First episode of the ONEOUTS series where i sit down with combat atheletes/coaches and talk all things fighting. We recorded a podcast in October 2019 about intimacy in the home. Gerhard and I have recently been through a little journey of our own which has awakaned us both sexualy which is why we are re recording this episode. We share what we believed sex was before meeting each other and how that played out in our partnership. We share what has worked for us over the years and some of the truths we have come to over the last few months. We are both coming to realise that sex is life force and something we will always make a priority as we do life together. We touch a bit on sexual shame which I know many of our Maori and Island community hold because of religion, cultural conditioning, society and also sexual trauma. We are not sex educators but we have journed very deeply with intimacy and we can only share what is true for us. 

I sat down with Amber Puku to talk about her story and what lead her to receiving her moko kauae. Amber takes us on a beautiful journey into her childhood where she speaks about growing up both Pakeha and Maori, the effect her trauma had on her and how she could relate more in Te Ao Wairua (the spiritual world). She shares of her hikoi going back home to speak to her Kaumatua and the challenges that came with asking for permission to receive. Amber shares some bomb as advice for those approaching wahine with moko kauae! It starts with "Kia Ora..."

This episode was inspired by Men's Health Week and gave Gerhard and I the opportunity to reflect on his experience with anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation. Gerhard shares his definition and belief of what masculinity is and how it has shaped the way he views mental health. Gerhard sits down with his friend Dane Mulivai. Dane grew up in Inala and Goodna Brisbane and Miller Sydney. Dane is a Champion in multiple combat sports disciplines and has now made the successful transition to Coach and founding member of the Jungle Squad. Nix is one of the most raw and real people out there on the internet! Nix shares openly about the death of her son which kicked off her journey into a drug addiction, prostitution, drug dealing and eventually into prison. Social media became a platform she would use to share her daily life which has now blown up to be one of the most entertaining wahine on the internet.  Nix is an incredible story teller and shares a very powerful message about self responsibility, people being triggered by someones truth, haters and how she continues to move forward no matter what. We were so inspired by what she shared!!

Maikio McGrath speaks about Nga Tamatoa which was a Maori movement in the 70's which her father was apart of, the link between moko kanohi and gang members and how we need to get rid of that stigma and normalising moko within her family. Maikio is a high school teacher and shares a few tips on how to get started learning Te Reo and how she is able to carry her Moko Kauae in school and allow young people the opportunity to sit with her and talk about what it may mean for them.  

In this episode Mariah Tunoho shares her journey about being born and raised in Australia and how she felt like she didn't belong. She shares her journey of moving back home to New Zealand to find that sense of belonging and how learning Te Reo Maori helped her find that connection to her whanau and whakapapa.

I wanted to have a platform for these women's stories to be heard and as a collective we will be able to educate others on what this taonga means to us. I am joined by 19yr old Maumahara from Gisborne. We discuss what is was like for her growing up, what is a colonised way of thinking, connecting back to our culture, shame around wanting to connect back with our roots, what carrying her moko kauae means to her and so much more. A reminder that each individual that I interview is simply sharing their story and what they believe to be true to them. This is not about finding out what the right answer is as I feel the right answer is what each individual chooses to believe. Nga mihi xx

Vanessa attended a clay workshop to explore touch, sensuality and sisterhood. What we didn't know is how it would bring up old wounds in how Vanessa treated Gerhard in the past.
