Sarah Clayborne is a widow, living alone in an old and stately manor house called Whitegates. One Halloween, Sarah takes a walk and slips on a frozen puddle, injuring her ankle. She takes to bed in her old and lonely home. Her painful broken foot is the least of her troubles, however, as she finds herself in the center of a good old fashioned ghost story. One Halloween, Jen decided she was going to call out all the BS on LinkedIn like sleazy DMs and robotic posts - just as a joke. She called it “LinkedIn Horror Stories”. The next day, 10 different people scheduled sales calls with her. How come? She replaced professionalism with personality, and it worked - in this episode, she explains why it worked and how you can follow in her footsteps of finding clients on LinkedIn. Jen Corcoran is an award-winning LinkedIn consultant for female coaches, consultants, and trainers. “ I think so many people, they don't show up as human. They're like “Ooh, I've heard LinkedIn's great for sales. I'm gonna go on it like Amazon and just ping it out.” And it doesn't work like that.” - Jen CorcoranFrom the show:3 things to start doing on LinkedIn today:1. Go rogue and bring your real self to LinkedIn. If you're generic, no one can connect with you on a deeper level. Find out who you are and what comes naturally to you, then go all in on being yourself - that's how you make LinkedIn content creation easier and funner. You'll repel the wrong people, and attract the ones that want more of you being you. 2. Who are your people? Figure out who your core audience really is so that you can bring them the content they're looking for. You want to discover what your audience wants in their own words. Use surveys or interviews to understand your people deeply. 3. Don't fixate on what type of content you should create on LinkedIn. Instead, fixate on what type of content you can't wait to create. The format doesn't matter, the substance does. Memorable moments: (03:26) “I'm always myself and not afraid to bring myself to comments, but for some reason I was in my head about my actual content. I was in that professional mode. And don't get me wrong, it is good, like it does resonate with some people, but I just decided I had to bring all of myself to the table.” (21:08) When leaving people DMs and comments: “it should never be about you. It always should be about how you are interrupting their day in a positive way” (24:12) “You could have 200 connections - and if they are quality and the right people, you will generate leads as a business owner because it will be about referrals, getting introductions, and tapping into their network.”LinksConnect with Jen Read LinkedIn Horror StoriesWin a 1 of 3 FREE seats to the Maximize Your LinkedIn Profile WorkshopTo enter: 1) Subscribe and rate the Build a Brand with Rosie Parsons podcast on the podcast app of your choice 2) Send a screenshot of your review to rosie@rosieparsonsphotography.com with the subject line LinkedIn Competition. We welcome actor, pro wrestler, and stunt man Justin Mane this week to first discuss what it is that gets us in the Halloween mood in our Retro Roundtable. I gotta say, this conversation went left of center, but in a great way. I love when our conversations end up miles away from where they began and this is a great example of just that. Let us know what puts you in the Halloween mood on Facebook and Instagram! Then we turn our attention to Justin to talk about his fan film, Crow. One Halloween night, a Detroit man wades through a brutal odyssey of his memories and dreams, searching for the men who left him to die in the trunk of a car. An original story and a fan film of the cult series “The Crow” by James O'Barr, starring the late Brandon Lee. Watch in now at CrowFanFilm.com for free! All Saints' Day arrived with a flourish. 2:30 am. Time change made it 1:30 am. Awake and deciding to read for awhile, I turn on a bedside lamp. No response. I try again. Nothing. Inconvenienced now, I get up and change the bulb. No response. Fine. I use another reading light. In the morning, as I suspected, the visitor is gone. The light responds just like it should have last night. No issues with the switch. Bulbs are both fine.Tweaked. Are you paying attention? This is my normal. This haunted house experience happened over a year ago. I have mentioned it but could not reveal the location. Now that the house has been torn down, I can identify it. Although the house is gone, a [one or more] presence might in the space. Our physical plane is simply an overlay. Spirits of land and dwellings occupy their own space. When our PSI abilities evolve we will notice them. They can be positive and/or negative given our awareness and our response.~ ~ ~ On that note, my experience has been one of protection. One Halloween several years ago, I was invited to a small gathering at a (haunted) bookstore. One guest introduced himself as a warlock and filmmaker. He offered some wine he brought to share (The labels were odd). I abstained but accepted a business card to consider interviewing him. At home, shortly before midnight, my husband and I werein bed when we heard tapping on the bedroom window. Too high for a person. No birds. No shadow to be seen. We elected not to open the curtain and ignored the entertainment. It stopped. No doubt having other homes to visit.I threw away the business card, an inadvertent invitation and tracking method. I have no proof simply a gut instinct I have learned to trust. There is so much more going on here that it would seem. Believe it or not. Halloween is not a joke. All Saints' Day liberates and clears the ghosts.

In this episode we will be discussing the following: Part 1 - History of Halloween Part 2 - Halloween in the United States Part 3 – Short Story / question & answer Hi everyone, my name is David, and it is my goal to help you learn English faster. Learning to speak English is easier than you think, you just need to use the correct learning methods. Remember that you can always access the complete written transcripts for each podcast at learningenglishfaster.com. Part 1 - History of Halloween Halloween's origins date back to an ancient Celtic festival, about 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the cold, dark winter. This was a time of year that was often associated with human death. The Celtic people believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31st, it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. To celebrate this event, people built huge bonfires, where they gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to their gods. During the celebration, the Celtic people wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins. By the 9th century, the church established All Souls' Day and people celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and by dressing up in costumes of saints, angels, and devils. The night before it began to be called All-Hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Part 2 – Halloween in the United States The first celebrations included in the United States consisted of “play parties,” which were public events held to celebrate the harvest. Neighbors would share stories of the dead, dance, and sing. By the middle of the 19th century, annual fall festivities were common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the country. In the second half of the 19th century, America was flooded with new immigrants. These new immigrants, especially the millions of Irish fleeing the Irish Potato Famine, helped to popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Today, in the United States, American kids dress up in costumes and go house to house, knocking on doors and saying, “trick or treat?” Most houses prepare for the event and participate with a small, but delicious donation of candy. Houses are frequently decorated, and it is common to carve scary faces into pumpkins and make them into glowing jack-o-lanterns by putting a candle inside. One recent change is that many young adults are celebrating the pagan holiday. Today, over 70% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 34 dress up and celebrate Halloween, but instead of going house to house, they go from bar to bar or to Halloween parties. Part 3 – Short story Just listen and try to paint a picture of the story in your mind One Halloween night when I was about 12 years old, my friends and I decided to run around after dark and trick or treat for candy. After meeting my friends, and trick or treating around our neighborhood, we emptied our bags of candy at home, that is the candy we did not already eat. Then, we decided to try and get even more candy by going to a neighborhood on the other side of town. To get there, we had to cut through the woods. The woods were dark and creepy, so we told each other scary stories about monsters and devil worshipers. Then, we saw a bonfire flickering in the distance. As we got closer, we could --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/david-raczynski/support

As I drive around town, I find myself saying the occasional "oooo!", "ahhh!", or "oh?!" Do you know why? There are Halloween decorations all over the place, and they make a real impression. There seem to be two approaches to decorating for Halloween: friendly or scary. Personally, I prefer friendly. The time of year leads me to decorate with themes of pumpkins, Autumn leaves, and the harvest. Okay, I throw in the odd friendly ghost here and there, a black cat, or some fake bats. But you can find a pleasant version of those things. Other people, however, choose to really scare. Perhaps they don't get frightened easily. Some of the houses near us are quite shocking. There is one with a huge skull picture in the window that is pulling an awful face, and then outside, on the front lawn are fake tombstones everywhere. I suppose it's all a bit of fun; it just depends on your taste. My oldest son seemed to enjoy the dark side of things a few years ago. One Halloween night, when all of my children dressed up and we took them out to trick or treat, he chose to go as the Grim Reaper, you know, Death. He wore a long black hooded cape, and had a mask on like 'the scream' by Edvard Munch. The rest of us were friendly looking creatures, and so he stood out in contrast. We stopped by a local church that had free hotdogs and lots of candies for Halloween night, and as we went from booth to booth, people would look at my son twice, the first time in shock, the second time in horror. On another occasion, he was dressed like Darth Vader from Star Wars, which wasn't bad at all I thought. However, he had a battery run voice pack that had some pre-recorded sayings by Darth Vader. I didn't pay much attention to it at all, until we got to the church parking lot, and the kids were filling up their candy buckets at the booths. Hudson turned on his voice pack, and you could hear, " You don't know the power of the dark side!" I'm sure some people found it distasteful or inappropriate; I actually thought it was hilarious. And Hudson, like the rest of the kids, was only concerned about getting as much candy as possible. Grammar notes. Related vocabulary: to make an impression, the odd....here and there, version, hooded. 1. He made a real impression on me; he was polite and very helpful. 2. You can see the odd farmhouse here and there in the valley. 3. The new version of 'Thriller' is not at all as good as the original. 4. My sweater is hooded, so I can keep my head warm when I go out in the snow. // //
