Why do most people think all dogs love strangers, other dogs, and being in public? Well it might be the unrealistic view we see on TV, Social Media, or what we try to pigeonhole our dog into because of what a friend's dog is like ;-) Well, we talk about if this is fair or even true and a little bit about why... Then we talk about a cook new website that might help with dogs that don't deal with other dogs so well but still need to run and stretch their legs!!!Support the showMike Deathe owns Keep it Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.) How can we use the idea of Happy Visits and Owner Absent Behaviors to help better understand our pets!!! Well, the happy visits make loving the veterinarian and groomer a whole lot easier, and understanding what owner-absent behaviors are will help you get a grip on those behaviors you are working and training to fix but seem to never make any progress (Just what is Fido practicing when you are not around!)Support the showMike Deathe owns Keep it Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.) This episode is a two-for-one! We first talk about how it is possible to get kids involved with Mom or Dad to help with training while tackling some of those kid and dog issues that might crop up... For years the rule has been, "Can I Pet Your Dog?" Then the dog is approached and petted by a person... But is that enough? Should the dog have a say in this scenario, and if so, how do we do that? What if the dog is fearful, reactive not fond of men or kids? I think it is time we rethink the "Can I Pet Your Dog?" routine, and we start that discussion in the podcast! So folks who know me understand I am a positive reinforcement dog trainer and do not like certain tools or methods in dog training. But just how forceful do we get in demanding a client use this or that or do things a particular way? I think we all also understand how folks don't like change and want things a particular way ;-) So what do you do when presented with a challenging situation or a client that wants to use something they feel they need? Well, you think outside the box and teach. Now don't get me wrong, there are some things in training that I flat won't do, but in these two examples, I went outside the box, and the results worked out pretty darn well!!!! There are 3 ways to train dogs and they are all important but two of them rarely get explained well to clients (I will try and hopefully succeed...) The obvious ones are the skills or toolbox of training commands and cues, the others are the management we use to stop the practice of unwanted behaviors, and lastly, routines which can make training easier on you from a time perspective and allow for the training to be more consistent. Hopefully, after listening to this you can institute a few tweaks here and there and make training easier on not only you but your dog as well!Support the showMike Deathe owns Keep it Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.) Ok so doggy daycare and dog parks are complicated topics but I will give you many of my thoughts from a generalized view... But the real takeaway is that not every dog likes or needs daycare or dog parks! Some do and some will love them but for others, it might actually make the issues you are having even worse. Be open and honest with everyone involved (trainer, vet, daycare, and friends that want you to go to the dog park with them) and you will get better suggestions and results!!!Support the showMike Deathe owns Keep it Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.) My dog won't play fetch! All dogs play fetch why won't mine? Well, there are some tips and tricks to teaching this retrieving behavior and I think after listening you will be able to get it going in the right direction... And then we talk about the idea of the "Tap Out" and if all dogs want to have their belly rubbed... All sorts of good stuff to get you thinking about the how, why when, and where of Dog Training!!!
Is resource guarding normal? How do I introduce a new dog to the family? Do I need professional help and what can I do to maybe make the process easier? Well, we cover all of that and more.
Another twofer of topics this round as we rebrand the podcast from the 12 Minute Dog Podcast to The Keep it Simple Stupid Dog Training Podcast! In this episode, we talk about two of Mike's "Pet Peeves" dogs being allowed off-leash in on-leash areas and issues folks don't consider when choosing the "convenience of a wireless fence. You might not realize it but both can be really big issues for you and others if you are not prepared and even then they might still not be good ideas!
This episode is a twofer! We talk about how consistency and frequency of practice are critical to success in dog training and then we talk about leash skills and how we can look at pulling a little bit differently.
So are all dogs social, do they love people and dogs and everything else in the world? Well sure some are and trust me some are not and to think or expect them all to be that way is not fair to the dogs or the owners.
