    Resources to Indigenous Students and Tribal Sovereignty within Maine: A Discussion with John Bear Mitchell

    Maine is an ancient landscape. With a geologic history that ranges back 400-600 million years ago, and inhabitants that have lived in these forests for 12,000+ years. The University of Maine sits right in the center of the home of the Penobscot people on Marsh Island. Issues of territorial rights, water and food scarcity, and sovereignty have been issues for native people of Maine since the colonization of the state. In this week's episode, I spoke with John Bear Mitchell; who is currently serving as an Educational Program Coordinator, University of Maine's Wabanaki Center Outreach and Student Development Coordinator, as well as, a Lecturer of Wabanaki Studies at the University of Maine in Orono. He has served on numerous museums and educational boards throughout the state with an emphasis on Maine's Wabanaki people. While speaking with John in this episode, we learned about his personal journey as an educator, resources to native students, tribal sovereignty, and more.     As we discussed options for students to find work in their fields post-graduation, we wanted to delve into an option often overlooked and that is graduate school! We sat down with two guests with different perspectives, one of a student currently in the process of attending, and another who has graduated and beyond. Our first guest is a current UMaine graduate student, Alex Scearce, and our last guest of the season is Dr. Daniel Sandweiss, coastal archeologist and professor of Anthropology and Climate Sciences.     Professor Michael Socolow: The Beijing Olympics, Russia, and TikTok

We talk about the Beijing Olympics, the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the way social media, such as TikTok, is shaping our perception of world events. Socolow is the director of UMaine's McGillicuddy Humanities Center and is an Associate Professor in the department of Communications and Journalism. Socolow is a decorated media historian, scholar, and former broadcast journalist with a niche background in Olympic Games coverage. He is also the author of a 2016 book titled Six Minutes in Berlin: Broadcast Spectacle and Rowing Gold at the Nazi Olympics.
