    This episode features the fascinating story of Dr. Opiyo Oloya , Superintendant at the York Catholic District School Board. Dr. Opiyo's story is truly inspiring. He left Uganda, the country of his birth, as a refugee as a 23 year old university student. First into Kenya and then eventually to Canada where the World University Service of Canada sponsored his undergraduate program at Queen's University. Dr. Opiyo's love for education led him to complete a Master's degree in Education at the University of Ottawa, which allowed him to begin an illustrious career as a teacher culminating in his appointment as Superintendant. He eventually returned to his home country to work on research into child soldiers in Northern Uganda earning his PhD as a result. He also worked along side the African Mission in Somalia chronicalling their successful war against terror. His work there and subsequent book earned him an honarary Doctorate of Law and a Heroes Medal awared presented to him by the President of Uganda.

    Today we chat with amazing South African multi-award winning jazz pianist and vocalist, Thandi Ntuli . She shares her journey into jazz music, specifically on the piano, which started at a very young age. After high school, Thandi went on to study music formally at the University of Cape Town. In this episode we also discuss some of the emotional events in her life that inspired much of the work on her albums. To date, her many collaborations with various artists and musicians around the globe display her fluidity in genres. Her work has received many awards and nominations including a Metro FM award nomination (2015), a Mbokodo Award (2015) and a South African Music Award (SAMA) nomination (2019). Tim's confidence is founded on focusing on the work at hand and demonstrating as much value as possible and it will ultimately be recognized and rewarded. He concludes by advising to take more risks because there's no glory on playing things too safe.

As a creative director, he launched the Toronto Raptors and Playdium, a game and TV platform for Electronic Arts (EA) VirtualMe, the Rogers WAVE identity, and completed the major rebranding, signage, and wayfinding for the CN Tower. As a business strategist and consultant, he has completed special projects for IBM, KPMG, Levi’s, Norton Rose Fulbright, Suncor, BMO, Jack Daniel’s, Selfridges, and TD. He is also the co-founder of Filminute, the international one-minute film festival now in its 15th year. He launched Filminute in London UK a few years after losing almost everything during the dot-com meltdown. Sabaa's newest entrepreneurial venture is called Wealthie Works Daily, an investment and financial literacy platform for kids (0-18) and their families. The Wealthie Works Daily platform combines ecommerce, content marketing, and financial services built around a continuous news network. Wealthie’s ultimate goal is to build a strong financial future for generations of new investors locally, nationally, and internationally.

    On this episode we chat with Chiedza Museredza, a lawyer working at a prestigious Bay Street law firm in Toronto. Chiedza was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. She left Zimbabwe at 18 years old to pursue her studies in Law and International Relations at the University of Cape Town. During her time at the University of Cape Town, Chiedza was involved in student governance and lead projects that aimed to connect female students (mainly of colour) to executives of companies such as Deloitte, PwC, Standard Bank, McKinsey and Company, and to promote social entrepreneurship. After completing her studies at the University of Cape Town, Chiedza decided to relocate to Toronto, Canada with the ultimate goal of practicing big law at one of the Bay Street law firms. She completed her LL.M in International Business Law at Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in June 2019. She is now practicing at a Bay Street law firm with a focus on Employment, Labour, Privacy and Cybersecurity. Chiedza shares her upbringing story including the challenges of growing up in Harare, being a B and C average student with not much confidence in high school, making a fresh start at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, and encountering a lack of representation in Canada. She also tells us about leaders who have inspired her and shares some of the things she's doing to give back and be a leader as well.

    On today’s show, I interview Dr. Jude Obi Nzeako, a fully qualified and practising Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist interests in Trauma. He graduated from the University of Manchester in the UK then completed a prestigious Orthopaedic Surgical Training programme in London before moving to complete fellowship training in Trauma Surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He’s a passionate teacher, who enjoys speaking and writing within his field. He is active on social media with a following of approximately 25,000 followers across Instagram and Youtube, where he aims to inspire and motivate. On the show, we discussed the impact of having support and positive affirmation from family and mentors, his challenges as an African with ADHD as a child and teenager, finding balance and being focused on excellence. We also talked about how Dr. Jude got into storytelling through photography and videography. His pursuit of excellence has driven him to try to be the best he can possibly be, despite having to work twice as hard as a black doctor. Dr. Jude also shared his leadership philosophy, which was derived from his love for Mike Tyson and what the champion boxer was willing to do to be the best. That’s the goal of podcast, to inspire you to take action in your own leadership journey. Over the last 12 years in my career and throughout my travels around the world, I’ve met and interacted with some truly amazing individuals of African descent who are making a real difference in their spaces. Some of these people are leading large teams and implementing large scale organizational and societal change and others are just starting off, finding their place in world but committed to making an impact and leaving their mark on the world. As Africa continues to rise in prominence and global importance, the stories of these movers and shakers needs to be highlighted for the world to see. That’s why I created this podcast. I want to shine a light on the many talented African gems that are hiding in plain sight, working hard whether in the diaspora, the Caribbean or on the African continent, so they can serve as an inspiration to us all. In each episode, I will have a candid conversation with dynamic individuals from across many industries including healthcare, non-profit, engineering, finance, government, technology, education, entrepreneurs and many more. In each interview, we will discuss their achievements, challenges, dreams and aspirations as well as their leadership philosophy. And at the end of each episode, my hope is that you can take away some tangible and actionable pieces of advice and channel that into your lives as you work to become a leader in your own right.
