It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap another pre-season week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the start of Oilers' rookie camp, the latest on Connor McDavid watch, Mattias Ekholm wanting to re-sign, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. The Edmonton Oilers are on the ice for the captain's skates, rookie camp is set to launch, and we're inching our way closer to the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. The Oilers' rookies will take on the Flames' rookies this weekend at Rogers Place and then at the Saddledome, and that has me excited to see what our latest crop of kids has cooking. For the big club, we're still waiting for Connor McDavid contract news, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't starting to get nervous about how long this is taking. Sticking with the extension talk, I also went over Mattias Ekholm's desire to remain an Oiler and how I think that's both awesome and a tricky situation at the same time. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about my Internet before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The Oilers, meanwhile, are coming off a brutal Game 5 performance where they were completely outclassed in a 5-2 loss — generating next to nothing offensively and making costly errors in their own end.If they want any shot at forcing a Game 7 back at Rogers Place, they'll need a massive response tonight. The big question heading into this one: who starts in goal? Calvin Pickard was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 18 shots in Game 5, leaving the door open for Stuart Skinner to potentially reclaim the crease. Farace, Tim, and Anthony are all in the house tonight for Episode 122 — and there is no shortage of playoff chaos and sports drama to break down. Dave/Melo? Off on assignment... or more likely watching the Heat's offseason unfold. We start on the ice, where the Florida Panthers now lead the Stanley Cup Final 2–1 after a Game 3 beatdown in Edmonton. The Cats hung a 6–1 L on the Oilers, with Brad Marchand doing what Brad Marchand does (four goals in the series), Sam Reinhart cashing in twice, and Carter Verhaeghe playing like a man possessed. Edmonton? They lost more than the game—they lost their composure, racking up 85 penalty minutes and turning Rogers Place into a wrestling ring. McDavid and crew have some soul searching to do before Game 4.Meanwhile on the hardwood, the Pacers lead the NBA Finals 2–1 over OKC. Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin are out here embarrassing folks, with Mathurin torching the Thunder for 27 off the bench in Game 3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still doing MVP things, but OKC's depth is starting to crack under Indiana's relentless pace. Let's just say no one had "Pacers in 6" in their playoff pool — but here we are. Now… cue the MSG frustration. The Knicks are flailing through their coaching search, missing on candidates left and right with seemingly no real plan. Farace is already armed with receipts and ready to go off. Tim and Anthony will be there to stir the pot and keep the laughs going — or to just try and talk him down (good luck).Over in Pittsburgh, it finally happened — Aaron Rodgers is officially a Steeler. After months of dark rooms and vague Instagram posts, he finally signed on the dotted line. Not a soul on this show (especially Farace or Tim) is buying the hype — but it will be fun to watch the circus unfold from afar.Elsewhere in NHL news, Chris Kreider is now an Anaheim Duck, closing out his long run as a Ranger. Broadway will miss him, but Anaheim will gladly take the scoring touch and leadership. And on the baseball diamond? NYC is eating right now. The Mets own the best record in baseball — Farace is beaming. The Yankees lead the AL East — Tim is cautiously optimistic and trying not to jinx it. Anthony? He'll be happy to remind us that yes, the Marlins still technically have a baseball team. All that and more tonight on Episode 122 — packed with playoff swings, coaching dysfunction, NFL headlines, and plenty of New York swagger. See you there.

It's the Wednesday after the boys rallied to beat the Florida Panthers in Game 1, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap yet another Edmonton Oilers win. On today's podcast, I looked at the Stanley Cup Final, discussed the Oilers' comeback win, Mattias Ekholm's return, and more.I'm still on cloud nine after last night's Game 1 win, so I didn't really want to spend much time talking about anything other than what happened on Wednesday at Rogers Place. From the Mega Stream kicking off the day to making my way to the rink with Woz to stressing through a very tight game against Florida, everything about Wednesday night was a blast, and I could not be more excited about what the boys can do in the rest of this series. The stars shone bright, the depth came through, Stuart Skinner battled hard in net, and the Oilers ended up with their first Stanley Cup Final series lead in 35 years. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about standing at hockey games before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was fantastic this week, and the messages were all over the map. As always, finishing up the show with your opinions is my favourite part of the whole thing and something I always look forward to most. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode, because having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.

It was a tight checking game that was ultimately decided by one goal. Gregor talked about some of the historical feats that occurred last night with the Oilers comeback and Draisaitl's overtime winner. Frank talked about how if this series is going to be tight, the Oilers depth could be a massive advantage. One thing the guys both agreed on: this should end up being a pretty long series. After that, Tyler popped on with a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the last two teams who filled their Head Coaching vacancies, Brock Nelson's three-year extension in Colorado, and the idea of the players voting on more year end awards, which led to an interesting discussion about the NHL Awards. From there, the guys went more in depth on the Marco Sturm hiring in Boston and the Penguins deciding on a first time Head Coach themselves in Dan Muse. Dan and Shawn, recording the episode on site at Rogers Place, dive into the details of rematch that we have in store for us in the Stanley Cup Final. They talk about the Oilers and their chase for the Cup after coming so close last year, losing in Game 7 by one goal to the Panthers. They discuss the Panthers and if winning the Cup again this season will make them a modern-day NHL dynasty. McDavid and what winning the Stanley Cup means for his legacy is a big part of the show, especially when Rosen and Roarke bring in NHL.com's Edmonton-based staff writer Derek Van Diest to go into all the details of what has led the Oilers back to the Stanley Cup Final. Van Diest, with an assist from Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch, talks about the differences in the Oilers from last year to this year and why it can be series-changing for them. Van Diest also talks about what Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner went through after losing Game 7 to Florida last season and his process for overcoming that loss. Later in the episode, NHL.com's Washington-based senior writer Tom Gulitti joins Rosen and Roarke to go into Panthers talk, specifically about the impact Marchand has made since getting traded to Florida, Aleksander Barkov's role in keeping the Panthers on an even keel, the three players that play the villain role and why it all makes the team, according to Roarke, seem like a biker gang. They close the show by giving their predictions for the series and why they're leaning the way they are with Rosen saying their will be a new Stanley Cup champion and Roarke disagreeing.

Monday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded, edited, and is ready to help you kick off the rest of your workweek. On today's podcast, the guys welcomed Justin from Jacksonville to talk about his first trip to Edmonton, the Oilers' wins in Games 2 & 3, what the boys need to do in Game 4, and much more. The guys started the Monday episode of Real Life by welcoming Justin from Jacksonville to the podcast and discussing how a guy from Florida became an Oilers fan despite two teams being in his backyard. Starting in the 2018-19 season, Justin wanted to commit to an NHL team but didn't want to jump on a bandwagon, so he landed on the Oilers after working through some internal metrics that made sense.Diving into his first trip to Edmonton, Justin talked about how he ended up in the city earlier than expected because Jay promised him a ticket for Game 3 if he could get in on time. After changing his flights to get in a night early, Justin soaked up as much of Edmonton as he could with only a handful of hours before his first experience at Rogers Place. Getting into the game itself, Justin talked about how incredible the experience was to be at Rogers Place during the playoffs after watching it on TV for so many years.Looking at the game itself, the boys discussed the Oilers' unbelievable Game 3 result and how it was actually the Stars' best game of the series despite losing by five goals. Starting with Stuart Skinner's brilliance between the pipes, the goalie gave the Oilers a chance to win despite being shelled through most of the second period. From a Stars perspective, how can they not be gripping the stick right now with the way they're being stonewalled at every turn. Finally, Justin wrapped up his time on the podcast by giving the boys some gifts that he carried with him all the way from Jacksonville. From a collection of Floridian beers to some spirits from a local distillery to a corduroy hat that Jay has been wanting, the generosity was overwhelming and certainly appreciated.

Friday afternoon means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio has been recorded, edited, and is set to massage your ear feelings. On this week's podcast, the guys discussed what needs to happen in Game 3 defensively, Wednesday's loss to the L.A. Kings, and much more. The boys started the Friday podcast with a delicious debate about the Oilers' defensive game and what specifically needs to improve for the team to avoid the chaos that's been happening in their zone through two games. Whether it's better decisions with the puck, supporting each other as passing options, or throwing the puck up the middle of the ice, there are countless ways Edmonton can improve in their zone that should lead to better results. The guys continued the conversation about Game 3 with a look at Calvin Pickard getting the start in favour of Stuart Skinner, and gave takes on whether this was the right decision by Knoblauch. Given that Skinner has allowed 11 goals on 58 shots through the first two games, it wasn't exactly surprising to see the goalie swap for Friday night, but the move is also not without risks. The other angle is that Calvin Pickard played well down the stretch and probably earned an opportunity to get back in the crease. From there, the discussion turned to the opposite end of the ice and what the Oilers need to do to generate more offence than we're seeing. Starting with getting more pucks on net, the Oilers really need to simplify their game and start doing more to make life uncomfortable for Darcy Kuemper. We also discussed the need for more bodies to the crease to fish for secondary chances and greasy playoff-like goals. Much like on the defensive side of the puck, there is a lot of room to improve. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week. Even though the team is down 0-2 in the first round, the ONR squad felt positive despite the circumstances. The question remains whether or not the Oilers feel just as bullish on what they're capable of doing on Friday back at Rogers Place. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
