On this episode of our Scene in San Diego podcast, we focus on what California’s sweeping new stay-at-home order means for San Diego County’s restaurant scene.Once again, pandemic-era restrictions for restaurants have changed – and we will break down those changes on our show.Joining our conversation is Jason McLeod, chef and partner of local hospitality powerhouse group, CH Projects, which runs some of San Diego’s most high-profile restaurants and bars (to name a few local favorites: Morning Glory; Born & Raised; Ironside; Soda & Swine; Craft & Commerce; Polite Provisions). McLeod shares how the stay-at-home order will impact CH Projects and how the eateries will adapt during a month when – in non-pandemic times – would typically be a busy time for restaurants with holiday parties, seasonal offerings, and banquets. For more content from The Scene, visit this website. Welcome back and happy holidays! We are wrapping up 2019 with two year-end episodes to discuss the best food, the coolest trends, the biggest headlines, and the saddest goodbyes that we featured on the show this year. In part two, the team discusses some of the food predictions that national studies and media said would be big in 2019, including: cannabis and CBD infused everything, hard seltzers like White Claw, Taiwanese cheese tea, plant-based eating, and mushrooms. We look at the past year to see if any of these trends made their way over to San Diego. Plant-based meals definitely had a huge impact at San Diego Magazine, as we dedicated our entire upcoming January 2020 issue to healthy eating and finding new vegetarian and vegan restaurants around the city. We also wanted to provide the update that we did find a place in San Diego that serves cheese tea, Happy Lemon in Kearny Mesa and Eastlake. The team also talks about what trends they saw appear in San Diego’s dining scene in 2019, as well as what they are predicting for 2020. Some things to look out for are craft sake, more comfortable chairs and carpeted restaurants, and the decline of the hazy IPA. Also in this episode, we take a look at our most downloaded episodes. What episode do you think it was? The team plus David casts their votes for their favorite guests of the year including Steven Yeng of OB Noodle House, the “Urchin King,” Peter Halmay, Brandon Zanavich from The Friendly, and more. Lastly, everyone provides their own Holiday Survival Guide to getting the most out of the festive season in San Diego, with tips like hitting up Miracle on 30th Street, a Christmas pop-up bar hosted by Polite Provisions, or checking out the cheesy holiday lighting competition between Fall Brewing Co. and Beerfish. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. You can give us your recommendations for Two People, $50, let us know who you’d like to hear featured as a guest on the podcast, or ask Troy a question.
Tis the season to be jolly! In this episode, the boys talk all about gifts both in the workplace and their private lives. Before getting Polite at Polite Provisions, they first talk about receiving holiday bonuses from employers. Is there an expectation of receiving a bonus from a company after putting in hard work and labor? To add on, they also discuss their opinions on approaching their loved ones about getting them gifts. Is it better to surprise them or just ask what would they like to narrow down their choices? Let us know what you all think in the comments! #nothingtolosepodcast

It's once more time to play Five Questions, this time with my good friend Erick Castro, fellow entrepreneur and owner of the James Beard Award-nominated craft cocktail bar Polite Provisions. Today, we focus on deep questions. Do humans have an inherent right to gun ownership? Is God real? Which culture gets it most right? Are dreams meaningful? And what is nostalgia all about, anyway? This is a good one. Strap in!
In today’s Happy Half Hour, hosts Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson, along with producer Archana Ram are chatting about restaurant news, like a new cocktail shop in North Park and a collaboration between Regents Pizzeria and Mastiff Sausage Company that will benefit the charity No Kid Hungry. Today’s guest is Stephen Kurpinsky, the spirits and beer director at Level2, the hip cocktail-focused bar at George’s at the Cove. One of my closest friends on this planet is Erick Castro, one of the world's great craft cocktail bartenders, owner of the James Beard Award-nominated bar Polite Provisions, and an all-around great guy. We sat down to chat about his new documentary, what it's like to own businesses, and why alcohol is just so damn good.
As if Polite Provisions, Boilermaker NYC, and the Simple Serve consulting group weren't enough, California's Erick Castro is now becoming a film auteur. His successful video series Bartender at Large has now transformed into a feature length film. Erick is a monumental mind in the shaping of cocktail culture and hospitality trends. But more importantly, he's connecting with the bar community on the road and in studio to shed light on the problems plaguing this industry. Part journalistic endeavor and part humanitarian effort, Erick's film and series are only a modest piece of his career. The desire to learn and take on new projects in unavoidable. We chat the Beatles, college, Marvel, and more....
In todays episode we chat about: focusing on hospitality; the importance of culture; why you need to treat every moment of your career like your building a resume; treating it like you own it; staying hungry for knowledge; the one question you should be asking during all of your interviews. Erick Castro initially built his cocktail empire at San Francisco's Rickhouse and Bourbon & Branch by searching for obscure recipes, methods and ingredients that originated prior to Prohibition. His beverage programs have been place on some of the nation's most coveted lists, including Esquire's Best Bars in America, Food & Wine's “World's Top Bars” and countless nominations at the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards in New Orleans, and was recognized by the StarChefs organization as “Rising Star Mixologist” in 2010.In 2013, Castro partnered up with Southern California's hospitality collective, CH Projects, to launch Polite Provisions –which quickly received accolades such as Imbibe magazine's Cocktail Bar of the Year 2014 and Food & Wine magazine's Best New Bars. In 2014, he teamed up with the team behind Cocktail Kingdom to create Boilermaker in New York City, where it quickly earned a reputation. Also, in 2014, Castro, co-created Follow The Liter, an irreverent series of cocktail tutorials. On top of all this Castro manages the PossessedBySpirits.com blog and his newest project BartenderAtLarge.com, which he tells us more about at the end of the episode!

This time on San Diego Political Podcast I sat down and talked to Josh Board at Polite Provisions and we spend the better part of an hour talking about movie and politics. Josh ate a massive pork sandwich and was a pleasure to hang out with. He doesn’t think movies play an important role politically while I think they do. Oh and about 3 minutes in we talked about the Equal Time for more info on that go HERE. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Time Listen Share Talk San Diego Political Podcast Movie edition.
