ROOT TO FLOURISH 11: Generosity and the Heart of God with Dr. Sean Wood | ALMSGIVING03 2 Corinthians 9:6-12 This Sunday, we'll explore the transformative power of generosity and living a more fulfilling life of faith. Join us as we explore the joy and freedom of giving as we deepen our trust in Jesus. Dr. Sean Wood is currently serving as a Church Advisor for World Vision Canada. Sean brings over 20 years of pastoral experience serving some of Canada's most influential churches. He holds a Doctor of Ministry in Global Leadership from Bethel University, and a Master of Divinity from Tyndale University. He is passionate about life transformation and building a better world where every child can live life in all its fullness. -- For reflection & discussion: What is the connection between gratitude and generosity?' Why is generosity so significant in our relationship with God? How does giving back to God relate to our faith and relationship with wealth? How does giving from a place of love for God impact our attitude towards generosity? What does the story of the poor Widow in Mark chapter 12 teach us about the essence of generosity?

A friend of the show, resident of Jasper joins us to talk about his evacuation experience, how his home was saved, and what he thinks is happening. Then we go over some of the wasteful government programs in Canada, talk about some other current events happening. Darren shows a couple of reports from the Fraser Institute about consumer tax index compared to CPI, Canada's falling GDP ration compared to other OECD countries, Canada Gov website showing almost 1800 ridiculous projects that we are funding here and abroad with a whack of NGO's. Could us some deeper digging. Millions and millions being spent on social programs, trans stuff, Doctors of the World Canada, World Vision Canada, Ukraine the list goes on and on and on. We then get into some Russian comedy on the Faglypics, a Women's Conference for fake babies, the narrative swing with some heavy Eric W tweets, BC changing mandates on Healthcare Jabs - or are they? We also touch on some vaccine stuff, fibrous clot info, excess deaths, the Oxford vaccine slip up, the Redfield answer to mRNA and the ACTBlue money laundering scam. In spite of the early loss of our daughter's life, somehow God was present there, and it was always amazing to me. Something would come up that would remind me of that and somehow get me over. In the end, death doesn't win. Obviously, it's a statement of faith. There's a lot of scientists that would say they can't prove that, but I think for those of us who have walked this trail of spirituality and having experiences of various kinds, there's good evidence that we're not making it up, that something's really happening that's going to shape our lives and give us the energy and the faith to walk through these hard situations and see the light rather than just the darkness.---Listen to Dave and Diane Toycen being interviewed by seasoned journalist and long-time friend Lorna Dueck. The Book of James continues... Let me ask you something. Be honest. What kind of snob are you? Because we're all snobs somewhere. Maybe you're a wine snob. You're like the guy from the movie "Sideways": "If anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving" You may be a coffee snob. Even Starbucks is too pedestrian. You need Kenyan AA beans using purified water. Movie snobs, Music snobs, burger snobs, car snobs, book snobs (Kindle? How gauche!) One kind of snobbery we'd never own? Being a PEOPLE snob. Yet James has a way of calling out the implicit favouritism that we can be unconscious of. It happened 2000 years ago, and it's happening today. We're excited to invite Rocky Dundas, Vice President at World Vision Canada to share his heart.

Impact Leaders - Impact Investment and Performance with Purpose
Guest Bio - David O'Leary David is a wealth management expert, impact investment professional, public speaker, and writer. David spends his time as Founder & Principal of Kind Wealth, a holistic wealth management practice helping early to mid-career Canadians manage their money in a way that matches their values. (See full BIO at the end of the notes) Summary This is yet another fascinating episode that covers so many questions: What is the role of a wealth manager? Or an Investment Manager? Or a Financial Planner? What is the fiduciary duty? And what is the duty of the pension funds and other institutions that are the largest investors in the world? And from a personal perspective, what are some of the best things the “average” person can do to “vote with their dollar”? Do you have to be a high-stakes, risk-taking investor to make a difference? Or can you be involved from early career stages to shape the future world into a sustainable landscape and impact wealth reality? What is the best intersectionality between advisors and clients? How do we measure impact, the access and the inclusion to products, services and the effect they are having on people, the environment and the returns? These and so many more topics are covered during this in-depth episode. Enjoy! Key points The definition of “impact investment” and the spectrum of capital: where or how you want to participate is your personal choice based on your wealth management goals. Somehow, sustainable investment and profit-generation became mutually exclusive, but it doesn't have to be. The impact of having a theory of change Whatever it's called, when your approach to wealth management includes using finances to better the world, your investments will be healthier than if you were only trying to get more money with little regard to how profits are generated. David also produces and hosts The Impact Investing Podcast and is a frequent speaker at conferences and in the media (The Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star, BNN Bloomberg, CNBC Africa, etc.). Previously, David was Managing Director of Origin Capital, the impact investing division of World Vision Canada. Prior to that he co-founded Eden Valley Partners, an advisory practice managing discretionary portfolios and providing financial planning to high net worth Canadians. David spent the first 13 years of his career with Morningstar in both Canada and South Africa in a variety of Director level roles where he specialized in Investment Manager Research. David holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Toronto, an MBA from the Rotman School of Business, the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and the Qualified Associate Financial Planner® (QAFP) designation. He is also working toward the Certified Professional Impact Analyst (CPIA) designation at Queens University. ------- David's short life story In clichéd fashion, my life was transformed when I met a girl. I know, boy meets girl, how original! But her influence led me to take a six-week sabbatical from my job on Bay Street to spend that time volunteering in Sierra Leone with one of the world's largest humanitarian organizations. My goal was to learn about how they were using microfinance to help end poverty. The trip was an emotional roller coaster that left me, at once, angry, sad, inspired, and motivated to do something about the appalling inequality I had witnessed. I didn't realize it then, but two years later I would move to South Africa. Four years after that, I would quit my job in the institutional investment world and move home to pursue work that I felt could make a bigger social impact. This work included co-founding a traditional financial advisory practice that integrated philanthropy with financial planning for retirement-age Canadians. It also included three years leading the impact investing division of the same INGO I had volunteered with all those years ago in Sierra Leone. During this time, I spent evenings and weekends working to get Kind Wealth off the ground. I'm passionate about Kind Wealth because during my 20 years of working in financial services, I came to see the underbelly of the industry and the many ways in which it took advantage of clients, the very people it claims to serve. I have also built a deep understanding of how people's money choices impact the world around us: whether it be decisions about saving, spending, investing, or donating, it all leaves a footprint, for better or worse. I am excited to be building a wealth management practice that actually lives out its values, treats clients fairly, and helps them reach their financial goals in a way they can feel good about. On a personal note, I am a passionate advocate for equality of all stripes but maintain a particular focus on fighting for gender equality and against wealth inequality. I have a wide set of eclectic and often incongruous interests. In what feels like a lifetime ago, I was a competitive boxer in both Canada and South Africa. As such, I spent a great many hours punching other people in the face. Yet I've spent even more time traveling to developing countries trying to understand the root causes of wealth inequality and how I could help tackle it. In recent years I have been on a quest to simplify my life, be content with less, and stay mindful of the impact my life choices have on the world around us. I am currently working on eating less meat and reducing my family's consumption by purchasing or bartering for second-hand goods. Oh, and in case you're wondering, that girl I mentioned at the top of my bio, the one who changed my life, I ended up marrying her and having two strong-willed, socially conscious girls together. ------- Important: The content shared on this podcast does not constitute a request, offer, recommendation or solicitation of any kind to buy, subscribe, sell or redeem any investment instruments or to perform other such transactions of any kind.

What do you think when you hear the words strategic planning? If you're like most nonprofit leaders today, you know strategy is important. You know a good strategy has the power to completely transform your organization's fundraising and development performance. It can energize your staff, volunteers and donors. It can give you the clarify and focus needed to take on the world's most pressing problems. And for small and mid-sized organizations who are working under all kinds of constraints, a good strategy helps you decide where to allocate all of your time and energy and money and staff to make the most difference. But I know what you might be thinking...because unfortunately for many of us, our experience with strategic planning is often just a big binder full of good intentions that ends up sitting on a shelf collecting dust. And that seems like a waste of time and money.Today's guest is on a mission to change that. And he's going to walk us through an easy framework anyone can use to create a clear and compelling strategy for their organization. We're talking to Chris Bosch, former head of strategy for World Vision Canada where he led a major process involving staff at all levels and external stakeholders to re-imagine the future of the $450m NGO. Chris now runs Chisel Consulting, a company that helps organizations get clear about their own mission and purpose so they know what to focus on.

Susan and Will interrupt regularly scheduled programming for a special Canadian federal election episode of The 4am Report. This week they invite one of their favourite guests, Andrew Jenkins, back to the table to talk about the role of digital media when it comes to the election cycle. People get their news on social media. We know this. We read headlines and have the attention span of about 150 characters. We keep up on pop culture via memes and gifs. So what does this mean for political parties? Let's dig in, shall we? Andrew kicks things off with a 101 on the rise of rich media and its impact on how we consume messaging. He talks about how we're image and video obsessed. And how everyone with a smartphone is a creator of content. Will explains a simple formula that illustrates how social media is king when it comes to getting your message out. People aren't watching the evening news. But they are sitting on their couch on their phone scrolling through Tweets and Insta stories. Of course political parties are stepping up. But social media is beast and it won't be tamed. Case in point - Will refers to how Elections Canada royally messed up an influencer campaign that had a price tag of 650K. Basically they didn't properly vet the influencers they chose to work with. Andrew talks some of the benefits of social media when it comes to the election. Politicians can't get away with bending the truth as easily. (Well, at least that's true here in Canada. We won't mention another country where misinformation via Twitter seems to be working quite well for someone). Andrew points to how people are literally fact checked by social media in real time as they speak. Will wonders if politics needs to whole-heartedly embrace memes as a way of communicating with their audience. It seems the only things getting shared these days are memes. Susan states that memes are the 2019 version of the political cartoon. So true! Andrew warns politicians to be careful with trying to create and control memes involving themselves. According to him, just keep your fingers crossed that you end up on the good side of the meme. Trying to control memes could blow up in your face. Susan and Andrew bring it back to some takeaways for our listeners. If we are getting our news about politics via social media, how can we do this responsibly? According to Andrew, it's up to us to make sure we're fact checking and following a diverse group of authorities. The episode ends with Andrew highlighting what he feels is a great benefit of social media when it comes to politics. Back in the day, you'd have to write a letter to your local MP's constituency office. Today, you add the right level of sass to a tweet, and hit post. You have a very direct line of communication to them. About Andrew Andrew Jenkins has provided social media strategy and social selling services to numerous mid to large enterprises such as CIBC, Royal Bank of Canada, BMO Nesbitt Burns, National Bank, Sirius XM Canada, the Globe and Mail, World Vision Canada, and the Aga Khan Foundation. In this episode of the 4 AM Report, we're staying up with Andrew Jenkins, principal at Volterra Digital and social media management guru. Tune in as we talk about why and how data is a dream come true for marketers and why ignoring it is such a nightmare. We ALL use data Regardless of what industry you're in, we all use data. Let's say you're a miner and you need to drill a hole somewhere. You can't just pick any spot to drill, you need to evaluate the area for the right spot and appeal to investors to justify why you should drill a hole in this specific spot. No matter what you do, our decisions are data-driven and CANNOT be ignored! Don't miss out on potential opportunities (or disasters) for your company - look at your data! Don't get lost in translation Today, collecting data is easier than ever. We all know that when it comes to data, using Google Analytics, and monitoring Facebook impressions and engagement are great ways to collect it. The hard part is presenting and explaining it. What is the “so what?” Andrew suggests placing a summary in the beginning of your presentation - whether it's a PowerPoint deck or a report, you need to explain to them why your data matters. Ask yourself, “what is noteworthy about this chart?” and how it can affect their business and stakeholders. This way, your audience gets the information they need upfront and can deep-dive into it at their own pace. Let's be honest, no one likes or is interested in getting a huge package with thousands of excel spreadsheets. Get to the point and provide an insight - your audience will appreciate this and will be more likely to listen to your ideas. The three tiers of metrics Before you look into your metrics, think about what you're trying to accomplish with your business in the first place. Ask yourself, “Where do I see my digital marketing efforts playing a role?” You need to first strategize how your social media efforts can support your business objectives and can meet the needs of your audience. When you identify the needs and how you can meet them, you can start with your baseline. The first tier of metrics is Vanity Metrics. This includes every like and share on Facebook and Instagram, every retweet on Twitter and how many followers you have. Andrew urges you to have a base community and to continually grow it. The next tier is engagement, where the growth happens. You can track its growth and the performance of your efforts to see whether or not the content you're sharing is resonating well with your audience by looking at your metrics and reviewing what has been shared. Finally, the last tier is evaluating what has happened and its relationship to your business objectives. Did your audience sign up for your email list or make a donation? Have you gained more visitors to your website? Once you have this information, you need to translate it into something that your audience can understand. Andrew suggests using charts and maps along with important insights and suggestions for the future. Regardless of what you do, data is key to your business. Be sure to put extra effort into how you collect your data and how you interpret it for others. Don't do anymore guesswork - look at the numbers. You'll be more certain of your decisions and you'll get a good night's sleep. John will share some of that experience. He will talk about the beauty of the country and the heart-gripping stories of children who are orphaned because both parents have died from AIDS. John will also share some of the positive things that are happening, how orphaned children are cared for and given a new lease on life.
