Sean Puffy Combs, Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew fame, New Jack Swing/R&B pioneer Aaron Hall, and the latest to be named, and maybe the most outrageous is president of WWE wrestling Vince McMahon. If you haven't read any of the allegations against McMahon or watched any news regarding it, like this show today, it may not be safe for work. Per the court documents McMahon, while having a threesome, stopped, defecated on the head of one the participants, then went on to continue with the intercourse. Now a central theme in these cases is that the women involved didn't want to go as far as their more powerful male counterparts wanted to go, there were large age, fame and of course financial gaps in the relationships. As a coach at the club, he explains the importance of after-school activities and emphasized the power of pride and self-confidence. In 1992, Eddie Chacon broke out as one-half of Charles & Eddie, his soul music duo with Charles Pettigrew. Their single "Would I Lie to You?” was a major international hit. Chacon was just a kid growing up in Castro Valley, California, when he decided he would be a music star. Before meeting Pettigrew, Eddie had played in a teenage band with Cliff Burton and Mike Bordin, later of Metallica and Faith No More. He had an alliance with Luther Campbell of the infamous 2 Live Crew, worked with the Dust Brothers. These days, he's making oracular, synth driven soul music that draws equally on the mile deep grooves of Sly Stone's drum machine and the cosmic synth hymns of Alice Coltrane. His latest album is called Sundown, out now from Stones Throw. This week on Transmissions, Eddie joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his partnership with producer John Carroll Kirby, his fascinating years in the music industry, and his collaborative work with his wife, Sissy Chacon. Support Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Next week on Transmissions? A conversation with Surya Botofasina about his incredible synth meditations and growing up on Alice Coltrane's Ashram.

(1989) 2 Live Crew - As Nasty As They Want to Be Dem Vinyl Boyz Review (Episode 08) recorded August 2022 Shakin' what ya Mama gave ya this week on Dem Vinyl Boyz Episode 08 "As Nasty As They Want To Be" from 2 Live Crew. This historical album features dope classics such as "Me So Horny", "C'Mon Babe" and "Dirty Nursery Rhymes"!!! The 2 Live Crew consists of Chris Wong Won aka "Fresh Kid Ice", David Hobbs aka "Mr. Mixx", Mark Ross aka "Brother Marquis", and Luther Campbell aka "Uncle Luke", aka "Luke Skyywalker", aka "Captain D" aka "Luke"!!! Luther Campbell was the Quarterback for 2 Live Crew. he is synonymous with Miami. It's the city where he was born and raised. He first gained attention as one of Liberty City's premier DJs. If you had $50, Campbell happily showed up to spin records. “I did parks, car washes, wedding receptions, baby showers, street corners,” Campbell tells SPIN from his Miami home. “I was available.” Those early sets would mostly feature Herbie Hancock, ‘70s British funk band Olympic Runners, and some reggae records. “Miami's not really the South,” he says. “It's a melting pot of Bahamians, Jamaicans, Cubans, Dominicans, and Puerto Ricans.” Campbell himself is the son of a Bahamian mother and Jamaican father. Then hip-hop came along, down from New York. Campbell was instantly hooked. “I started playing these records at the parks and skating rinks,” he says. Campbell then came across a California duo called 2 Live Crew. The early iteration of the group was very different from what the group would become. Their first single “Revelation” and didn't contain a single bad word. “It was a ‘conscience' record,” Campbell remembers. The record's uplifting message wasn't exactly setting the charts on fire. Not to mention the group's lack of showmanship. “These guys were boring on stage,” he says. The 2 Live Crew's “As Nasty as They Want to Be” is a watershed album in hip hop history. It stands to this day as arguably the dirtiest record ever laid to tape, or at least one that millions of kids heard. What made it relevant, aside from the fact it contains enormously catchy beats and rhymes (albeit stolen for the most part), is it was for a period of time declared “legally obscene.” In their infinite wisdom, the state of Florida made the act of selling this album an arrest-able offense, an enormously controversial measure that exploded in their faces like a Luther Campbell facial once they realized people will automatically defy the norm and acquire anything they are told they cannot have (the “banned” album moved 2 million copies) Learn more about your ad choices. H-Town is an American R&B vocal group from Houston, Texas, United States. H-Town was founded in 1990 by twin brothers Keven "Dino" Conner (November 18, 1974 - January 28, 2003[1]), Solomon “Shazam" Conner (November 18, 1974) and their longtime friend Darryl "GI" Jackson (April 10, 1974), H-Town is best known for their hits during the early to mid–1990s.Formation[edit]The group grew up together in Houston's Yellowstone neighborhood located on the south side of the city. While attending Jack Yates High School, in 1991, Keven and Solomon Conner formed a band with Darryl Jackson. They were known as "The Gents" and recorded their first album, "It's No Dream," with producer Phil Blackmon. Shazam was chosen as lead singer at the time of recording this album, which featured the ballad "A Time for Us". The album was released locally and was not a huge commercial success. The group continued recording and performed at talent shows and plays when a local producer sent their demo tape to 2 Live Crew rapper and record label executive Luther "Luke" Campbell. After an impromptu audition, Campbell signed the group to his label, Luke Records. Producer Bishop "Stick" Burrell became their producer and positioned Dino as lead singer, seeing his potential and rare voice as the formula for success in the group and built his sound around him. [2] They took the name of the group, "H-Town", from the local nickname for the city of Houston, Texas, in which they grew up.Fever for Da Flavor (1993)[edit]H-Town's debut album Fever for Da Flavor was released on April 15, 1993.[4] The group achieved hit status in the United States with "Knockin' Da Boots", which became H-Town's biggest hit and also their signature song. "Boots" was a #1 hit on the R&B charts,[5] and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.[6] "Lick U Up", the band's follow-up single, peaked at #21. They signed on as a part of the 1993 Coca-Cola Summer Fest tour, which included fellow R&B hit groups Shai, SWV, Jade, Naughty by Nature, Silk and also included multi-platinum rap artist LL Cool J.[7] In 1994, H-Town won the Soul Train Music Award for Best New Artist. They also appeared on the Above the Rim soundtrack with their single "Part Time Lover", which was produced by DeVante Swing of Jodeci. It peaked at #9 on the R&B Charts.Beggin' After Dark (1994), Ladies Edition, Woman's World (1997)[edit]In late 1993, H-Town returned to the studio to record their second album Beggin' After Dark . It was released on November 8, 1994.[8] The most popular single from this album was "Emotions". It became a #11 hit on the Billboard R&B chart and reached #51 on the Hot 100.[6] Other tracks from the album included "Back Seat (Wit No Sheets)", "Full Time", "One Night Gigolo", "Tumble & Rumble", "Buss One", featuring reggae singer Papa Reu, and "Baby I Love Ya" featuring Roger Troutman. By the time H-Town returned to the studio to record Ladies Edition, they had undergone some changes. They recorded a cover version of The Persuaders' "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate" featuring Shirley Murdock for the 1996 film of the same name. The song became H-Town's first Top 40 pop hit in three years, peaking at #37.[6] They then cut ties with Luther Campbell, underwent a spiritual awakening of sorts, and became more aware of women's issues on their third album Ladies Edition, Woman's World.[9] It was released on October 28, 1997.[10] The album's general theme centers on a man's penitence for his past transgressions with his woman, a theme conveyed in songs such as "Don't Sleep on the Female," "Julie Rain" (a sobering account of spousal abuse), and "Jezebel." According to the liner notes, the album was dedicated to Nicole Brown Simpson and "all the women of the world." Twenty national women's telephone helplines were also listed on the back cover. Their one and only single from the album, "They Like It Slow" was released on September 23, 1997, and peaked at #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Founding member Dino Conner was killed along with his girlfriend in an automobile accident in 2003.[4] In 2004, the band self-released Imitations of Life. The surviving members continued to record and tour into the 2010s, collaborating with Pretty Ricky and Jodeci on a 2010 single "Knockin' Your Heels." 2 Live Crew was a successful rap group, hitting its stride in the 80s and 90s. On their 1989 album, As Clean as They Wanna Be, 2 Live Crew parodied Roy Orbison's famous song, "Oh Pretty Woman." Besides skewering its lyrics, 2 Live Crew appropriated large swaths of "Oh Pretty Woman"'s musical composition. Was that allowed under Copyright Law? The Supreme Court said "yes" in a 1994 case, concretizing the Fair Use Defense for copyright infringement and holding that certain transformative applications of copyrighted material were allowed under the law. We spoke to Mr. Bruce Rogow who litigated the case for Luther Campbell, 2 Live Crew's lead singer. Mr. Rogow has more than 55 years' experience in litigation and has taught courses at the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University Law Schools. Mr. Rogow shared with us his passion for copyright law, the story behind this fascinating case, and his indispensable advice for young law students. Here's a link to the case: https://casetext.com/case/campbell-v-acuff-rose-music-inc Correction: The podcast lists the album with the "Oh Pretty Woman" parody as As Nasty as They Wanna Be. In truth, the album with "Oh Pretty Woman" was 2 Live Crew's next album, As Clean as They Wanna Be Thank you for listening!

Here is an interview I conducted with Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew. It was originally done for SPIN Magazine, but they decided for one reason or another to not run the piece. Oh well...hope you enjoy this discussion of Luke's obscenity trial, the early days of hip-hop, and the current pro sports dilemma.
Campbell suggests that President Trump is attempting to start a race war in an effort to create an excuse to delay the 2020 election, then recounts the surreal scene at Mar A Lago when Trump hosted him, Eddie Murphy and Mike Tyson at a party in the 1990s. He upbraids fellow rapper Kanye West for his support of Trump, questioning his mental stability, while noting that his old friend Tupac Shakur would be at the forefront of the current civil-rights movement and “standing on top of a car” at protests. Campbell explains how he came to support California Senator Kamala Harris after criticizing her early on and endorses her as a VP pick--but calls on former First Lady Michelle Obama to do her country a solid and serve in that role. Finally, Mike and Uncle Luke recount their starring roles in the classic Ray Buchanan Dog Collar stunt at Super Bowl 33 Media Day.
We begin with Luke’s recounting of his arrest 30 years ago on obscenity charges, after 2 Live Crew’s album became the first in history to be ruled legally obscene, and the fallout that included the recording of “F--- Martinez” (his ode to the-then Florida governor). After Natalie suggests some potential remixes, one of which would serenade the current Senate Majority Leader, the conversation turns toward the fight against racial injustice and the power possessed by athletes. Campbell explains why he believes NFL and NBA players should sit out the current season and why college athletes (like Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard) are right to protest against racism at their institutions, including the plantation and slave quarters that exist on the campus of one prominent NCAA program. Campbell chastises NFL owners for being scared of the current president and campaigns for a pair of expansion teams owned by African-Americans who aren’t “sellouts like Jay-Z.”

Today's episode features hip-hop icon and long-time family friend, Luther Campbell aka Uncle Luke. Luke is a successful entrepreneur, record executive, producer, football coach, and Miami-based community and political activist. He put our hometown on the musical map by pioneering “Miami bass” rap in late ’80s. Incredibly intelligent, well-read, and unassumingly politically connected, his raw, refreshingly authentic, and hilarious personality and commentary keeps your jaw dropped while forcing you to challenge popular opinion and the status quo. Luke, best known for being the former leader of rap group 2 Live Crew, was party to Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., which was argued in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result, he has been described as "the man whose booty-shaking madness once made the U.S. Supreme Court stand up for free speech". Next year, 2020, will make 30 years since 2 Live Crew made history by birthing the black and white "Parental Advisory" warning label. Tune in as we discuss 2020 and why it's so crucial to actively involve yourself in our political process, his take on the evolution of music and hip hop, efforts to avoid tainting young kids' minds with today's polluted environment, whether he'll run for political office again, what's next for the show Warriors of Liberty City on Starz, and much much more!

“Warriors of Liberty City,” an Official 2018 SXSW Episodic Selection, is a docuseries from Executive Producers LeBron James and Maverick Carter, along with PGA® award-winning director and producer Evan Rosenfeld, that explores Liberty City – a crime-ridden neighborhood in Miami, Fla. that is arguably the NFL’s largest, most successful football factory. The series follows a season with the Liberty City Warriors, a youth football program founded by an unlikely mentor: hip-hop pioneer Luther Campbell, better known as “Uncle Luke.” Before Liberty City native Barry Jenkins won his historic Oscar® for Moonlight, the city was best known for producing some of the biggest names in football, including Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Devonta Freeman, Antonio Brown, Duke Johnson, and Teddy Bridgewater. It's a place synonymous with poverty and gun violence, but in the face of incredible challenges and personal tragedy, the Liberty City Warriors learn to triumph both on and off the football field. Beyond football, Liberty City Warriors Optimist Club is a youth organization that sponsors sports teams, dance, cheerleading, tutoring and academic support. Life, like football, is a contact sport, and for the kids and families of Liberty City, being a Warrior holds the key to both. Missed any of our broadcasts? Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Following a standout career at the University of Florida, Nat Moore returned to his hometown of Miami as a third-round draft choice of the Dolphins. Moore bridged the gap between two of the team's most prolific eras, hauling in 74 touchdown passes along the way, the majority of which were thrown by a pair of Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Bob Griese and Dan Marino. Joining O.J. and Seth in The Tank, Nat talks learning the ropes from another Hall of Famer in Paul Warfield, being in the huddle with Griese and Marino, feeling the wrath of the iconic Don Shula, and finding time to mentor “The Marks Brothers,” Mark Duper and Mark Clayton. Nat also discusses some of his most memorable moments in South Florida lore including his “Helicopter Catch” against the Jets, his role in helping the Dolphins hand the 85 Chicago Bears their only loss of the season, and how giving a young Luther Campbell his first DJ gig changed the face of Miami music forever. Rapper Luther Campbell (formerly of 2 Live Crew), 20 years later after going toe-to-toe with the Supreme Court Campbell has become more than just a entrepreneur, he's a social activist for the city of Miami. The infamous Miami-based rap group 2 Live Crew caused quite a stir in the early 90s when its provocative lyrics and album covers caught the attention of Tipper Gore and the like. Luther Campbell (once Luke Skywalker) of 2 Live, drove out of his way to talk with me about what it's like to work against the politicians and the money-making machine of the music industry. His new book - The Book of Luke: My Fight for Truth, Justice, and Liberty City - drops on Tuesday (August 4), and he offers a few tips for us who are trying to change the game and re-invent the way we do business. Luke calls me an innovative individual, but I am sincerely inspired by his ability to constantly stand out and re-invent himself. "I try to be a trendsetter," he says. "I never liked being a follower." Take his new book, for example. It's not necessarily a fashionable thing for hip-hop artists to write and release books, but Luke wants to break down barriers and start a new conversation. In these pages he covers what it was like to be coming up on the scene in Miami and how he changed the game for the better. It wasn't his original plan, but it's funny how things work out the way they're supposed to. "I wanted to be a promoter," Luke says of his first career move. As a DJ in Miami, it was his job to play new tracks and bring in unknown artists to perform. Finding labels for these artists was impossible. Without any labels in the South willing to sign, Luke created his own. He took his creative energy and his business smarts to help these artists sell their skills and see their success top the charts. But with this success came a bit of backlash from women's groups, politicians, and even fellow artists who did not respect his knack for sampling and reworking songs, film, and television into explosively sexy dance tracks. That was all part of the game, though, and Luke was conscious of every business decision he made. His technique? "I would plan my album releases alongside bigger album releases so people would see it in the store. My album covers would hook you in." Tricks like this can lead you to success, but you have to be prepared for any criticism that comes your way - even one in the form of a lawsuit. What Luke learned from his experience can apply to all of us who are struggling to start and succeed at our own business ventures. I've noticed that successful people always have someone coming after them, and not necessarily in a good way. "We live in a world where all you have to do is get people to complain, then they'll target you," Luke says. So how do you counteract this target? Keep fighting... That's why he put fight in the book title. "It is hard to beat the machine," he says. "But you can put some dents in it, and you can make people think. You can fight against the machine... [and] put the pressure on the machine to change." Luther Campbell's experience through the ins and outs and ups and downs of the music industry is cataloged in his new book, and the way he performs under pressure is inspiring. What you can take away from this interview and his book is how important it is not to take orders from anyone but yourself. As you explore your own business techniques, remember Luke's words: "Never stand down for anything." But with this success came a bit of backlash from women's groups, politicians, and even fellow artists who did not respect his knack for sampling and reworking songs, film, and television into explosively sexy dance tracks. That was all part of the game, though, and Luke was conscious of every business decision he made. His technique? "I would plan my album releases alongside bigger album releases so people would see it in the store. My album covers would hook you in." Tricks like this can lead you to success, but you have to be prepared for any criticism that comes your way – even one in the form of a lawsuit. As you explore your own business techniques, remember Luke's words: "Never stand down for anything."
