Sammette George, a self-described "walking, talking, testifying miracle," recounts her remarkable healthcare journey spanning six months, which sheds light on her extraordinary resilience and unwavering faith. It all began with a seemingly innocuous cough after a flight delay in Florida, prompting Sammette's visit to the emergency department where pneumonia was diagnosed. However, her persistent cough led to the discovery of a lung mass, swiftly followed by a devastating stage IV lung cancer diagnosis. Undeterred by the grim prognosis, Sammette's faith guided her to trust the medical team at UPMC West Shore for her treatment. Despite subsequent discoveries of a brain mass and spinal issues necessitating emergency surgeries, Sammette maintained her optimism, believing in the silver lining amidst adversity. Remarkably, both brain and spinal surgeries were successful, with the brain tumor proving non-cancerous, downgrading her lung cancer to stage III. Commencing chemotherapy, Sammette encountered minimal side effects, leading to a successful lobectomy to remove the cancerous lobe. Today, Sammette stands cancer-free, attributing her recovery to the comprehensive care and efficiency of the UPMC team. Grateful for their familial support and swift actions, Sammette emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive outlook in the face of challenges, advising others to have faith and resilience. Her journey underscores the transformative power of faith, positivity, and exemplary medical care, encapsulating a story of hope, perseverance, and triumph over adversity. Sammette choice of UPMC exemplifies not only her resilience but also the profound impact of trust and optimism in overcoming life's greatest challenges.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As an All-American at Ohio State and All-Pro linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ryan Shazier was living his best life while excelling at the game he loves, a game that has given him so much. But then Ryan was forced to redefine success. Suddenly, it was no longer measured by tackles or sacks, but by purpose and faith.WALKING MIRACLE is the story of this new definition of success, following the arc from December 4, 2017, when Shazier was injured playing the Cincinnati Bengals, to his retirement. For three years, Shazier doggedly pursued a return to professional football. He took small wins as “first downs” on the drive to return to the field: moving his toes, walking, dancing at his wedding, and ultimately running and returning to the team. What Shazier didn't realize is that along the way, he was preparing himself for another purpose—that of father and husband, philanthropist, and football analyst. The journey was preparing him not for a renewed life as a middle linebacker, but a renewed life after the game.WALKING MIRACLE—the message on a bracelet given to him by his godmother—is the story of Ryan's comeback, but it's also a book of life's lessons, challenges, and a love letter to the power of positive thinking.

here are NO GUARANTEES in life. There are only TRIUMPHS and SETBACKS. My guest this week, RYAN SHAZIER, knows this all too well. His story is EXTRAORDINARY. In a single moment, he went from living his best life as an NFL linebacker to the challenge of simply trying to walk again. If you've ever had sudden and traumatic challenges turn your life upside down, you must hear Ryan's story. Because this week, you're going to learn how one man turned a potential tragedy into a NEW BEGINNING. Ryan was an Ohio State Buckeye who was a first-round draft pick at linebacker by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014. He quickly starred in the league, earning a trip to the PRO BOWL in 2016. But during the 2017 season, he made a headfirst tackle that left him unable to move his legs. Ryan underwent spinal stabilization surgery giving him the tools he needed to heal. His new book, WALKING MIRACLE, goes into detail about what he went through and was a must read for me as soon as I got a copy.Ryan spares no details in what he had to deal with after hearing news that he was paralyzed. But along with his mom and dad, Ryan worked hard to create the POSITIVE MINDSET he would need to start healing. The GOOD NEWS is that surgery worked, and eventually Ryan did walk again. In fact, 17 months after the injury he danced at his own wedding. But his NFL career was over. His identity was stripped away. And while he experienced the SUPREME TRIUMPH OF WALKING AGAIN, the setback of no longer playing the game he loved meant he had to pivot. Ryan's account of how he went from a pro athlete to a businessman is full of lessons you can use in your own life. He'll tell you how he was NEVER RESENTFUL and why that was so critical to MOVE FORWARD, instead of living in a past that no longer existed. There are so many great nuggets of WISDOM in his words that you must hear, especially Ryan's advice for making a COMEBACK after a traumatic life experience.Ryan Shazier embodies what it takes to OVERCOME tragic events in your life. His story will move you, and for those of you who need it, also help HEAL you too.

Cars are a literal miracle we have become so used to - we forget how amazing it is. Think about the fuel itself. Gasoline is combustible, dangerous, and potentially deadly if not used properly. But if you harness that incredibly powerful resource, you can make cars drive across the country and literal airplanes fly into the sky. Our emotions are the same way. Both big emotions and jet fuel, can both cause immense destruction if they're not controlled, or, on the contrary if you focus a more tactful release can create beautiful movement, expansion, and experience. TODAY I have with me, a man who is a walking miracle, Tom Shea, who shares how he was never expected to walk, much less drive and become a public speaker, but due to the tenacity and love from his mother, his story has a very different ending. I interviewed Tom for my book Because You Matter: How to Take Ownership of Your Life So You Can Really Live to write and share his story, along with others who boldly took ownership of their lives, and have become Victorious Souls. In this episode he and I read his story together and talk about it in greater depth. This episode is the 5th installment of this kind. I recorded this live on Facebook right after Shelter in Place was lifted during the pandemic in 2020. Get the book this story is in.
