Hello Wednesday!!! Dean and Loch are down to chat about Dean's former employer's documentary about the history of CFNY (102.1 The Edge) in Toronto. The radio station experienced the height of its success from 2000-2015. Dean had the longest-serving and most successful show in CFNY's history and JUST found out about the documentary, which is done. Lochlin wants to know if Dean gives a shit, and surprisingly, he doesn't. He explains why, offers people some backstory into the natural history of CFNY, and wonders if they cover all the stuff Live Earl Jive did with "interns" in the 70s and 80s. Dean goes into a long lesson on concentrating on what we control and what we don't, and it's a lesson everyone should listen to. It might save another convoy or keep certain people away from trans kids' book readings. Some Edmontonians could have used Dean's advice yesterday. They mocked and mobbed Justin Trudeau, who was in Alberta, to help build emergency housing for a province that hates its people. Trudeau also started an A & W boycott after Pierre Poilievere fans decided to boycott the delicious burger joint after Trudeau was seen buying A & W for his family. Lochlin worries about Adam Lulu, the spokesperson for A & W's job. Way to go, Trudeau.
Last June, I got to watch Maie Pauts receive the Rosalie Tromblay Trailblazer Award. There was a 10 minute video summary of her career along with the tributes and highlights. This is a longer version of that.In this episode, you'll hear how Maie got her start in radio at the campus station at Ryerson University in Toronto. She originally wanted to work in TV production but fell in love with radio after joining the campus station. She hosted a funk/R&B show at the campus station before getting her first radio job at an AM station in Brampton. She later joined the legendary CFNY station in Toronto where she worked from 1986-2001. In the 90s, CFNY went through an ownership change and started playing more commercial hits, which upset some core listeners. But it also led to increased ratings. After leaving CFNY, Maie did a short stint in talk radio before joining CHUM FM's in 2002. She later moved to Boom 97.3 in 2010, playing hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s.What's the key to Boom's success? Talking about current events while playing older music. This allows the brand and personalities to connect with listeners of all ages. Finally, Maie received the Rosalie Trombley Trailblazer Award from Radio Trailblazers Canada for her contributions to radio over a 40+ year career. If you would like to nominate someone for that award this year, please nominate them now. Thanks to the our supporters!Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe, listen to Bell's next pick, The Barenaked Ladies' Gordon. Their debut album, Gordon was produced after the band won a contest with a $100,000 prize at the Toronto radio station, CFNY. Gordon was released in 1992 and sold 80,000 copies in its first 24 hours of release, and then proceeded to chart in Canada for 8 consecutive weeks. Consisting of 14 tracks - 6 of which had appeared in forms on their previous demo tapes, reviewers described the album variously as 'whimsical', 'hyperactive' and 'brooding' all at the same time. Steven Page, the lead singer on most of the album, bemoaned in many interviews that the album was probably the most bootlegged album of all time, with the number of fans who know every word on the album outnumbering actual sales four to one. What would the boys do if they had $1000000? Does Plouffe's fridge have Dijon ketchup in it? Come along and find out!

Pink Floyd would score another big hit and some mainstream crossover success with their eleventh studio album, The Wall. Originally conceived by bassist Roger Waters, The Wall explores the self-isolation of a cynical rock star named Pink, and portrays events in his life from the loss of his father, to childhood trauma, to the pressures of rock stardom as bricks forming the wall. Parts of the story are autobiographical from Waters, and parts naturally are based on former front man Syd Barrett. The album was a commercial success, the most successful double album of all time, the second most popular Pink Floyd album behind their monstrous hit "Dark Side of the Moon," and would produce the groups only number 1 single on the charts with "Another Brick in the Wall, part 2." Critical reviews were mixed at first, with some considering the rock opera to be pretentious, but the reviews would turn more positive over time. This would be the last album to feature the classic band lineup. Richard Wright would be fired by Roger Waters during production, though he would stay on as a studio musician for the album. One further studio album would be produced before acrimony would lead to Waters departure from the band. What the Riff co-founder Brian Dickhute brings us this album for today's podcast. Brian is also using this as a swan song of sorts as he takes a break from regular podcasting duties to spend more time with the family. Thanks so much for all your work over these hundreds of podcasts, Brian! Hey YouThis well-known track leads off side three of the album and reflects the desperation as Pink realizes how the wall of isolation he has built has trapped him in a cell of his own creation. The inspiration for this song was the breakup of Waters' marriage. Is There Anybody Out There? In the film this song is used to transition from Pink the rock star to Pink the dictator. Session musician Joe DiBlasi was brought in to play the fingerstyle guitar on this piece.Nobody's HomeThe last song written for the album was the result of a fight between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. It was inspired by the isolation Waters felt during their 1977 tour and musings on Syd Barrett. Some of the lyrics are also built around Richard Wright, keyboardist, who was allegedly dealing with drug addiction at the time.VeraThis song is a flashback to days of World War II. The title was inspired by Vera Lynn, a British singer popular during the war who sang the song "We'll Meet Again." Waters lost his grandfather in WWI and his father in WWII.Bring the Boys Back HomeRoger Waters considers this brief song the central theme of the album. The idea is that not just war, but all activity including business and rock music should not be allowed to isolate a person from friends and family. Comfortably NumbOne of the more popular songs from the album, the music was written by David Gilmour and the lyrics by Roger Waters. A significant argument occurred between Gilmour and Waters on the arrangement of this piece, with Gilmour preferring a stripped-down format and Watters wanting a more symphonic approach. The contrasting sections of orchestration and more simplistic riffs is the result of the compromise made for the piece. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Frosty the Snowman by Jimmy Durante No, it isn't Christmas again. Popular entertainer Jimmy Durante passed away in January of 1980, and his is one of his best known songs. STAFF PICKS:The Spirit of Radio by Rush Bruce sneaks another Rush song in for Brian's final episode as a regular podcaster. The lead-off track to Rush's album "Permanent Waves" was inspired by the slogan of CFNY-FM in Toronto. FM radio was moving from a more free-form format to a more commercial format, and CFNY was bucking the trend. Damned If I Do by the Alan Parsons ProjectRob brings us a piece from Alan Parsons' fourth studio album called "Eve." The album is focused on the strength and characteristics of women and the difficulties they face in a world of men. "Damned if I do, damned if I don't, but I love you."Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights) by Pat Travers Wayne's staff pick is a boogie woogie cover of a blues song originally released by Little Walter in 1957. It is a well known party song which would not be politically correct today. There's some great guitar playing, and an excellent call-and-response in the live version. Ladies Night by Kool & The GangBrian's staff pick was a popular song in the dying days of disco. This song would see a revitalization of Kool & the Gang's popularity going into the early 80's. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pipeline '76 by Roger PowellIt is unusual to find surfing instrumentals during the early 80's, but this one was around at the time.

I think this is going to be my last Birthday Livestream, but I guess we'll find out next April. I had a visual theme for this one, the first half of the stream I had Pretty In Pink playing behind me and played all new wave CFNY retro and classic house, and for the second half I had the movie Juice playing behind me and played all late 80's / early 90's hip hop & rn'b throwbacks... very self indulgent! As I grew up my two older sisters were a constant source of musical guidance and inspiration, taking me to concerts, bringing me records from overseas school trips and keeping me up to speed on the hottest bands across the genre that was then called New Wave. Throughout our early years growing up in suburban Toronto, one radio station in particular was held high as the mythical point source from which all good music came. That station was CFNY, 102.1 FM. Following on from high school some years later, I managed to convince a local synthesizer shop to give me a job in sales. The shop owner became a dear friend, and the shop was quite popular with local dance music makers, in part because of the owners incredible collection of vintage synths. Channeling my paternally inherited passion for all things beeping and flashing, I got quite into learning every bit of gear I could get my hands on, with my mother eternally patient while an endless parade of boxes, wires and devices began to take over more and more rooms of our house. As luck would have it, one day the Roland product rep called, asking if I could demo their new DJ oriented stereo sampler to one of CFNYs on air crew, by bringing it to demo live on air during their midnight to 6AM weekend dance music broadcasts. At a time when the Toronto rave scene was exploding and so many new genres emerging, there was no shortage of amazing music to be played each week. To make a long story short the experience up close was eye opening. In the process I learned a lot about how to build and shape a six hour set through the wee hours to sunrise. This is episode 102 of Music For Small Audiences. A suitably extended set, it reflects to me the free spirit and genre exploration of those all night radio broadcast sets thirty years ago.

This is episode 102 of Music For Small Audiences. A suitably extended set, it reflects to me the free spirit and genre exploration of those all night radio broadcast sets thirty years ago.
DTTB Ep.66 - George StroumboulopoulosPunk Rock & PoliticsOne of the people I wanted to interview while planning this podcast series, without question was Strombo. This is another episode where I get to interview a remarkable interviewer. Like Alan Cross Official, or CFNY founder David Marsden. All of whom, shared some amazing stories in this series.George and I talked about 102.1 The Edge in this episode. He was colleagues with some of my mentors there, including the late Martin Streek Tribute. In fact the last time I saw George in person was at the Opera House for a celebration in honour of Martin. We also discussed the Danko Jones / Monster Truck issue, which I weighed in on, based on an episode done with Jon Harvey. This led in to an important chat about where we are in North American in 2022. Which only left me thinking, are politics in George's future? In an official capacity? With George out on the West Coast, I thought we were talking at 6pm PT, so I didn't even write out questions or set up the light I usually use for video podcasts. But with George, I'm kind of glad we just hit record and go.
Written by Brad McNally and Jim Bird in 1979, you'll hear Nash the Slash on electric violin in this jam by the CFNY 102.1 Band. This song is dedicated to the memory of Brad McNally. RIP.
In the inaugural episode of The Progressing Past of Modern Melodies, Toronto Mike, Brother Bill and Cam Gordon chat with special guest Ivar Hamilton about why some songs were played by CFNY and why some songs were left off the playlist.
People my age you're gonna LOVE this mix! Definitely if you're a fan of #depechemode #neworder #thecure (if you grew up in the Toronto area and listened to CFNY) Instead of my usual Soul Shack Summer Soundtrack, this year I'm doing a Cottage Mix Series, with the first installment being the Saturday afternoon vibes.Soul Shack fans should still enjoy (it's still based on my personal taste in music) which is why I'm posting it as the July mix and not as a special non-soul shack mix, but this one has a much wider audience, so please, if you appreciate this mix, share the link! Share it will all of your old high school facebook friends! Josie Dye is more than just, "a normal blonde girl," as she puts it. I invited her to be my first guest because she is the person who inspired me to become a radio host; I used to listen to her on CFNY in Toronto in the early 2000s where she was a host for fifteen years.Josie speaks about the women who have inspired her like her mother and Maie Pauts, and great advice from mentors like Ross Winters, JJ Johnston and the team at Indie88.Josie also touches on maternity leave and the challenges she faced in trying to become a morning show host.https://indie88.com/the-josie-dye-show/Josie just launched a new podcast inspired by her son Cole called Love & Special Needs: https://josiedye.podbean.com Follow the Women In Media Podcast on social media:Twitter: @WomenInMediaPod Instagram: @WomenInMediaPodFacebook.com/WomenInMediaPod
