Aggression in dogs is one of the most misunderstood behavior problems owners face. In this episode, Scott Sheaffer explains why dogs growl, bark, lunge, snap, or bite, and why these behaviors are usually not about a “bad dog.” Aggression is often communication, and the real issue may involve fear, anxiety, pain, resource guarding, frustration, genetics, early development, or learned behavior.Scott also explains the difference between reactivity and aggression, why many dogs give warning signs before escalating, and why punishing those warnings can make a dog less safe rather than more reliable. This episode gives dog owners a clearer, more useful way to understand aggressive behavior and why identifying the cause matters more than simply trying to stop the behavior.Episode Link(s):Understanding Dog Body Language VideoYou can visit USADogBehavior.com for lots of dog behavior resources—almost all of them are free—including videos, blog articles, and past podcast episodes to help you understand your dog.Scott Sheaffer provides customized behavioral seminars for shelters, rescues, and veterinary teams—available online or on-site—focused on real-world strategies, with discounted or complimentary options available. Text Me Your QuestionsIn this episode of Dog Training Today, Dog Behaviorist Will Bangura explains one of the most misunderstood forms of resource guarding: when a dog guards access to a pet parent, family member, couch, bed, lap, or preferred person. Many pet parents describe this behavior as jealousy, protectiveness, or loyalty. However, when a dog stiffens, blocks, growls, snaps, lunges, or bites as another dog, spouse, child, visitor, or family member approaches, the behavior may be better understood as resource guarding. Will breaks down what person-directed resource guarding looks like, why it happens, why punishment can increase risk, and how pet parents can begin managing the behavior safely. He also explains the importance of distance, early body language, threshold awareness, pain and medical considerations, multi-dog household management, and humane behavior modification. This episode is especially important for families living with multiple dogs, dogs who guard the couch or bed, dogs who growl when another dog approaches a pet parent, and dogs who become tense or aggressive when people come too close to a valued person.Learn why growling should not be punished, why dogs should not be forced to “work it out,” and why the goal is not forced sharing. The goal is safety, emotional change, predictable routines, and helping the dog learn that people and dogs approaching the pet parent are not a threat. #DogTrainingToday #WillBangura #DogBehavior #DogBehaviorist #ResourceGuarding #ResourceGuardingDogs #DogAggression #DogReactivity #ReactiveDogs #AggressiveDogs #MultiDogHousehold #DogBodyLanguage #PositiveReinforcement #ForceFreeDogTraining #FearFreeTraining #CanineBehavior #DogTraining #PetParents #PhoenixDogTraining #DogAggressionTraining #DogReactivityTraining #DogBehavioristPhoenix #DogsOfInstagram #DogPodcast #DogTrainingPodcast Support the showIf you need professional help please visit my Dog Behaviorist website.Go here for Free Dog Training Articles

Was that a sign of resource guarding? This week, Tara and Laura cover some of the signs of general resource guarding that many people will miss. Resource guarding is natural in all animals, but many times people won't notice the subtle signs of his behavior. The more confidence a dog builds with these simple behaviors the more likely it can escalate.Sponsored by K9 WorkingmindThis episode was edited and mastered by The WillaWoman. Resource guarding is one of those behaviors that gets treated like it's one simple problem with one simple fix.Just add abundance.Just countercondition it.Just follow this protocol.Except… it's not that simple. In this episode of Enrichment for the Real World, Emily is joined by Haylee Heisel to unpack why “guarding” is a label, and why treating it like a one-size-fits-all issue can make things worse. We talk about:Why dumping a trash bag of tennis balls into a yard is not the same thing as creating securityHow pain, stress, attachment, hormones, neurochemistry, and environment all influence guarding behaviorWhy prescriptive formulas fall apart in real lifeAnd what it actually looks like to take a descriptive, needs-based approach insteadFrom sanctuary dogs guarding light switches and metal buckets… to puppies guarding during heat cycles… to cases where angry voices were the real trigger, this episode is a deep dive into the messy, nuanced reality of behavior.Because treating guarding isn't about “the thing”, it's about the why. When we slow down enough to find the why, the path forward gets clearer.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 3 Key Takeaways 1️⃣ “Guarding” is a label, not a diagnosis - Many different behaviors get lumped under resource guarding, and they can happen for completely different reasons. If you treat them all the same, you'll miss the actual unmet need driving the behavior.2️⃣ Abundance is not the same thing as security - Meeting needs absolutely matters. But more stuff doesn't automatically equal safety. Pain, stress, attachment history, hormones, environment, and neurochemistry can all fuel guarding in ways that extra resources won't fix.3️⃣ Prescriptive formulas break down while descriptive thinking holds up - Instead of “if guarding, then do X,” ask: What's driving this? What changed? What does this individual need right now? When you treat the root cause, guarding often shifts. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.
In this Q&A episode, we're answering your questions about resource guarding. If you've ever lied awake at 2am thinking: “Is this normal?” “Am I overreacting?”“Did I cause this?” “Should I try that 30-second training hack I just saw on the internet?”This one's for you.We don't want you spiraling. And we definitely don't want you getting bitten. So we're breaking down what resource guarding actually is, when it's a real concern, when it's just… normal, and why timing and trust matter more than flashy hacks.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 1️⃣ Resource guarding is normal - Across species. Including humans. The real questions are about safety, reasonability, and relationship impact. 2️⃣ From your dog's perspective, you might be a thief - If you regularly take things without trading, you're eroding trust. Establishing a baseline of “when I take, I give” changes everything.3️⃣ This is not a “just follow this one tip” behavior - Timing matters. Order of events matters. Agency matters. DIYing this from a random post can make it worse faster than you think. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips

Welcome to Parenting Kids and Dogs 101, a limited series podcast for parents who live with kids and dogs, or plan to. I'm your host, Michelle Stern, the founder of Pooch Parenting. I'm not just a certified professional dog trainer and former teacher, I'm a mom too. In each episode of this series, I hope you'll feel like I'm chatting with you, one parent to another, about life with kids and dogs, answering common questions my clients ask me, and giving you simple solutions to make your life easier and safer.I hope you'll subscribe and join me for the whole series, and don't forget to grab the accompanying workbook at https://poochparenting.net/podcastworkbook/What is Resource Guarding?Resource guarding happens when a dog is worried that we are going to take away something they care about. Resource guarding can happen over a food, toy, treat, chew, spaces (like a dog bed, your bed or the sofa) or with peopleImagine eating at a restaurant and having your server try to take your unfinished meal over and over again. You'd get upset, right? This is likely how your dog feels - and they can begin to dread the approach of the person who often tries to take their belongings.Imagine instead your server keeps bringing you goodies or unexpected treats. Now, you will look forward to their approach. You want your dog to feel this way about you and your kids, if possible - you are the bearer of good things instead of the taker of good things. Is Resource Guarding in Dogs Normal?Yes, resource guarding in dogs IS normal. It's scary and can be dangerous, especially if the dog leaves their treasure to chase away or bite a child to prevent them from getting closer. Is Resource Guarding a Deal Breaker in Families with Kids?Resource guarding is often treatable and is quite manageable with reliable managementUnfortunately, kids often forget to shut gates, doors or pens, so we can't rely on our kids to use management 100% effectivelyIf your dog guards ONE item, such as food, it's easier to treat. If your dog guards spaces or items that become unpredictable, it's more difficult and you should reach out to a positive reinforcement dog professional. If your dog leaves their item to chase or bite people, the stakes are much higher in families with kids. I'd recommend a consultation with me or another professional you trust to make a deeper assessment of the circumstances.Thank you for listening! They break down common misconceptions about dog behavior, the importance of crate training, and why providing clarity and direction prevents behavioral issues before they start.Millie shares expert insights on crate placement, setting no-dog zones for safety, and why feeding in the crate reinforces structure. She also emphasizes the value of structured leash walking, managing impulse control through thresholds, and ensuring calmness before offering resources. Plus, she provides a checklist to help owners determine when and how to gradually reduce structure while maintaining a respectful and trusting relationship with their dog.Throughout the episode, Millie and Andreia stress that while treats are great for teaching tricks, they don't address deeper behavioral challenges. Leave us a messageResource guarding is a relatively common problem experienced by dog parents. Have you ever been surprised by a growl as you tried to take something from your sweet dog? Taken aback when your usually friendly dog bared her teeth as the neighbor's dog came near her toy? Resource guarding is both completely natural AND can be a big problem! We see folks worrying too much in some cases, and not enough in others. In this episode we use Jean Donaldson's book "Mine" as a jumping off point for a discussion on resource guarding: what to watch for, how to use management to prevent issues, how to handle emergencies, and how to keep your dog from becoming a problematic guarder.

Resource guarding, a behavior normal to all animals, not just dogs, can strain the human-canine relationship if not trained methodically. "We need to think about what our dog tells us they need. Join us as we delve into the subtle signs and triggers of resource guarding, and uncover why resource guarding happens in dogs. Then we'll unpack how to train resource guarding using positive reinforcement training techniques, emphasizing the importance of fostering trust and creating a positive environment around valuable resources. Our discussion includes practical tips on gradual desensitization, enabling dog owners to navigate this behavior with patience and empathy.
