After a fairly sedentary lifestyle of smoking and very little exercise, at the age of 40, Mark Symes began running. Soon realising that he possessed an ability to run fast, he focussed on the track, and eventually found himself competing in both European and World Masters Championships in the often turbulent 800 and 1500 metre finals. I sat down with Mark at his home in Southern England, to discuss his journey from 40 to now and how great running in later life is something that we can all aspire to. We'd like to bring you another story from the Lands End to John O'Groats saga. On 16th July 2020, a female runner staggered through windy conditions towards a single white pole, marking the end of her journey. She had just run the length of Britain and in doing so broke the Lands End to John O'Groats female world record. A few months into her recovery from this mammoth feat, I was put in touch with her, and she agreed to tell me about what had led her to that moment. VIDEO: https://youtu.be/6DOncIeJ7mM On April 21 1980, Rosie Ruiz was awarded first place female at the Boston Marathon. 8 days later, she was stripped of that title after it was declared that she had cheated, and in fact had only run the final mile of the race. 40 years later, I wanted to understand how and why Rosie had done this. Dan's time: 9 Days 21 hours In May 2002, the John O'Groats to Lands End record was taken apart, by a man named Andi Rivett. But 18 years later, one man has some questions about this extraordinary feat. After an introduction from previous guest and ultra runner Chris Finill, Harry meets with Will Cockerell. Will is a wonderful marathon runner, journalist and author of the book 'The 50 Greatest Marathons of All Time' and a huge authority on the sport. Will gives a detailed analysis of the 2002 record and why he holds some doubt over its validity. We reached out to Andi RIvett and Ivor Lloyd for comment, but heard nothing back.
