The Missouri State Highway Patrol says mid-Missouri roads remain treacherous this morning, and they're urging you to stay off the road. Columbia Police are also urging you to slow down, saying hazardous driving conditions have caused them to implement the delayed crash report protocol. Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) president Matt Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri". Mr. Nichols discusses CPD's delayed crash report protocol and also weighed in on efforts to recall Columbia first ward councilman Nick Knoth. It's been 33 years since a Columbia city council member was recalled. Recall organizers say Knoth's job as a lobbyist with the Missouri Realtors is a conflict of interest with his elected position. Councilman Knoth disputes that, as does the CPOA. CPOA president Matt Nichols is urging listeners to vote no on the recall, saying Councilman Knoth is being targeted by those who support defunding and even abolishing the police:

Richard Mack is the former sheriff of Graham County, Arizona and a political activist. He is known for his role in a successful lawsuit brought against the federal government of the United States which alleged that portions of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act violated the United States Constitution. He is a former lobbyist for Gun Owners of America (GOA) and a two-time candidate for United States Congress. Mack is also the founder of (CSPOA), and established the "County Sheriff Project" movement, both of whom reaffirm what they claim is the constitutional power to refuse to enforce federal laws.

The Columbia Police Department is currently 41 officers short, according to CPD assistant chief Jeremiah Hunter. Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) president Matt Nichols is concerned about that number and about staffing levels. Mr. Nichols joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" this morning, telling listeners that one detective left the department because of the way the community is leaning. Mr. Nichols and CPOA are also disappointed because Columbia's city council has not allocated any federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars as premium/hazard pay for law enforcement officers and other essential workers who were unable to work from home during the COVID pandemic. Mr. Nichols tells listeners that one-time money would help retain Columbia Police officers, as well as bus drivers and garbage collectors. Mayor Barbara Buffaloe has noted Columbia's city council approved a fiscal year 2024 budget in September that saw an across-the-board increase in pay, and an increase in starting salary for police officers. While Mr. Nichols acknowledges those two points, he says inflation has eaten a lot of that raise:

Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) president Matt Nichols says his officers don't feel appreciated and don't feel valued. Columbia's city council voted this week to approve a resolution allocating $25-million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars. The CPOA is not happy because the council has not allocated any ARPA dollars as premium/hazard pay for law enforcement officers and other essential workers who were unable to work from home during the COVID pandemic. The CPOA says these city employees risked their safety and health for everyone in Columbia, adding that the hazard incentive would have demonstrated that the community recognizes their ongoing sacrifice. CPOA president Nichols also blasted the defund the police movement, telling listeners that "there's a lot of money in hating the police":

Attorney Donald Weaver will address the council tonight and is expected to call on them to support law enforcement. The CPOA says criminals in Columbia have become more emboldened, noting a suspect recently allegedly tried to rape women on the MKT trail in broad daylight. The CPOA also says “pedestrians downtown and elsewhere can routinely be seen harassing others, littering and even defecating on the streets and sidewalks.” CPOA President Matt Nichols joined us live on "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", and praises police chief Geoff Jones and city manager De'Carlon Seewood. He's critical of the council vote on FUSUS and blasts what he describes as "crazy activists" who speak at council meetings, saying they bully the council:

This is Episode 11 of @lets_grab_a_cup podcast. Naval Officer, Police Lieutenant, and President of the Police Officers Association. This is an interview with James Foster (who goes by Jimmy) who spent a lifetime of service to his community and to those he worked around. Jimmy Foster grew up in Long Beach, CA in a family of Law Enforcement Officers. His father and brothers all joined the Long Beach Police Department and Jimmy ultimately followed in those footsteps and joined the Long Beach Police Department after an 8 year career in the Navy. As a young man, Jimmy was accepted into the Naval Academy and graduated as an Officer, ultimately placed in command of his own crew. Jimmy had one idea on how to influence the people he worked with, and that was to show them how much he cared about them. This mindset continued throughout his career and on into Law Enforcement. Jimmy is known as one of the best leaders in the Long Beach organization because he always put others' first and provided mentorship through respect. I had the pleasure of sharing with Jimmy just how much so many of the people he worked with were influenced by him and the way he treated each and every one of them. It's not every day that you get to hear the impact you have made, and I am proud to call Jimmy a mentor and a friend. This podcast is brought to you by Sturgeon Wellness (Intentionality, Authenticity, Resiliency). I am fully invested in the idea of a transparent, authentic, and intentional type of leader. I believe that we can do better for those we serve and those who serve along-side us. Let's step up by being vulnerable. Vulnerability is the true super-power. My goal is to find the leadership values within each one of us and really dive deep to bring it to the forefront. Find more on my website - Sturgeonwellness.com or letsgrabacup.com. Quotes 06:41 "Police unions are the only reason why we have professional standards. We're the ones that advocate for more training; we're the ones that advocate for more education because we recognize that the job is very very difficult. And if there are barriers to entry, you're going to get better applicants and better folks that are out there serving our public." 07:47 "We don't defend bad behavior. If an officer's out there violating somebody's rights, they're not one of us. But if they're out there doing their job and something doesn't look good on a camera, but they're doing it in policy and they're doing exactly what they should be doing to keep the public safe, we have an obligation as a society to stand up for them." 11:21 "And so this is directly asking the question to our citizens, do you want to defund the police? And this was in June of last year. Our citizens, by a 65% margin, said absolutely not, we want to fund our police. And they voted to renew that crime tax for 10 years." 20:05 "In a time where we have violent crimes and you're seeing failures of leadership all across this nation by police chiefs that are castigating officers for political expediency, we have to have citizens that stand up and demand that we hold those chiefs accountable." SUMMARY In this episode of the National Police Association Podcast, Sgt Betsy interviews Manny Ramirez, President of the Fort Worth Police Association. Author, speaker and former Sheriff Richard Mack has served in a wide variety of roles over the course of his nearly twenty year career in law enforcement, which began in Provo, Utah. After 11 years at Provo PD, Mack decided to return to his childhood turf in Arizona and run for Graham County Sheriff. His campaign took off and he was elected in 1988. During his tenure, federal officers informed the sheriffs of the state that they would be required to enforce the so-called “Brady Bill” and run background checks at their expense under the law. In 1994, Mack and six other sheriffs from across the country, challenged the constitutionality of the Brady Bill and ultimately, fought it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, where they won a monumental decision for freedom. Three years later, in a landmark 5-4 split decision based on the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Mack won his case. He has also been named Elected Official of the Year by the Arizona-New Mexico Coalition of Counties in 1994, received the NRA Law Officer of the Year, inducted into the NRA Hall of Fame, 1995 Cicero Award, Samuel Adams Leadership Award from the Local Sovereignty Coalition, and Gun Owners of America Defender of the Second Amendment Award. He was sheriff for two terms until 1997. Sheriff Mack currently teaches, consults and empowers people around the country and around the world. He started the Constitutional Sheriffs & Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) which educates both citizens as well as sheriffs and other peace officers on the Constitution and their limitations of power, according to the Constitution. https://cspoa.org/ Get your news from Ground News ground.news/gml Need someone to talk to? So which one should I listen to? 09:22 "Get on a board, get on a commission. Get involved because now it's more important than just how many police officers do we have on the streets. This sets the tone and the culture for how our children are going to be raised in this society." 19:57 "The police officers that are signing up, one day they can be the next generation leaders that turn it around. We spent about an hour chatting about San Diego Police Department and there roll in our community. Their mayoral endorsement and why they endorsed whom they did. And how the POA see’s itself when compared to other labor organizations, like the Service Employee International Union (SEIU). Also we spent a fair amount of time on pensions.
