It's Thursday, February 6th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Gunmen shot and killed pastor during Sunday church service Gunmen, affiliated with a cult group targeting Christian communities, shot and killed a 54-year-old pastor in Nigeria, Africa on January 19th. Pastor Yomi Adetula was at a Sunday morning service when he died. A local leader told International Christian Concern, “Adetula was a man of God who dedicated himself to serving the community. We face challenges from groups that oppose spiritual efforts, and we must advocate for greater awareness and collective action to protect the rights of Christians to worship freely.” Nigeria is ranked seventh on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian.  Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Kyrgyzstan further restricts religious liberty A law went into effect this month in Kyrgyzstan that further restricts religious freedom in the central Asian country.  The new religion law bans unregistered churches as well as sharing one's faith in public. A Protestant leader told the human rights group Forum 18, “The new law does not make anything better or easier for us to practice our faith, but makes it more difficult. I have stopped believing in any improvements in the laws or in the attitude of the government towards us Christians.” Argentina withdraws from World Health Organization Argentina announced yesterday it is pulling out of the World Health Organization. Through a spokesman, President Javier Milei said, “We Argentinians will not allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health.” The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to leave the World Health Organization last month. Both countries accused the organization of mishandling health issues like the COVID-19 pandemic.  Pam Bondi confirmed as U.S. Attorney General The U.S. Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as the next U.S. Attorney General. Trump's pick passed with a vote of 54-46 along party lines. Only Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted with the Republicans.  Bondi previously served as Florida's Attorney General. During her confirmation hearings, Bondi called out the Biden administration for targeting Catholics, concerned parents, and pro-lifers. BONDI: “Going after parents at a school board meeting has got to stop. For practicing your religion, sending informants into Catholic churches must stop!” Trump's Executive Order: “Keeping Men out of Women's Sports” President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday entitled, “Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports.” As the title suggests, the order protects women from having to compete against men, pretending to be women, in sports at schools and colleges. The order coincided with National Girls and Women in Sports Day. U.S. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said, “This executive order restores fairness, upholds Title IX's original intent, and defends the rights of female athletes who have worked their whole lives to compete at the highest levels.” Trump created a government-run sovereign wealth fund On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a government-run sovereign wealth fund. The U.S. would join other countries around the world with such an investment vehicle owned by the government.  Prominent examples include Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the China Investment Corporation, and Norway's Government Pension Fund. Trump suggested a U.S. sovereign wealth fund could be used to buy the social media platform TikTok. CeCe Winans wins two Grammys And finally, CeCe Winans, a Christian singer, received two more Grammy awards over the weekend. She won “Best Gospel Album” and “Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song,” bringing her number of Grammys to 17. Winans is known for her song “Goodness of God.” “And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God "I love Your voice You have led me through the fire In darkest night You are close like no other I've known You as a Father I've known You as a Friend And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah “ 'Cause all my life You have been faithful, oh yes You have And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God” Winans said, “Winning a Grammy is always an incredible honor, but to be recognized for music that uplifts and inspires makes it even more special. I'm beyond grateful to God, my team, and the amazing supporters who continue to believe in the music and the message.” Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 6th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. *This episode mentions suicide and may not be suitable for all listeners.* This week, we’ll hear from BeBe Winans, a celebrated figure in gospel and R&B music from the renowned Winans family, known for their deep-rooted musical legacy. Raised in a household steeped in gospel traditions and surrounded by the influences of Motown, Bebe experienced some of the ups and downs of the music scene as he and his sister, CeCe Winans, ultimately rose to fame as a beloved singing duo. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Tasha Cobbs Leonard, a powerful worship leader, pastor, and entrepreneur. Raised in a faith-filled family, Tasha was encouraged by her father, a pastor, to embrace her gifts. A “divine setup” led to her first album, and she went on to inspire millions with songs like "Break Every Chain," which grew from her own battle with depression. Whitney left first and I remember Natalie‘s hit song miss you like crazy released in 1989. Whenever I hear that song, I think of her and Whitney and I miss them like crazy. But they left us some singing memories together. There is an undeniable magic when Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole came together on stage. They left audiences breathless. Natalie Cole stood out as the perfect counterpart for Whitney, a true gem in a crown that also features Whitney‘s family, the Winans, and Mariah Carey.Their chemistry was electric, each glance and smile shared while singing spoke volumes. Who can forget that unforgettable night at the 2000 Grammy party? They were sharing a piece of their souls with us singing “This Will Be” by Natalie Cole.Their song choices were impeccable. They sang “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” back in the 1990s on stage together. The songs were experiences we relive whenever we hear them. Then of course Natalie gave a wonderful tribute to Whitney in 1990 at the 65th Academy Award Ceremony, now reminding us of Whitney‘s incredible legacy while showcasing the deep connection these two icons shared.Whitney and Natalie left  indelible mark in the hearts of their fans, giving memories that are both joyful and bittersweet.I'm Gail Nobles. Incredible news, yes, but many questions remain including: what evidence was tested and/or submitted resulting in the DNA hit? Why did it take so long to identify him? How and why was he missed? How many other women has he harmed and/or killed before and after? Listen as Laura and Kathryn break it all down and then join the conversation on social media and in the Crime Analyst Squad. On June 10, in the working-class community of Curtis Bay in South Baltimore, over 50 residents, activists, and supporters from around the city marched through the streets of Curtis Bay to hold CSX Transportation accountable for polluting their community, homes, and bodies with toxic coal dust. Even after an expansive scientific study co-sponsored by the Community of Curtis Bay Association, the South Baltimore Community Land Trust, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and the Maryland Department of Environment confirmed the presence of coal dust in the air of the South Baltimore community of Curtis Bay, CSX has denied culpability and called the study “materially flawed.” Residents say they're fed up with the company refusing to take responsibility for the coal dust, and with the city government for ignoring their cries for help for years, and they're not going to stay quiet.    “We got to stand together for Curtis Bay, for South Baltimore,” one resident and youth leader, Carlos Sanchez, told the crowd. “We have to remove CSX for the health of our communities.” With other locals watching from their porches, sidewalks, and storefronts, the crowd marched from the Curtis Bay Rec Center all the way up to the gates of the CSX terminal. There, they signed and delivered a giant “Eviction Notice” to CSX, a company that recorded over $10 billion in gross profits last year. In this on-the-ground edition of Working People, Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Curtis Bay residents on the day of the march and takes you to the heart of the action.    Speakers in this episode (in order of appearance) include: Shashawnda Campbell of Baltimore Community Land Trust; David Jones, a resident who has lived in Curtis Bay for over 35 years; Angie Shaneyfelt, a resident who has lived in Curtis Bay for 17 years; Angela Smothers, a lifelong resident of Mt. Grammy and Dove award winning artist Ce Ce Winans, who sang “Goodness of God,” on the American Idol finale on May 19, joins the team! Ce Ce shares how she fell in love with the Father; and when life got so hard she didn’t think she could take another step. Ce Ce also shares that the Lord is calling her into deeper water. She muses, “I pray God will work through me like he did in Acts!” “People brought the sick into the streets and laid them on mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them,” (Acts 5:15). Then, when Ce Ce won the Dove award for Artist of the Year in 2022, it was totally unexpected. She hadn’t rehearsed her speech. As she stepped up to the mic, what came out of her mouth was stunning and beautiful. Next, what will Jesus do to reach someone? Whatever it takes. Case in point, Jesus showed up at the 2024 American Idol finale through Ce Ce Winans and Roman Collins. Then Ben asks Perry for the story behind his new single, Tears This Side of Eden. Tears was birthed in suffering, not victory.Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“South Baltimore is a sacrifice zone,” Michael Middleton and Dr. Sacoby Wilson wrote in a guest commentary published in Maryland Matters this February. “The six communities that make up South Baltimore—Cherry Hill, Westport, Mt. Winans, Lakeland, Brooklyn, and Curtis Bay—rank in the top 3% of the state for environmental burden using a Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) screening tool. Curtis Bay, the highest in the state, is Maryland's poster child for environmental injustice. Industrial areas near Curtis Bay house oil tanks, a wastewater treatment plant, chemical plants, landfills, the country's largest medical waste incinerator, and more. Heavy diesel trucks frequent residential streets. The Wagner's Point and Fairfield communities that were once Curtis Bay's neighbors to the east are gone. Those residents accepted buyouts to leave between the 1980s and 2011 after a series of chemical spills and accidents.” In this episode, we continue our “Sacrificed” series by focusing on communities in South Baltimore and a story that quite literally hits close to home, less than half an hour from where Max lives. We speak with a panel of residents of South Baltimore about how they have seen their communities change over the years, what it feels like to be “sacrificed” by industry and their government, how they and their neighbors are fighting for change, fighting for justice, and what others in Baltimore and beyond can do to help. Panelists include: David Jones, who has lived in Curtis Bay for over 35 years; Angela Smothers, a lifelong resident of Mt. Winans; Carlos Sanchez, a youth leader born and raised in Lakeland; and Tiffany Thompson, who was born and raised in Cherry Hill and has lived in Curtis Bay for the past three years.Additional links/info below…Coal-Free Curtis Bay Facebook pageNicole Fabricant, University of California Press, Fighting to Breathe: Race, Toxicity, and the Rise of Youth Activism in BaltimoreNicole Fabricant, The Real News Network, “Opinion | CSX explosion in Curtis Bay should alarm Baltimore City and accelerate real change”Michael Middleton & Dr. Sacoby Wilson, Maryland Matters, “Commentary: Maryland deserves a better environmental justice bill”Chloe Ahmann, Baltimore Sun, “Curtis Bay residents deserve a coal-free future”Christine Condon & Dillon Mullan, Baltimore Sun, “Curtis Bay residents ask state to shut down South Baltimore CSX facility after study documents toll of coal dust”Aman Azhar, InsideClimate News, “On a ‘Toxic Tour' of Curtis Bay in South Baltimore, Visiting Academics and Activists See a Hidden Part of the City”Christian Olaniran, Adam Thompson, Caroline Foreback, CBS News, “Residents meet after air quality study reveals presence of coal dust in Curtis Bay”Studio Production: Maximillian AlvarezPost-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-real-news-podcast--2952221/support.

A four game series in Atlanta vs. the Mets turned into just a three gamer due to a rain out and New York easily took the rubber match on Thursday afternoon, 16-4. David & Eric begin with the Braves offense that is pacing MLB so far in production despite Ronald Acuña's Jr. slow start at the plate. However, Jarred Kelenic has continued hitting well and his average is at .462 on the young season. (08:00) The first time replacing Spencer Strider in the rotation did not go well as the Braves quickly found themselves down 7-0 with Allan Winans on the mound. David notes that this is not indicative of Winans place in the franchise's pitching hierarchy, but more a matter of how the AAA- Gwinett rotation lined up. (16:00) No official announcement yet on Strider's elbow as he met with the Dr. on Monday. (20:00) The bullpen combined for a weekend shutout vs. Arizona and that quickly changed on Monday in the 8-7 defeat. Pierce Johnson took the loss after allowing a trio of runs in the top of the 8th. (24:00) Around the league, the Orioles called up their top prospect, 20 year old short stop Jackson Holliday. Baltimore is so loaded with young talent, it seems like they are becoming an AL version of the Braves. (26:30) In last place of the NL East are the Marlins who have lost multiple pitchers due to injuries. Miami is just 2-11 on the season and have not yet won at home. Next up for Atlanta is a three game series in Miami this upcoming weekend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

For our final episode of 2023, Alexa is joined by sought-after choral director and vocal coach, Mark De-Lisser. He has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Jessie J, and Beverly Knight. He has also been involved in TV shows such as "Our Dementia Choir" with Vicky McClure and "The Masked Singer." Mark made the arrangement of "Stand By Me," which was performed by the Kingdom Choir at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. This performance has been streamed over 4 million times. Mark is here to discuss how to sing and teach the gospel vocal style. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gospel music is a Christian genre rooted in the black experience. Known for emotive vocals, call-and-response, and Christian themes, it often features choirs and instruments. Gospel expresses spirituality, joy, or sorrow, with improvisation common. Evolving into sub-genres like traditional and contemporary gospel, it has influenced various music styles, playing a significant role in religious worship and shaping American musical development. When it comes to the question of the cultural appropriation of gospel music, Mark believes that you have to give acknowledgment to where that music came from. You have to think about the composer and the spiritual background of where the music came from and reference it when you come to teach it.  The most important thing you need to remember when singing gospel music is that you need to believe in the words that are coming out of your mouth. Even if you're not a religious person, you should think of a thing or idea that lifts you up and gives you strength.  When singing gospel, allow yourself to be more vulnerable and get wrapped up in the emotion of the piece. Having a licence to be more vulnerable will make it more likely you affect the audience and make them leave with your story.  BEST MOMENTS  ‘Gospel is songs of good news'  ‘It blew my mind because I'd only heard traditional gospel music' ‘They were creating these songs out of a need for freedom'  ‘If you connect you will affect'  ‘We were born singers and society does its best to beat it out of us'  EPISODE RESOURCES  Guest Website: https://markdelisser.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @markdelisser & @mdlsingers Relevant Links & Mentions:  Artists Mentioned: Thomas Dorsey; Kirk Franklin; Maverick City; Mahalia Jackson; Andre Crouch; Walter Hawkins; Richard Smallwood; Donald Lawrence; Johnathan McReynolds; Daryl Coley; Take Six; The Winans; Mischa Paris; Tai Trabet; Anita Wilson; Mary Mary; Tom Odell; CeCe Winans; The Darkness  (Book) So you Want to Sing Gospel: A Guide for Performers by Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dane Chalfin Felton and Norton Community Gospel Choir  BAST Book A Call: basttraining.com/bookacall/ ABOUT THE GUEST  Mark De-Lisser is one of the most sought after choral directors and vocal coaches in the UK. “You have no idea how competitive the dental marketing niche is…” We have a feeling that today's guest, Xaña Winans, Founder of Golden Proportions Marketing, is about to tell us all about the quirks of her niche (and we can't wait to dive into this vertical!). Xaña is married to a dentist herself, and wanted to support her spouse starting out. Long story short, the agency was founded in Pennsylvania some 23 years ago. Golden Proportions Marketing today employs a team of 23, working with around 350 dentists, making around $3.5 million annually. Xaña is incredibly numbers-oriented, and she goes by the motto “Follow the profits first.” It's indeed fascinating to hear about her process from testing out new verticals to understanding when to call it for a new project or a venture. In this episode, she'll take you through the various stages of her agency, the evolution of their offerings, sales approach, and how she leverages speaking engagements to drive leads. Here's what Corey and Xaña cover in this episode: Learning from your mistakes and when to call it. How to add new service lines and the best way to test them. Why custom offerings work for Xaña's agency. How to weave in account strategists into sales workflows. Why it's better to hire based off of expertise and teach the vertical versus vice versa. Here are some actionable key takeaways for agency founders: Looking to branch out to another vertical? Be prepared to give it your all. For new recurring revenue products, test them out first for free to learn and adjust. Let the numbers tell you when it's time to hire sales. A qualified lead is a potential client whose expectations align with what you can deliver. When it comes to industry events, bigger isn't always better for driving leads. Bonita Burney Simmons Born to Sing... Without a doubt, Bonita has been anointed to sing! She was born on March 28, 1971 in Stamford, CT and was singing before she could even speak! As early as age 3, Bonita would hear lyrics on the radio and mimic exactly what she heard. During her first live performance, Bonita blew her audience away! People were so impressed and amazed, as they simply couldn't believe this big voice was coming from such a little girl! After spending her early years with her parents in Hartford,CT, her family relocated to Kinston, NC in 1974. Bonita would hone her skills while participating in music programs offered in Lenoir County Public Schools. She joined the chorus and in 5th grade, she was chosen to sing “The Way We Were” by Barbara Streisand. When she sang that song, there was not a dry eye in the room. During her 8th & 9th grade years, she was always active in the community, performing at events like NAACP banquets or weddings. She is a graduate of Kinston High School, Class of 1989, an alumni of Craven Community College with an Associates of Arts, and and alumni of the UAFWB Bible College where she graduated as valedictorian of the 2015 class with a Bachelor of Biblical Studies. To maintain a competitive edge, Bonita took years of private lessons with vocal coaches under the tutelage of Thomasine Hassell, Chantel Hollacheck, the late Wynona Daves, and Martha Mainor. Bonita's Singing Career... At age 12, she started her own gospel singing group, a trio called “Tried by Fire.” Determined and focused, Bonita thrived in her role as band leader and demonstrated her entrepreneurial skills at a very young age. Bonita would open up for all the national recording gospel artists who came to town like Shirley Caesar, John P. Kee, Luther Barnes, The Winans, The Williams Brothers and many others. Bonita has appeared and won first place on numerous occasions at the world famous Apollo Theatre in New York City. By the time she reached high school, she was already considered a professional singer! Today, Bonita is enjoying the flexibility of being an independent recording artist. Her talent is in high demand, as she is frequently requested to sing at venues and events throughout Eastern North Carolina! In June of 2017,  Bonita was nominated and won two awards given by The Rhythm of Gospel Awards for Traditional Artist of the Year and Best Performance by a Female Artist in Jacksonville, Florida. She also in July of 2017 was nominated and recognized as the winner in the Independent Gospel Artist category of Traditional Vocalist of the Year from the Radio Alliance Awards also located in Jacksonville, Florida.  Although she's experienced many tribulations, Bonita's life lessons are part of her unique tapestry that enables her to relate to people who are hurting. One of her biggest accomplishments is her outreach work with those who are incarcerated, sharing God's love through song. Indeed, Bonita has defined her own success, choosing to embrace an obedient lifestyle according to God's will for her life and career. She simply allows God to do the navigation and depends solely on Him to direct her career path- living by her motto, “If I make the way, then I'll have to pay the way. But if I allow HIM to make the way, he'll pay the way!" Bonita married her husband/manager, Eric B. Simmons in 1994. They have three wonderful children- Mykeva, E.J. and Landon. In October of 2000, Bonita was ordained into the Ministry as "Elder" by national Bishop Andrew Mcrorey Jr. of the Joy Mission Church of Deliverance, Hartford, CT. She also continues to serve Family Worship Center, "Ministry of Restoration" where the Pastor is George E. Fields Jr. Because serving and outreach is a part of the tapestry for Bonita's unique song ministry, being a part of the legacy of her father, the late, Bishop Landon O. Burney and the ministry that he founded is the reason she serves with great tenacity. Bonita and her family became members of Without Limits Christian Center in 2016 where the Pastors are James and Le'Conte McIver. Whenever and wherever there's a NEED; Bonita serves

When Sunday Comes: Gospel Music in the Soul and Hip-Hop Eras (Music in American Life) https://www.amazon.com/When-Sunday-Comes-Hip-Hop-American/dp/0252085477 Gospel music evolved in often surprising directions during the post-Civil Rights era. Claudrena N. Harold's in-depth look at late-century gospel focuses on musicians like Yolanda Adams, Andraé Crouch, the Clark Sisters, Al Green, Take 6, and the Winans, and on the network of black record shops, churches, and businesses that nurtured the music. Harold details the creative shifts, sonic innovations, theological tensions, and political assertions that transformed the music, and revisits the debates within the community over groundbreaking recordings and gospel's incorporation of rhythm and blues, funk, hip-hop, and other popular forms. At the same time, she details how sociopolitical and cultural developments like the Black Power Movement and the emergence of the Christian Right shaped both the art and attitudes of African American performers. Weaving insightful analysis into a collective biography of gospel icons, When Sunday Comes explores the music's essential place as an outlet for African Americans to express their spiritual and cultural selves.
