Bella Mackie's debut novel, How to Kill Your Family, sold over one million copies, and now she's back with her second book, What a Way to Go. It's a hilariously dark ‘whodunnit' that centres on the death of an extremely rich yet extremely unpleasant man, Anthony Wistern. In this conversation with Róisín Ingle, Mackie talks about the online sleuths and armchair detectives who inspired one of her main characters and how her relationship with true crime has evolved over the years. We also hear about her 2018 memoir, Jog On, which focuses on running and mental health and she reflects on how that book marked "the beginning of the rest of her life". Later on, Mackie also talks about her quick proposal to her “current husband”, BBC's Greg James, about the upcoming Netflix adaptation of her first novel and about her experience of being stalked by a man she'd never met. In conversation with writer and broadcaster Alexandra Heminsley, Bella will be speaking about her hotly anticipated new novel What A Way To Go, a brilliantly funny and twisty mystery for fans of Succession and true crime. Anthony Wistern is wealthy beyond imagination. Fragrant wife, gaggle of photogenic children, French chateau, Cotswold manor, plethora of mistresses, penchant for cutting moral corners, tick tick tick tick tick tick. Unfortunately for him, he's also dead. Suddenly poised to inherit his fortune, each member of the family falls under suspicion. And that's when the lying starts... If you're still not over Succession, then the family at the heart of Bella Mackie's new novel 'gives the Roy clan a run for its money, with a murderous twist (Sunday Times Style.) Join us in September for a thrilling conversation about dysfunctional families, rich people, and true-crime obsessives. Praise for What A Way To Go 'Very funny… I inhaled it' - JOE LYCETT 'The right side of spiky and the right kind of fun, with huge personality' - ADELE PARKS ‘I loved her first, How to Kill Your Family, and here she seems to have found a rich and poisonous vein. Think a very English Succession, with just as much intrigue, backstabbing, and narcissism' JOJO MOYES ‘Taut, pacy, seamless… a huge pleasure to read' - MARIAN KEYES Bella Mackie's debut novel How to Kill Your Family was a #1 Sunday Times bestseller and spent 47 weeks in the top 10 in paperback. She is the author of the Sunday Times bestselling non-fiction Jog On, and has written for the Guardian, Vogue and Vice. In 2023 she judged the Women's Prize for Fiction and her work has been shortlisted for the British Book Awards. Alexandra Heminsley is a bestselling author, journalist, and broadcaster. My guest today is Bella Mackie. Until her mid-30s Bella was a journalist, then she wrote a book called Jog On and her trajectory changed - dramatically. Ostensibly a book about running, Jog On was actually a soul-baring account of Bella's battle with anxiety, OCD and depression and how, ultimately, running saved her. It was one of a wave of books that blended memoir with motivation and was a big and unexpected hit. Then, a couple of years ago she wrote the brilliantly titled How To Kill Your Family. TikTok fell on it. Cue 47 weeks in the top 10 and a Netflix series. Not jealous at all.  Now she's back with the equally twisted What A Way To Go. In which more highly unlikeable people get their comeuppance. Well, some of them. Truly Bella can come up with ways to kill a loved one you hadn't even dreamed of! Bella joined me to talk about being child-free and building your own roadmap to ageing without kids in the equation. We also discussed her childhood obsession with true crime, how there's not a top trumps of mental health and why she still has a long way to go to fight her way out of the good girl box. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including What A Way To Go by Bella Mackie and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Our first guest of the series is the phenomenally popular author Bella Mackie. Bella's debut novel ‘How To Kill Your Family' was a #1 Sunday Times Bestseller and lined the top 10 book charts for a staggering 47 weeks. It has just been announced that Netflix will adapt the book with Anya Taylor-Joy starring as Grace Bernard. Bella is back with a brand new novel ‘What a Way To Go' which comes out on 12th September. It's a story that indulges Bella's fascination with slapstick murder and the mega rich, something Annie and Bella discuss.Bella is, like her books, funny and raw, in a way that feels so relatable. In this refreshingly honest conversation, Annie and Bella talk about Bella's life living with anxiety disorder and OCD since her childhood and how running and writing about it in her memoir ‘Jog On' have helped her through some of the most challenging times. Bella speaks openly about her short-lived first marriage, her relationship with Greg James (Radio 1's Breakfast host) and the personal growth that is often born out of romantic relationships. They also discuss privilege, not having children and Bella's passionate hatred for wellness. Hope you enjoy! DIFFUS NEWS - Musiknachrichten & Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 29, 2022 33:46

Me A Lesson“](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p095y1m1) . The Sunday Salon with Alice-Azania Jarvis

Today's guest is the absolutely brilliant Bella Mackie, author of the fabulous and funny new novel How To Kill Your Family. You may also know her non-fiction work, particularly her phenomenally successful memoir Jog On, which chronicled how taking up running after her first marriage collapsed helped manage her anxiety. It was a bestseller, and she has become one of the most high-profile and refreshingly down-to-earth voices on mental health around. I loved our conversation, which took in everything from the pomodoro method (she's a fan!) to the research that went into writing her rather bloody book - to the anxiety she experienced in the wake of Jog On's success, having never imagined it would garner so much attention. We spoke before How To Kill Your Family was published, and Bella was really nervous to see how her first piece of fiction was received - well, it's since become a Sunday Times number one bestseller. Quite right too. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did. Buy the book: https://www.waterstones.com/book/how-to-kill-your-family/bella-mackie/9780008365912 Edited by Chelsey Moore

What lessons can we learn from verses from the Quran or examples from the Prophet Muhammed that support us utilising the month of fasting and recitation as a period of healing instead? Ramadan is a unique and spiritual tailor-made prescription from the greatest of healers. It is a two-way treatment programme for those who are in need of nourishing soul food. Do you sometimes sacrifice your health and happiness for work? Are you unsure of why you do it, or what you can do?It’s a surprisingly common trait amongst doctors and other busy professionals to believe that you’re indispensable. In truth, we know that whilst what we do is important, if we don’t look after ourselves and take time out when we’re unwell, we’ll be out of action for much longer. This week Rachel is joined by You Are Not A Frog regular, Nik Kendrew. Last time Nik joined us, we discussed a book that has helped him in his professional life as a GP, trainer and partner as well as his personal life. Nik’s back this week to talk about another brilliant book and to share what insights and learnings he’s gained from it.Between this and Nik’s previous guest appearance on YANAF, he’s had some personal battles to deal with, including an emergency trip to hospital just as he was due to start a shift as duty doctor (yes, the ambulance took him away in front of the waiting patients!).This was a serious moment for Nik, yet whilst he was in Resus, he found himself texting his future appointments, offering reassurance that he’d definitely be there. Fortunately, the health professionals got tough with Nick and instructed a 2 week rest period.Nik’s condition is now well managed and he’s even back to some of the physical activities he enjoyed previously, but there has been a big paradigm shift for him along the way.Rachel and Nik explore why we, particularly as professionals, deny our health concerns and what advice we’d offer a friend who found themselves in a similar situation to Nik.The book Jog On, by Bella Mackie transformed Nik’s personal and professional outlook along his recovery journey. Bella’s story takes us from her marital breakdown and peak of sustained anxiety to a place of personal happiness by discovering exercise.Nik had to return to some uncomfortable memories with this book, but also some great successes as well as making a big mental shift - that exercise is something to be enjoyed, not doggedly pursued for ‘personal bests’! In finding what you enjoy, you’re more likely to gain huge mental health rewards and stick at this as part of your regular self care routine. It’s really important to be aware that the image of the ‘super-fit’ doesn’t always mean happiness. Happiness comes from doing what you enjoy, and if you can find a regular (and even mindful) form of exercise you’ll gain an improved state of mind.Don’t forget that our BRAND NEW membership for busy leaders who want to get productive and thriving teams in the new ways of working is only open for a short time longer.
