As we study Ephesians in worship, there's a portion that we aren't able to cover from the pulpit, but will likely prompt several questions. This section from the end of chapter 5 through the first few verses of chapter 6 is difficult for many of us to interpret. Fortunately, Dr. David Lincicum was willing to sit for an interview to investigate this passage. Dr. Lincicum is an Associate Professor in the Theology department of the University of Notre Dame and the new Director of the Master of Theological Studies program. Recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in May of 2024, today's show begins with the beautifully focused and kinetic “Running Pure”, an exhilarating, driving folk song with a fine vocal from Mariam. “Oh The Rain” is piloted by “Oscar”, Mariam's chiming 8-string baritone ukulele and features gorgeous, celestial piano work from Bob and a solid, driving conga groove from Craig supporting Mariam's evocative vocal-and-Native-flute conversation. “Open My Heart” is a fine, uplifting folk song from Mariam with sprightly ukulele and bouncing reggae piano and “Your Eyes Shine” is as sultry rocker from the “Smooth Sailin' Love Songs” LP played with a beautiful vocal from Mariam and controlled passion with fine, incisive playing from the whole band. “Celebrating Feeling Good” is a spacious, pretty, classically-inflected piece again driven by chiming chords from Mariam's 8-string uke and “Amaru Machay” from Mariam's “Gaea Star Goddesses” album is presented as smoldering, slowly intensifying rock with a compelling vocal from Mariam and imaginative piano touches from Bob. Continuing with the Peruvian theme, “Pacha Mama”, also from the “Gaea Star Goddesses” LP is given an energized, tight airing featuring percussion, vocal, flute and bass guitar overdubs. The smoldering “When You Touch Me” from Mariam's 2012 “Smooth Sailin' Love Songs” album is rendered spaciously and prayerfully with a beguiling vocal from Mariam and we close today's hour with the scintillating, gently insistent raga of “Happy To Be Alive” a pretty, spacious piece built upon Mariam's droning shruti box. Craig and Bob create a mesmerizing framework of congas and tablas for Mariam's gorgeous Eastern creation. The band gradually evolves the theme into a series of alternately beautiful and psychedelic variations before shifting into the simple, sedate folk of “I Only Want To Serve In The Light”, a pretty, gospel-influenced air given shape with Mariam's steady acoustic guitar chording. “Tiny Slipper In The Sky” is a beautiful midnight moon song with fine vocal work from Mariam and “Open My Heart”, a classic gospel song from Mariam, concludes today's show on a high note. Can I tell you something? There is a version of you that you still need to meet. I am not recording this episode because I've figured it out perfectly. The truth is, I have many moments where it feels easier to go through them with my heart closed and afraid. And the fact is, I'm afraid, but I tell myself that I'm going to dare to trust anyway. I've got baggage, but I will set my standards high regardless. My heart is broken, but I will dare to love again. I will show up in my life with my broken pieces because I believe that if I continue to open my heart to love…there lies the miracle I've been waiting for all along. In addition to comforting us during times of trials, like in Cheri's case, she also references the importance of knowing the Word of God in times of celebration. These two emotions of joy and pain are both a blessing when they are partnered with scripture and God's grace. For Cheri, those scriptures are also a guiding light in her songwriting process. Special Edition: This week the band took the 4th of July off and Bob decided to organize several notable outtakes from sessions from the last few years for a special outtakes' edition of the Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour. With Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, acoustic guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, ukuleles, sitar, celtic harp and dulcimer, Bob Sherwood on piano, tabla, and bass guitar and Craig Harris on Native drums and congas, today's show was all recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts. First up is June 2021's pretty, light “Summertime”, a high spirited summer celebration led by Mariam's acoustic guitar and fine vocals. “Dust Off Your Feet” was tracked in April of this year and is a blues-gospel workout with a busy, dancing vocal from Mariam and Ray Charlesesque blues piano from Bob. The blues find their way into the next track, “Transform” featuring an inspiring lyric from Mariam over a solid rhythm track of congas, piano and acoustic guitar. “Seven Teenage Boys” is a folky, upbeat story of maritime misadventure and rescue and “Open My Heart” is a classic folk song from Mariam with a powerful message. The band morphs effortlessly into the lovely, mystical “Healed By The Mystery” with a series of beautiful Native flute fanfares from Mariam. This track features a lovely vocal from Mariam and pretty, stately gospel piano figures from Bob. Following the break is a lightning-fast duo of Mariam's songs, the beautiful and mysterious forest tale “Ryalia” and the midnight moon dance of “Gypsy”, each featuring tight congas from Craig below Mariam's chiming ukulele. Recorded in early May of 2022, Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #490 begins with the sweet, blossoming, meditative “Oh May The Waters Bless You”, a fundamental groove featuring fine Native flute fanfares and a beautiful vocal from Mariam. “Let Your Life Sail Along” is a strangely mystical creation evocating mystery and wonder, bouncing on waves of ukulele, congas and imaginative, dancing piano. “Sailing Through The Flowers” is a profound and deeply affecting raga with the drone provided by Mariam's shruti box. If you have suffered from traumatic experiences with closeness (both in private or in business life), it is perfectly normal to react with fear - which can be expressed in all sorts of ways (arguing, distancing, crying, doubting ...). You are not wrong. Its just your system which goes wild due to former experiences because it does not want you to live through any hurtful stuff again. Webster's Dictionary defines the word "potential" as - capable of being, but not yet in existence. This definition alone can best describe the life-journey of Calvin Nowell. Pursuing purpose and destiny has been the path Calvin Nowell has taken for most of his life. Knowing it was there but not understanding how to manifest it was the question he asked for years. Eventually, he decided to start somewhere.On this path, there were a few obstacles that presented itself. One of the biggest hurdles Calvin has overcome was his struggle with his weight. Calvin unfortunately weighed over 450lbs. At six foot four he was displaying a 60-inch waist and a coat size of 64/66L. Although he weighed a lot physically, the emotional weight seemed to outweigh the pounds. Fear and insecurity were the driving forces behind his struggle.
