This week Features co-director Marjorie Alford talks with cartoonist Bianca Xunise about their graphic novel Punk Rock Karaoke. The two discuss the confusion of early adulthood, finding grace for the people you love, how a lack of representation in the media lead to Bianca filling that void for themself, and most importantly, punk rock. "I put so much of my heart and my own punk experiences into this story that I want to sit with it. I want to be with this beautiful piece of art that I made." - Bianca Xunise, on why they won't be rushing into their next project. Bianca Xunise is a cartoonist based out of Chicago, Illinois. Their work primarily focuses on the plight, joy, and daily struggles of misfits within the black community. In 2017 Xunise earned an Ignatz for Promising New Talent for their comic Say Her Name, an autobiographical story of police brutality and social justice. In 2020 Xunise earned their second Ignatz for their contribution to Be Gay, Do Comics published by IDW. Xunise has collaborated with Vogue, The Washington Post, The Nib, and Believer Magazine. They are also a contributor to the book How We Fight Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance along with Ta-Nehisi Coates, Tarana Burk, and Harry Belafonte. Bianca became the first nationally syndicated non-binary cartoonist when they joined the comic strip Six Chix in 2020 as their first black creator. Punk Rock Karaoke is out now! This interview features songs highlighted in Punk Rock Karaoke. Tracks included: Lake Shore Drive - The Cell Phones Waiting Room - Fugazi I am A Poseur - X-Ray Spex Photo Credit: Bianca Xunise

On Mexico's elections. [Full episode at patreon.com/bungacast] Mexico goes to the polls this Sunday with the ruling centre-left MORENA party holding a commanding lead. Anthropologist Roger Lancaster joins us to preview the election and look at outgoing President AMLO's record. What are the stakes in this election? Has Mexico bucked the trend of class realignment? Where is the 'Brahmin Left'? What is "republican austerity" and has this actually combatted corruption? What do make of AMLO's use of the military? Militarising public life or domesticating the military? What has AMLO done for the working class? And what might it do for itself? What is AMLO's populism and has he rekindled class consciousness? Links: The AMLO Project, Edwin Ackerman, Sidecar The Mexican Question, Ramon Centeno, Sidecar The Struggle to Be Gay—in Mexico, for Example, Roger Lancaster
Get Roger Lancaster's Book here: https://a.co/d/9Ah8432 Being gay is not a given. Through a rigorous ethnographic inquiry into the material foundations of sexual identity, The Struggle to Be Gay makes a compelling argument for the centrality of social class in gay life—in Mexico, for example, and by extension in other places as well. On Mexico, class, and sexuality. We welcome anthropologist Roger Lancaster onto the pod to talk about his new book, The Struggle to Be Gay – in Mexico, for Example. We discuss: How much is being gay tied to being modern? And conversely, how much of globalized culture is itself "gay"? Do you need to be middle class to be gay? Why did neoliberalism provide more sexual freedom than corporatism in Mexico? How was Mexico ahead of the US in introducing ‘progressive neoliberalism'? Is now a time of freedom, or should we think of it differently? In part two, we discuss AMLO's "synthetic" presidency, and the way peasant conservatism in central America has traditionally provided a boost to radicalism – and ask whether this is still the case. “As if people who aren't trans can't take something from our experiences and our stories. Well, we've been watching cis people tell stories forever, and we still take stuff from stories because we're all human beings.” - Mika Onyx Johnson The arts have always played a powerful role in influencing public perception. That's why it matters what stories we decide to tell, and who we choose to tell these stories. In this solo episode, I share with you the full story of healing my sexual trauma. We start by defining our terms – PTSD, Complex PTSD, and Developmental Trauma – my traumatic childhood experiences growing up gay in a homophobic community, the subsequent sexual trauma I experienced in my 20s, and my step-by-step journey to healing trauma and reclaiming my self-worth. About Me I'm George Lizos, spiritual teacher, psychic healer, and #1 bestselling author. Growing up in a small Christian community, I was judged and rejected for being gay and different. After a futile two-year attempt to change who I was born to be, I called myself a human abomination and almost took my own life. Fortunately, in my darkest moment, I saw the light and ventured on a healing journey of love, forgiveness, and spiritual awakening. Yet, my gay dating life since hasn't always been all roses and rainbows, and my past dramas and traumas have definitely kept things spicy. Fast forward past many awkward dates and disappointing sex, I Created Can't Host to challenge toxic gay stereotypes, explore the complex dynamics of gay sex and relationships, and create opportunities for healing and growth. https://georgelizos.com/ Episodes Mentioned Trending Gay Sex Toys with Agnetas Sergejevas: https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/iHQBFRwQ2zb Dealing with Unrequited Love: https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/FHRnBizQ2zb I Can't Be Gay: https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/YkcsCszQ2zb Connect With Me Instagram: https://instagram.com/georgelizos/ Website: https://georgelizos.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamgeorgelizos Facebook Group: http://www.yourspiritualtoolkit.com/ My Books Be The Guru: https://l.linklyhq.com/l/1TtCj Lightworkers Gotta Work: https://l.linklyhq.com/l/1TmKf Protect Your Light: https://l.linklyhq.com/l/1TmJd

Amphibious Subjects: Sasso and the Contested Politics of Queer Self-Making in Neoliberal Ghana (University of California Press, 2022) is an ethnographic study of a community of self-identified effeminate men--known in local parlance as sasso--residing in coastal Jamestown, a suburb of Accra, Ghana's capital. Drawing on the Ghanaian philosopher Kwame Gyekye's notion of "amphibious personhood," Kwame Edwin Otu argues that sasso embody and articulate amphibious subjectivity in their self-making, creating an identity that moves beyond the homogenizing impulses of western categories of gender and sexuality. Such subjectivity simultaneously unsettles claims purported by the Christian heteronationalist state and LGBT+ human rights organizations that Ghana is predominantly heterosexual or homophobic. Weaving together personal interactions with sasso, participant observation, autoethnography, archival sources, essays from African and African-diasporic literature, and critical analyses of documentaries such as the BBC's The World's Worst Place to Be Gay, Amphibious Subjects is an ethnographic meditation on how Africa is configured as the "heart of homophobic darkness" in transnational LGBT+ human rights imaginaries. Kwame Edwin Otu is a Visiting Associate Professor of African Studies at Georgetown University and an Assistant Professor of African American and African Studies at the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies, University of Virginia. He wrote and starred in the award-winning short film Reluctantly Queer. On today's episode of Way Too Interested, medievalist Dr. Eleanor Janega talks with Gavin Purcell about her current obsession: The conceptualization of sex. She explains how her field of study has been distorted in the popular imagination, how medieval people thought about sex, and the surprisingly similar way modern internet communities are talking about it now. Then, Eleanor and Gavin are joined by David Halperin, the Distinguished Professor of the History and Theory of Sexuality at the University of Michigan; he talks about the differing philosophies of sex offered by thinkers like Plato, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Sigmund Freud, and how societies — in both classical and modern times — have drawn lines between "acceptable" and "unacceptable," or "natural" and "unnatural" types of sex. Plus: How definitions of gender, eroticism, and virility have changed over time. Please follow or subscribe to Way Too Interested https://pod.link/1588020251 (in your podcast app of choice)! Frank and Kathryn are recapping Marble City Opera's fundraising gala, called “Diving For Pearls.” Kathryn and other singers performed several songs during the evening in flash mob style. Frank was the emcee. Kathryn told Frank where to stand during her performance of “Glitter and Be Gay” so that she could pretend to insult him during the song. Singer Whitney Wells is “best friends with” several Disney princesses at various princess parties around Knoxville. Frank recently hosted six episodes of Up Close for East Tennessee PBS. He recorded interviews with Ashley Georgakopoulos, Jeff Joslin, Logan Murrell, Dr. Jerry Punch, Leanne Morgan, and Don Dare. Kathryn still has yellow-jackets in her HVAC system. She tried to set up a tent in her living room but inadvertently bought a tent without poles. She had to stay in a hotel instead. Frank and Jere took care of next-door-neighbor Nancy's cat when she went to New Orleans. Nancy gave Frank and Jere a bag of coffee from Commander's Palace and some fig cookies from Angelo Brocato's. We start off what we are affectionately calling our "Vocal Damage" miniseries with one of the greatest soprano showpieces every written for the Broadway stage: "Glitter and Be Gay" from Leonard Bernstein's 1956 comic operetta Candide. The piece is (in)famous for being hard in just about every way a song can be hard, and is most commonly performed today by opera singers. All clips are from the 1956 Original Broadway Cast Recording with Barbara Cook as Cunegonde and are used in accordance with the Fair Use Exemption for criticism and commentary. “The Fringe” premiered on March 12, 2013. It was written by Julia Brownell, and directed by Dan Lerner, two more newcomers to the Smash family. The viewership was up this week! Up 220,000 from the previous episode, “The Fringe” was seen by 2.9 million viewers. We saw three songs and a reprise this week: one of which was a cover of “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies, sung by the Hit List cast. The other two and a half were original songs from all three of our musicals! Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman delivered us a reprise of “Never Give All the Heart” from Bombshell, and a Glitter-and-Be-Gay inspired number from Liaisons called “A Letter From Cecile.” Lastly, from Hit List we got a new song called “Heart Shaped Wreckage,” written by Julian Emery, Jon Green, James Lawrence Irvin, and Lucie Silvas. Hit List has booked a spot in the Winter Fringe after all! It’s only two presentations in shoebox, but Jimmy is convinced Hit List is good enough to outshine the venue. Which is good because the show gets picked up by Time Out and “a bunch of theatre people RSVP’d!” Back at Bombshell, Eileen has decided to produce the dynamic, technicolor fantasy that Tom and Jerry prefer, much to the schgrin of Julia and Derek. Karen is all lined up to star in Hit List, but Jerry can’t be “introducing Karen Cartwright” if she’s already been introduced at the Winter Fringe, which leaves Jimmy, Kyle and the rest of the Fringe crew understandingly ticked off about Karen’s backing out. At a coffee klatch in Madison Square Park, Ivy tells Derek that Terry Falls continues to derail Liaisons into a farce. But he replies that standing out as good in a bad show is a time-honored theatre tradition and to follow her instinct. She spices up the production’s press preview by adding her own brand of humor, but her good work threatens Terry Falls. Only in an 11th hour company meeting does Terry have the balls to invite the company to Bombshell’s new producer Jerry Rand continues to meddle with Julia’s script, suggesting they cut the intellectual downer of a song “Never Give All The Heart.” He and Eileen give Tom a challenge: change it into an uplifting song that makes them feel something in the next 24 hours. The composer puts a new spin on the song, making it a cautionary tale, empowered instead of wistful. But Tom’s direction puts Derek over the edge, quitting the show and storming out of rehearsal. And Eileen loves the work enough to crown Tom Bombshell’s new director. Derek’s departure from Hit List frees up Karen to perform in the second night of Hit List at the fringe, as well as making him available to watch her in it. Derek is taken by the show and the performances of both Karen and Jimmy. Scott Nichols, artistic director at Manhattan Theatre Workshop says the show is actually the kind of project he is looking for. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Happy Hour #80: Podcast and Be Gay - 'Candide' Support the Show ➤ Hold onto your optimism as this time around the riverbend Jimi and Tommy are talking all about Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Candide'.’ With a history full of as many twists and turns as the show itself, ‘Candide’ offers a wealth of fascinating discussion. The boys try and piece together why this show has had some many wildly different incarnations, debate the existence of philosophy in the show and try to answer the unaswerable question: what is the difference between opera and musical theatre? Candide (Original Broadway Cast Recording) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES If you’ve never experienced ‘Candide’ before, the best place to start is the 1974 ‘Chelsea’ recording as it includes clips from scenes as well as Bernstein’s beautiful music! We also want to send out a massive thank you to Colden for sharing his bountiful knowledge of the show with us and helping us traverse the behemoth that is ‘Candide.’ If you’re ready to start learning all about the different productions and versions of the show then the best place to look is the Sondheim Guide online! It’s so extremely comprehensive you’d think Tommy had made it. We didn’t get the opportunity to talk much about it in the episode, but it’s safe to say ‘Glitter and Be Gay’ is as iconic a musical theatre song as any other. Check out the delightful Kirsten Chenoweth singing it here in the Lincoln Centre production! Who among us can answer the eternal question - where is the line between opera and musical theatre? Tell us on Twitter! If you’re ready for some perplexity of a different sense to ‘Candide’ then have a look at ‘The Adding Machine.’ A Crooner’s Quiz Question Sammy Davis Jr. was originally slated to originate this role in it’s pre-musical incarnation. Who knows if the show have been such a runaway success were it more rat-pack in style?

On the Kinsey Scale, there’s the hetero, gay, and something in the middle called bi-curious. The Kinsey Scale is used in research to describe a person’s sexual orientation based on their experience or response at a given time. Jeff Jacobson, a coach, educator, and author, happily identifies himself as gay. He tackles issues such as societal chasms that exist between the two sexual orientations and the subtle misconceptions on being straight and being gay as he lays down the raw basics of the differences of views. Welcome to Season Three of Six Vulnerable Conversations. This version is Six Vulnerable Conversations Between a Gay Man and a Straight Man. Saying that title just add some sensation in my body. I am very happy to admit that. I’m very happy to have my good friend and colleague, Jeff Jacobson, come onto the show for the first of this show and it’s called a Be Straight, Be Gay. Just the aspects of what it means to be these types of social orientation. My history, Jeff’s history, and we get right down to the beginning, to some real deep, intimate conversations about the chargey topic of gay and straight. In our society, really gay versus straight, that’s what I was going to say. Really it is this antagonistic between the two and three and many multiple types of orientation. Love the show?
