Welcome back to the show! Today, Larry and Matt are joined in the studio by two legends of the sport- Adrian Demain and Miki Vuckovich- to dissect the 1980 oddball odyssey, Skateboard Madness! While there's no real way for anyone to pinpoint what this meandering film aspires to be- part skateboarding documentary and part road-trip comedy with roller skating, stop-motion, claymation and animated sequences thrown in- what cannot be disputed is the obvious and undeniable groundwork it helped to lay for star Stacy Peralta to bring to the early Bones Brigade videos that would follow just a few years later, where many of the movie's scenes and themes would be repurposed and reimagined for the next generation. Was Mellow Cat's epic urethane journey enough for him to keep his job at the Wonder Rolling News? There's only one way to find out. Join us, shall you? Welcome back to the show! For this, our 70th episode, we're absolutely honored to be joined by none other than legendary photographer, artist, and author Glen E. Friedman to discuss the genre-defining 2001 film Dogtown and Z-Boys! Chronicling the rise of the fabled Zephyr Team in the 1970's, this Stacy Peralta-directed documentary brought the roots of modern skateboarding- along with names like Tony Alva, Jay Adams, and Shogo Kubo- into the cultural mainstream, while paving the way for a slew of like-minded documentaries to follow. As a co-producer and creative consultant on the film- as well as having been pool and bank-side for many of the Z-Boys most renowned formative sessions- Glen brings a unique and truly one of a kind perspective, which he was gracious enough to sit down and share with us in candid detail. Welcome back, Brigadeers! Today, we're in the studio to dig deep into Mike Vallely's Y2K documentary, Sponsored- and joining us once again is Mike's former Black Label and Street Plant teammate, good friend, and touring partner Kristian Svitak! At just over 30 minutes, Sponsored is an embryonic foray into the world of skate documentaries that covers Mike's life in skating up to that point- a mere blip on the radar of the career we know today- and shows us some of the earliest glimpses of footage from his early skateboarding years, including some incredible public access cable and TV commercial appearances and (to that point) never seen b-roll from his days filming for Public Domain, and much more. This one is packed to the proverbial gills with the good stuff, including interviews with Powell stalwarts Ray Barbee and Lori Rigsbee, a look at the Transworld Skateboarding office in 1990 with the legendary Grant Brittain, a bowl-side chat in a blown out backyard with Tony Alva, and much more. The BBAS crew, along with our good friend Jim Fitzpatrick, are back in the studio this week to delve headfirst into the short, sweet and mostly unknown Powell Peralta video, Camp Motherhood! Developed primarily as a tradeshow video- promotional material to support Powell's 1989 sales and marketing initiatives- Camp Motherhood is an interesting time capsule, inadvertently bridging the gap between where Public Domain left off and Ban This started, and marking an infamous era for the ‘Brigade that saw the introduction of the notorious Field Manual, the exit of Mike Vallely, and numerous other changes beginning to manifest under the surface. Here we are, ringing in 40 years of the McTwist; perhaps the first trick in skateboarding history to achieve “household name” status. With the possible exception of the 900, is there a single skateboarding trick more legendary? A single maneuver that has been requested more by crowds of delirious, sunburnt demo-goers? We don't think so- and joining us here in the BBAS studio to back up this inarguable claim is renowned skate historian, author, artist, and Berlin Skateboard Museum curator Jürgen Blümlein! We talked with Jürgen about his involvement in the McTwist's 40th anniversary celebration, his collaboration with Mike McGill and Vans on their upcoming limited-edition commemorative Sk8-Hi colorway, and we get deep into the trick's rich four-decade history all the way back to that fateful evening at the Swedish summer camp in 1984. Greetings, skateboard cultists, and welcome back to Issue #13 of the Intelligence Report! To say we're excited for this one is an understatement, because joining us in the BBAS studio for an epic chat is none other than Eric Sanderson himself! An iconic member of the Bones Brigade during their 80's heyday, Eric was prominently featured in nearly all of the most revered Powell Peralta videos, participated in innumerable summer tours, and is of course one of the four riders that made up Public Domain's legendary Rubber Boys crew- and that's just scratching the surface. If you've listened this far, you surely know by now that we here at The Bones Brigade Audio Show have a borderline-unhealthy obsession with uncovering the smallest bits of minutiae available for anything and everything to do with the Powell Peralta videos. We assumed we were alone in this sickness, wandering the wastelands in search of forgotten parking lots and slabs of concrete once boardslid by the Rib Bones of giants. So, imagine our surprise when we came across the meticulously-crafted 40th Anniversary Bones Brigade Video Show Filming Locations video on the 80's Life YouTube channel! We had no choice but to reach out to its creator- Kurt Crucial- and an instant bond of skateboard nerddom was formed. A true kindred spirit, Kurt joined us in the studio to take us through his life in skateboarding, his process of making his incredible filming location videos, and how he was able to find so many of these hallowed skate spots last visited by Lance Mountain and Stacy Peralta some four decades ago. Welcome back to the show! For this, the 12th issue of the BBAS Intelligence Report, we're absolutely honored to be joined in the studio by none other than the legendary Sean Cliver! Picked out of a pool of more than 600 applicants to answer a 1988 Powell Peralta “artist wanted” ad, Sean packed his bags for a one-way trip to California where he spent three years creating some of the most revered graphics in the company's history, ably filling the impossibly large shoes of the recently-retired VCJ before moving on to a storied career as an artist, author, TV and movie producer, and eventual skateboard company owner. In addition to taking us through the whole story of his time at Powell HQ from beginning to end- leaving no stone unturned- we discussed nearly every graphic Sean designed for the ‘Brigade during his stint at the drawing table, and tons more. “By skaters, for skaters”-as it was then, so it is now at The Bones Brigade Audio Show! Welcome back to another cannonball straight into the Deep End of Nickelodeon's most notorious contribution to early nineties subculture, SK8-TV! Joining us in the studio for a part-by-part analysis of its fabled Episode 3 is none other than our good friend and returning special guest, the one and only Anthony Pappalardo. From Jim Thiebaud getting pummeled mid-interview by a bucket of water courtesy of Tommy Guerrero, to Lance Mountain getting his mouth duct-taped shut after drawing his own likeness on the bottom of Matt Lynn's foot, to Ray Underhill preaching skate safety from an RV window somewhere along a California mountain roadway, this episode delivers the goods in a hilarious, rapid-fire fashion that would set the pace for the rest of the series. We know what you're thinking- what the hell is “Matcha Rules?" Indeed, The Bones Brigade Audio Show has not been shy about shining light onto some of the more obscure and unknown videos from the farthest corners of the ‘Brigade universe- but this one might just take the cake. What we have here, friends, is a half hour long, professionally produced, stacked and soundtracked 1999 Powell Skateboards Japan tour video featuring Steve Caballero, Jon Comer and Moses Itkonen… that no one has ever heard of. You won't find it in a Google search. It's not online. The aforementioned skaters that were in it have never heard of it. How it came to be made, printed, and immediately relegated to absolute obscurity- even in the age of the internet- is a complete mystery. However, as always, the BBAS crew- with the assistance of this episode's special returning guest, legendary skate sleuth Bobby Puleo- are here to help unravel it all. Part by part, park by park and trick by trick, we get into the weeds and deliver you the VHS goods. Of course, you can come along for the ride, as this forgotten video enigma is now available for you to see in all its glory over on the BBAS YouTube channel. Does Matcha indeed rule? Roads? For this episode of The Bones Brigade Audio Show, we don't need roads. This week, the BBAS crew invite you to travel back in time to 1985 for the most complete and painstaking Back to the Future skateboarding retrospective ever assembled in one place! For many, this film- however unintentionally- marked the jumping off point, when skating entered the mainstream collective consciousness of legions of action-starved kids around the globe and helped kickstart the mid-80's skate boom to follow. Joining us on our trip are three incredible guests: Jerry Madrid, owner of Madrid Skateboards, to discuss the origins of Marty McFly's infamous Valterra/Madrid collaboration; Bob Schmelzer, Circle-A founder and pro freestyler who doubled for original BTTF leading man Eric Stoltz; and legendary Powell Peralta pro Per Welinder, who not only stepped into Michael J. Fox's skate shoes for the refilming, but also managed to find himself sitting in a car careening toward the back of a famous manure truck for one of the movie's most memorable scenes. We dig into the history, the filming, the stories, the culture, the graphics, and everything in between- so get that DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour and join us, shall you? Welcome back to the show! For this- our eleventh installment of the Intelligence Report series- we are honored to be joined in the studio by the legendary Sophie Bourgeois! Aside from being known far and wide in the Bones Brigade universe for her short but memorable interview and freestyle segment alongside Anita Tessensohn and Lori Rigsby in 1988's Public Domain, Sophie has a long and fascinating tale that is deeply rooted in skateboarding history. From her early days as one of Canada's top female skateboarders in the late 1970's to championship wins, meeting Kevin Harris, moving to the US, her two-year relationship with Rodney Mullen, filming with Stacy Peralta, injuries, comebacks, and the eventual bowing out for a career in academics and aviation- we cover it all and then some. As you undoubtedly know by now, these are stories you'll only get to hear if you are tuned into The Bones Brigade Audio Show, so watch out for them snakes and join us, shall you? “Powell magic”- a topic of much discussion here at the BBAS from the very beginning. Faithful listeners have endured countless tales of spliced-in sound effects, bails cut into makes, Frankie Hill's famous “foot POV” handrail, Robert Kittila's experimental camera creations… the list of Powell's magic moments goes on and on. Yet, there's one considerably important bit of Powell Magic yet to be delved into- the 1998 video of the same name! Yes, Brigadiers, today we'll be digging deep into Bones Brigade video 16- or so it's labeled- and joining us for the adventure is none other than legendary Powell pro, global skateboarding ambassador and 23-time X Games medalist, Andy Macdonald! We go part-by-part with Andy through this late-nineties time capsule to get the inside information on the team, the tricks, the tours, the trampolines and the times that you have come to expect from The Bones Brigade Audio Show. This time- with the help of our good friend, returning special guest and skate artist extraordinaire Ed Syder- we will be tackling the monumental, Powell-heavy Episode 2 of this storied series. With assists from Lance Mountain and producer Mark Hunt, we get to the bottom of the location of the fabled, recurring “in the skateshop” segment- and do some heavy analysis on even heavier sections featuring Ray Underhill, Tony Hawk, the LA Boys, Chuck Treece, Dennis Dragon and plenty more. Of course, we have dutifully uploaded the complete, chronologically-correct Episode 2 of SK8-TV to The Bones Brigade Audio Show YouTube Channel- you won't find it anywhere else- so be sure to check that out and follow along for maximum enjoyment. It's time to delve, once again, into that strange and enchanted era known as the late nineties with a play-by-play review of the often-overlooked Powell Skateboards '97 summer tour documentary, Strip Mall Heroes- and joining us for the occasion is none other than ripping skateboarder and thrift_store_paintings Instagram content creator, Rich Wilson! Much like Chaos and 8 before it, Strip Mall Heroes is a tale of a video in two forms: the officially-released version, and the lesser-known “rough cut” that was hastily shelved following the surprise departures of Mike Vallely, Stacy Lowery and Charlie Wilkins from the team prior to its release (never seen or heard of this version? Fret not, for it is now available for viewing over on The Bones Brigade Audio Show YouTube channel!) We get into it all- the tricks, the one-liners, the return of the Ripper intro, Ramp Master Pete, Cock Diesel and more- and cap it off with an epic mailbag. The fiftieth episode of The Bones Brigade Audio Show is roaring into your eardrums, and with it, the 10th installment of our vaunted Intelligence Report interview series! Joining us to celebrate the occasion is the one and only Colin McKay, who sat down with us in the studio for an incredible retrospective discussion on his formative career with Powell Peralta. We get into his origins of skateboarding in the Great White North, the various incarnations of the legendary Richmond Skate Ranch, the lasting impact of Expo '86, every single one of his multiple Bones Brigade video parts, touring with Tony Hawk, and everything in between. And- as if that weren't enough- our good friend (and episode 25 special guest) Anita Tessensohn dropped by to hang out for a bit and give the low-down on her recent surprise induction into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. Welcome, wall-jammers, to season three of The Bones Brigade Audio Show! We are kicking off 2024 with a bang as we welcome to the studio none other than the legendary Tony Hawk- to get into the weeds on his newest (and final) video part, Tapes You Leave Behind! This nearly five-minute banger is dripping with tributes to Tony's Powell Peralta past, with classic 'Brigade cameos and a soundtrack straight out of Skateboarding in the 80's framing what is unsurprisingly one of the most progressive vert skateboarding segments ever committed to film. We discuss all that- plus The Bones Brigade Experience, Thrasher's Skater Of The Year, tricks that didn't make the cut, Tony's favorite overall career video part, his favorite Powell graphic, the elusive location of the Blue Tile Lounge, and tons more that you will only find here at the BBAS. Season's greetings, dear listeners! The stockings are hung by the chimney with care and the eggnog is flowing here at the BBASHQ, because it's time for our highly-anticipated annual holiday episode! And really, what better way to ring in the yuletide cheer then by digging into the 1986 Unreel video; Holiday Havoc? Yes, this one might be a bit of a departure from our usual stringent subject matter, but fret not, for the ‘Brigade is well represented at this legendary NSA contest- featuring not just incredible vert runs by Mike McGill, Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain and Steve Caballero, but a flat bottom freestyle demo by Rodney Mullen and a guest host spot by Stacy Peralta himself. Joining us for this urethane journey is none other than Don Hoffman, heir to the fabled Upland Pipeline legacy and the head producer at Unreel Productions- the video arm of the Vision empire- back in their 1980's heyday. This contest was his brainchild, so naturally we picked that brain clean to get you all the deepest details on the ins and outs of this towering achievement in the annals of skate contest history. Now that the dust has settled on the first (and hopefully not the last) Bones Brigade Experience, we're back in the studio to recount this momentous celebration to you in our usual painstaking detail! This episode is a play in three acts- Part I is a summary of the trip out to SoCal by our own Larry Ransom, wherein you'll hear the entire tale of his ‘Experience experience from start to finish; Part II features an exclusive interview with BBEXP art director Matt “Air Matty” Lorentz, who spent the weeks leading up to the event delirious from paint fumes as he orchestrated the incredible recreation of Johnny Rad's Blue Tile Lounge, and Part III is just a fun bonus- the entire audio of the Q&A session with Tony, Lance, Tommy, Mike, Stevie, Rodney, George and Stacy, as it happened! Welcome back, curb-whackers, to another exciting episode of The Bones Brigade Audio Show! Back in 1996, after a multi-year hiatus, the powers that be determined that enough time had passed since their self-imposed moratorium began, and it was time to start bringing pro models back into the lineup at Powell Skateboards. As the skate world breathed a collective sigh of relief at this news, those same powers that be decided that the best way to reintroduce everyone to this welcomed return to form was to produce four individual videos on VHS that would be packaged free with each different board that went out. Joining us to review these very promotional videos- for Steve Caballero, Mike Vallely, Mike Santarossa, and Jason Ellis, respectively- is none other than the legendary pro skateboarder, podcaster, chef, and skate historian of the highest order, Clyde Singleton! Clyde joined us in the BBAS studio to go over each of these relatively rare video parts- all very different in their own right, from Cab's mini-documentary to Santarossa's mini-movie- with the usual fine-toothed comb. What secrets will be unearthed? What tales will be told? What tricks will be discussed? There's only one way to find out, so go dig your VCR out of that bin in the attic, plug it in and join us- shall you? The Bones Brigade Audio show is back in the Deep End for our second installment of the highly anticipated SK8-TV Files! This week, we'll be diving in to the inaugural episode of the show- the almost-lost-for-all-time pilot- which rolled like a seven ply steamroller into the homes of unsuspecting Nickelodeon viewers in the summer of 1990 and kicked off what would ultimately become a beloved, if short-lived institution in skateboarding. To assist Matt and Larry in this epic review, we're welcoming back the one and only Peter McKeon; our BBAS016 special guest, Powell Peralta alum, Emmy Award winning director and guy who happens to have his name in the credits of this very episode of SK8-TV. How'd he get there? How high can Natas ollie? What was the world premiere of Ban This really like? You're in for a real doozy this time around, fellow Brigadeers… because for this, our ninth installment of The Bones Brigade Audio Show Intelligence Report series, we are welcoming some seriously unbelievable guests- Columbus, Indiana's own Chris Long, Flynn Atkins, and Steve Thompson! If you're a fan of Ban This, you will undoubtedly recognize those first two names from the infamous “Video iT uR'SelF” segment; arguably, if not definitely the first-ever “sponsor me tape" footage to end up being featured in a mainstream skate video. We sat down with Chris, Flynn, and their skate/filming buddy Steve (who, unbeknownst to pretty much everyone, actually had the first trick in that section) for an in-depth discussion on how it all came to pass. From their earliest days of skating, the Midwest contest scene, filming and submitting the footage that eventually made it into Ban This, the mythical call from Stacy, reconnecting after three decades, and a ton more- we leave no stone unturned in this epic chat. Today, we are debuting a new segment here at The Bones Brigade Audio Show: the first installment of The SK8-TV files! Yes, by popular demand, we will be reviewing- sporadically- the entire thirteen-episode run of Nickelodeon's legendary SK8-TV! Back in the olden days, when new skate videos were a once or twice a year affair, this Stacy Peralta and Craig Stecyk-masterminded basic cable opus acted as a much-needed lifeline of fresh viewing content for the seven ply-starved youth of America. Hosted by the one and only Skatemaster Tate and a young Matthew Lynn (who, as Matthew Lillard, would go on to an esteemed Hollywood acting career), SK8-TV lasted but a single season, yet left an undeniable mark on the world of skateboarding for an entire generation. To kick us off on our adventure, we are welcoming to the BBAS studio, Mark Hunt; a lynchpin of the SK8-TV operation from its inception that acted in multiple integral roles including Producer, Filmer, Editor, Show Advisor, and everything in between. Mark was kind enough to give us (and you!) the entire behind-the-scenes rundown on the show, from beginning to middle to end. It's everything you could ever possibly want to know about SK8-TV and more- so grab a longboard, get yourself into the deep end and join us, shall you? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/larry-ransom/support

This video is widely considered a return to form for the brand, showcasing undeniably strong parts from a streamlined roster of riders, seamlessly blending game-changing newcomers like Gershon Mosley and Danny Wainwright with familiar faces like Mike Vallely and Steve Caballero. With Jayme and James here to fill you in on all the gory details, from team rider tales to edit-bay antics, this is one you have to hear to believe. Welcome back to the show! This week we're once again scratching our heads as we deal with another strange case of an alternate version of a Powell video that- much like the rough cut of “8” (see BBAS027)- somehow leaked its way out into the world. This time, it's an altered version of 1992's “Chaos”, featuring incredible, mostly-unseen parts by Eric Ricks, Mike Frazier, Paulo Diaz and others, along with numerous different songs and other randomly omitted oddities. How? Why? The mind boggles, but as always we do our best to break it all down.
