Ektoras Binikos has had quite a life in the New York cocktail scene. From Sugar Monk up in Harlem (which was recently named a 50 Best Discovery) to Bitter Monk in Industry City, the boozy entrepreneur is now at the helm of Atheras Spirits. They're making a bunch of new creations, ranging from a straightforward distillate flavored with fig leaves (which may or may not be pre-used by The Speakeasy's hosts) to an amaro based on the preservatives used in mummification. Ektoras sits down with Damon & Greg to talk about running a microdistillery in Brooklyn, sourcing weird botanicals, and what the customer can expect from these very off-the-beaten-path liqueurs.Plus, it's daylight savings time! Desperate for acceptance, I went to wild lengths in university to fit in. Years later, Leviticus, a book many avoid, transformed how I viewed acceptance. The background of a sacrifice called a sin offering reveals a deeper, lasting acceptance from God that goes beyond masks and striving.

There is another lie that threatens our confidence and causes our identity to sink: “I am what people think or say about me.” We can assign so much value to the opinions and words to the people that their words cause us to rise or sink. We can even begin identify ourselves by their words. Solomon is right, however, when he says, “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Prov 29:25). When we assign so much value to the opinions of people, we will only be caught in a trap. But trusting in the Lord and in his opinion of us only keeps us safe. This is God's opinion of us in Christ: “You are my beloved child. I love you. And you are simply awesome. My masterpiece. Created in Christ Jesus to do good works that I have prepared in advance for you to do.” Yet, believing this and living by it is harder than we can imagine. How can we live for an audience of One, who simple thinks that we're awesome? We can live this way by entering places of vulnerability. By opening ourselves up to our closest friends, what some call their “3 am friends,” and, by being truly transparent and vulnerable. As we enter these places of vulnerability, we will let our friends see all the way to the bottom of us (which isn't always so beautiful). By being transparent and authentic with them, we can break through the idea that we have to put forward a façade that people will validate. But it's not just that. The best friends will confront us with our sins to break us of any pride remaining. But more than that, our best friends will preach Christ to us, truly consoling and comforting us with the promises of our Savior God. Romans 1:1-13

When shame comes calling our name, we tend to do like Adam and Eve: we try to hide. Just as they fabricated an inadequate covering for their deep feelings of shame (out of fig leaves), we try to cover over our own shame with insufficient defense mechanisms. Jesus wants to show us a MUCH better way.

Pastor Troy Marshall joins us and brings a powerful Word from God about trust and faith! God gave us an understanding of the separation between good and evil. God never wanted us to experience evil, but gave us the choice because that's what relationships are built on. The devil came and lied to Eve with 'God didn't give you everything', what the devil offered was independence from God, this was about control. Adam & Eve's reality changed when they relied on their own souls instead of trusting God. Everything you need, God has placed into your life in abundance. God will not do what you won't do. You have to first pray, then trust God and go above and beyond. Do what you can do, then let God do the rest! You experience the life you chose to focus on.

A message dealing with the substitutes that we create in an attempt to justify and cover up sins.
Do certain passages in the Bible make you scratch your head? The temptation is to go, "Well, I'm just going to chalk that up to divine mystery and move on." The other temptation is to ask different questions than the text wants you to ask. We could look at a passage like this and spend more time wondering why this happens in a different order than Mark has it. It's fine to ask those questions, but only as long as we are asking what this text wants us to ask: "Why is this here?" So that is the question that we are going to ask today! As we dive into Holy Week this week, we are going to be looking at some of the little details on our way down the road to the cross. Since we have taken in the forest on our past journeys through Holy Week, I thought we would look at the trees, in this case, literally. Jesus makes important points about the Christian life, often using imagery of plants to help us see the point clearly if we take the time to see it. So today, we are going to look at our main point of this passage: Religious actions are no substitute for real faith in Christ.

If one listens to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders, there is only one conclusion: an end to the Gaza carnage is nowhere in sight. However, there may be more to the maneuvering on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian divide, notwithstanding both sides' seemingly uncompromising positions.

In this episode of Let's Talk, we delve into a thought-provoking message about fatherhood and the importance of being present for our children. Pastor Webster discusses the concept of fathers covering themselves with fig leaves, drawing parallels to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. This message highlights the consequences of neglecting our roles as fathers and the various ways in which fathers try to cover up their shortcomings. Highlights The Biblical Parallels: The message begins with an exploration of the biblical story of Adam and Eve, focusing on their use of fig leaves to cover their shame and guilt after their disobedience. The Power of Sight: Pastor Webster emphasizes how what we see can lead us astray, citing examples from the Bible where individuals succumbed to temptation because of what they saw. Fig Leaves of Religion: Some fathers use religion as a fig leaf to mask their shortcomings, portraying themselves as righteous and perfect individuals while neglecting their responsibilities. Blaming Others: Blaming others for our mistakes is another fig leaf discussed in the podcast. Adam blamed Eve, and today, individuals often shift responsibility instead of taking accountability. Sending Children Away: Pastor Webster addresses the practice of sending children away in moments of crisis, such as teenage pregnancy, out of shame, and argues that this does more harm than good. Forced Marriages: The podcast warns against the practice of forcing young couples into marriage to cover up indiscretions, emphasizing that it can lead to a lifetime of misery. Encouragement for Fathers: The episode concludes with a call for fathers to embrace their roles, be present for their children, and provide the support and understanding they need. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gnbc/message
Darren Carlson Genesis 3 Series: The Story of the Bible
All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work. – 1 Timothy 3:16-17 God speaks to us through the Bible. That Book embodies His words. Creation itself is the visible embodiment of His power and wisdom. It is the result of His words. This Book of His is, in a different way, the effect of His speaking. It is His written wisdom and power. There is His voice to us. The thunder and tempest are His loud voice of grandeur. The sunshine and the gentle breeze are His still small voice. But deeper, clearer, keener, softer, and still more penetrating than all of these is His written Word to us. The Bible is what it is because it contains the words of God. It is through the Word, and in connection with it, that God communicates with us. The Word revives: Your word has revived me (Psalm 119:50). The word produces faith: Faith comes from hearing (Romans 10:17). The Word strengthens, comforts, heals, nourishes, and revives. It gets into contact with each part of our souls and works its own work there. And it does this because it is divine. No human words could be trusted to work the work in a human soul so unrestrictedly. It is not eloquence, poetry, nor argument, but something more than all these together. It is something peculiar and indescribable, which man could not have formed and which he cannot understand, that makes it so suitable for the soul of a foolish and sinful man.
Ever covered your flaws hoping no one would ever see? We all have. Magnifying this, imagine Adam and Eve trying to hide their sins from the Almighty with flimsy fig leaf garments. However, as we discuss in this episode, our attempts to mask our sins are futile, and it's only through God's grace that we can ever truly stand righteous. We then transition to the Parable of the Wedding Banquet—an enlightening tale about a man attempting to fit into a royal feast without the right attire. This parable mirrors our relationship with God and the consequences of trying to be in His holy presence without accepting Christ's righteousness. But fear not, the righteousness that Christ offers us is not a burden, but a gift, a shield enabling us to stand fearlessly before God. Lastly, we dive into God's act of providing Adam and Eve with tunics of skin—indicative of the ultimate salvation that can only come through His divine intervention. We journey through various theories about these skins' origins and their profound significance. A casual look at fashion might seem removed from themes of sin and salvation, but as we discover, it's all intricately woven together. Our faith in Jesus Christ and His righteousness is the only true style that redeems us. So, join us in this inspiring discourse as we unwrap layers of faith, sin, and the eternal grace of God.The Mystic CaveAn exploration of the spiritual terrain on the far side of conventional religion.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify AI & Aliens Unveiled • The WordThe Word pulls the veil on AI and AliensListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
As Adam held fig leaves to cover the shame of his body, God asked him, “Who told you that you were naked?” Much later, after a wealthy fellow asked Jesus how to get religious rewards, Jesus ups the ante and tells him, “Go sell your possessions and give your money to the poor.” Jesus said this because he knew, just as Adam held his fig leaves, the rich young man held his possessions. What fig leaves are we holding? What lies or weaknesses are we trying to hide? And what do we do when dropping those fig leaves is easier said than done? In Christ Jesus, there is no condemnation, but there is also no room to hold to self-protective / self-destructive coverings.

Pastor Alex Sagot"God desires a life full of substance not a life of show." We step into week 2 of our Passion of Christ series with a message all about the importance of having a sincere life-giving relationship with God. Ps. Alex highlights Jesus cursing a fig tree & clearing the temple to teach us how God does not want us to appear like we're serving Him with empty religion, but wants us to be in relationship with Him. We're taught that a relationship with Jesus produces fruit in our life, helps us prune distractions, and keeps us prepared to serve Him.
