to black models and black designers. In this episode New York-based Aston shares on his first fashion memories including watching his singer mum Elizabeth get ready to take to the stage as well as the impact that Nerd members Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo had on his own personal style.Aston is also very open about how he sees the benefits of using AI as a creative tool, but not something that you need in order to create.LinksNymphet Alumni episode with Evan Collins of CARI: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1psqjoLoRPK9oo4Lbci2vS?si=ea44eeae87a84b2fAston's models you need to know video: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHn0KpExhJj/?igsh=MWFxamp0MnA3YjhvMA==Follow Aston on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/astonemmmFollow Aston on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@astonemmmWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautymeBusiness inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
This week it's a very niche episode focused on 90s hair, specifically the impact and artistry involved in black hairstyles of that era and how Nneka Allison, founder of HoochTeestyle Hairstyling is bringing them back to life in a fresh new way.I first heard about Nneka, AKA Tee via her PR Keysha Davis, and when she sent me Tee's press release I instantly thought that she must be based in Atlanta or somewhere else in the US because her work was so niche, so precise and so specific, but then I found out that not only is she based in the UK, she's basically down the road from me!In this episode Tee breaks down her quintessential '90s hairstyles and how cultural influences such as Freaknik (an annual spring break street party in Atlanta during the '80s and '90s) and musicians such as Lil Kim and Mary J Blige inspired her to bring these styles back to life.Artwork by Charisse KenionFollow Tee on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hoochteestyles/Follow Tee on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hoochteestylesWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautymeBusiness inquiries: info@charissekenion.com
Imagine going through your mum's closet and finding out she wears Tom Ford for Gucci? That's just part of Justin Friedman's undying love for everything Tom Ford and one of the reasons he started his fashion archive account @tomfordforgucci.I'm so excited to share Justin's episode with you; he's a New York-based stylist and creative director who fell in love with fashion from an early age and early on in this conversation we connect over that love and share on how it got us into not only collecting magazines but also trying to recreate what we saw in those magazines through drawing. As you can imagine the conversation also touches upon some of our most favourite ad campaigns ever which then leads us to discuss the state of the fashion industry right now and into the concept of aspirational advertising.Follow Justin at https://www.instagram.com/tomfordforgucci/WHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautyme Business inquiries: info@charissekenion.com

This week my guest is New York-based makeup artist and content creator Lila Childs. I've been following Lila for a few months because she really stands out for having this amazing ability to recreate some of the most beautiful makeup looks while also making her followers feel like they can do it too. In this episode we discuss celebrity glam squads and why it's time the media caught up with the importance of the teams involved behind the scenes, especially when it comes to those iconic red carpet beauty moments, because it's not just about fashion.Lila also shares on how it felt to become one of Pat McGrath's porcelain dolls when the makeup icon released Skin Fetish Glass 001 Artistry Mask recently. I loved listening to her share on how it felt to meet Queen Pat and she also gives us the breakdown on how to use the mask – although last time I checked it was still sold out online.Let me know if you know Lila's work already – you can send me a DM on Instagram or chat with me on Threads @charisse_kenion and if you're listening on Spotify you can tell me your thoughts direct as we can now chat to each other over there! If you're listening elsewhere please leave a rating or review for the show and remember there's also a newsletter that's free to read at beautymenotes.substack.com and I'm also over on YouTube too now.LinksPat McGrath on Desert Island Discs: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6fxVUzVULX88n4RWv28ntT?si=c12bb957c2944b83Follow Lila on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lilainc/Follow Lila on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lilachildsWHERE TO FIND MESubstack: https://beautymenotes.substack.comThreads: https://www.threads.net/@charisse_kenion/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charisse_kenion/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenionCheck me out on ShopMy: https://shopmy.us/beautyme Business inquiries: info@charissekenion.com

Today's guest is Celeste Bell, daughter of the one and only Poly Styrene, a woman who was an absolute punk icon. If you know that name, then you'll definitely know songs like Art-I-Ficial, Junk Food Junkie and Identity which Poly sang as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Through her music Poly Styrene inspired the likes of Neneh Cherry, FKA Twigs and many more, but it wasn't just her music, it was her attitude. Sadly Poly passed in 2011 from breast cancer, but I reached out to her daughter Celeste after seeing the brilliant documentary she directed, entitled Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche. In this episode Celeste shares on her mother's mental health - and how being misdiagnosed made things worse - as well as the things that made Poly happy, such as makeup, dressing up, reading magazines and enjoying a spa day. Celeste also shares her own experiences of motherhood, which inevitably draw comparisons with how she was raised by a mother who was often overwhelmed by life. By the way, right near the end Celeste shares a hilarious story about women in punk, so be sure to keep listening! TW: themes of religion, cults, mental health. By the way, look out for my video on Poly, especially if this is the first time you're learning about her. I'd love to know what you thought of this one, so if you're listening on Spotify be sure to drop a comment, as I can actually respond now! Today I've got the wonderful Vilde Feste, MAC Cosmetics Nordic Senior Artist as my guest. Vilde lives in Copenhagen and through her work as a makeup artist she covers Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Norway as well as working backstage at some of the most exciting shows at the international fashion weeks. For me Vilde is the queen of the lip combo so I really wanted to find out more about her inspirations. In this episode Vilde shares on how growing up in a small city in Norway and constantly playing with her image meant that she always stood out. I love how Vilde's story takes us from the time she bought her very first MAC Lipglass, to how she ended up being a Senior Artist for the brand. Along the way she shares on the benefits of living in Copenhagen and why she could never give it up for a move to New York or London. Tefi Pessoa is the queen of pop culture because she eats, sleeps and breathes it! I knew I wanted to start 2025 with Tefi on the BeautyMe Podcast, because if anyone can bring light relief and laughter to your day, she's the one. Her deep dives on everyone from Richard Gere dating Cindy Crawford, to the weird and wonderful past of the members of rock group Fleetwood Mac have kept Tefi's 1.9million TikTok followers engaged with a blend of nostalgia and comedy, but she also serves up laughs on the daily by sharing her own takes on current affairs as well as her dating life. Today Tefi not only keeps her followers laughing; she's also featured in fashion and beauty campaigns and she is the go-to when it comes to genuine, engaging red carpet coverage. But Tefi isn't just all about the laughs; she's a ride or die for her follower friends when they're looking for life advice and is an advocate for mental health and being confident in your skin. In this video episode Tefi shares her thoughts on everything on the morning bloat to why she's always down to clapback in the comments and the first time she felt like she was the star of the show. My FINAL guest of 2024 is here! I've wanted to have makeup artist Sara Wren on the show for so long, and I'm so glad that the Director of Artistry for Milk Makeup is our final guest interview. In this episode the Philadelphia-based makeup artist takes us behind the scenes of her life in makeup. From being inspired by Gwen Stefani and her first makeup counter job working for Christian Dior to how she became Director of Artistry for one of the most no-nonsense, multi-tasking beauty brands to come out of the 2010s: Milk Makeup. As well as being hilarious and enlightening, this episode is a great opportunity to learn more about beauty retail, because when Sara first started working at Milk Makeup, she actually worked in account management, spending much of her life on the road and in hotels. Today's guest is Charlotte Palermino, a woman who speaks her mind about the beauty industry and beyond, while also having an amazing skincare brand, Dieux. Charlotte is one of my favourite accounts to follow when I want products that work but don't necessarily want to buy a load of different things. In this episode she shares so much - from growing up surrounded by French women, to how people judge you based on your weight, to her post-election feelings and what's next for Dieux. TW: Early on in the show the conversation covers eating disorders. So if that's something that's triggering for you, please forward a good 10-15 minutes. Today's guest is Alicia Lartey, a London-based esthetician, skincare expert and cosmetic chemist student who also works in new product development. As such we talk a lot about skincare and Alicia's approach is really refreshing, especially when it comes to brands who have always put diversity at the forefront of their offerings - not just because it's a trend. However we don't just talk about the products we put onto our skin; Alicia is also candid about her journey towards feeling comfortable in her own skin, especially when it comes to her health. She also shares on her hilarious early experiments with makeup involving her mum's Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation! This episode is an absolute MUST for anyone considering working in the fashion industry as a hair or beauty pro. London-based Aminata Kamara is a hairdresser who's spent most of her life working in hair and has become known for her beautiful braided styles at shows such as Kenzo and Louis Vuitton. In July 2023 Aminata's stunning designs for the Dior haute couture show went viral and she learned just how useful social media could be in making connections. This conversation is an inside guide to working in the fashion industry and Aminata shares on every aspect; from assisting rather than leading, the importance of being organised and saying yes to every opportunity you can. Along the way we also discuss the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and Aminata shares how doing someone's hair, is never simply about creating a style; it's often a precious moment of care in an industry that can be pretty ruthless. It's a Week in Beauty and what a week it's been – there's a new Sephora in my hometown of Birmingham here in the UK and we've seen the finale of hit HBO show The Penguin which has given us a brand new super villain in the form of Sofia Falcone, also known as Sofia Gigante. I had to talk about this show because the actress playing Sofia, Cristin Milioti, goes through a stunning transformation thanks to the hair, makeup and wardrobe teams. Also I've got a new meet the founder interview with model and actress Denise Vasi, founder of Maed Beauty, which is all about skincare for your lips. Be sure to let me know if you've watched The Penguin and what you thought of this episode over on Threads @charisse_kenion or @charisse_kenion on Instagram. Today's guest is makeup artist James Boehmer, whose dreams took him from St. Louis, Missouri, to New York, to Japan – working at one of the most influential makeup brands in the world: Nars. In this episode James shares how he got to where he is today but also shares where he started, as a little queer kid growing up in St. Louis and watching glamazons such as Donna Summer and Debbie Harry on television. James shares some amazing stories from the late ‘90s when he first began working for Nars and how his entire life changed when he moved to Japan after the brand was purchased by Shiseido in 2000. It's the episode I didn't think I was going to make, because I didn't think I would end up watching the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show making its comeback. In this episode I talk to the brilliant Dominic Skinner, Director of Makeup Artistry at MAC Cosmetics and it is SUCH a good chat. Many of you will know Dom and his signature moustache from the hit TV show Glow Up, currently on Netflix, but he's been working at MAC for 20 years now, so you can imagine how many stories he has to share. We cover Dom's early days of working at MAC Cosmetics and he shares a wide array of life insights from how he truly embraced who he was, how he adapted after divorce and how he learned to be more selfish with his time. Of course we also talk about his new book, Glowography which is out October 24th! This is a great episode for anyone who wants to know more about working in makeup but it's also the perfect wake-up call for anyone who needs to hear it. Lisa Lyon is a legend in the bodybuilding industry. She won the first ever Women's World Pro Bodybuilding Championship, released her own workout book, and carried the icon Arnold Schwarzenegger on her shoulders. But Lisa Lyon was more than a bodybuilder and she definitely wasn't a 'gym bunny'. She was a dancer, actress and a performance artist intent on communicating through her body. I'd love to know if you already knew of Lisa, or if she's inspired you in some way after listening. I took a month off and now I'm back with an amazing guest! Gabrielle Alvarez is one of the most inspiring makeup artists I know. Her work is instantly recognisable for her sheer love of colour and a passion for working with all skin tones. Gabi was my guest back in May 2021, so, as you can imagine, we had a lot to catch up on. In this episode Gabi and I discuss labels and trends – we touch on the whole Youthforia black pigment in a bottle controversy and she's also the first person to record my new segment: The Final Five. The Final Five is where I hand over the show to my guest as their opportunity to talk about anything they want, anything that's important to them or something that's on their mind. Gabi's chosen subject was AI in the beauty industry. Also, full disclosure, someone, meaning me, forgot to press record on both of my recording devices, so while Gabi sounds crystal clear you will notice I'm not as clear. So I do apologise for that. Be sure to go follow Gabi on Instagram @thegabriellealvarez and head to my insta to see some video clips of our conversation @beautymepodcast or over on TikTok @charissekenion. In today's episode we're taking a special look at the hair and makeup of new film MaXXXine. Starring Mia Goth as Maxine Minx, the film is the third installment of Ti West's horror trilogy and is set in 1980s Hollywood. As you can imagine, the fact the film is set in 1985 means that the hair and makeup had to really support a range of characters and I was lucky enough to speak to Sarah Rubano head of makeup and Jaime Leigh McIntosh who led hair design. I'd love to know if you're going to see MaXXXine, or if you've seen it already so let me know over in the DMs on Instagram @beautymepodcast or find me on Threads @charisse_kenion. Today I'm talking about Suede magazine – a magazine that came and went in a blaze of glory in the early 2000s but gave us just 4 issues. The reason I'm talking about Suede is because while we only got 4 issues, that magazine absolutely became a new fashion bible for black women, women of colour, actually women of all skin colours. In this episode I share more on Suede's history inaugural issue, the team who made it happen and the huge impact the magazine had on black women and women of colour. I discuss the rumours surrounding the magazine's demise and I share an update I received via email from the magazine's former editor Suzanne Boyd. Don't forget my DMs are always open, so if you'd like to share an insight re Suede magazine, or anything else beauty related, find me @beautymepodcast on Instagram or @charisse_kenion on Threads. This episode is a perfume special that features scents from Phlur, Charlotte Tilbury, Fine'ry - all new to me - plus one very special scent that's been my go-to for years. Fragrance can evoke a memory or a mood in an instant and in that sense it's really powerful, so in this episode I discuss embracing a scent wardrobe, rather than sticking with one 'signature scent' for life. This week I've got a very special guest, Kayla Greaves. Born in Montreal, Canada, Kayla is a beauty journalist who lives in Brooklyn, New York and over the past 10 years she has made a name for herself as someone who speaks with authority when it comes to all things beauty. Kayla is the former executive Beauty Editor of InStyle magazine and she's written for the likes of Allure, Vogue and Elle. In this episode we cover so much! We start out with skincare before Kayla shares her early beauty inspirations and also how she's been embracing a slower approach to her mornings, and life in general. Along the way Kayla speaks passionately about thinking independently when it comes to our hair, and also shares on her experiences of going from the corporate world to deciding her own schedule as a freelance beauty editor. Finally we end up discovering our shared love of music - specifically Kacey Musgraves. This has to be one of my favourite interviews ever, so I'd love to know what you think! As always my DMs are open over @beautymepodcast on Instagram, and you can also find me on Threads @charisse_kenion. Andrea Lewis is an actor, filmmaker and content creator. In her mid teens she became well-known for her role as Hazel in Degrassi: The Next Generation and more recently she has also gone behind the camera, creating The Black Beauty Effect, a ground-breaking 3-part documentary series on Netflix. The show analyses and celebrates how black culture inspires and influences the beauty space world-wide and is essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand how far the beauty industry has come. In this episode Andrea breaks down her acting career – from just 2 years old! – to how she came to the decision that The Black Beauty Effect had to be documented and how she learned to navigate the entertainment industry as an actress and a consumer. This episode is dedicated to the movie Love Lies Bleeding - the second film from British director Rose Glass and I definitely think it's a future cult classic. The second I saw the trailer for this film, set in 1980s New Mexico, I knew I had to reach out to the heads of wardrobe, hair and makeup – that's Olga Mill, Megan Daum and Frieda Valenzuela, respectively. In this episode each department head shares their prep and the challenges they faced when creating the characters, particularly gym manager Lou, played by Kristen Stewart and bodybuilder Jackie, played by Katy O'Brian. Love Lies Bleeding came out in the UK last week and has been out in the US since April. Let me know if you've seen it!
