Since the rise of the Chicano Movement in the late 60s, Chicano artists have used a variety of mediums to express historical counter-narratives, encourage political activism, and educate communities. Fifty-three years ago on April 22, 1970, in San Diego, California the residents of Logan Heights, alongside a coalition comprised of hundreds of students, community activists, Brown Berets, and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) collectively staged a successful 12-day people's land takeover to thwart the construction of a California Highway Patrol substation on land where the city of San Diego had promised to build a public park for barrio residents. Thanks in part to the protest, the city of San Diego agreed to acquire the site from the state and develop it into a park for the Chicano community. In 2023, Chicano Park is widely regarded as a monument to the self-determination and self-empowerment of Chicano people in the U.S. The concrete pillars that uphold the Coronado Bridge that once sliced and divided the community are now adorned with the iconic murals that have made Chicano Park an anchor for the community's strong Chicano identity and its revolutionary spirit and history. Although while Chicano Park has grown and expanded alongside the neighborhood and received a National Historic Landmark designation from the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2017, the park and its illustrious collection of intricate murals continued to lack an official space dedicated to documentation and preservation of its history until Chicano Park opened the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center (CPMCC) last Fall. Unsurprisingly, Chicano artists have continued this legacy of Chicanismo into today's contemporary artistic and political movements—taking the moment to express political autonomy, cultural solidarity, and pride in being of Indigenous descent. Lucas Cruz, Chairman of the Chicano Park Steering Committee joins Step Off! Radio to discuss the Chicano Park Museum & Cultural Center, the struggle to make the museum a reality, and what the museums means to the residents of Barrio Logan and Logan Heights.

A hidden gem beaming with creativity barely scrapes the surface of who Sal Gonzalezz is. Born and raised in San Diego, Sal's artistic abilities go back as far as he can remember. Paired with his curiosity for what the world around him had to offer, Sal found himself exploring San Diego and Tijuana endlessly, which not only contributed to everlasting memories, but showed him that there is art in everything. Although Sal's entry into the workforce began at a young age, the relationship between him and his art never drifted apart. What is most humbling about Sal Gonzalezz is the way he carries himself with respect, honor, and the ambition to never stop learning. In a world so disconnected from another, Sal continues to remain as a representation of community and that good, inspiring people are still out there. His way with words paint pictures in your head about his childhood and experiences in Mexico and make you feel like you are a part of the Stage Crew during the Chicano Park celebrations. Ultimately, Sal Gonzalezz has impacted San Diego's subcultures, art scene, and city as a whole and he did it simply by being himself. His work should be displayed in distinguished museums and galleries all over the world, yet is perfectly okay without that; a quality unrecognized now. Sal Gonzalezz is most importantly, a wonderful husband, father, and friend who values genuine human interaction and reciprocity of its highest value. We celebrate the life, journey, and resilience of a modern day renaissance man; a man with a heart of gold, with a mind so human and creative, and a being so free. We celebrate and cherish, the one and only, Sal Gonzalezz.

This is The Digital Story Podcast #777, Feb. 9, 2021. Today's theme is "Protect Your Camera Gear from Theft" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Smash and grab is becoming more commonplace, and we can't take anything for granted when it comes to protecting ourselves and our cameras. On today's show I will share a few real life stories to illustrate this point, then review the steps we can take to circumvent criminal acts against us. Thanks for joining me. Digital Photography Podcast 777 Protect Your Camera Gear from Theft I want to begin by sharing a couple stories that illustrate how bold thrives have become. Gas Station Smash and Grab After our Bodega Bay workshop in 2019, one of our photographers stopped at a gas station on his way to the airport. His camera gear was in the back of a rental SUV that he locked when he went inside to get a couple things. In just those few minutes, thieves smashed the back window of his rental and took all of his gear. Photographers Robbed While Stuck in SF Traffic, Lose $7,000 in Camera Gear As reported on Petapixel. This may be the modern-day equivalent of a stagecoach robbery: a pair of photographers were just brazenly robbed while they were sitting in traffic in San Francisco. Robbers smashed their rear window and stole a bag filled with $7,000 in gear, and it was all caught on camera. ABC7 reports that husband-and-wife real estate photographers Ben and Masha of Home Shots were waiting to get onto the Interstate 80 onramp at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon after finishing a photo shoot near Dolores Park. As the video above shows, a dark Honda then pulled up alongside the photographers' Prius. A man jumped out, quickly smashed the rear window, grabbed the equipment bag that was in the trunk, hopped back in the car, and sped off. The whole incident lasted about 10 seconds from start to finish, and it was caught on camera from behind by a Tesla driver named Alex, who then pulled over and exchanged contact info with the photographers. Masha, who had been driving the car, had noticed the dark car following them after they had left the photoshoot. Ben estimates that his stolen gear, which included a camera, lens, drone, and gimbal, was worth around $7,000. Robbers Target Photo Shoot in San Diego Park, Shoot Man in Struggle As reported on Petapixel. A man was shot in a San Diego park this weekend after a group approached and attempted to steal the camera equipment being used. FOX 5 reports that a 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were doing a photoshoot at around 6:49 p.m. on Saturday in Chicano Park of the Barrio Logan neighborhood when they were approached by six young people -- three males and three females in their late teens or early twenties. When the group attempted to steal the gear, the two men fought back. "A struggle ensued and during the struggle, one of the male suspects pulled out a gun and shot multiple rounds at the victims," San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims tells FOX 5. Luckily, both of the victims escaped with their lives -- the suspects shot the 24-year-old in the lower abdomen and gave the 25-year-old a bloody lip before getting into a black Honda sedan and driving away. The gunshot victim was taken to an area hospital with a wound that isn't considered to be life-threatening. San Diego gang detectives are now investigating the attempted robbery and assault. Steps You Can Take to Protect Yourself Nimble Photography is more than just traveling light to relieve tired shoulders, it's also practice to keep you inconspicuous while enjoying the hobby you love. My current recommendation of traveling with just a smartphone and a compact camera provides you with tremendous capability and no camera bag. Camera Insurance can often be purchased as a rider to your existing home owners or renters policy and can help you replace gear if criminals successfully strike. Keep Your Gear with You, even while driving is a necessary practice these days. I never leave my valuables in the car, even if I'm just dashing into the local convenience mart. While driving, I keep my stuff in the front seat by my side. Be Urban Smart - Stay aware of your surroundings, stand tall, avoid vulnerable locations, always have a exit plan, and listen to your inner voice. Lock Up Your Gear at Home - I have both a safe and a locking cabinet to slow down thieves who may be contemplating a crime against me. With a little luck and by following these practices, you should be able to avoid the misfortune that I described at the top of the show. Be careful out there! Royal Photographic Society makes 165 years of its Journal free online You can read the article here on DP Review. The Royal Photographic Society has digitized its archive and made issues of its magazine, the RPS Journal, free to read online. Visitors to the Society's website will be able to read issues dating right back to the first magazine that was published on 3rd March 1853. The frequency of publication has varied slightly over the years, but the RPS claims The Journal is the longest continuously published photographic periodical in the world. The current format of the magazine is published six times a year, and the free archive covers 1853 to 2018, said to be over 30,000 pages of searchable articles packaged into 158 volumes of publications. The RPS covers a full range of photographic interests from professional, technical and scientific to pure enthusiast and artistic, and that breadth is reflected in the content of The Journal. It was the end of 1800's before pictures appeared -- and even then they are drawings of the photographs due to be shown in an exhibition -- and members had to wait until the 1920s before photographs were able to be printed on the pages. The Journal's archive is a fantastic record of photographic technology as well as of changing styles and the growth of popularity of photography as a pass-time as well as a profession. Urth Lens Mount Adapters for Vintage Optics to Mirrorless Cameras I've been testing various lens mount adapters and wanted to mention to you one of my favorites: the Urth/Gobe line of Lens Mount Adapters. They are affordable, usually around $32, very well made, and you can find combinations that are difficult to locate elsewhere. For example, I bought a Pentax DA mount to Fujifilm X-Mount adapter that works fantastic. Vintage lenses on mirrorless cameras are a great way to get the creative juices going. Likewise, we also discuss her tenure as an instructor teaching La Danza Mexi’cayotl, traditional Azteca-Chichimeca Dance, and how her career in academia and involvement community organizing would ultimately play into here affinity for writing and inspire to her write a book dedicated to the history of Chicano Park. In addition, we also discuss the importance of representation in children's literature and the significance that the legacy of Chicano Park still maintains fifty years after its founding. This is Enrique Morones from BuenHombre.org and MagnificentMujer.org podcasts.   This week we have a “Buen Hombre” like no other, an “Art-ivist”, and a person very well known in certain circles, but who should be known in all circles, all the way from the great country of Peru, but who has has spent most of his life in San Diego, California, my good friend, Mario Torero. Mario Torero is a very well known Chicano muralist, artist, and just a great humanitarian. Some of his best works as far as murals in San Diego and Southern California are: “The Eyes of Picasso” painted, then demolished when the buildings, whose walls they graced disappeared then reappearing again all over San Diego County during the last 4 decades... And perhaps the most well known in the media is the “I’m Not A Minority” mural in Los Angeles. You also might be familiar with his painting of Cesar Chavez, or his iconic Chicano Park murals.  Over the last 50 years he has been bringing his passion for “Art-ivism” and the Chicano Art movement all over California, to other cities in the United States and even in travels abroad to join other Artivist causes in Peru, Mexico, Germany, the Czech Republic, Japan, China, Cuba, Spain and more to come in the future.  Most recently I joined him in Berlin for the thirtieth anniversary of the  Fall of the Berlin Wall last November, where he shared the story of the Chicano Art Movement and the Chicano Park Community Revolution with audiences there alongside myself and two other local Chicano Activists, artist/muralist Enrique Chiu, and artist/architect Adrian Luz. If you have never heard this name, or if Mario is an old friend of yours, I equally hope that you share my wonder in this “Art-ivists” entertaining adventures and his never ending quest to explore himself, his world and to push past boundaries in possibilities, and meaning, beyond any borders.   Like me, and our listeners, he is driven by his love of all people, Patchamama (the Earth) and a great passion for life and hope.  We hope this passion touches your hearts today.  Please share this podcast with your friends and family. Please subscribe to this podcast on your favorite podcast platform. Join our email list.  Mario Torero has been a supporter of Gente Unida since our inception. He is offering to support our humanitarian causes by donating a portion of sales of posters and T shirts during the months of April and May to Gente Unida. In celebration of Chicano Park’s 50th anniversary and Gente Unida’s deep connection with this legendary place, Mario Torero is donating a portion of all sales from his posters and limited editions to GenteUnida’s Humanitarian causes. A portion of profits from all purchases of Chicano Park Day posters from past years will be donated to the Chicano Park Museum. As a candidate running on the ballot for the Peace and Freedom Party of California, Cortés joins a crowded field of candidates which includes Democratic candidates Ammar Campa-Najjar and Marisa Calderon. Republican candidates Carl DeMaio, Darrell Issa, Brian Jones, and Nathan Wilkins, as well as Independent candidates Helen Horvath, Lucinda Jahn, and Henry Ota. Since 2016, José Cortés has been on the front lines of the fight against police brutality, concentration camps, and the exploitation of low-income tenants. He has helped organize for national liberation in Barrio Logan alongside Chicano Park defenders, he stands in solidarity with the struggle for socialism in Venezuela and Cuba, and he supports the right of self-determination and reparations for the people of Hawaii, Puerto Rico and all nations oppressed by U.S. imperialism and colonialism. We had the chance to catch up with José, and discuss the campaign he and his team have been running in the fiftieth district, talk about what platforms he’s running on, what stances he would take as an elected member of Congress, discuss the nuances of running as a socialist candidate here in the United States. As well as discuss the unique challenges the campaign poses as the lone Chicano candidate in the race running in a district that historically has been a conservative stronghold and has not historically been known for any sort of progressive representation. The Brown Berets as an organization can trace their origins back to East Los Angeles in the late 1960's at the height of the Chicano Civil-Rights Movement. At the time, many young Chicanos were struggling to make sense of their own cultural identity and were faced with daily acts of discrimination and even violence. Founded by David Sanchez in wake of the 1968 East L.A. Student Walkouts the Brown Berets were formed with the intention to help the Chicano community, specifically organizing against police brutality, inadequate public schools, farm worker’s struggles as well as anti-war activism. And since their founding numerous autonomous chapters have sprung up across the United States. The National in Barrio Logan were one of several antonymous chapter founded during the 1970’s and remains one of the most prominent and active chapters operating in the country today.  For close to fifty years the National Brown Berets de Aztlán have been defenders of the Barrio and vanguards of Chicano Park. It’s no coincidence that the history and politics of the Brown Berets can be seen across the walls of Chicano Park, adorning a myriad of murals painted throughout the years. In April of 1970, alongside a coalition of students, community activists, Barrio residents and others from nearby neighborhoods, through militant force and occupation the National Brown Berets de Aztlán helped liberate the land that would eventually become Chicano Park. After a twelve-day occupation, the eventual liberation of Chicano Park was not only a defining moment in Chicano history and the City of San Diego; it was also a defining moment that helped cement the Brown Berets as the paramilitary arm of the Chicano Power movement throughout the rest of the 1970s. Now, almost fifty years later Chicano Park is not only a monument to Chicano empowerment and self-determination; it has served as the home base for the Brown Berets. For this very special episode of Step Off! Radio we had the pleasure of interviewing members of the National Brown Berets de Aztlán, recorded right in the heart of Barrio Logan’s historic Chicano Park. We spoke with Unit Commander Eddie Alvarez, Officer of Aztlán Desiree McFadden and Officer of Aztlán Mike Geck. We had a chance to discuss the origins of the chapter, the role the Berets played in the founding of Chicano Park, their dedication to the defense & advancement of Barrio Logan & Chicano people, the Beret’s work within the community that they are helping address, as well as what the future holds for the National Brown Berets de Aztlán. We want to remind listeners that this interview was recorded at Chicano Park, a week prior in preparation of Chicano Park Day, the sounds and noises that you hear in the background are the sounds of community.

California Groundbreakers

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2018 89:39

Art has changed people's minds, shifted public opinions and made history. In our first “Groundbreakers Q&A,” we're talking with four people who create art that does just that.

The Chicano Movement, known as "El Movimiento," was a major effort in the 1960s and 1970s to extend Mexican-American civil rights and empowerment. A major component of El Movimiento was the artists. They created a socio-political movement that highlighted the plight of Mexicans in the U.S., they gave birth to a Chicano world view and, they generated a cultural renaissance, particularly here in California.

Think of the famous murals in San Francisco's Mission District and in San Diego’s Chicano Park. The creation of art collectives like the Mexican-American Liberation Art Front in Oakland, Mujeres Muralistas in San Francisco, and the Royal Chicano Air Force in Sacramento. In today's politically-charged times, with DACA and ICE raids and National Guard troops summoned to the border and gentrification impacting Chicano/Latino neighborhoods, El Movimiento is getting a second wind. We're talking with four major artists who made that movement happen, and have inspired a new generation of activist artists in California.

THE GROUNDBREAKERS

* Juana Alicia, artist, former field organizer for the United Farmworkers Union, and founder of the True Colors Mural Project at Berkeley City College
* Malaquias Montoya, founder of the Mexican-American Liberation Art Front and UC Davis professor, teaching both in the department of Art and the department of Chicana/o Studies.

 * Juanishi Orosco and Esteban Villa, founding members of the Royal Chicano Air Force and still-active artists (their latest work with the RCAF is on display at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento

We dedicate this podcast to Chicano activist, musician, father, and beloved community member of San Diego and beyond, Ramon "Chunky" Gonzalez. We play the song "Chicano Park" by his band Los Alacranes in his honor. His daughter, activist-mother Esmi Sanchez, joins us with Michelle, Judi, Yvette, Christine, and Cecilia. Through a platica and healing circle, we discuss the aftermath of the presidential election and its affects upon ourselves, our children, and our communities and how we can work together with the intention to create community power and cultivate radical love. We close by sharing resources about how to dismantle and fight racism, especially as they relate to populations which are the most vulnerable, as well as tips about how to protest safely with our children in the streets.

Most days, at least a couple of tour groups can be spotted making their way through Chicano Park, the park tucked under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in Barrio Logan. Folks stop to snap selfies in front of the colorful, Mexican-themed murals as they learn about the park's history and significance. Each mural has a story. Each artist who helped paint the murals has a story. And of course, the park itself has a story that's packed with politics, turmoil and community pride. For now, volunteer tour guides - local educators, historians, longtime neighborhood residents and the Chicano Park muralists themselves – are the keepers of the park's history. But those guides are getting older and some have already passed away. That's part of what's behind the push to turn a currently vacant, city-owned building that borders the park into a museum where the park's narrative can be stored and accessed by the public for decades to come. In episode three of Culturecast, VOSD's new podcast covering the intersection of art and gentrification in Barrio Logan, I dig deep into the movement to open the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.

I asked myself what San Diego political issue is both under talked about and very important to the mayor’s race? The answer for me is Barrio Logan zoning regulations. Now before you yawn think about this … While at first blush zoning regulation don’t seem that exciting, these rules determine what you can do with your land, what business are allowed in a community, even how many people are allowed to live in a neighborhood. So zoning has a direct and very important impact on your life. Barrio Logan is a community created when the 5 freeway was built, bisecting Logan Heights. Under much protest and cries the freeway went through. Then the Coronado Bridge was built and sparking loud protests witch eventually lead to the creation of Chicano Park. Now the community there wants to create some industrial free zones. There is a lot of industry in Barrio Logan, lots of heavy industry. The most notable is the maritime industries. They pay a lot in tax, employ lots of people, and are very important to the city outside of the barrio. This issue is making its way into mayoral election politics is some very interesting ways. The issue has a racial component that could be part of the reason the next mayor wins or why his opponent loses. Barrio Logan was born fighting. And the people from there don’t back down, they are used to long fights. This time on the Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast I sat down with Georgette Gomez from the Environmental Health Coalition. She’s a Barrio Logan native. She has a lot of interesting things to say about her almost decade long fight to make changes to the Barrio Logan zoning rules. Agree or not you’ve got to respect her zeal and commitment.
