Another Kind of EpidemicHow AHF is combating the opioid epidemic nationwideGUEST BIO:Vahe Lepedjian is an Advanced Practice Pharmacist at AHF's Hollywood flagship pharmacy.Maxie Sabackic is the Western Regional Director of Pharmacy Operations, overseeing all pharmacy operations within the AHF pharmacies served out of California, Washington, and Nevada.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[2:09] - It Starts with a TextA simple beginning to a transformative shiftOne day, Vahe texted Maxie about wanting to do more to combat the opioid pandemic. This simple instance of acting on a positive impulse led to the involvement of sales, public health, advocacy, and managed care departments and AHF partners to offer fentanyl test strips to countless patients and community members. Lives were potentially saved at the very first event where the strips were given out, after two people back to report they had detected deadly fentanyl in a drug sample. A couple days later, 300 units were gone after a single day of San Diego Pride.[7:54] - A Higher-Risk Patient BaseWhat AHF patients should knowAHF patients are at a higher risk of contracting HIV due to IV drug use, something that pharmacists and clinicians at AHF have to be mindful of when treating them. If fentanyl is injected, even if its been cut into other drugs, it can be fatal.[12:04] - Spreading the Word, Spreading the HelpGetting knowledge and test strips nationwideMaxie emphasizes the end goal of AHF's efforts— fighting the opioid epidemic. They've obtained a grant with the Naloxone Distribution Project which provides free units of Narcan, allowing them to hand them out to the community for free. They hope to spread this service to as many states as possible to make the largest possible impact— all while educating pharmacists on their role.[15:45] - If You're Struggling with AddictionThe first step is the most importantIf you're struggling with opioid addiction, know that you can always find support. When you're ready to make a change, AHF will be there to help you make it. AHF can provide Narcan and the training to know how to use it.RESOURCES:[1:41] About the Opioid Epidemic[18:49] Host an Event: preventoverdose@aidshealth.org[19:37] Prevent-Overdose.comFOLLOW:Follow Lauren Hogan: LinkedInFollow AHFter Hours: InstagramABOUT AFTER HOURS:The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is the world's largest HIV/AIDS service organization, operating in 45 countries globally. We are joined in this episode by Lisa Green. Lisa is a medicines safety specialist with a pharmacy career spanning 20 years and was named as one of the Pharmaceutical Journal's ‘Women to Watch' in 2020. Aside from her day job as Head of Pharmacy Operations for one of Europe's largest mental health charities, Lisa is a farm and animal health consultant with a Masters Degree in Veterinary Pharmacy. We chat to Lisa about both of her careers and the challenges and opportunities in having a dual role. We find out about the legalities of prescribing veterinary medicines and the never ending problem of benzodiazepines. On today's episode, I am absolutely delighted to introduce the current Director of Pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic London to the podcast, Francine De Stoppelaar. Francine and I met back in 2018 when I first returned to London from Abu Dhabi. She had recently started her post at that time and was in the initial stages of developing and setting up the pharmacy services for the hospital. There is something really special about working with a start-up team and building something from the ground up! Since then, Cleveland Clinic London has been working tirelessly to set up the hospital as well as overcoming the challenges associated with Brexit and COVID-19. They are set to open the outpatient clinic on Portland Place in September 2021 and the Hospital on Grosvenor Place in January 2022. Francine is an experienced healthcare leader with an extensive track record in Clinical and Pharmacy Operations, Quality and Patient Safety, Capital Builds and Entrepreneurship. Our conversation highlights her ability to thrive when faced with new challenges and experiences. She is definitely brave, she thinks outside the box, and enjoys an adventure in her professional career! I was recently employed by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and my fondest memory of working there was the culture that the organisation fostered where you felt like you were working with family. I also loved the fact that they prioritised your health and wellbeing as they know and believe that looking after yourself first will ensure you can look after your patients. This "patient-first" culture was a huge priority and an element of their brand they are very proud of. If you are interested in working for Cleveland Clinic London or looking to start a new adventure, have a look at some of the links below where you can find more information about the pharmacy services, recruitment, and the Cleveland Clinic London life. Inventory Nation with Nicole Clausen - All Things Inventory Management for Veterinary Professionals
In this episode of the Inventory Nation Podcast, I’m delighted to be joined by Jessica Reuterskiold, CVT, MS, the Director of Inventory Management and Pharmacy Operations at a multi-location practice.
Today’s episode is an interview with Dr. Muhammad Umar Hafeez. He uses his voice to advocate telepharmacy and educate pharmacists and pharmacy students online. He’s also the only pharmacist I know who occasionally has to take a helicopter to get to work. Dr. Umar loves his job. His education, work experience, and personal sense of adventure led him to what he does today. No matter what industry you are in, I hope you find a way to use your voice in a way that you love. Telepharmacy and telemedicine have become essential during the COVID pandemic. Using electronic information and telecommunication technologies, telepharmacy allows contact between patients and pharmacists. Care, advice, education, reminders, monitoring, and more can still be provided when in-person interactions are not an option. My guest is Dr. Muhammad Umar Hafeez (Dr. Umar). We are physically more than 7,000 miles apart, but Dr. Umar and I were able to connect for an interview on June 15. Because of his unique work setting, he has been using tele pharmacy since well before the COVID pandemic. Dr. Umar is a pharmacist. He graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan in 2012. Then, he earned his MBA in 2019, from the Dubai campus of the Spanish institute Universidad Católica de Murcia (also known as UCAM or The Catholic University of Murcia). Dubai is located in the United Arab Emirates (abbreviated UAE). Over the past eight years, Dr. Umar’s work experience has included roles in hospital, research, freelance work, quality audits, training, education, and tele-pharmacy. Dr. Umar lives in Abu Dhabi, which is located in the UAE. He supervises Pharmacy Operations for the leading oil and gas company in the UAE. He is a strong advocate of telepharmacy. His telepharmacy practice sites include oil rigs (both onshore and offshore), remote sites in the desert, deep sea platforms, oil barges, and natural and man-made islands in the Arabian Gulf. In his spare time, he volunteers online with a group called “Giving Back To Pharmacy In Pakistan.” It can be described as an organization of volunteer Pharmacists from around the world aiming to refine the Pharmacy Profession in Pakistan by sharing best practices and engaging relevant stakeholders. He helps both pharmacists and pharmacy students. Mentioned in this episode Giving Back to Pharmacy In Pakistan (https://www.linkedin.com/company/giving-back-to-pharmacy-in-pakistan) Dr. Umar’s LinkedIn Profile linkedin.com/in/muhammad-umar-hafeez-pharm-d-mba-997ab949 Highlights from the interview During a typical week (pre-COVID), Dr. Umar is in the office 3 days/week and in the field 2 days/week. He is a subject matter specialist on medications, but he also performs business roles, such as KPI review. Dr. Umar supervises 150 sites. Some sites provide emergency healthcare services. Others are general practice clinics, first aid posts, and field hospitals. Dr. Umar gets to visit ALL the sites. He is adventurous! Many of the pharmacists Dr. Umar supervises work 14-28 days on-site, then 14-28 days off-site, similar to the gas and oil workers. Workers typically bring their own meds from home. Because of COVID, the schedule has temporarily changed. Chronic medications are transported to remote sites using a variety of vehicles, such as helicopters, jeeps, jets, etc. There are travel restrictions in the UAE related to the COVID pandemic. Using telepharmacy, secure and confidential counseling is provided, among other services. As a supervisor, Dr. Umar oversees pharmacy operations across the UAE. Depending on the site, formularies may be used if a pharmacist is not present. Teamwork is important, and nurses dispense medications when a pharmacist is not present. Communication can be a challenge in some of the most remote sites under Dr. Umar’s supervision. Radio communication is sometimes the only option. Because telepharmacy was in place prior to COVID, Dr. Umar’s practice sites have refined a system that was already in place. It was working well, and now it is stronger. Dr. Umar and his team are more confident in their ability to provide care. Dr. Umar loves to learn. He believes a continuous learning attitude is important. What education is needed for Dr. Umar’s job? A Pharm D, a license to practice in the UAE, a management degree (MBA), and other safety certifications related to the oil and gas industry. Giving Back to Pharmacy In Pakistan provides coaching and mentoring in the form of online webinars and lectures. You may visit the link provided in the show notes for more information. He mentors pharmacists and pharmacy students by exposing them to real-world scenarios so they can learn and gain more practical experience. The Pharmacist’s Voice Podcast has listeners in 23 countries and 39 US States.

Building Your Pharmacy Career – Pharmacy Podcast Series part II Sponsored by CVS Health Careers: Millions of times a day, pharmacists are helping people on their path to better health—from advising on prescriptions to helping manage chronic and specialty conditions. Because pharmacists are present in so many moments, big and small, they have an active, supportive role in shaping the future of health care. Today’s interview is with CVS Health Careers Papatya Tankut, R.Ph. Vice President, Pharmacy Affairs at CVS Health. Where my career began and how it advanced through the years I am a 1994 graduate of the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy with a B.S. in Pharmacy I have been working for CVS Health (CVS Pharmacy) ever since I graduated from Pharmacy School – 23 years ago My career began as a pharmacist in the Washington Metro area, and soon transitioned to a pharmacy manager After four and a half years directly serving patients, I was promoted to a field management role, Manager, Professional and College Relations. In that role, I was responsible for recruiting and hiring pharmacists and interns for our stores in the Washington Metro and Central Pennsylvania markets – building relationships with the area schools of pharmacy and the professional associations. Five years into that position, I was approached to interview for the Director of Pharmacy Recruiting position, located in the corporate office in Woonsocket, RI. My responsibilities involved owning the recruitment strategy for the organization at a time when CVS was heavily focused on acquiring many large retail competitors (Eckerd, Savon/Osco, Longs) In 2005, having 1 year under my belt in the corporate office, I was approached to take on a newly created role of Vice President, Pharmacy Professional Services. This position encompassed many challenging facets of the professional side of pharmacy – recruitment of pharmacist and interns, clinical services, quality assurance and patient safety, regulatory compliance and professional practice standards. Since moving to the corporate office, I also had the unique opportunity of being media trained and serving as a spokesperson for key pharmacy issues affecting our business and industry At the end of 2013, after having spent my entire pharmacy career in Pharmacy Operations, I was asked to consider a position in Corporate Communications as the Vice President of Pharmacy Affairs, the role I hold today. This role initially began as responsibility for establishing and deepening the Company’s relationships with non-profit, governmental and other health-based organizations to raise awareness of the many ways CVS Health is helping people on their path to better health. Today, it has continued to evolve into managing our company’s Corporate Communications Public Affairs strategy through position CVS Health as a relevant leader in the health care landscape expanding our influence with the policymaker audience all with the intent of enhancing the company’s visibility and marketplace. Finally, in August 2016 I also assumed the ownership and management of our Corporate Meetings and Events Department. As the profession of pharmacy and the landscape continues to evolve and change, the opportunities and career tracks for pharmacists have significantly progressed too More than a decade or so ago, it was customary for pharmacists to generally choose from 2 to 3 career tracks – community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy or continued education through residency programs. Today, a pharmacist’s career path is endless. Many pharmacists take advantage of the traditional frontline pharmacist roles, while others have the ability to venture into field and areas of healthcare where a pharmacist role is important. Pharmacists are an integral part of the healthcare delivery system where their medication and drug expertise are critical, their ability to educate and influence around immunizations and opioids are imperative to public health and their presence in the community is paramount. With the years of training and preparedness, pharmacists are playing a very important role in helping people on their path to better health – whether it’s on the frontline or in management or consultant roles. Working for CVS Health feels like the opportunity to explore and work for many different companies – all under one roof. The opportunities are truly endless A pharmacist at CVS Health is a pharmacist with endless opportunities. Many graduating students will begin their career as a pharmacist at CVS Health – whether it’s in the retail pharmacies, at a specialty pharmacy or at one of our mail order facilities. The roles and responsibilities vary and colleagues have the opportunity to explore different workplace settings throughout their career In addition to the practicing pharmacist roles, many corporate departments across the organization are led by or include pharmacists on their teams. Some are more tradition than others. Pharmacy Operations, Store Operations, Regulatory, Legal and Government Affairs, Underwriting and Contracting, Clinical Operations, Marketing, Merchandising, Corporate Communications, Human Resources, and Government Services to name a few With the many business units at CVS Health, pharmacists can have a career that spans from ‘Cradle to Grave’, feeling like a new opportunity each time. Working in a retail store is very different than a management position, which is very different that working for our Omnicare or MinuteClinic divisions. Having a sound education, being open to new opportunities and willing to take risks is key to success in Pharmacy and CVS Health is certainly a company to help you get there CVS Health is a great place to start your career and a great place to end your career Many times, pharmacists are asked why they chose pharmacy as a career– and the answer is always the same – to have the opportunity to take care of patients. That’s the most rewarding part of the profession. Being a CVS pharmacist in the many 100+ different positions and roles that are available provides that gratification and send of accomplishment Opportunities are sometimes a clear fit for a pharmacist, and other times they require the individual to assume some risk and work in a white space area With all scenarios, the organization is ready to walk with you as you take the next step in your desired career path. We welcome back David Harlow BS, Pharm. D.Chief Pharmacy Officer of Martin Health System. Dr. Harlow received his B.S. in Pharm in 1992 from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his Doctoral work at the University of Florida. Professionally, Dr. Harlow joined the Martin Health System as the Chief Pharmacy Officer, coming from Carilion Clinic's ACO as the Regional Director of Pharmacy Operations for Southwestern Virginia. Additionally, Dr. Harlow is the executive officer of PharmaDym, a clinical pharmacy consulting firm. His experience also includes retail pharmacy ownership, home infusion and pharmacy benefit management. The first step towards assigning more responsibility to pharmacists, and thus improving medication adherence, is to identify where your organization may be falling short in terms of adherence. A logical place to start is with chronic patients. This level of patient generally has a complicated medication regimen, which can reduce the chance of full adherence to their prescribed routines. This often leads to multiple office or emergency room visits and higher usage of healthcare resources, not to mention lower HEDIS scores for the healthcare providers they are visiting. With total non-adherence potentially costing the U.S. health system $290 billion annually, the importance of helping chronic patients with adherence cannot be overstated. The ACA changes the role of the pharmacist as we know it and is redirecting our approach to healthcare delivery. Collaboration between physicians and pharmacists brings the pharmacist out of the basement and onto the front lines as part of the overall care plan. As chronic diseases continue to rise in prevalence, this collaboration can augment patient involvement, help improve medication adherence, improve cost‐efficiency and alleviate some of the demands affecting the healthcare system. As we move toward a value-based healthcare system, the pharmacist is only becoming more vital to the health of healthcare.
