In 1995, Kenneth Branagh - between the giant projects of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and his film version of Hamlet - made an utterly charming low budget comedy called In The Bleak Midwinter. He paid for the film himself, bringing together a bunch of actors to tell the story of, well, a bunch of actors. A company who happened to be putting on a Christmas Eve performance of Hamlet. In December 2023, after years of trying, we managed to bring them all together for a special screening of the film. And what you're going to hear in this podcast episode is the conversation afterwards. Bear in mind that they'd all sat and watched the film collectively for the first time in over 25 years just before this conversation took place! The evening was raising funds for Centrepoint, of which you can find more here: https://centrepoint.org.uk/support-us/donate?utm_source=jaagoogleads&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=csarppc23&utm_content=&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4Y-sBhC6ARIsAGXF1g6ofP7eioHgWYRsjB-cDrmSTNDzeegNsuExmtsqt6Ot4jVhAO_4DL4aAipxEALw_wcB Hosted on Acast. Here is a personal Christmas story that inspired me to always try to give back. When our family was struggling, several generous gifts were given to us which inspired my husband and I to give as much as we could when we were able. 'What can I give Him,Poor as I am?-If I were a ShepherdI would bring a lamb;If I were a Wise ManI would do my part,-Yet what I can I give Him,-Give my heart.'"In The Bleak Midwinter"-Christina Rossettihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsH2J8bMZBE

Yesterday afternoon, at around 3:00, just before sunset, a friend and I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to drive up to the most northerly point on the UK mainland, Dunnet Head. It was such a beautiful, crisp, bright day, it seemed a shame not to get out somewhere before dark. Many are under the illusion that John O'Groats is the most northerly point, as it is at the ‘end of the road' from Land's End and host to many charity walks, runs and cycles. However, it is this more dramatic and high moorland a number of miles further that can claim the true title of ‘The Most Northerly Point of Britain'. When we got to the cliff edge, the mist was rising from the sea into the crisp air, creating an atmosphere of mystery and such beauty. It was all I could do to stop attempting to capture it with my small Leica camera. For a while I paused from taking photos to try and drink in as much as I could before my teeth started chattering and it was time to move. My friend and I managed to make it up to the look-out point before the sun dipped behind the horizon and the moon took it's place as star of the late November show. We made it. Just in time. Sometimes it pays to be spontaneous. It was 4:00 and we decided to go to the nearby hotel to have a bite to eat before making our way home to do a little more work. By 5:30 the moon was very high in the sky and there were distant lights of ships out at sea on this clearest of evenings. Then this morning I got up to witness the first real frost of the season - a result of yesterday's cloudless advent skies. I woke later than I would have liked to see the sun casting its light on the frosty landscape, but I slipped into my warmer clothes and boots anyway, and trekked out to catch the last of the light before the sky was covered in a blanket of cloud. The early part of the day felt fresh and still. I managed to alert a group of lapwings as I came tromping down to the beach through the frosty grass. They immediately flew off in their usual erratic group flight patterns, out over the bay. The ducks were the next to take note of my presence and quacked away in a noisy flutter. Aside from the birds, and the steady movement of the incoming tide, it was as though the seaside was waiting with baited breath. For what, I don't know, though I suddenly became aware that today is the first day of Advent - a time of anticipation and hope. What are we waiting for? ... Well, that's the cloud coming in.... Time to head back home for a coffee. As I now sit in my chair, writing, and drinking my coffee, there seems no better way to finish than with the following advent poem by Christina Rossetti, 'Having devout faith, Rossetti composed a great number of poems that celebrated the season including amongst others In The Bleak Midwinter, which we now know as a popular Christmas carol. This selection is one of several verses she wrote about the period of Advent. The themes of watching and waiting are revealed to have two meanings, as not only does it relate to the darkness of the long nights at this time of year, making things in the horizon difficult to be aware of, but also as Advent is viewed as a time to recognise the coming of Christ once more.' Lisa Spurgin, The Reader Advent This Advent moon shines cold and clear, These Advent nights are long; Our lamps have burned year after year, And still their flame is strong. “Watchman, what of the night?” we cry, Heart-sick with hope deferred: “No speaking signs are in the sky,” Is still the watchman's word... www.moniquesliedrecht.com

An idea popped into my head the other day, upon reading an email by a composer, Brian Field. He had done a version of "In The Bleak Midwinter" but called it by Christina Rossetti's actual poem name, "A Christmas Carol" and it was quite nice, but the divisis and various other aspects of the piece, also considering the rushed time frame made it difficult to spring upon my volunteer choir at my Lutheran church job with enough time. SO----voila! I have a podcast which is just recorded performances, and great music for the sake of great music, so why don't I do it on that? So I did. Additionally I figured, if I was going out of my way to do this recently composed piece and it was difficult, why don't I juxtapose this with other ridiculously hard Christmas pieces and recently written works? Helen Mark visits the Cotswold village of Cranham and its surroundings: countryside that was home to the composer Gustav Holst, and now features a walking trail named after him. Holst grew up among these gently rolling hills, and created several of his works – including the Cotswolds Symphony and his classic arrangement of In The Bleak Midwinter – thanks to inspiration gleaned from his years in the area. Exploring his old haunts, visiting the church where he had his first job as organist and treading the same hills where Holst used to practice his trombone, Helen discovers how the landscape influenced the composer; and how his own influence lingers on in the area today. Produced in Bristol by Lucy Taylor.

ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for December 1, 2019* * *Dear Folks -We have picked two additional times to show the documentary film “American Heretics.” In order to publicize it as widely as possible we have scheduled this for next week and not this one. The dates and times are Tuesday, December the 10th at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in J204, which is upstairs in the Jones Building. This coming week in Ordinary Life Chris Newlin will be presenting a program -Moral Failings: Why Religion and Politics Are Tearing Us Apart.I heard Chris present this program recently and was so impressed I asked him if he could come and present it to Ordinary Life. I promise you it is most valuable and educational to hear.Holly and I will co-teach again on December 22. Our topic is “Holding Hands in the Dark.” It was inspired by, among other things, one of my favorite Christmas carols - “In The Bleak Midwinter.”The Ordinary Life Christmas party is Friday, December 20. Details on the Ordinary Life website. In the talks being offered in Ordinary Life I am being guided by the documents “Reclaiming Jesus” and “Charter for Compassion.” You can find both of these on the Ordinary Life website. I chose this week as a time to offer my understanding of a phrase that I think is important if people are going to use Jesus and his teachings as a guide to navigate these prickly times. What does it mean to be “in Christ”?In my opinion the church’s obsession with cosmological dualism and individual salvation are offensive in the face of the issues that are pressing down upon us. What we are learning from evolutionary cosmology is about paradox and harmony. A favorite line of mine from the poet Basho is, “Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. See what they sought. Your experiential identity of who you are in Sacred Mystery is all that matters. I use the metaphor of entering a river as a way to think about what it might mean to take another and deeper step into the sacred. I called the talk -Shall We Gather At The River? That is a very brief summary of the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life. As is often the case, I think the audio version is better than the text from which I spoke. You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, and listen to the audio of the talk using the links below. If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.Be well and much love,Bill KerleyIn order to read or download the text of the talk, click here.In order to view or download the presentation slides, click here.In order to listen to or download the audio version of the talk, use the link below.

ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life* * *Summary for November 24, 2019* * *Dear Folks -Sometime after Thanksgiving we will schedule two additional showings of the film “American Heretics.” I will announce those times this coming Sunday when we meet. These times will also be included in the e-mail that goes out after next Ordinary Life. There is no written text for the class that Holly Hudley and I co-taught this week. I urge you to listen to the audio version of the talk. Also, I am grateful to Tim Leatherwood for posting the audio version of the dialogue between Matt Russell and me about the film. I know that was live-streamed and am assuming this week’s audio version will also be on the website.Holly and I gave the talk we gave this title -Choosing - A Better Way to LiveBetween being stimulated by some event or some person and the time we make a response there is a moment where we have the opportunity to choose the wisest and most useful way to respond. Our culture seems more and more reactive and to encourage such behavior. Not helpful.I read the first part of the “Reclaiming Jesus” document about how racism in its various forms is a growing issue in our culture. This is what both Holly and I attempted to respond to. One of the things I did was show a brief clip of Jane Elliott asking people a stunning question. It takes less than a minute to watch. Click here. Holly spoke about liberation theology and the issue of reparations. She went into the etymology of the word and also talked about the differences between equality, equity and liberation. She showed a video of a starling murmuration as a metaphor for social change. It too is stunning. Click here to see it.I encourage you to listen to the audio and view the presentation slides as well. All available using the links below. On December 8 Chris Newlin will be presenting a program - Moral Failings: Why Religion and Politics Are Tearing Us Apart.
