3 Fears That Limit Your Success

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 19, 2016 47:33

Being in control of your life and taking responsibility for the direction it takes is very liberating and empowering. However, this responsibility can make you cringe when you realize that you can limit your success by what you do or not do. It is one thing to make decisions that you thought would lead to your success and it didn't pan out as planned. This is part of life. The sad part is when you don't go after your dream, which could bring you success because of fear. How many people do you know that have done this? I know quite a few people who allowed fear to dominate their lives to the extent they chose to "bury" their dream. Are you one of those? Are you allowing fear to keep you from your best life? I know what it's like to be at that place. It wasn't too many years ago where I found myself dealing with similar fears. In this episode our guest - Ike Anderson - helps us look at three fears that could limit your success unless you do something about it. He shared his own life and how he too had to overcome these fears. You will be surprised about his update on this very topic as it comes to his own journey. Here are some other important things to know about Ike and his thoughts about Jamaica - the country he is representing, migration, responsibility, hard work and taking action. Why visit Jamaica: - Explore the historical aspect of the country; ancestry and lineage; cultural mix of people from several cultural mix Whats a must do in Jamaica? - Expose yourself to the music and the many food items available Favorite dish: - Ackee & Saltfish Homeland lessons my Grandmother taught me: - hard work always beat talent - you have to be better than the next person  - learn to work smarter, not necessarily harder - be willing to do twice as much as the next person - your talent can take you but so far Definition of Success: - the ability to do what I want, when I want, how I want to because I want to, while contributing to others Obstacles experienced: - overcoming fear - becoming vulnerable especially having grown up within a culture that communicates the opposite Migration story: - Literally had to start over from scratch not having the support system in place as I had in Jamaica. - Going to a school that had a lot of Jamaicans was helpful. It gave me a feel of being home. Also, living in a community that has a huge Jamaican population, helped also. - I didn't like the migration. I wanted to go home. It can be really lonely. - Having my dad around helped to some degree. - Because I realized that this journey is always unfolding, I had to be flexible. I also chose not to stay down and kept going when things got rough. - As it is with your car light that will only give you enough light for a short distance but as you go you find that it is always enough to get you to the next point, so it is with my journey. - My life and business is always evolving. Lessons Learned: Get clear on your dreams - what are you creating and why. Create a roadmap for your life Surround yourself with amazing people because you are the average of the 5 people you hang around. Constantly evaluate your peer group. Figure out and practice a daily habit of how to ground yourself. For me it’s gratitude. Gratitude dispels fear and other negative emotions from your body. 5 Helpful Tips To Plan A Cruise To The Caribbean with Kingsley Grant

Growing up in the rural parts of Jamaica, had it's advantages and disadvantages. The phrase "plan a cruise" would not normally be a part of any conversation we would have. This requires vacation time, which wasn't something common among us. Some people from the city would be more familiar with these conversations even though they may not have actually gone on a cruise. Not being familiar or up-to-date on certain phrases or words, some of the people from the city would label us sometimes as a "country bwoy (boy)" or "country gal (girl)." It wasn't something that I was proud of. As a matter of fact it was mostly used in a derogatory way. The implications is that you are not as smart, up-to-date, or "cool" as those who were from the city. I'm not sure if you had this or a similar experience, but I think you are able to get the gist of the term and why it was used. Advantages and Disadvantages: One of the disadvantages of growing up in the country is that we were not exposed to a lot of things as those from the city. Some of us were kind of naive to certain things and our lives were more laid-back than those from the city. For me, going on vacation was one of the "things" I referenced above. We knew about the idea but never experienced it in the true sense of the word. Our family never planned vacations. My dad was busy with work as a solopreneur, which you will hear more about in this episode. His work solely depended on him each day going out to make an income. No work, no income. To plan a vacation meant not having an income for that period of time. He was the main provider for the family, which made it even more challenging. In this episode I talk more about that as well as delved into the following five tips on how to plan a cruise especially one that is Caribbean in nature. Here are the 5 helpful tips to plan a cruise: Plan to exercise Avoid purchasing the wifi plan Plan your daily activities the day before Plan personal down time Prepare for a small shower space Bonus Tip: Plan to go off the ship at each port for the experience even if it is just to walk around. Princess Cruise Line. Caribbean Princess. What does this have to do with me? I'm sailing the Western Caribbean and have chosen this cruise-line to make it happen. In this episode you'll discover how you can too. Not at this particular time of course but at some time in the very near future I hope. This episode is not like the others. Most of the other episodes are interview based. However, this week I'll be on vacation. Yeah, vacation. One of the things I find that people who are pursuing their dream and sometimes feel like they are on the edge of a breakthrough, find it hard and in their mind impossible, to drag themselves away from their work. Have you been there? If you have, you know what that's like. And they won't take a break especially a break that takes them away from their "work" for a few hours much less days. I have to fight through this temptation myself. I could easily work, work, work. But, with my wife's help and planning, I am getting away for a few days at sea. So, in this episode I share how this came about and how you too can do something similar. It's not as hard as you think. Work Because You Want To Not Because You Have To

What freedom there is in doing something because you want to rather than because you have to. So many people are working at jobs not because they want to but simply because they have to. A recent survey by Gallup revealed that 87% of people who are working do so not because they want to. Majority are disengage at work while some are totally disengage meaning they just don't want to be there. What a miserable way to do life. I'm so glad that I have reached the point where I decide when, where, how and when to work. Not many people have reached this point. I must say it is not easy. It takes planning, hard work, sacrifice, discipline and a host of other factors. The point is, it's possible. In this episode you will hear our guest - Dr. Cassandra "Coach Cass" Henriquez, share how your plan B should be to find the work that you love and find ways to get paid for it so that you can work because you want to. You might be familiar with the quote attributed to Mark Twain: "Find a job you enjoy doing and you will never have to work a day in your life." Here are some other important things to know about Coach Cass' thoughts about her homeland, migration, lessons learned, culture, assimilation, hard work, taking action and one phrase that has remained with her: Q. What country are you representing? A. Jamaica Q. Why should someone visit Jamaica? A. - an ongoing place of discovery … see the people who live off the land … mystic mountain to do zip-lining Q. Whats a must do, see or have while in Jamaica? A. - Visit Dunns River Falls; support the local business, sugar cane and jerk chicken; ackee and salt-fish Q. What's your favorite dish you missed? A. - This is not a dish but what I miss the most is Ethiopian Apple. Q. What one phrase that has remained with you from your homeland? A. - "wi lickle but wi talawa" Translation: (even though we are from a small country we come with a strong force. Just like I’m a small person, I can do many great things. There’s nothing that can hold me back. I know my heritage. I know what we’ve overcome.- In general, when a child knows their heritage they are better positioned to be successful. There are less confusion in their lives.h") Q. What's your definition of Success? - living life on your terms  - so many people are living their lives according to someone else standards - if you are living your life within your own standards, morals and values, you are successful Q. What are some obstacles you experienced in your journey? - my mindset was my #1 obstacle. I thought I wasn’t enough. I thought I couldn’t do it. I felt like I didn’t have enough experience - knowing that what I have to offer someone wants and I just need to find that person and give it to them Some take aways: - Find out who is your ideal client. When you work with people who are not your ideal client, you will be very miserable and become a slave to money. Because they are paying, you work with them. - how to price your product - how to build your team - find a way to have the ideal person pay you what you deserve to be paid and deliver - whatever you have to offer, there is a customer out there for you - have multiple streams of income - when you only have one stream of income is when you become a slave to what you are doing whether working for someone else or for yourself - you need to have that plan B so that the reason why you’re working is not because of the paycheck but becuase you want to be there Lessons Learned: Finding your purpose Find out who is making money doing what you want to do. Interview 3 people doing what you are doing and are charging for it Make sure you give back whether in your business or in your life Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not those who tear you down Tweet: "It doesn’t have to be new, it just have to be from you" Coach Cass' Bio: When love eludes you, there is only one woman who can help you capture it—and she is Dr. Casandra “Coach Cass” Henriquez. An intuitive love coach and matchmaker for successful women, Coach Cass sets stages aflame as an in-demand speaker and, in 2015, as a TedX presenter. Quickly succeeding at anything almost sounds like an oxymoron. How can you succeed quickly much less as a young entrepreneur. Doesn’t entrepreneurship takes time? Yes and no. One can become a young entrepreneur even without realizing it. As a matter of fact, some are already entrepreneur, but don’t realize it or have labeled what they are doing as such. In an earlier episode I shared how for years I didn’t realize or label what my dad did as entrepreneurship. I saw him as a small business person and even that wasn’t the term I gave what he did. This is true of many of the people living in the Caribbean. Many of them have a business in one way or another, many times too small to be labeled as a business, yet it is. They wouldn’t call themselves an entrepreneur. As a matter of fact some do not know what an entrepreneur is. It is a term that is fairly new especially within the caribbean. In this episode, our guest Georgie-Ann Getton McCoy who is representing Jamaica, shares her journey as a young entrepreneur. She is the youngest guest we’ve had on the show so far. As you listen, if you weren’t told her age, you would not believe you were listening to someone who is in her very early twenties. You’ll hear her mention how old she is in this interview. Here are the 3 keys that Georgie-Ann shared as necessary to succeed as a young entrepreneur. Knowledge (Education) Experiences Connections Here are some other important things to know about Georgie-Ann and her thoughts about Jamaica, migration, responsibility, hard work, taking action and a phrase that she remembers from the homeland - Jamaica. Why visit Jamaica: - natural springs, mineral waters Whats a must do in Jamaica? - Explore the countryside for it’s agriculture, diversity, beauty of the island Favorite dish: - Ackee & Saltfish Phrase from homeland and translation: - If sick nuh care, doctor nuh care Translation: (if the person who is sick doesn’t want the care, how will they get the help; how does the person who can provide the assistance offer them the help they need. You have to want the help. - people will help you if you make your need known and request the help yourself Definition of Success: - working towards living the life you envision for yourself while being grateful for where you are right now and the goals you have achieved so far - you are successful in this moment because of accomplishments - embrace your accomplishments and remind yourself of such Obstacles experienced: - pushing through even when many people do not respect your hard work - feeling like a failure when not achieving goals set for myself - having a baby during the 12th Grade of High School; became a teen mom Migration story: - moved with family members to the United States - landed in Brooklyn where there were a good number of other Caribbean migrants - learned to fend for myself from an early age which gave me the drive to pursue my goals in a relentless manner - started school and began to pursue accounting but realized it wasn’t for me. - my passion was to be a teacher and creator - took a leap of faith and quit my job - transferred to another school - started my own clothing line to see what could happen - joined meetup groups and participating in events for about a year but realized a need to create a venue for people of color, from the caribbean and women. - started as a hobby; an idea and now do 2 - 3 events per month (workshops, hackathons mainly around career and tech) Experience versus expectations in coming to USA - not as described  - has more opportunities; more options - have to hustle more / work hard   Lessons Learned: When you have an idea find the easiest and fastest way to test it out. Don’t wait. Even though my student loans were not as astronomical as some, it is still a burden. I’m still making payments years later. It’s evident that people are looking for a way to get out from beneath this burden. Many are working a number of jobs. Others are defaulting. While some are looking for forgiveness on their loan. It’s a sin to see what is happening within the education industry. No wonder there are so many competitive alternatives being offered especially in the online space. Seeing some companies making adjustments as to how they hire their employees will also alleviate this burden as they move away from educational credentials. This is good news. Time will tell what will happen in the educational space. Until them, we have to contend with what we have. So many people do not know what they want out of life. Do you know what you want? Are you one of those who so far have gone through or is going through life without any direction or compass to guide you? What if you could know what you want? What if you were to wake up tomorrow morning knowing what you want to do with your life, what difference would that make? How would you be feeling? This is what our guest - Donald C. Kelly - talked about on this episode of Success Caribbean Style Podcast. Even though he didn't give you a step by step way to discover what you want out of life or gave you a crystal ball, which he nor I doesn't really believe in, yet you will find some key principles that will be helpful to you. Donald described his migration story as one where it came with many challenges. He bounced around in the initial stages between family and friends while his mom hustled to make a life where they would all one day be together again. He talks about the experience of having to lose their home and having to figure out how to survive, which he did. Migration, according to Donald, has it's challenges. He cited the times when he was picked on because of his accent. He would do everything in his power to speak the way this new culture "demanded" so that he would not be picked on as much. In doing so, he had to in someway become someone else. This required to some extent that he gave up a part of his culture, until he later realized it was cool to have an accent. This lesson taught him a number of things and he now help others to find their uniqueness, embrace it and use it to their advantage. Here are a few things to know about Donald. Favorite Dish: Ackee and Saltfish Favorite Saying: yawdman or yawdy - someone who is considered an original from the island of Jamaica. Place(s) You Must See: Dunns River Falls Definition of Success: means the ability to be happy; to be at peace and to be comfortable. In discussing the issue of success in the light of having peace and being comfortable, Donald made these points: people not having peace is not going to be at peace strive to have peace and contentment with yourself you can have monetary goals but it has to be more than that Lessons learned: utilize the unique advantages you have as a non-native indvidual - hard work you may at times feel like an outsider, but don't allow that to stop you felt like a walk on athlete who is not taken as serious, therefore prove to yourself you can do it when it feels like others have counted you out, make that a driving force. Tweet: you were born an original don’t die a copy - Donald Kelly Greatest Accomplishment(s): married to his wife who is a support and an encouragement finding out that he's a good speaker and can use his gift to help others; inspire them use in personal life; with friends; in church . One of those would be from a spiritual perspective, which will be a conversation for another time.
