Send Victoria a text message! In this final episode of the Holiday Grief Series, I explore the power of reflecting on our past, especially when dealing with grief during the holiday season. It's about facing those tough memories head-on, much like a buffalo charges through a storm to find peace faster. By confronting these feelings directly, we gain insight into ourselves and can make better choices for our future.Reflecting on history isn't just personal; it applies to society, too. Understanding past events helps us break negative cycles and create positive change. As we look back at 2024 and beyond, self-awareness becomes key in shaping who we want to be.I share my own journey of growth—much like committing to fitness—and how it's similar to emotional healing. It takes dedication but leads to powerful inner transformation. The main takeaway? Embrace your past so you can rewrite your story going forward into 2025. Let go of perfectionism; focus instead on progress over time. Remember that you're unlocking your life's potential by opening your heart.I'm here for anyone ready to embark on this transformative path and encourage you all to spread this message of hope and empowerment to others who might need it, too!RESOURCES:Ep 221 Christopher CochranIG Live with Amanda PopovskiEnergy Healing Membership_______NEED HELP?National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. Whether that be about family we don't have relationships with, people we've lost and things we may not have. Trust me when I say, those social media holiday pictures and videos don't paint the whole picture. Don't get caught up in what you think you need during the holidays and focus on what the holidays are really about. Finally, always rely on faith even if you are not in need. Send Victoria a text message! In Episode 2 of my holiday grief series, I explore the tender journey of honoring lost loved ones during the festive season—a time that often brings a mix of joy and sorrow. As your host, I want to assure you that feeling these emotions is completely normal. Reflecting on my own experiences, I've learned that traditional ways of handling grief—like keeping feelings bottled up or avoiding memories—usually don't bring comfort. One story shared by a podcast guest really resonated with me; she grew up in a warm but emotionally reserved family when it came to grieving her mother's death. This episode offers practical ways to honor those we've lost. The six ideas shared in this episode are a starting point. Perhaps they will inspire you to think of other ideas. The point is not just to "get through" the holidays but also to embrace the gifts that grieving with others can bring. The ideas shared can support you in cultivating that within your family. Often, one person in the family has to go first - to initiate the challenging, unknown things and break the mold of the grieving norms we've all grown accustomed to. This episode may be just what you need to hear to start to do grief differently. I emphasize that everyone grieves differently, so it's important to communicate plans with family members and respect each person's readiness to participate—or not—in these activities.Ultimately, this episode encourages us all to find personal ways of remembering those we've lost; such gestures help maintain our bonds with them while adding depth and significance—even amidst sorrow—to the holidays ahead! Please revisit Episode 1 if you're dealing with estrangement issues too—and feel free to share today's message widely among friends needing similar support because sharing both love & loss has healing power beyond measure.

As I glance at the calendar, I realize it's that time of year again—though somehow, it seems to have arrived more quietly this time. With grief, it usually announces itself well in advance, looming heavily overhead and filling the air with a sense of oppressive anticipation. I've walked this path four times now, starting at the end of 2020. I wouldn't say it gets easier or harder, but it does become different.Does it still loom? Yes, in its own way. Is it as oppressive? Not like that first year. This is holiday grief, and sadly, it's something everyone will face at some point in their lives. There's no clear guidebook for navigating it, no perfect way to manage the milestones it brings. In this episode, I'll share my experiences and some suggestions others have shared with me about how to walk through moments like these. At the very least, I hope to offer some insight into what you might expect as you face your own holiday grief.

Send Victoria a text message! In the first episode of a four-part series on holiday grief, I discuss estrangement and its impact during the holiday season. Estrangement, a form of alienation within families, can arise from conflicts over values or unresolved trauma and affects relationships between parents, children, grandparents, siblings, and even extended family members. It often stems from disputes over values, lifestyles, past trauma, or unresolved issues. The holiday season is typically seen as a time for joy and togetherness with loved ones. However, for those experiencing estrangement, it can heighten feelings of loneliness and guilt. Societal pressure to maintain traditions doesn't help when your familial bonds are strained or broken.I offered several strategies to manage these challenges and share some of my journey. I hope to show healing is possible beyond inherited narratives.I encourage you to explore the truths about family stories passed down through generations. Reconciliation might be an option worth considering if circumstances allow it. Remember, there's communal support available as we navigate this path together. Day 5 of the 5 days of holiday grief is here! For the last episode of this mini-series, I want to talk about the balance of grief and gratitude around the holidays. And, explore the question of whether these two things can even co-exist. So many of us struggle with these contradictory emotions of grief and gratitude during the holiday season. And let's be real, it can feel like gratitude, joy, and merriment aren't even on our radar. Perhaps we're still harboring some anger or resentment or hurt. Maybe it's complicated feelings from years ago and you're still struggling—because that is the reality of grief. So, let's talk about how to navigate this very emotionally charged and complex time of year. PS—if you haven't listened to episodes 78-81 (days 1-4 of our 5 days of holiday grief), definitely go check those out because we cover some really important topics! Claire offered invaluable advice, such as embracing sadness, accepting and validating your emotions, and practicing self-kindness. She also emphasized the importance of self-care, including staying hydrated, getting proper rest, and maintaining good nutrition during difficult times. We talked about my personal experiences with grief and how, thanks to Claire's guidance, Betsy feels more prepared to cope with this holiday season. Claire also shared her experiences with holiday grief and introduced the "Empty Chair" concept—acknowledging the absence of a loved one, starting new traditions, and building a supportive environment. She encouraged having a "quiet room" where people can take breaks from festivities, free from self-judgment. We also explored the "Lumpy Legacy" concept – the idea that life is full of challenges and changes and that this is not the end of your story. This interview is a must-watch for anyone navigating grief. Claire will return in March 2025 to discuss grief in the workplace. Betsy highly recommends Putting Out the Fire, a book that significantly helped her healing journey, even though her loss of her husband Matt was four years ago.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/chatting-with-betsy--4211847/support.
SHOW NOTES We read the Bible verse that God will make all things come together for our good. Well, how in the world is what you are going through good? How can it ever be good? This is where I struggled in the beginning. I read about a Christian singer who lost her husband in a diving accident. I could so relate with the pain and confusion and then she shared how she had to trust in God and was given hope. She, like Monica while she was sick, had a hope I couldn't rely on. I had moments of hope but not an underlying confidence in God. I thought that all the success stories – all the giants in the faith were blessed and loved by God in a way that I would never understand. But I held on to those stories and replayed what they did when they were hurting. After over a year of fighting it out with God – and those were some tough days – my heart softened, and I began to trust God. I went back to those stories and started to believe that God is no respecter of persons – that if he did it for them – He would do it for me. Do you believe that yet? Boy, when you get a hold of that kind of confidence aka trust in God and HIS plan, then you'll see progress. Grief is the hardest thing you'll ever walk through but on the other side you'll be able to say – God will make all things come together for my good. Today I'm talking about one way to build that very needed hope! WORD of the Week “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. SHOW NOTES If you are new to the podcast, let me share a quick overview of the summit I am talking about. The Holiday Grief Relief Summit is a way to ‘escape' the normal holiday season. See when the holidays come, and they are coming – there's a whole ‘nother level of feeling your loss. You can't escape the happy holiday marketing that is everywhere – even in the big box stores now (what in the world, Hobby Lobby) – and the true meaning of Christmas is not only lost on our culture but it's hard to grasp in grief. It becomes the period of time that is incredibly heavy and doubly hard. Family traditions and social times around the holidays accentuate loss, and you may feel anger, jealousy or envious of those who are clueless to the type of pain you are dealing with…which feels like everyone. So, the Holiday Grief Relief summit was created to help you escape and be around those who aren't hard to be around - where other Christian women who get it - share their journeys (and journeys-in-progress) to give you great hope to survive the holidays and to know that you can breathe, laugh and truly live again. WORD of the Week Take the old prophets as your mentors. They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God. What a gift life is to those who stay the course! You've heard, of course, of Job's staying power, and you know how God brought it all together for him at the end. That's because God cares, cares right down to the last detail.
