This week on the Major Issues Podcast, the hosts break down Superman/Spider-Man #1, the latest crossover bringing two icons back together in a way that feels both classic and modern. Written by Brad Meltzer with art by Pepe Larraz, the main story gets a full dissection as the hosts explore how this team captures the ideals, tone, and dynamic between Superman and Spider-Man while delivering a crossover that feels worthy of both legacies. The episode also digs into the issue's backup stories, spotlighting contributions from Tom King and Mitch Gerads, as well as Rainbow Rowell and Humberto Ramos. Each creative team brings a distinct tone and perspective, from introspective character work to more energetic, classic superhero storytelling, expanding the scope of the crossover beyond the main event. It is a layered look at a crossover that is not just about two legends meeting again, but about how multiple creative voices interpret that moment in different ways. Big headline of the week: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the current box-office monster. Deadline reports it is tracking to more than $370 million worldwide and Variety says it pulled $48.3 million Friday domestically, with a projected $129.4 million traditional weekend, making it the biggest opening of the year so far. That gives you a clean lead story: game adaptations are still gold, and Nintendo/Universal look like they've turned Mario into a true event franchise.Star Wars buzz: Disney+ launches Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord on April 6, 2026 with a two-episode premiere, then two episodes weekly through the May 4 finale. Even bigger for fans, Lucasfilm already confirmed Season 2 before Season 1 even premieres, so the confidence level is high. Also, The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters May 22, 2026, which is a strong “Star Wars is back on the big screen” talking point.Marvel movie/TV angle: Marvel's next Spidey film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is set for July 31, 2026, while Avengers: Doomsday remains one of the biggest tentpoles on deck for December 18, 2026. On the TV side, The BoysSeason 5 premieres April 8, 2026 on Prime Video and is the final season, so superhero fatigue is not killing interest when the hook is “final chapter.”DC watch: DC has Supergirl landing in theaters June 26, 2026, and the new teaser push gives you a nice compare/contrast segment against Marvel's 2026 slate. A good on-air question is whether DC's newer, cleaner rollout under Gunn is finally becoming easier for casual fans to follow.“Mario isn't just a hit, it's becoming one of Hollywood's safest blockbuster bets.”“Star Wars has two lanes right now: gritty Disney+ with Maul, and event cinema with Mando and Grogu.”“Marvel's comic side may be having the most fun right now—big event books, MTG crossover cards, and Marvel/DC team-ups.”

Marvel, DC and US Security: The Superhero Genre and Foreign Policy in the Twenty-first Century (Edinburgh UP, 2025) by Dr. Julian Schmid considers how the long-standing superhero genre has been reinvigorated in the twenty-first century as an interlocutor of security and surveillance discourses following the events of ‘9/11'. While superheroes have a long cultural history, Dr. Schmid argues that their contemporary representations in Hollywood films and TV shows create and deepen specific discourses on security, terrorism and violence. He shows how the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, in particular, are important artefacts that can help us to understand how these discourses are popularised and ultimately normalised. The book offers a rich account of the emergence of superheroes against the backdrop of America's history since its founding in 1776 and their rise to popularity through comic books since the 1930s. Analysing the connections between superheroes, foreign policy and security from ‘9/11' to the present, it demonstrates the significance of superheroes for the construction of heroism and security in contemporary times.  This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Unveiled at CCXP Brazil on Dec 7, 2025, this first look thrusts us into Homelander's dystopian America—a world warped by his erratic, egomaniacal rule, where Supes enforce martial law and The Boys face their darkest hour.Hughie, Mother's Milk, and Frenchie rot in a brutal "Freedom Camp," while Starlight (Annie) rallies a desperate resistance against an unstoppable Supe army. Kimiko vanishes into the chaos, leaving fans on edge. Enter Billy Butcher, resurfacing with a game-changing virus poised to eradicate all Supes, igniting a chain reaction that promises to shatter the world forever. "It's the climax, people. Big stuff's gonna happen," teases the trailer's tagline, amplified by Karl Urban's gravelly narration and Antony Starr's chilling Homelander smirk. The teaser spotlights epic returns: Jensen Ackles' cryogenic Soldier Boy thaws for chaos, joined by Supernatural reunion magic with Jared Padalecki's mysterious new role (hint: shadowy alliance with Homelander) and whispers of Misha Collins. Eric Kripke's panel reveal has sparked frenzy, with the two-episode premiere kicking off weekly drops through the May 20 finale—setting up an all-out bloodbath blending satire, betrayal, and Supe genocide stakes.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the trailer's shocking visuals, plot twists, and why this endgame elevates The Boys beyond Marvel/DC tropes into must-watch TV anarchy. From Homelander's cult empire to Butcher's moral abyss, explore how Season 5 delivers the gore-soaked payoff we've craved. ¡Dorothy!
