Today we are joined by extra special guest Hrishikesh Hirway as we confront our many subconscious fears: public performance, MURDER CLOWNS, bad hair days, and more! If you’ve passed by the Chess Club storefront in Portland’s Old Town recently, you may have wondered what it sells. A small label in the window gives you a hint — “global magazines.” The store carries hundreds of publications from around the world, with topics ranging from queer periodicals to art and design quarterlies. Owners Andrew Simon and Christy Lai have said that they want the store to serve as a meeting place and conversation starter for people in search of offline connection. Simon and Lai join us to talk about creating physical community in a digital world.

In 1977 Marc Miller, bored with the Chess Club at Illinois State University, made his way to the Strategic Games Club…the rest they say is history.Ok, for those of you that have no idea who Marc Miller is or why the fact that Chess is boring matters I'll go a little deeper.Marc Miller, Frank Chadwick, John Harshman, and Loren Wiseman created the roleplaying game Traveller, that's with 2 L's by the way, in 1977 born out of games at that Strategic Games Club.Traveller is the quintessential sci-fi roleplaying game, building on the science fiction novels of the 1960 and 70's and coming onto the scene just after Dungeons and Dragons and before Star Wars.My first dive into Traveller started in 1983 with the Classic Traveller Starter Edition. I still have the boxed set buried somewhere in a pile of old games. I remember stumbling across it in my friendly local gaming store and being taken by the cover art. Three heroes wearing golden armor with a space ship flying overhead.I had just watched the Return of the Jedi a few days earlier in the theatre so I had to get the game, and boy it did not disappoint. What disappointed me was all my friends. I couldn't find anyone to play it with me. But that was ok, because the character generation portion of the book was so good it was like a solo game all on its own. I made so many characters…or at least tried to make so many characters, a lot of them didn't make it. But we will come back to that.Fast forward a few decades and finally I get to run a Traveller game.It was a blast and if you want to hear all about it listen to our “Anatomy of a Campaign” series.Christina, do you remember the first time you ever heard of Traveller?[kick to Christina]There are a lot of versions of Traveller out there, many of them still being played, and while we might discuss bits and pieces from the other versions, we are going to focus this discussion mostly on the new caretaker of the Traveller Legacy, Mongoose Publishing and their 2nd Edition Version of Traveller.Christina, before we dive into Traveller give us the disclaimer.[Kick to Christina] – We aren't getting paid for this. They didn't give us any games or material or support. We actually played the game, a lot.Now that the official stuff is out of the way, what do you like best about the system?

On today's episode, Tom Campbell (CEG's Community Manager) is joined by Carolyn Starks, a former Pomona and Bates admissions officer and Associate Director of College Counseling at Oakwood School (North Hollywood, CA) at the time of recording, to talk about extracurricular activities and the activities list on college applications. This week we talked to Heavy Metal Chess Club, a midwest-emo band from Philly. Each member of the band has their niche in terms of interests, but they come together to make some sick-ass music. Once Clara and Hammer discovered their mutual love for emo music, Alex and Jackson were invited to the band to bring some different musical perspectives. Their most recent singles give us a taste of what's to come as they continue to develop their skills as writers, musicians, and bandmates. They're headed into a busy 2024 going to the studio in January and booking shows for their weekends on break. Find more from them @ Spotify Instagram
Adam Chase has been playing music all his life. He and his brother, Matthew Chase, headed the band Black Eyed Susan from high school through college that caught the attention of so many ears. This allowed them the opportunity to play with artists like Aerosmith, Crosby, Still & Nash, Wyclef Jean and many more. Since then he developed talent as music director, composer, and band leader and continues to create incredible tribute projects like Jazz is Phish, The James Brown Dance Party, and A Family Affair (tribute to Sly & The Family Stone). He also created Dab Sessions to celebrate improvisation. These projects have allowed him to collaborate with some of the best musicians of our era including Jeff Sipe, Adam Deitch, Domi and JD Beck, Jonathan Scales, Jeff Coffin, Felix Pastorius, Clyde Stubblefield, Dennis Chambers, Billy Martin, and Claude Coleman, Jr. The list goes on.After sitting down to talk with him it became clear to me that he has been able to work with so many greats, not just because he's a great musician (and he is), but also because he has focused on developing and cultivating relationships. It's clear he's not just in it for himself. Check out his latest band, Chess Club, where he and Danny Darress inject humor into well crafted melodies and rhythms. Learn more about him at https://www.creationsofadam.com/Find him on IG @adamchasemusic and @chessclubrulezFollow Drummer Mindset on IG @drummermindset or on YouTube @drummermindsetI invite you to rate, review, follow, and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
Episode 181 of That Was Disappointing is Live. Our kids are totally gonna dominate Chess Club. Today's Topic: Youth Sports.Wanna guess the odds Lex mentions Youth BJJ?Join Art, Lex and Producer Kenny (featuring the lovely Kerrianne), as they chat about living vicariously through their children, hoping they'll be the next Shohei Ohtani, Patrick Mahomes, Gordon Ryan, etc. To be fair, isn't it the hope of every parent that their children have more success than they did. I mean, it's gonna be tough to outperform an award-winning podcast (*coughs*), but we have faith in our kiddos.Hopefully, their biggest accomplishment isn't throwing us into a nursing home someday. #extrajellopleaseTWD Tip of the Week: The Sandlot > Little Giants > The Mighty Ducks

Welcome to Chess Club! Chess and roguelikes seem like a strange match, but in this episode Bryan and Josh explore two such games that use the tried and true mechanics of chess and mash them up with the roguelike video game genre (and a few other genres as well). The first game discussed, Shotgun King, is a run based game where you play as a single piece (the black king) and instead of taking out the enemy pieces with traditional chess moves, you have a shotgun. A simple, elegant premise with a perfect implementation. The next game we talk about is Chessplosion, an arcade action puzzle game where you drop chess piece bombs to create chain reactions and trap opponents. Both have a unique and interesting take on using the widely known mechanics of chess towards a novel gameplay end. So pull up a chair and have a seat across the board from Bryan and Josh as they talk you through this video game Chess Club.Three Word Reviews:Shotgun King:Bryan: Flip the BoardJosh: Premise Pulled OffChessplosion: Bryan: Super Chess BrothersJosh: Jousting with Bombs
