S5 E2 Gettin' Some Things Off My Chest

Hey, I listened to the Cult Podcast's coverage of the events of the past week and felt compelled to get on my soapbox, with my limited understanding of politics and statistics, and put my 2 cents forward. I apologize to any claims I may have made because I don't have the information to properly back it up. We live in a unique time where the abundance of news sources, coupled with an abundance of different investor's interests, make it so one event can seem like the Hindenburg disaster, whereas in a different paper, someone will make it out to be "some of the more panderings of the lamestream media" and many very good, honest, and virtuous people unfortunately place a lot of trust in news sources I'm almost certain are pandering lies, but I can't probably cite or vouch for, because I'm just too lazy and put a lot of my energy into music, and feel it would be too much work to be able to find exactly how and why a source is incorrect. What I can say is this:When someone says "All Lives Matter" in response to "Black Lives Matter", it is akin to calling up 911 when your house is on fire, mentioning casually as your kitchen burns down that your house is on fire, and having the operator on the other line, rather than calling an ambulance, correcting you, like a gradeschool teacher, to remember that other houses in America are on fire, too. Some people are unable to see that because of societal and contextual information in their lives which contradicts it, and I've been blessed to be able to live my own life and, through my own agency, decide for myself what is right; for those who feel walled in, by family members or friends, to take a certain political stance, I have compassion and empathy for you, and I hope that one day you can feel the courage to speak your truth without fear of losing the validation of your mother or your best friend.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Famousmusicianspodcast)

An idea popped into my head the other day, upon reading an email by a composer, Brian Field. He had done a version of "In The Bleak Midwinter" but called it by Christina Rossetti's actual poem name, "A Christmas Carol" and it was quite nice, but the divisis and various other aspects of the piece, also considering the rushed time frame made it difficult to spring upon my volunteer choir at my Lutheran church job with enough time. SO----voila! I have a podcast which is just recorded performances, and great music for the sake of great music, so why don't I do it on that? So I did. Additionally I figured, if I was going out of my way to do this recently composed piece and it was difficult, why don't I juxtapose this with other ridiculously hard Christmas pieces and recently written works? Here's what this selection has:1. A Spotless Rose-Howells multi-tracked by yours truly, and singing bass in it.2. Bach E minor prelude from the first book of the WTC3. Faure's Pie Jesu from the Requiem4. An arrangement of a 2 piano Debussy arrangement of Saint-Saen's Rondo Capriccioso--I didn't have time to record the other piano's part, so I just made a one piano version on the spot.5. Tuba Mirum into the Mors Stupebit bass solo sung by yours truly from the Verdi Requiem6. Siloti arrangement of the same Bach E minor prelude, transposed to B minor. Enjoy! Because I was testing live-streaming (and now have great proficiency with it, but then was not so great), I missed all of the recorded concert and just have the end of the last piece, a passacaglia section of the Biber violin sonata No. 3, with Alexandra Calabro playing the vioin, Kevin Lubin the viola da gamba (he's also a talented harpsichordist), and Ryan Closs on Theorbo. I started with the interview I did with them afterwards and then go into the music. Here is their bio! No point in putting in the program as you only hear the VERY last part of it:4&20 Strings, Long Island's premier Baroque ensemble, was formed in 2019. The trio consists of violinist Alexandra Calabro, theorbist Ryan Closs, and harpsichordist/viola da gamba player Kevin Lubin. Garnering attention by programing concerts in both traditional and unique spaces, the overarching goal of 4&20 Strings is to bring early music to Long Island. All members of the trio specialize in music from the Baroque and Renaissance periods, and are technically efficient on their respective instruments so as to convey a proper historically informed style. The name of the ensemble comes from the combined number of strings on the founding instruments; four violin strings, fourteen theorbo strings, and six viola da gamba strings.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Famousmusicianspodcast)

Thankfully, I am able to do so now, and another one of the things to be grateful for, despite the Unemployment Office being too busy to give anyone money and EMT workers likely all to be harmed from repeated exposure to Corona-Virus, is that this is a time for sedentary bits of media, lovingly recorded for posterity. Here is a link to Masterchorale's website: https://www.nycmasterchorale.org/The choir was ably conducted by Dusty Francis, as well as expertly accompanied by guitarist Giacomo Baldelli.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Famousmusicianspodcast)
