Como os membros de um grupo assumem diferentes papéis sociais e por que alguns tendem a explorar e se beneficiar do esforço alheio? Essas questões foram levantadas pelo cientista francês Philippe Faure em seu último estudo, publicado recentemente na revista científica Nature. Faure é diretor do Laboratório de Plasticidade do Cérebro do CNRS (Centro Nacional de Pesquisa Científica), localizado no 5º distrito da capital francesa. Taíssa Stivanin, da RFI em Paris A experiência foi realizada com camundongos geneticamente idênticos do biotério da Escola Superior de Física e Química Industriais de Paris (ESPCI). Os resultados mostraram que quando os animais precisam se organizar espontaneamente para obter comida, alguns indivíduos assumem o papel de “produtores”, “exploradores” ou “acumuladores”.   “A ideia da pesquisa é tentar entender como esses papéis sociais são definidos entre os animais. Temos a tendência de acreditar, por exemplo, que o camundongo que lidera o grupo será o mais forte ou o de maior porte físico. O que demonstramos é que, mesmo entre indivíduos geneticamente idênticos, que vivem nas mesmas condições, alguns trabalham, enquanto outros se aproveitam. Tentamos entender por que isso acontece e por que esse comportamento se mantém com o tempo.”  Para obter a ração disponível na gaiola, os camundongos deviam pressionar uma alavanca, que liberava a comida dentro de um recipiente. Enquanto alguns animais realizavam a tarefa para obter a ração, outros apenas esperavam o alimento cair na tigela. Os animais foram colocados na gaiola em grupos de três. À medida que a comunidade se estruturava, diferentes equilíbrios de cooperação se estabeleciam: alguns camundongos chegaram a criar, por exemplo, um estoque disponível para o consumo coletivo.  “Quando fazemos essa experiência com camundongos geneticamente idênticos, percebemos que as fêmeas tendem a estabelecer uma organização social baseada no acúmulo e na recuperação progressiva da comida", diz o cientista. O interessante, destaca o neurocientista, é que esses papéis não estavam pré‑determinados e foram se construindo ao longo das interações. A atividade neuronal dos animais, que compartilharam as experiências na mesma gaiola, foi registrada de forma contínua por câmeras ao longo de várias semanas. Ela mostrou que nos camundongos trabalhadores, o circuito dopaminérgico é ativado quando eles apertam a alavanca. A dopamina é o neurotransmissor associado à recompensa, à motivação e à tomada de decisões.   Já nos animais que apenas consomem o alimento sem esforço, o pico ocorre quando eles comem, mas principalmente quando observam outro membro do grupo pressionar a alavanca — ou seja, trabalhar por eles.  “Eles consolidaram um esquema mental baseado na obtenção da recompensa quando outro animal pressiona a alavanca. Temos claramente uma definição dos papéis em função das diferenças indicadas pelos sistemas dopaminérgicos durante a atividade”, explica o pesquisador. Machos competitivos, fêmeas cooperativas Outra conclusão da pesquisa é que grupos formados apenas por machos tendem a se organizar em papéis complementares e mais competitivos, enquanto as fêmeas adotam comportamentos mais homogêneos e cooperativos. "Alguns machos apertam a alavanca e buscam a comida, e outros permanecem ao lado de onde o alimento cai e não ‘trabalham'”, exemplifica Phippe.  As trajetórias comportamentais se ajustam e se estabilizam, mas esse equilíbrio pode ser rompido, diz, se três animais “exploradores”, por exemplo, forem colocados juntos na mesma gaiola. “Isso vai gerar instabilidade, porque obviamente alguém precisa trabalhar para obter comida.”  Diferentes configurações foram testadas. “Assim, podemos ver que a divisão dos papéis depende da história, do ambiente e de com quem estamos no grupo. Não é algo pré‑determinado ou pré‑definido.”  Os pesquisadores também realizaram experimentos neurofisiológicos. Eles aumentaram a atividade dopaminérgica no cérebro dos machos antes de introduzi‑los na gaiola e observaram que eles se tornavam mais cooperativos e menos exploradores na obtenção de alimento, comportamento similar ao das fêmeas.  Essas conclusões podem ser aplicadas ao mundo humano? “Não podemos transpor diretamente esses resultados para os seres humanos, porque há aspectos muito mais complexos em jogo. Mas existem algumas regras fundamentais semelhantes", observa o cientista. "Um grupo não pode ter vários líderes. Se há quatro líderes potenciais, apenas um acabará ocupando essa posição — não necessariamente o mais competente. Pode ser por acaso ou em função das circunstâncias. Esses elementos são semelhantes entre humanos e camundongos: são dinâmicos.”

Dans l'après-midi, alors qu'elle s'apprête à déjeuner, Félix Faure l'appelle en personne. Marguerite écrira dans ses Mémoires : « Il faut que je vous vois à tout prix, me dit-il ; j'ai à vous remettre quelque chose et je ne me sens pas très bien. Il s'arrêta, comme hors d'haleine et continua : Puisque vous pouvez poser pour Bonnat, vous pouvez bien me consacrer quelques minutes. Sa voix était changée. Il me dit encore : Cette Affaire me tue (il parle de l'affaire Dreyfus) … J'ai plus d'ennemis que jamais, et pendant votre absence, j'ai peut-être trop bien vécu. Vous viendrez cet après-midi sans faute, n'est-ce pas ? Il a semblé hésiter, et finalement a répété : venez cet après-midi, je vous en supplie. » Quelques heures plus tard, le président meurt dans les bras de sa maîtresse. Welcome to the Choosing Wisely Campaign series! This is the fifth and final episode of our 5-part series exploring the ABIM Foundation's Choosing Wisely Lists. This campaign aims to promote conversations between clinicians and patients to avoid unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and procedures. Our last case-based episode focuses on a school-aged male presenting with new-onset enuresis. After a discussion of the differential diagnosis and evidence-based evaluation strategies, we apply recommendations from multiple AAP Choosing Wisely lists to create a care plan that is safe, resource-conscious, and child-centered. Throughout this episode, we'll highlight how ethical care principles—beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice—guide high-value decision-making and help us avoid unnecessary imaging, laboratory studies, and interventions that add cost without improving outcomes. This familiar case in pediatrics is worthy of a rewind to relisten to a throwback episode that will reinforce your skills and emphasize the clinical diagnosis and management without added diagnostics, referrals, or medications.  This case closes out our series on Choosing Wisely in Pediatrics, but the principles we've explored should continue to inform your practice every day. Hugh Bonneville is one of the most familiar faces on British TV and film. The first account of Jewish children's flight from Nazi Germany to France—and their subsequent escape to America from the Vichy regime At the eve of the Second World War, an estimated 1.6 million Jewish children lived in Nazi-occupied Europe. While 10,000 of them escaped to Britain in the Kindertransport, only some 500 found a new home in France. Here they attempted to begin again—but their refuge would all too soon become a trap.For the first time, Laura Hobson Faure brings to life the experiences of these children, and the Jewish and non-Jewish organizations who helped them. Drawing on survivors' testimonies as well as children's diaries, letters, drawings, songs, and poems, Who Will Rescue Us?: The Story of the Jewish Children who Fled to France and America During the Holocaust (Yale UP, 2025) re-creates their complex journeys, including how some of them eventually found safety in America.Hobson Faure paints a moving portrait of these children and their escape, uncovering their agency in the flight from Nazism—and knits together the network of the many who aided them along the way. Laura Hobson Faure is professor of modern history and chair of Modern Jewish History at Université Paris 1-Panthéon-Sorbonne. She's an expert on French-American Jewish history and the author of The “Jewish Marshall Plan”: The American Jewish Presence in Post-Holocaust France. Geraldine Gudefin is a modern Jewish historian researching Jewish migrations, family life, and legal pluralism. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Asian Legal Studies at the National University of Singapore, and is completing a book titled An Impossible Divorce?
