The New Zealand Nurses Organisation are urgently calling for more Māori nurses in the workforce, and that the health system could do a better job at incorporating tikanga into practices. This comes as a new report was released by Nuku on Waitangi Day, emphasising “culturally safe” staffing levels, which should be developed by Māori nurses, and defined by hapū and iwi. Despite making up 17% of the population, the organisation says Māori nurses only make up 7% of the workforce. News and Editorial Director, Joel, spoke to the Kaiwhakahaere of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation, Kerri Nuku (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki) yesterday, about these calls from the organisation. They started off by asking her why the number of Māori nurses working in the country is such a concern.

Captain Peter Warner and his crew made a startling discovery as they sailed past the uninhabited island of Atta in the Pacific on 11th September, 1966: six naked, shaggy-haired teenage boys, who had been stranded there for fifteen months. Sione, Stephen, Kolo, David, Luke, and Mano had escaped from their boarding school in Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, having "borrowed" a boat and embarked on a spontaneous adventure that went horribly wrong when a storm left them adrift at sea.  For eight days, they battled the elements, surviving on coconuts, bananas, and rainwater before they spotted Atta. With their boat breaking apart, they used makeshift buoyancy aids to swim to the island, beginning their remarkable tale of survival. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the boys' ingenuity, faith and resilience had kept them alive; reveal the extraordinary lives they went on to have afterwards; and marvel at their well-maintained muscles…  Further Reading: • ‘The Miraculous Survival of 6 Tongan Boys in 1965' (People, 2020): https://people.com/human-interest/inside-real-life-lord-of-the-flies-survival-of-6-tongan-boys-54-years-ago/ • 'The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months' (The Guardian, 2020): https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/may/09/the-real-lord-of-the-flies-what-happened-when-six-boys-were-shipwrecked-for-15-months • ‘The real-life 'Lord of the Flies'' (ABC News, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDz-331V-pY Learn more about your ad choices.

Chris/Baz Europe appears to be the modern leader in construction of passenger ships, but are their any Australian ship builders of significance?Unknown, Chris Baz have you ever visited the Barcelona Maritime Museum. I recently visited and highly recommend a visit. Just a short walk from the port area, it was the former Royal Dockyards of Barcelona, and houses some great content from the 15th Century to present day including a replica Royal Galleon, over 60m in length and powered by 59 oars and the power of 236 rowers and the fully operation Schooner Santa Eulalia.Cruise newsPONANT – 35 Years of Exploration Guided by NaturePonant is celebrating its 35th anniversary by paying tribute to those who have been at the heart of its development and growth since 1988 with a new media campaign highlighting their expertise and commitment. The people of PONANT all share the same ambition to make travel a unique experience of discovery, understanding and meaning, with nature as a guide.Exactly two years ago, Captain Etienne Garcia reached the North Pole aboard the first LNG-powered hybrid electric polar exploration vessel. Maria, a naturalist, shared her passion for tropical marine life in Las Islas de la Bahía archipelago in Honduras. Sandrine, a naturalist, and expedition leader accompanied passengers across to Macquarie Island to educate them on penguin species, and Mick returned to Indonesia, to connect with local communities in his mission to craft sustainable and inclusive expedition itineraries. All embody the philosophy that has guided PONANT on its own journey for the last 35 years.35 years of environmental awarenessReducing emissions remains a major challenge for the coming years, which is why PONANT targets to equip its entire fleet with shore power by 2026.This corporate journey could not be achieved without the commitment of guests, partners, and the daily work of its employees, all committed towards more sustainable tourism.https://youtu.be/kH6sTNEoFhsSilversea Unveils 140-Day World Cruise for 2026, Its Most Diverse Voyage EverSilversea Cruises has unveiled details on its 140-day World Cruise 2026, ‘The Curious and the Sea'—the most diverse and immersive voyage in the cruise line's history, which broadens the largest collection of extended sailings in ultra-luxury cruising. Some school children in Tonga have received donated rugby boots from the Blues. Representatives from the Auckland-based rugby team travelled to Nuku'alofa to deliver 20,000 pairs of donated boots, shoes and sports equipment. It's part of the club's Best Foot Forward for Tonga initiative. The group also visited some of the areas worst hit in the eruption and tsunami in January. One school they visited used to have 400 students, but now only has 100 because some students are still fearful of going to school so close to the water. The sports equipment was delivered to 30 schools across the island. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6312332708112

There is a push to end an unfair pay gap within the nursing industry. Rallies will be held nationwide today; as primary healthcare nurses demand Te Whatu Ora pay them the same as their hospital counterparts. Currently primary health care nurses are paid up to 15 percent less, but in some cases the gap is wider. Nurses Organisation Co-President Kerri Nuku told Mike Hosking the unfair way this is happening is beyond them. She says primary healthcare nurses are out in the community, and is questioning why the Government isn't paying equity for all nurses regardless of where they work.
