As the Olympic and Paralympic summer comes to an end, many of us will be thinking what next? The UK is already preparing to host the Women's Rugby World Cup next year, the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham in 2026 and hopefully the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow! But like Paris 2024, none of these will take place without a huge number of volunteers, or ambassadors, of the event. Liz Stainthorpe is an event volunteer and manager & booking agent of The Games Maker Choir and in this special episode of Great British Bosses, we hear about the important role volunteers play in sport presentation, how if managed correctly, they could add further value to events, how to get involved and sign up the Choir for Sport for future Games! This week Dr Louise is joined by sprinter Desirèe Henry who is representing Team GB at the Paris Olympics this year. Desirèe is no stranger to the Olympics – she was one of seven young athletes who lit the Olympic caldron at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Games, plus she took home a bronze medal in the 4 X 100m relay at the 2016 Rio Games. And she'll be heading to Paris on a high after being part of Team GB's gold medal-winning women's 4x100m relay team at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in June. Desirèe talks about the challenges of competing throughout the menstrual cycle and coping with heavy periods, plus the importance of talking openly about these issues, maintaining a healthy weight and body positivity. Finally, Desirèe shares three tips to help you lead a happier and healthier life: Set one goal every day. It doesn't have to be anything big, it could be drinking water or having a piece of fruit every day, but it's something that will add up over the week and benefit your lifestyle in a positive way. Try to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle. It could be watching a YouTube yoga video or anything that just allows your body to move, that increases blood flow around the body and helps you get in some extra stretching. Check in on other people more often. Just find out how they are and show them that somebody cares – you'll be appreciated. You can follow Desirèe on Instagram @desiree_lh Click here to find out more about Newson Health

It's Friday, June 21st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Armenian Christian man received 10-year prison sentence in Iran After losing a court appeal in early June, Armenian Hakop Gochymayan received a 10-year prison sentence for allegedly participating in Christian activities in Iran, reports International Christian Concern. Gochymayan and his wife, Elisa, who is of Iranian descent and has family in Iran, were detained near Tehran in August 2023. In a report from Barnabas Aid, the couple was “placed in solitary confinement and subjected to intense psychological torture.” Hebrews 13:3 says, “Don't forget those who are in prison. Remember them as though you were in prison with them. And don't forget those who are suffering. Remember them as though you were suffering with them.” Authorities in Pardis, Iran, arrested the couple, who were in the country visiting friends and family as they dined at an acquaintance's home. Reportedly, the Armenian man had several copies of the New Testament, written in the Persian language of Farsi, and had attended multiple churches during his stay. In an attempt to dissuade conversions, it is illegal in Iran to speak to non-Christians about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to have Bibles written in Farsi, which is the nation's official language. According to Open Doors, Iran is the ninth most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un sign pact in China's shadow Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a new pact Wednesday that includes a pledge of mutual defense if either is attacked, reports NBC News. The agreement was sealed at a summit in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, during a rare visit by Putin to the reclusive nuclear-armed state as both countries face growing confrontations with the West. The BBC noted that the real power in the region was not in Pyongyang, nor did it want to be. Putin and Kim were bonding on China's doorstep. While North Korean artillery would be a shot in the arm for Putin's war effort, swapping missile technology for it would not exactly be a great deal. And Putin might realize it's not worth annoying China, which buys Russian oil and gas, and remains a crucial ally in a world that has isolated him. Pyongyang needs China even more. It's the only other country Kim Jong Un visits. Anywhere between a quarter to a half of North Korea's oil comes from Russia, but at least 80% of its business is with China. Megachurch pastor Robert Morris resigns over moral failure Megachurch pastor Robert Morris, the 62-year-old founder of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, resigned after Cindy Clemishire accused him of sexually abusing her over multiple years in the 1980s beginning when she was 12, reports The Christian Post. Morris had admitted that he had engaged in "inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady" while he was a pastor at another church in his early 20s. But he did not name his accuser or disclose her age at the time the abuse began. 1 Timothy 3:2 and 7 says, “Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach. … He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.” In the announcement of Morris' resignation, Gateway Church elders said they have retained the law firm of Haynes & Boone, LLP, to "conduct an independent, thorough, and professional review of the report of past abuse to ensure we have a complete understanding of the events from 1982-1987." In their statement, the elders wrote, “Regretfully, prior to Friday, June 14, the elders did not have all the facts of the inappropriate relationship between Morris and the victim, including her age at the time and the length of the abuse. The elders' prior understanding was that Morris's extramarital relationship, which he had discussed many times throughout his ministry, was with ‘a young lady' and not abuse of a 12-year-old child.” However, Cindy Clemishire claims that in 2007 “at least one elder had specific notice that I was sexually abused beginning when I was 12 years old.” One ripple effect is that the Texas-based Daystar Television Network, one of the largest Christian television networks in the world, has removed all programming featuring Robert Morris. German shot put athlete gives glory to God German athlete Yemisi Ogunleye won the bronze medal in the shot put competition at the European Athletics Championships in Rome with a throw of 61 feet, reports Evangelical Focus. After winning the silver medal at the World Championships in Glasgow in March 2024, she has become one of the leading names in her discipline. After competing, she said, “I gave it my all.” In addition to her sporting career, the athlete also openly talks about her Christian faith and participates in a Gospel choir. On social media she wrote, “Thank you for the many prayers. Is God good? All the time!” Psalm 29:2 says, “Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness.” 8 Worldview listeners donated $3,390 And finally, toward our $63,000 goal by this Saturday, June 22nd – the three-week mark of our month-long fundraiser, 8 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate to help fund our 6-member team for another fiscal year. We appreciate Chad in Moriarty, New Mexico who pledged $20/month for 12 months for a gift of $240 as well as Richard in Wyoming, Delaware, Michael in Houston, Texas, and Bill in Thibodaux, Louisiana – each of whom pledged $25/month for 12 months for a gift of $300 each. And we're grateful to God for Bill in Castle Rock, Colorado who gave $1,000 as well as a husband and wife in Louisiana who donated $1,200. Those 8 donors gave $3,390. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (sound effect of drum roll) $51,845.16 (audience cheering) Toward this Saturday's goal of $63,000, we need to raise $11,154.84. That means we need to need 5 people to pledge $100 per month for 12 months, 4 people to pledge $50 per month for 12 months, and 8 people to pledge $25/month for 12 months. It's been a week of history for Ireland at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. Ireland came away with a record haul of four medals - two gold and two silver. Looking back on the week of glory, and speaking to all the athletes involved, here's Will Downing:
Zuzana Čaputová, the first female President of the Slovak Republic, took office on 15 June 2019. Her five-year tenure has been marked by significant political changes, tackling difficult challenges and achieving several successes. The coalition is preparing several changes, which it has workingly called the Lex assassination. They are meant to respond to the attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico in mid-May this year when he was shot four times.Gabriela Gajanová won the silver medal at the European Athletics Championships. She won the seventh medal for Slovakia at the continental championships in the era of independence. This podcast used a short sample from youtube.com/APArchive, youtube.com/Runningismyhobby, and prezident.sk"The Slovak Snapshots" podcast is made by Zorislav Poljak.
Cecil Johnston, Tallaght AC coach and Olympian & former European Champion, David Gillick join Anton to reflect on Ireland's recent European Athletics Championships success.
The world has gone election-crazy, but fortunately Hannah and Jen have mostly swerved it in this week's Bush Telegraph. There's some real human hardship to talk about, beyond poor ickle Rishi's lack of Sky TV, as well as some mental imagery you're likely never to forget around microplastics and human testicle samples. In sport, we're looking at the European Athletics Championships, as well as saying a firm “fuck this shit” to the decision makers at Thornaby FC. Learn more about your ad choices. At the 2024 European Athletics Championships, we arguably saw the greatest Triple Jump competition in history. Jordan Diaz Fortun of Spain and Pedro Pichardo of Portugal went jump for jump fighting until the 6th round for the Gold Medal. Diaz Fortun came out on top with a mark of 18.18m, moving him to no.3 on the all-time list. Pichardo jumped 18.04m, which was just the 2nd time in history someone jumped 18m and did not win a competition. With the dust still settling on a legendary competition out in Rome, the question remains, was this the greatest triple jump competition in history? Today, I breakdown the European Championship Triple Jump final round by round, as well as take a look back at the history of the triple jump and some other high quality competitions we have seen over the past few decades. Barr was the fastest of the opening round competitors in a new system where every qualifying place is decided by times instead of a high finish. The relay gold medallist is happy to get things moving, but as he has been telling Will Downing, he is not a fan of the new format...
There's been a lifetime best for Kelly McGrory in the womens' 400 metres hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. She clocked 57-point-10 seconds in her heat and was eliminated in 19th overall, but the Tir Chonaill AC athlete is still very satisfied.

Sweden's Perseus Karlstrom, coached in Cork by former world champion Rob Heffernan, won the men's 20k walk by fighting off Spain's Paul McGrath, whose grandparents are Irish. Speaking to Will Downing, Karlstrom says Ireland can claim more than a small piece of his gold medal.

Síofra Cléirigh-Buttner réidh do dhúshlan na hEorpa. The European Athletics Championships will be held in Poland next week. Reachtálfar Craobhacha Lúthchleasaíochta na hEorpa sa Phólainn an tseachtain seo chugainn. Among the athletes taking part will be Síofra Clerk Búttner. I measc na lúthchleasaithe a bheidh ag glacadh páirte ann beidh Síofra Cléirigh Búttner. A young Dublin woman, who is settling in Boston, is looking forward to the challenge. Tá bean óg Bhleá Cliath, atá ag cur futhú i mBoston, ag tnúth go mór leis an dúshlán. She has been a busy week for the Irish Buttner's Clerk, since breaking the national record in the 800 meter race, finishing in second place at Fayetteville in American Arkansas, in a time of 2:00:58 - fourth fastest time passed by a European athlete this year. Tá seachtain thar a bheith gnóthach curtha di aici ag Síofra Cléirigh Buttner na hÉireann, ó sháraigh sí an curiarracht náisiúnta sa rás 800 méadar, agus í ag críochnú sa dara hÁit i Fayetteville in Arkansas Mheiriceá, in am 2:00:58 - an ceathrú am is sciopthaí a rith lúthchleasaí Eorpach i mbliana. A young Dubliner who is currently permanently based in Boston, on the Irish team, which will be competing at next weekend's European Championships, could not be better prepared. Ní fhéadfadh ullmhúchán níos fearr a bheith ag bean óg Bhleá Cliath atá lonnaithe go buan i mBoston faoi láthair, agus í ar fhoireann na hÉireann, a bhéas san iomaíocht ag Craobhach na hEorpa an deireadh seachtaine seo chugainn. She ran with him at the 2017 world championships in London, where she didn't do very well, but the experience stood her in good stead, she says, and after four years of university scholarship she won an athletics scholarship at Villinova University in Phillidelphia, she is now strengthening, developing and flourishing in her craft under the guidance of her coach Mark Coogan, with the professional team of New Balance in Boston. Rith sí leis ag na craobhach domhanda i 2017 i Londain, áit nár éirigh ró-iontach léi, ach sheas an taithí go mór leí deir sí, agus tar éis di ceithre bliana ollscolaíochta a chur di féin ar scoláireacht lúthchleasaíochta in Ollscoil Villinova i Phillidelphia, tá sí anois ag treisiú, ag forbairt is ag bláthú ina ceird faoi threoir a traenálaí Mark Coogan, le foireann ghairmiúl New Balance i mBoston. She is now ready, she says, to make her mark on the big stage. Tá sí réidh anois, a deir sí, a marc a fhágáil ar an stáitse mór.

Elevating American Distance Running: Ben Rosario Ben Rosario is the head coach of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite. His athletes have been wildly successful in recent years, with the most notable being Aliphine Tuliamuk's win at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. His athletes Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor also finished in the top ten of that race, and on the men's side, Scott Fauble, a 2:09 marathoner, came in 12th. In this episode, Coach Claire talks to Ben about the Olympic Marathon Trials, focusing on how well his female athletes did, how HOKA NAZ treats female athletes, especially in light of the Nike Oregon Project, and why he thinks so many female runners are still posting PRs well into their 30s. Ben also shares some great coaching advice, his training philosophy, and his insight into why so many world records have been posted during COVID. At the time of this recording, Ben was preparing for The Marathon Project held on December 20. Coach Claire asks Ben for his predictions and will post the results here in the show notes following the race. Like many coaches, Ben started out as an accomplished runner himself as a member of the Hansons Brooks team and he competed in the Olympic Trials twice before turning to coaching full time. In his six+ years with Northern Arizona Elite, Ben’s athletes have won U.S. National Titles in cross country and on the roads at 10k, the half marathon and the 25k, as well as New Zealand National Titles on the track and the roads. HOKA NAZ Elite athletes have recorded 8 top-10 finishes at World Marathon Majors. The team has been represented at the World Cross Country Championships, the World Half Marathon Championships, and at the World Track and Field Championships. His athletes have also competed at the European Athletics Championships, the Great Edinburgh International XC Meet, the NACAC Cross Country Championships, the NACAC Track Championships, the Pan American Cup Cross Country Meet and the Pan American Games. In 2016, the team produced two sixth-place finishes at the Olympic Trials Marathon and two fourth-place finishes in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, four HOKA NAZ Elite athletes posted top 20 finishes, including three in the top eight in the women’s race led by Aliphine Tuliamuk–the Trials Champion. Questions Ben is asked: 4:19 2020 has been pretty crazy for everyone in the world but specifically for the team that you lead, Northern Arizona Elite. Let's go back in time to February when you were getting ready for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Can you take us back there and recap what you were thinking? 5:10 Atlanta is a pretty tough course with all the hills. Obviously that was not a problem for at least your female athletes. 5:28 Your athlete, Aliphine Tuliamuk, won the women's race and was planning to head to Tokyo when the world shut down. What was that like as her coach? 6:41 I would love to talk to you about Aliphine Tuliamuk’s recent announcement that she is pregnant and due in January. As her coach, I’m sure she came to you and said, “Hey, Ben, this is what I’m going to do.” What was that conversation like? 7:26 How tough was it keeping Aliphine’s pregnancy a secret? 8:33 You are quite experienced in elite mom runners. Several women on your team are moms and are still just killing it. I would love to talk about Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie Bruce. I would love to talk about Stephanie for a minute. She is almost 37 years old and still getting PRs in the 10K. How is that possible? 10:14 It didn’t used to be so long ago that mid-30s was old for a runner but now that’s not the case, and I think maybe it has something to do with belief, too, seeing all these new great examples. 11:06 I want to keep going back to the women because you have been coaching some really great ones obviously, and American women are seeing a resurgence in endurance running. American men maybe not so much. Would you want to talk about that? 12:32 I want to talk to you about how women are treated in this sport. We’ve all heard about the crazy things with the Nike Oregon Project and how Kara Goucher was treated when she was pregnant. I don’t think that it’s going to be the same story with Hoka. I would love to have you share what you could say about how Hoka supports its female athletes. 15:06 I think you’re right that when all that came out about the Oregon Project that we thought as fans, “Oh. This is the way they’re all treated.” But it’s great to hear that that’s not the case. 15:34 Whenever I get a coach on, I love to talk about coaching advice to hopefully help someone who’s listening become a better runner. Do you have different training approaches for the kids who come straight out of college than you do for your veteran elite runners? 17:03 Let’s talk in a little bit more detail about the training advice. Most runners get the advice hard days are hard; easy days are easy. But then you throw in some medium days. I think that’s where a lot of recreational runners trip up is those medium days. Can you talk about those and what they’re for and how you use them? 19:22 You don’t always have to run your hardest, right? 20:11 You're also a fan of high mileage and I want to know what that means to you because as runners we all want to run as much as possible but clearly there’s a point when high is too high. So what is that point? Obviously it’s individual, but how does somebody know what is high for them? Where’s that sweet spot? 22:51 Besides your athletes, this year we've seen so many world-record breaking performances in 2020, which seems counterintuitive since there have been so few races, the world is not normal, and people can’t train the way they usually do. What do you attribute that to? 24:14 I’m sure the cynics would say the number of world-record breaking performances in 2020 are because of the shoes or because there’s not enough drug tests in COVID. What do you say about those kinds of things? 25:25 So you think there should be regulations on running shoes like them being available to the public or there’s a stack height, that kind of stuff; is that what you mean? 27:00 What's next for you and your athletes? How do you predict the running world will change in 2020? 28:29 This will probably air after the Marathon Project this weekend, but I would love to have you handicap it a little bit, tell us who’s all racing and what do you predict? 31:40 How many participants are there for the marathon? Questions I Ask Everyone: 32:17 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give? 33:31 What is the greatest gift running has given you? 33:56 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Ben: “I think what we’re learning is that women can run really well into their mid-to-late 30s, and we’re learning that not only from Steph but Shalane, Des, Kellyn, Molly Huddle; all kinds of women in the US and beyond are showing that in distance running, women keep getting better.” “In general, my goal anyway is to keep people around here for a really long time. So we’re definitely taking a long-term approach and we’re not trying to necessarily throw everything at them right away. We’re trying to slowly add pieces over time, and you see that with the folks who have stayed with us for a long time just getting better and better and better and better, and that’s what we want.” “I think uninterrupted training leads to great performances for anybody at any level.” “The sport has a side to it now that is very technological. And so does golf. And so does swimming. And so does baseball, right? And every sport almost. And like all those other sports, we need to make sure that the playing field is fair.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Hard work. Determination. Discipline. These are what we can learn best from professional athletes. Olympics may be just plain enjoyment for most of us, but for the athletes, it's a serious matter – a huge milestone in their career and a dream come true. Today on The Steven Sully Study Podcast, we get to hear the story of British track and field sprinter Conrad Williams. Discover how he landed a spot on the British team which took part at the 2012 Summer Olympics from just taking part in small county races. It wasn't a level fat to traverse. In this episode also, Conrad gives advice for new and aspiring athletes out there. These can even be useful to entrepreneurs if they want to explore a different perspective on how they should take their journey. KEY TAKEAWAYS From county race to world championship, Conrad went through every step. He trained and improved every single day just to move higher and higher. People can learn a lot from professional athletes. Their determination, discipline, and regard for achieving success is incomparable. Unlike other professions, they don't have rest. They need to be mindful of their health and fitness 24/7 since this will affect the future of their careers. Joining the Olympics was a dream come true. Conrad has sacrificed so much (i.e. social and leisure activities) to invest more time on training to join the national team. And he's grateful his loved ones are supportive of his journey. Conrad is also passionate about helping young athletes develop and get to the next level of their career. He wants to share his knowledge and expertise in sports training all over the world. Advice for those who want to be a successful professional athlete: Be patient and don't compare yourself to anyone. Set realistic goals and after you reach each of them, set your bar higher. BEST MOMENTS “It's not just competing; it's a lifestyle.” “It's a short-lived sport. We have to make sure we deal with our best with the time we have.” “Life is not rehearsal. You only got one shot at it.” “If you lose the spark or the moment which make you an Olympian and an athlete, everything can fall away quickly.” “The relationships become the very best version of you. It's important to have right core group around you.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Muller Anniversary Games The Steven Sulley Podcast: Core Beliefs and Understanding the ‘Why' in Football and Life – Anton Ferdinand | Apple | Omny ABOUT THE GUEST Conrad Williams is a British track and field sprinter who competes in the 400 metres and 4x400 m relay. He has already won 8 senior international medals. Among them were the gold medal for England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the gold medal for Great Britain at the 2014 European Athletics Championships. He was also part of the British team that cam fourth in the men's 4x400 m at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Conrad's Twitter - @cwilliam400 ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should focus on several key areas to be a well-rounded individual. Success should not be just one thing like money, for example, it should also comprise a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made a success in life and also made some cock-ups, I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit of success. I started from leaving school at 16 with very poor school results to pursue a career in plumbing following the directions of my parents that then lead me to a barrister's chamber and then to a sales floor. From here, I established a foothold in the sales market promoting financial products and being a founder of an art agency that has a Soho based art studio. In addition, I have invested into an urban fashion brand and into a wellness tech company, and my latest addition to the business portfolio is a property company that which creates HMO's in Medway, Kent. The diverse range of industries I find myself in has allowed me to create wealth that enables me to be my boss so I can pursue my dreams. As a former boxer and avid sportsman, I find there are similarities between the running of businesses and competing. In my episodes, I will share some of my experiences to explore deeper these connections and how they may bring you success."
