Join Matt Willis & Francesca Chiorando as they talk about 9 years of The OCR World Championships, as we come up to the 10th Edition in 2024. Matt Willis, a pro athlete and OCR Media personality, is one of the very few people (if not only) to have run not only every single OCRWC event, but also all of the NorAm Championships. They talk over each year, the highs and lows, each location, and why OCRWC is the premium championship event out there.
They've been around for ten years now, since the very first OCR World Championships, supporting our event, athletes, and even bigger, supporting vulnerable children around the world. OCR Gives Back is an amazing organization that supports children in need through play and sport. Steve spoke to us to talk more about what they do and how we can all get involved. In the year where there are two OCRWCs I figured it would be great to hear from someone who went to compete in both of them! Ian Hosek has been a prominent member of USAOCR for a while now and he made the trip over to Belgium to compete in the first FISO OCR World Championships. More recently he competed in Spartan Race's OCRWC (man that's going to take some adjusting to) and took 2nd in the 3K, 2nd in the 15K, his men's relay team took 1st, and his coed team also took 1st! The 2023 World Obstacle/UIPM OCR Championships took place in Genk, Belgium, from September 14th to 17th. Just a few weeks later, from October 5th to 8th, the 2023 OCR World Championships, organized by Adventurey/Spartan Race, unfolded in Mammoth Lakes, CA, USA. Tune in as Seb David and Ian Hosek provide a detailed comparison of these two high-profile OCR events, highlighting the differences in course design, obstacles, and overall competition. They also touch upon the historical context, comparing the 2023 championships to previous editions and the broader evolution of OCR as a sport. This year may have had FISO's first OCR World Championships but we still love Adventurey's weekend long OCRWC event as well! The past couple of years we have had an episode before the event as a way to build up more anticipation for it, 2021 we had Veejay Jones on the show before event weekend, and last year we had Fran Chiorando on! Admittedly, we were unsure how the first FISO OCR Championships would go after their history of not being able to put on a world championship event for years. That being said the number of incredible athletes that showed up to Belgium to compete made this an incredible World Championship event! When looking through the results Gian Maria Savani stood out as both the winner of the short course, runner up of the standard course, and an athlete that we didn't know as much about. We reached out to have him on the show to hear more about him and were thrilled to have him as this week's guest! We discussed how he got into obstacle course racing, which athletes he looks up to, the importance of discipline, and how his races went. We also discuss some shortcomings of this event such as the overly complicated rule book, the continued lack of communication with prize money, there not being any drug testing, and Be sure to follow Gian on Instagram and cheer him on as he takes on future events, like the upcoming Italian OCR Championship finals! 0:00 – 2:43 – Intro 2:43 – 15:58 – Quick News 15:58 – 16:32 – Content Preface 16:32 - 1:15:14 - Gian Maria Savani Interview 1:15:14 - End – Outro Next episode we plan to have someone on the show to build anticipation for Adventurey ... uh Spartan's OCRWC! ____ News Stories: Nicole Mericle Competing to Join USA Ice Climbing Team Nick Gagnon Finished Appalacian Trail Spartan Race Acquires OCRWC City Challenge Race Removed as Qualifier for OCRWC Spartan Athletes Are Still Waiting to Get Paid Paris 2024 is First Olympics to Have Equal Number of Men and Women The Hybrid Letter Tour de Donut Derti Development Facility is Closed Race Ready Obstacles Putting on The Midwest OCR 2024 Northeast Ultra Cup Viking Obstacle Race's Special Event for Bonefrogs Viking's Trick or Treat Obstacle/Night Run Event (Code: "ORA" for 20% off and chance for 2nd free entry drawn Oct 2nd) Spartan Seattle Beast, Ultra, Super, and Sprint Results Spartan Angel's Stadium Podiums FISO 100 Meter Podiums? He's worked for Spartan Race, Terrain Race, Bonefrog, and more over the years so we start off briefly touching on his history in OCR. For more of an in depth discussion though we recommend OCRWC Podcast's episode with him here! You see, I believe that it is through difficult situations and great pain that the human spirit grows and character is developed. And my story is a testament to this.I started in the fitness industry when I was only 18 years old, and I knew that it was where I belonged. I had always been into fitness and enjoyed being active throughout my whole childhood. I was involved in Martial Arts, Wrestling and Football throughout high school and was generally a very physical person.I have been in the field for 26+ years and plan to stay here for many more. While I always enjoyed my work and was successful with it, I was not as passionate then as I am now. The passion didn't come until much later. The passion came through the most painful loss I have ever experienced…the death of my mother. It was my mother's life: her sacrifices, support and guidance that made me the man I am today. It was her death that birthed a passion in me. After I lost my mother, I had a renewed sense of purpose; I vowed that I would make her proud. It was during this painful season that I realized that I was put here to help others, to guide others to be their best selves, and to continue striving to be my best too.My parents were always an anchor for me. They raised my siblings and I to be the best we could be, instilling a deep faith and the principles of Respect, Love and Discipline; principles that I apply to everything I do even to this day. After my mother's death, my father became a beacon for me. He demonstrated a great strength even through great tragedy. He inspires me to push through the pain and grow stronger through difficult situations.Since then, I redefined my purpose. I became more passionate about helping others to reach their goals, but even more I longed to help them evolve into their best selves. I work with clients to help them move forward towards their future instead of dwelling on the past. One of my favorite analogies of this evolution is when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. After the butterfly emerges from the cocoon, he never goes back to being a caterpillar. Once you start living as your true self and growing into your best self, you don't go back to who you used to be.Since this awakening, my path has led me towards many great career opportunities. I have worked as a Spartan SGX trainer and had the incredible honor of giving motivational speeches at Spartan and Battlefrog events along with at the OCR World Championships. I have spoken to groups of first responders and to youth at schools. When I speak, I do not write a script, I speak from the heart and in the moment. My hope with each motivational speech is that I connect to the hearts of the audience, that they will be able to feel my energy and passion and that it will ignite something inside of them too! I view every speaking opportunity as an honor and an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. As far as training goes, I have developed my own unique style that represents who I am as a fitness coach. I have built the foundation for my training on my years of experience with various approaches. My training sessions are all about functional movement, but I am constantly changing things up to keep my clients interested and challenged. This style is not for everyone, but those who want to be pushed and who want to become mentally tough as well as physically strong love my combination of movements and motivation.Ultimately it has been the painful situations in my life that have grown me the most. It is because of my loss and my struggles that I have become who I am today.Who am I?I am confident.I am humble.I am hungry.I am eager.I am ambitious.I am hard-working.I am willing to do what it takes.I am Coach Pain.MY EXPERIENCEI have over 26 years of experience in the fitness industry and as a motivational speaker. Some of my professional accomplishments include: Motivational Speaker Fitness Coach Nutrition Specialist NPC 2011 Midwest Ironman Physique American Ninja Warrior Participant – 2011, 2012 Jeet Kune Do & Wrestling Background (12 years) Naval Special Warface Orientation Course Instructor Announcer and Motivational Speaker For Spartan Race and BattleFrong Series
Scottie Gillenwater has run hundreds of Obstacle Course Races over the last 4 years. He competes in the "Elite" and "Age Group" divisions at Spartan, Conquer the Gauntlet, and Savage Races all over the country. In 2020, right before the Covid-19 outbreak, he qualified to go to the OCR World Championships in Greece. He shares his love of the OCR culture, his mindset before a race and how to run your best race. Scottie's Post at one year sober: Decided to post this on a #medalmonday....I've discussed this photo already, but figured I'd do it here. This photo means a lot to me in so many ways. I have looked at this everyday since I took it and cant believe I've been running OCR for barely 9 months, hit that podium in 6 months, and I've podiumed in my last 4 out of 5 races. Everyone of those medals represents another goal I achieved in finishing that race. It also is a symbol of how hard I've work on myself to stay off Alcohol....its been 13 months since I stopped drinking. I believe OCR has helped me with that like no other factor other then myself. I dont drink, cuz I have to train....I dont party late Friday and Saturday anymore as I usually have a race the next day. This has helped me in so many other factors in my life..work, relationships, and just overall mental health. Obstacle course racing has given me goals and things to strive for. I'm very happy I found this sport, and so glad the community has embraced me like it has.

As always the Underground SGX Show is providing you training tips and advice to improve your next Spartan Race. In this episode, discover a cool calculator for determining your training pace for your runs. Instead of just randomly going for a run, this calculator tells you the exact pace you should be hitting, based on the specific training adaptation you are trying to improve. We also discuss lactate threshold. Discover what it is and why you need to know about it. Plus we review some of the research on lactate threshold training and how you can improve it if you want to be a better racer. And in our SGX Coach's interview I have on Coach Stephanie Lozon. Coach Lozon is a former RN turned trainer and OCR coach. She works with many Masters athletes helping them prep for racing and helping them stay injury free. Coach Lozon has helped her clients prep at the OCR World Championships maximizing performance and longevity. In this episode she discusses how she helps her seasoned athletes stay fresh and healthy for the long haul. She give great tips on how you can train for the elements. And she provides a great template to help you divide your training plan into different phases to help you peak for your most important races. We even touch on the importance of the deload and how so many are increasing their injuries and decreasing their performance, but not implementing this crucial component.
