EPISODE #105 – Marine Airpower, the Battle of Ramadi, and Flying the Beast: The F-35 and MV-22 Strap in and arm hot, folks—this one's a burner. Welcome to Episode 105 of the Lessons from the Cockpit show! I'm your host Mark Hasara, retired KC-135 pilot, author of Tanker Pilot, and a lifelong aviation nut with over 60 years of airpower obsession. This week, I sit down with Colonel Byron “Shrek” Sullivan, a retired United States Marine Corps airpower warrior. And trust me—this is the kind of episode that makes your hair stand up. "Shrek" is a Marine's Marine—combat leader, airpower tactician, and the former commander of VMX-1, the Corps' top Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron at Yuma, Arizona. He's called in air support as a Forward Air Controller on the ground in Ramadi, and he's led Marines flying cutting-edge aircraft like the F-35B Lightning II and the MV-22 Osprey.

What happens when a devout faith is tested by the appeal of nightlife and poor choices? Curtis, our guest on this episode of Ordinary People Extraordinary Things, knows the answer all too well. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in ministry, Curtis carried his strong faith through homeschooling to public high school, proudly wearing the label of "Jesus freak" despite the teasing. Through small decisions, the absence of his accountability partner, and a decision on his 21st birthday that spiraled into a night of chaos, he candidly recounts the hours lost in a haze, only to wake up to missing clothes and an unexpected confrontation with the law resulting in a 2nd degree murder charge. But Curtis's story is one of redemption and spiritual awakening. Facing the darkness of a jail cell, he discovered forgiveness from God and a renewed purpose. Curtis shares how this pivotal moment transformed his understanding of grace, surrender, and the importance of sharing his journey to inspire others. Curtis's journey serves as a beacon of hope for those struggling with guilt and the fear of unforgiveness. Join us for a powerful testimony of hope, resilience, and the life-altering impact of true faith.

This week I was down in Delaware, Ohio hanging with Frank Barickman who is the owner and head brewer at Restoration Brew Works. Frank and I discussed the brewery's opening in 2015, and how they survived through 2020. We also talked a lot about how breweries need to evolve in 2023 to remain successful. During the interview we drank some very tasty beers including a Pilsner featuring a new aged lager yeast that helps it finish out fast like an Ale while still maintaining a traditional lager taste. We also drank an award-winning Irish Red that they often use as a gateway beer for non-craft beer drinkers to convert them. At the end we drank a delicious Russian Imperial Stout from 2021. Beer Selection: · Sulky – German Pilsner 5.4 % · Stewart Red – Irish Red 5.9% · Cosmic Juice – American IPA 6.7% · Silverback – Russian Imperial Stout 11.5% · Eclipse Black Lager – Schwarzbier 5% You can find Restoration Brew Works on the web at https://restorationbrewworx.com/ and you can also see them on FB @rbwrx and IG at @rbworx. This week I got to sit down with our old friend Paul Fryman from JAFB to catch up on everything that is going on at the Wooster, Ohio brewery. Paul brought his brewer Josh Orzel to the show as well. Not only did we discuss the latest happening at JAFB, but we also discussed some fresh beer topics like the use of AI in the craft beer world, and the latest craft beer legend to close their doors. During the interview we also drank some fantastic beer including: Beer Selection · Tijuana Night Mexican Dark Lager 5.2% · JAF IPA 7.5% · Summer Forever NEIPA 6.7% · Wooster New Stout 7.5% You can find JAFB Brewing Company on the web at https://www.jafbbeer.com/ and you can also see them on FB @woosterbrewery and IG at @jafbbeer. WARNING: Explicit language throughout this episode. Do not listen with children around. Tisha is running late. Damo had a few drinks. Damon will be the “Designated Driver' for this ride! The guys get caught up on why they've been missing for a few weeks. Spoiler Alert: Blame Damon. Haha. Are HTs the DCs big bros? Recruiters were ordered to work 6 days a week but that was quickly shut down. A Class “C” fire was recently reported on the USS Abraham Lincoln, but why? Should rank “have its privileges”? Damo has an update (and more jokes) about the CMDCM that told his command to “clap like you're in a strip club.” Is the “Division in the Spotlight” program necessary or a waste of time? Damon asks when will we have a woman be selected as the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy? Should 100% disability be awarded to every veteran that served over 20 years? The crew talks about their initial experiences when they checked into their first ships and walked into berthings for the first time. This leads to a conversation about women vs men berthing cleanliness. Damo reflect on his “shart” story. Is there a such thing as “too much liberty”? A 14 year old girl was found in a Marine barracks on Camp Pendleton. The family is alleging a human trafficking attempt. The opposition is claiming that she lied about her age. A Sailor was caught trying to engage in sexual relations with a minor. An armed Navy veteran was recently arrested near the Obama's home. These topics and more are covered in this episode. This week I celebrate my 100th episode with a visit to Cambridge, Ohio. This week's brewery visit was at Guernsey Brewhouse, and I got to sit down with Shawn Long who is the co-owner of Guernsey Brewhouse along with his wife Amy. We were also joined by Shawn's co-brewer Tony Wray. We talked about the history of Cambridge and its lack of brewing history. We discussed the challenge of being a rural brewery and the challenges of being discovered by brewery explorers. This led to Shawn making a very solid point that your regulars are the ones that sustains business due their reliability, which makes it very important to brew great beer that they want to drink. I can tell you that there is no shortage of great beer at Guernsey Brewhouse. We enjoyed a lager, shandy, hazy IPA, and Imperial stout. Beer Selection: · Guernsey Lager – 4.5% · Spaceman IPA w/ Cryo Hops –7.25% · Lemon Shandy –4% · S-Bridge Stout – 9% You can find Guernsey Brewhouse on the web at http://www.guernseybrewhouse.com/ and you can also see them on FB and IG at @guernseybrewhouse. We watch "Rosa" (Series 11, Episode 3) where the Doctor and the Who Crew travel to 1950s Alabama, USA. Whilst there, our non-white appearing time travelers encounter good old southern "hospitality" from the "period-accurate-properly-white" natives, then our white appearing time travelers enjoy genuine good old southern hospitality, and finally our non-white genuine hero Rosa Parks encounters galactic level racism from time traveling piece of crap Krasko. This episode has been respectfully brought to you by American fans of Doctor Who debating the appropriateness of a British entertainment program rehashing genuinely American fixed points in time.
In this episode, Sunne and Ken talk about what taking full responsibility for your life looks like, and how YOU can be the one in control of your life rather than waiting on someone else to get into your drivers seat.
