I'm brought back "Cottage Cocktails"! I haven't posted a Cottage Cocktails mix since 2019, but after djing an amazing cottage tent wedding last summer, I was inspired to record a cocktail mix that would be the perfect soundtrack for that cottage setting (but the couple that weekend had their own plans for cocktail music) so the following weekend I recorded this during cocktails at a wedding downtown Toronto. Recorded in the big city, but this is meant to be listened to up in Muskoka, or at the very least while floating in a pool, or perhaps just sitting around a backyard bonfire (or sipping on a coffee or tea in your favourite comfy chair). The people spoke! I asked Instagram what I should post first, a house focused live recording from Beacon last month, or my eclectic 2024 Bar Promo that I recorded back at the same time as "So This Is 50", and the people wanted the Beacon mix first, so here it is! Beacon is an older crowd to begin with, and this particular night there were 2 birthday parties for women around my age, so there was plenty of retro remixes being thrown in the mix! It's a full night mix so it starts off a little more chill while dinner is ending, then picks up the energy as the night transitions from restaurant to bar. How am I 50???? Well I am, and I celebrated in Miami, including djing several happy hour sets at Better Days...where they give me the musical freedom to record mixes like this! (Thank you Will and team)  The first half starts off chill, a little lovers rock remixes, lots of rn'b, 90's hip hop, some old school and retro (you know me, nice and eclectic - hell, I start with a slow Adele song!) and then gets into some old school / retro and even a nostalgic freestyle set, reminiscent of my youthful March Break trips to Miami, listening to Power 96! Then the 2nd half I'm starting to build up the energy with some indie dance, then into some retro remixes, into house remixes of hip hop, into a throwback 90's hip hop set. (Ignore the fader cut outs in The City Is Mine near the end, DJ Spiff had just pulled up to the booth to head on after me, and the Brooklyn in him couldn't be held back lol!). I know I'm still horribly behind on the monthly mixes here on Podomatic (you can stream the newer ones on Mixcloud ;-) but figured it made sense for the holiday season to jump ahead and post my "A Soul Shack Christmas (aka "Christmas Cocktails 2024)" mix, so it can be enjoyed over the holidays.I really didn't think I was going to be able to make a 2024 edition, but determined, I found a way! I recorded about 2hrs in my headphones on a 2nd setup during dinner at Alexie's winter formal Thursday night, then about 1.5hrs of the mix that I knew I could get away with at my gig at STK Friday night, then Saturday morning recorded the other hour or so, and then put it all together!Knowing I wasn't recording it live, this one musically is more like a "Soul Shack Christmas" really and is definitely more for people my age (so much retro!). I've been sitting on this mix for a while! Back in November I finally made it back out west and did another poolside rooftop set at the Broken Shaker LA. There will be Better Days ahead! I haven't played a gig in over 1/2 a year now, so no new mixes to post, leaving me to dig into the archives. One of the places I miss playing the most is Better Days in Miami, so I figured I'd post the recording from my last time there, back in January. I play an afterwork set there, so it starts a little more chill and then builds up to a party vibe for the late nite dj to take over. My Better Days sets are definitely different to my other Miami sets, with more hip hop, top 40, party vibes. I know I'm still playing catch up here on Podomatic and the last post was the Summer Soundtrack, but it would be pointless to eventually post the December mix a few months from now, when the December mix is a "Christmas Cocktails" mix including Christmas music! So the next mix I post after this will be the September mix and so on, but for now, to get you into the Christmas spirit I give you "Christmas Cocktails 2020". I've posted a Christmas Cocktails mix on Mixcloud for about the last 3 or 4 years, which I would record at a corporate holiday party...but no holiday parties to dj this year :-( But with Covid, I felt like this year more than any, I needed to post a holiday mix, so I took lots of love, care and time creating this playlist, and then recording it at home. Without recording it for a live corporate audience, I could include types of music I typically wouldn't play at a holiday party, both because I needed to leave them to play later during the actual "dance" part of the evening, or because they leaned more towards Soul Shack taste and not so much mainstream taste. With this freedom, and spending a few weeks thinking of songs to include, my planned 2 hour cocktails mix turned into a 4hr mix that has the typical cocktails vibe for the first half, and then more of a dance/party vibe for the second half. I always dj for my birthday, but this year was very different! With Covid-19 shutting down all gigs, I still wanted to dj for my birthday, so I went the livestream route. This is special. I was supposed to be djing a "grads of the 90's" reunion dance in May for my old high school, but it was obviously cancelled. I thought about recording a short 90's mix with a bit of everything...but that idea morphed into this 90's house mix. Putting this together was beyond nostalgic. I didn't realize the significance of this time period. In 1990 I was in gr 10, by 2000 I got married. In the decade between I started going to all ages clubs (NRG in Burlington) then turned 19 & started going to clubs in Toronto (like Whiskey Saigon, Club Max & Oz), I started djing & record collecting & then by the end of the decade I went from the more "club" house making up most of this mix, to the more soulful stuff (& going to Roxy Blu). These 80 songs all are significant to me - I would love to know which ones are significant for you. Also, I know I get a ton of downloads on Podomatic (to the point where I reach my bandwidth limit within days of resetting it, and can't upload a new mix until it resets again) but I have no idea who any of you are. We brought Mr. V back to Toronto on Sept 7th and even though this party was going to be more of a house music warehouse party... I felt it was still appropriate to open the night up Soul Shack style, starting out at 90bpm "proper" hip hop vibes, and building to house music for everyone else to take over (thinking back to the lounge in Roxy Blu back in the days, before opening the main room).
