Mental Health Transparency: It's All About MeRecovering from mental illness includes not only getting better, but achieving a full and satisfying life. Many people affirm that their journey to recovery has not been a straight, steady road. Rather there are ups and downs, new discoveries and setbacks. Over time, it is possible to look back and see, despite the halting progress and discouragements, how far we have really come. Each time we reach such a milestone, we see that we have recovered a piece of our lives and we draw new strength from it. The journey to full recovery takes time, but positive changes can happen all along the wayEMPOWER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY

Sticks and Stones: Words Hurt More Than Hands The phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones" is a well-known children's rhyme. It is often used as a retort to verbal insults or name-calling, suggesting that physical harm from sticks and stones might injure one, but words will not cause any physical harm. The earliest known use of this proverb in its full form, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," was recorded in "The Christian Recorder," a publication of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, on March 22, 1862. In this context, it was presented as an "old adage," indicating that it was already well-known and in use by that time.

Being an advocate is about speaking up on behalf of your child — asking questions, raising concerns, asking for help. It's also about teaching your child to speak up. But it's not always easy to do. Some parents find it difficult or uncomfortable to talk with educators. They might not feel it's their place. They may have had bad experiences in the past. And some parents just aren't sure what to say — or when. But when things aren't going well at school, you are a voice for your child, and not just at parent-teacher conferences. You know your child's strengths, challenges, and interests. Advocating helps make sure your child has the support to thrive

Observed each July and originally designated as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, BIPOC Mental Health Month highlights the unique mental health challenges and needs of historically disenfranchised or oppressed racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Black and Indigenous people and other people of color (BIPOC) experience a broad spectrum of ongoing discrimination, oppression, and inequity rooted in America's colonialist history, all of which foster both collective and individual trauma in those communities.

Schools across the country say they're seeing an uptick in disruptive behaviors. Some are obvious and visible, like students trashing bathrooms, fighting over social media posts, or running out of classrooms. Others are quieter calls for help, like students putting their head down and refusing to talk. The behavior issues are a reflection of the stress the pandemic placed on children, experts say, upending their education, schedules, and social lives. For students dealing with grief, mental health issues, or the layered effects of poverty and racism, big transitions can be even more challenging. Teaching your students the value of using words to solve conflict is a lesson they will use their entire lives. You can work together as a class to develop a phrase to help start the resolution process. For example, “Let's find a way to work together.” Learning to discuss desired outcomes and their feelings keeps them from assigning blame and focusing on the cause of the conflict. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

WHY, HOW AND WHEN I started a podcast. As a kid one of my greatest dreams was being on the radio. So why not start a podcast.Podcasting is one of the best methods to talk about something you enjoy or are passionate about. You are able to talk freely and engage with your audience on a personal level. Not only is this an effective way to teach your audience or share your understanding, but it also makes the experience more enjoyable for you.

The Black Family in The Black Community: Southside Chicago The black family has been a topic of study in many disciplines—history, literature, the visual arts and film studies, sociology, anthropology, and social policy. Its representation, identity, and diversity have been reverenced, stereotyped, and vilified from the days of slavery to our own time. The black family knows no single location, since family reunions and genetic-ancestry searches testify to the spread of family members across states, nations, and continents. Not only are individual black families diasporic, but Africa and the diaspora itself have been long portrayed as the black family at large. While the role of the black family has been described by some as a microcosm of the entire race, its complexity as the “foundation” of African American life and history can be seen in numerous debates over how to represent its meaning and typicality from a historical perspective—as slave or free, as patriarchal or matriarchal/matrifocal, as single-headed or dual-headed household, as extended or nuclear, as fictive kin or blood lineage, as legal or common law, and as black or interracial, etc. Variation appears, as well, in discussions on the nature and impact of parenting, childhood, marriage, gender norms, sexuality, and incarceration. The family offers a rich tapestry of images for exploring the African American past and present https://asalh.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/2021Theme.pdf #Chicago #southside #bhm #blackhistorymonth #Chitown #Thechi
Black History Month, which is celebrated each year during February, is a chance for Americans to learn details of their nation's history that, unfortunately, are far too often neglected and pushed to the wayside. As the saying goes, black history is American history — and it's a varied and rich history. A wise nation honors and learns from its past. It refuses to let the most important facts about our shared and collective memory disappear into the depths of forgotten history. What happened in the past shapes and informs where we are heading in the future, and it's of paramount importance to set aside a month for learning as much as we can about Black history.
Sometimes an individual may use race to explain or justify their own actions or inactions, for example not being able to achieve or belong or because of their race they should not try for a job. Some see it as a qualifier of privilege (racial preference). Still others may see race as a collective issue of relevance and validation (dealing with injustice based on race). And others are more focused on race as important to access rights and privilege (privileged majority). Should race matter? Can we ever get beyond race? What do you think? JUST BECAUSE RACIAL DIVERSITY EXISTS IN A GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCE DOESN'T MEAN THE SITUATION IS FREE OF RACIAL INEQUITIES. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
