Before we poke our heads in to 2022, let's look back — about 18 years. This week, we're dropping a special interview between Scott Lewis and host of the San Diego 101 podcast, Maya Srikrishnan. Scott was featured on the latest SD101 episode, "A Short History of San Diego Politics," along with Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher and San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate. Lewis has been covering San Diego politics since 2004 — when a whole bunch of political drama boiled over. In this interview, he recounts the so-called "Cheetah-gate" scandal that took down up-and-coming San Diego City Councilmembers, the write-in mayoral campaign of Donna Frye, the Bob Filner scandal and a lot more that didn't make it into the 101 episode. This week, we explain the 101 Ash Street saga from the beginning and why it matters. ***** In January, VOSD's Lisa Halverstadt wrote a long piece on the role Jason Hughes, a commercial real estate broker, had in the mess the city has faced related to 101 Ash St., the building it was never able to move employees into. Hughes had been an unpaid volunteer advising mayors going back to Bob Filner and helping the city renegotiate leases. But he also helped the city lease two large towers, 101 Ash St. and Civic Center Plaza. This week, we learned Hughes had, at some point, stopped being a volunteer and had instead gotten one of the most lucrative commercial real estate gigs in the city: representing the city itself. He revealed it himself. The company that bought the two buildings so that the city could lease them from it paid him $9.4 million. He revealed it because the city attorney was about to make public the results of its subpoenas and new lawsuits meant to unravel the two deals based on the theory that Hughes had violated state conflict-of-interest laws and thus the lease-to-own arrangements were void. It's all very complex. We have two important pieces on it: Why what then-Mayor Kevin Faulconer knew matters and how we wouldn't know any of this without asbestos. And now, we now have this podcast. Ilisa Goldman thinks it should be easy for a group of neighbors to spruce up a vacant, city-owned lot with seating, shade, art and other simple amenities. Instead, they often end up having to claw through a series of bureaucratic barriers and many simply give up, or avoid the ordeal entirely. Goldman is the landscape architect and planner behind Rooted in Place, a firm she started to help clients – mostly nonprofits and community groups – create public spaces and outdoor learning environments for kids. In a new episode of I Made it in San Diego, a podcast about the people behind the region's businesses, I talk to Goldman about the community gardens, outdoor classrooms and other projects she's designed, and her ongoing struggle to make it easier for people to improve their neighborhoods. Jargon like "tactical urbanism" and "placemaking" have gained popularity in recent years. Both concepts refer to the kind of work Goldman does – quicker, easier, more affordable urban projects, often in historically underserved communities. Goldman said the placemaking movement is gaining popularity, in part, because once one community builds a successful project, other people take note and feel empowered to do it, too. "I think that communities were sort of tired of waiting," she said. "They were waiting for improvements to happen in their community and trying to go through City Council and trying to go through governance and realizing it was really hard." Goldman has successfully completed several placemaking projects across the county, both with her firm, and during her stint with the city of San Diego's short-lived Civic Innovation Lab, a pet project of then-mayor Bob Filner who envisioned it as an incubator to help the city do quicker, more affordable, neighborhood-driven projects. "I saw firsthand what the real issues were inside the city, and outside of the city with community organizations," she said. "What were the biggest challenges, why was it hard to do these placemaking projects. I had really come to understand that our development services [department] was geared toward developers who had money, not toward communities that wanted to make their own change." What role do endorsements play in politics? Is it just a lot of back-slapping among friends and political influencers? Do they really sway voters in any meaningful way? And what is the process that goes on in the background that leads to an organization or individual endorsing a political candidate? These are just some of the questions that we’re exploring on this, the first episode of Voice of San Diego’s new podcast, San Diego Decides. Throughout this podcast, we’ll be digging into all kinds of different aspects of the 2016 San Diego election. This episode is bringing you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about endorsements in a political election. There are certain times when an endorsement is, in fact, an overwhelming factor, particularly when the general voting population is not especially up to date on the issues or the candidates, or when candidates have very similar voting records. Other times, endorsements are little more than announcements that go straight into trash folder of your email inbox. Sara and Ry also reveal whose endorsements they’d seek out if they were running for office in San Diego, and Brian Pepin, the new president of the Lincoln Club of San Diego County, comes on to discuss his group’s process for deciding whom to endorse. This Week’s Favorite Things Sara Libby: The state of Oregon passed a “Motor Voter” law, and has signed up more than 10,000 new voters since the start of the year. Ry Rivard: “Sometimes a Great Notion,” a novel by Ken Kesey.   Bullet Points People will tend to rely more on endorsements when they don’t especially know what’s going on When you really understand what’s going on, endorsements are less important When two people with very similar voting records are running against each other, it’s one of the only ways to differentiate Tony Atkins and Marty Block are a recent example of endorsements playing an important role Lori Saldana, who is running for mayor as an independent, endorsed Bob Filner for mayor a few years ago, but has since revealed that she was aware of his issues with his treatment of women at the time, and had actually warned party leaders about it. She since stated that she didn’t want to bring up the harassment while her father was still alive Endorsements are important to candidates both for the resources that come with them, and in the way that endorsements can sway voters

Welcome to another edition of the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast. This time Ric Epps and myself recorded the podcast in front of San Diego’s City Hall. We were there just before a Resign/Recall Bob Filner Rally/March. We talked to two of the organizers. 1: Republican Kathryn Vaughn: Member of USO San Diego Board of Directors and Partner with Vaughn & Vaughn Attorneys at Law. She was named California’s Volunteer of the Year in 2010 and is a workshop leader on sexual harassment in the workplace. 2:Democrat Karen Cebreros: Founding Partner of Track the Impact and Member of the Rotary Club of San Diego. She is also a founder and former director of the International Women's Coffee Alliance and a strong advocate for sustainable and ethical farming practices around the world. This event describes itself as a “grassroots group [that] began with both political affiliations sitting around a dining room table, united together to call for Mayor Bob Filner’s resignation in the face of what is now known to be a long-standing pattern of overwhelming inappropriate and harassing behavior towards women. We also talked to the self described Public Relations “flak” David Oates from Stalwart Communications … he’s the guy that helped to organize the organizers. He shared his insight about the kind of people that came out for the resign/recall rally. Interesting and fun. As always if you want to hop on your soapbox … you can by hopping on ours … call us at 619-663-4531 Now the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with me Matt Bowler and the Political Professor Ric Epps. … And please remember to post, re-post, and share.
