After a fairly sedentary lifestyle of smoking and very little exercise, at the age of 40, Mark Symes began running. Soon realising that he possessed an ability to run fast, he focussed on the track, and eventually found himself competing in both European and World Masters Championships in the often turbulent 800 and 1500 metre finals. I sat down with Mark at his home in Southern England, to discuss his journey from 40 to now and how great running in later life is something that we can all aspire to. Episode one of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast aired sixteen months ago amidst the dark days of COVID. Initially, it was a way to extend conversations I'd begun in my book How to be a Buddhist Millionaire: 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world. A Buddhist Millionaire is the name I give to someone who dares to make an abundant living doing work they love. Episode one soon gave way to episodes two, three, four… Before we knew it, we had aired an entire season. Now here we are at the conclusion of season three. I am delighted to share today's guest with you all. I love all my guests, but none more so than Regis Lima. We met on the Jit Jitsu mats at the World Masters Championships in Vegas. We have been pen pals ever since. Regis is an inspiration like no other. He is the epitome of Buddhist Millionaire-ship, an utter gentleman and a gift to the world. If you have ever doubted yourself or thought your dreams were too outlandish and that you were too old to chase them, then this episode is defiantly (no, not a spelling mistake) for you. Please take the time to like, comment and share this episode with someone you think might benefit. We need your help spreading the 'Buddhist Millionaire' word. See you in season four. Lots of love. Lessons from Montreal. It has been a great time at the World Masters Championships. See what I have learnt and what you can actually take away from my trip here with my lifters.
British diver Barbara Heathfield first started diving at her high school at age 11 and has returned to the sport she loves after a break of 20 years. Now aged 60 she is taking on the world having competed in numerous National and International Masters competitions. Barbara says: “I thought I would give it a go again, so I joined a club and started to re learn some dives. I must say it was much harder than I remembered it as a child. It wasn’t long before I became hooked again, and needless to say, one by one my sons stopped diving but I carried on. I had forgotten quite how nerve wracking it could be.” Barbara has won the British Masters Championships many times in her age group, and been placed in the top three in the European Championships. She was a gold medalist in the platform synchro event at the 2010 World Masters in Gothenburg, the 3m Synchro and Platform Synchro in Riccione in 2014 and the Mixed 3m Synchro in Budapest in 2018. Barbara is still aiming for the top three in an individual event in the World Masters. Later this year she will be competing at the Croatia Masters Championships in Rijeka, and the World Masters Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Simon and Nathan get their teeth into a possible future for Zwift – in the form of Virtual Reality. With the Oculus Rift headset becoming more available and with Zwift already VR-capable, could this deeply immersive technology catch on in the fitness arena? Shane gives his first reactions to using the headset with Zwift and Simon and Nathan discuss some of the more obvious downsides as well as looking at the possibilities of this exciting technology. Some think the superb Zwift Academy scheme – which aims to use the platform to identify a potential professional female rider – has been flying a little under the radar. Not the hundreds of women who’ve been taking part in the rigorous programme of training over the summer, but perhaps this scheme isn’t as well known in the wider Zwift community as it might be. The podcast has three interviews with graduates of the Academy. Leah Thorvilson, Rachel Elliot and Bel Flint have all made it through to the final 12 riders – hear how they reacted to getting the news. Andrew Tilin is a veteran cyclist, an ex-racer and a high profile cycling journalist and author. He’s just completed an assignment investigating the appeal of Zwift for Outside magazine. Simon interviews him to discover more about his journey from cynic to convert. Scottie Weiss is a real Zwift veteran – he’s been on the platform from day one and the ex-professional rider is as used to showing the field a clean pair of heels as he is helping new Zwifters and leading Group Rides. This summer Scottie achieved two magnificent wins at the World Masters Championships in Austria. Simon talks to Scottie about the role Zwift played. And we have a little more from the sports tech guru Ray Maker, aka D C Rainmaker, who Simon spent some time with at Eurobike. This episode puts Ray on the spot and asks him to identify his favoured trainer at various price points.Ray also raises a tricky issue for US buyers – should they consider buying a trainer from European retailers who sometimes offer great deals and free shipping? “All good” says Ray, “until something goes wrong.”
