In this episode, Scott shares how the decision to initiate Pupy's relocation came together swiftly, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the entire team. Despite thorough preparation, the final moments—closing the crate door and Pupy's brief reaction—remained a poignant challenge.Pupy adapted remarkably well, and the impressive convoy, comprising 26 team members, embarked on the journey. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, the world watched as Pupy, taking her time, stepped out of the crate to begin her new life. Her departure from the ecoparque marked the end of 120 years of elephant captivity in Buenos Aires—a truly momentous occasion. The episode transcript can be found here.Email: We'd love to hear from you podcast@globalelephants.orgWho we are: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast, safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. Transparency in our work can be both a blessing and a challenge. This week, we catch up with Kat in Brazil and Scott in Argentina, where he is assisting both Kenya's (Mendoza) and Pupy's (Buenos Aires) caregiver teams with relocation training. Kat and Scott share how the introduction of a chain in Pupy's crate training has raised concerns among even long-time supporters. We also discuss why sedating an elephant during transport is not an option for GSE.The challenges of Tamy's situation are discussed in more detail. His enclosure is too small to accommodate both the crate and the necessary space for training. This limitation poses significant hurdles, as he is in a pit surrounded by high and thick concrete walls. The urgency of his situation is understood by all involved at the eco-park.The episode transcript can be found here.Email: We'd love to hear from you podcast@globalelephants.orgWho we are: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast, safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. Kat and Scott have said it time and time again—and Scott's recent return from Argentina without Pupy, the female African elephant at the Buenos Aires eco-parque, proves it: everything works on elephant time. We discuss how amazing Pupy is (of course), how she has developed since the death of her companion, Kuky, and how her insecurities about having the back gate of her transport crate closed made rescheduling her relocation necessary. Scott shares insights into her training, explains how her care team will incorporate his suggestions, and emphasises that, despite this small setback, everyone remains fully committed to Pupy's relocation. The episode transcript can be found here.Email: We'd love to hear from you podcast@globalelephants.orgWho we are: Global Sanctuary for Elephants exists to create vast, safe spaces for captive elephants, where they are able to heal physically and emotionally. In today's podcast, we say goodbye to Pocha, who had only a short time at the sanctuary. Her death, though sudden, was not entirely surprising, as there had been signs for a long time that something wasn't quite right. Kat and Scott take us back to October 2022 to share Pocha's final days and her passing. We also discuss how Guillermina and the other elephants reacted to her death, as well as the broader topic of elephants' capacity to mourn. Despite the sadness, there is an overwhelming sense of gratitude among Scott, Kat, and the entire team at ESB that Pocha lived long enough to witness her daughter discovering her birthright of freedom, forming new friendships, and becoming part of a herd. Pocha left this world in peace, knowing Guillermina was in the best care possible. Visit Pocha's memorial page. Happy New Year, everyone! The sanctuary is buzzing with activity as preparations continue to welcome its first African elephants. The crates have arrived in Argentina—but why and how do you draw blood from an elephant? What's a trunk wash? How are Kenya and Pupy being trained and prepared for their journey to Brazil? In this episode, Kat and Scott answer these questions and share behind-the-scenes stories of the logistics involved. We also catch up on the sanctuary's wildlife rehab program, including updates on Junior and his mom—both giant anteaters—and Pushy the tapir, a former rehab resident now thriving in the wild, who has taken a special interest in a young male, one of the newer arrivals to the rehab program. This GivingTuesday, we shared the exciting news that the importation permits for female African elephants Kenya and Pupy are finally in our hands, and we are taking the necessary steps for their relocation from Argentina to Brazil. To celebrate, we've paused our timeline on Pocha and Guillermina to introduce you to the first African elephants we will welcome to sanctuary. Kat and Scott discuss what they know—and what's still unknown—about Kenya and Pupy, as well as how African elephants differ significantly in character from Asian elephants. This often leads to their behavior being misinterpreted as aggressive by zookeepers when they are simply more high-strung than their Asian counterparts. Exciting times lie ahead as everything is set in motion to bring these majestic ladies to their new home in Brazil! Thank you for being part of our herd this year. Wishing you a wonderful New Year's Eve—whether you fall asleep before midnight like Scott or burn the midnight oil like Kat. We can't wait to connect again in 2025! We have to know their normal (Pocha & Guille Part 6) This week's podcast dives deeper into Pocha and Guille's dysfunctional relationship. Drawing on decades of experience, Kat and Scott discuss how the two elephants' bond was shaped by an unnatural life lacking the mental and physical stimulation essential for elephants. We also explore Pocha's health and how she presented herself to the team after arriving at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil (ESB). Scott and Kat highlight the importance of daily observation at the sanctuary to understand each elephant's baseline behavior, allowing subtle changes that signal physical or mental discomfort to be detected early. — Shop for the holiday season at our online shop & support our work. In today's podcast, we explore Pocha and Guillermina's first days and weeks at the sanctuary. Scott recalls how the barn became their safe haven—a home base they returned to whenever the outside world became overwhelming. We discuss their introductions to the other elephants and how Guillermina's dominance and aggression toward Pocha, shaped by their 23 years in an unnatural concrete pit, contrasted sharply with natural elephant dynamics. This double rescue was unique, not just because it involved a mother and daughter but also due to the restrictive, man-made environment they endured. Scott and Kat share touching stories about how, with the space and autonomy of sanctuary, both elephants began rediscovering what it truly means to be an elephant. — Shop for the holiday season at our online shop & support our work. We start off this week's episode with the recent news of Kuky, the female African elephant at the Buenos Aires EcoPark, who passed away suddenly. Scott shares more details about how long the permit process has taken for the three female African elephants waiting to come to the sanctuary. Then we go back to May 2022, when Pocha and Guille arrived at the sanctuary but weren't quite ready to leave their transport crates. After decades in a sterile, subterranean exhibit, the sights, sounds, and smells that mother and daughter experienced during those first hours at sanctuary must have been overwhelming. On October 29, 2024, Aalborg Zoo in Denmark announced that they had euthanized their two female African elephants, Tanja and Mai. Tanja was ill and unresponsive to treatment, but Mai, apart from an arthritic ankle, was otherwise healthy. Yet, the zoo decided to euthanize her as well. In this episode, we discuss the zoo's justification for this decision and explore the arguments they put forward. This emotional topic weighs heavily on all of us advocating for sanctuary and better lives for captive elephants. Transcript can be found here. It's finally time to load mother and daughter and literally take them from darkness into light. Scott reveals the final challenges the team faced upon arriving in Mendoza, including incomplete crate training and the need to keep the exact loading date secret, as not all zoo staff were happy to see Pocha and Guillermina leave. The team embarked on their long 5-day journey from Argentina to Brazil. While Pocha and Guille did remarkably well, it was the human elements that posed the greatest challenges, as usual, Scott recalls. Watch all videos of Pocha and Guillermina's relocation. How are elephants trained, and how do you train two elephants who have never been separated before? Scott and Kat share insights into the training of Pocha & Guillermina, working within the limitations of enclosure size, weather, and the resources available at the zoo. Relocations are often far from straightforward, and GSE faces severe challenges as they get entangled in a game of politics and personal greed when export permits are withheld, with third parties suddenly claiming that Pocha and Guillermina should remain in Argentina. Join us as we talk about Pocha and Guillermina, the mother and daughter rescued in May 2022 from the Mendoza Eco-Parque in Argentina. Kat and Scott recall their first encounters with these two elephants and the challenges of preparing them for their journey to a new life at the Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Amidst the zoo's transformation into an eco-parque, Scott highlights the challenges of training two elephants who had never been separated before, while also navigating the obstacles posed by bureaucratic hurdles. Once again, the GSE team rose to the challenge, paving the way for this double rescue while also managing to treat a tusk infection in Kenya, the zoo's female African elephant. In this episode we conclude our series on Bambi. Kat and Scott recall how her first months revolved around building friendships. We talk about her role in the trio that were eventually nicknamed Powerpuff Girls, and how after her first rejection by Mara, she learnt to respect the emotional space of the other elephants. We catch up in the present and talk about Bambi's rise in insecurity due to her gradual vision loss, but stay on a positive note as we learn how Maia has stepped up to be there for her. There's also a feathery update on the seven barn owls in the care of ESB. The episode transcript can be found here. Here we are, ringing in 40 years of the McTwist; perhaps the first trick in skateboarding history to achieve “household name” status. With the possible exception of the 900, is there a single skateboarding trick more legendary? A single maneuver that has been requested more by crowds of delirious, sunburnt demo-goers? We don't think so- and joining us here in the BBAS studio to back up this inarguable claim is renowned skate historian, author, artist, and Berlin Skateboard Museum curator Jürgen Blümlein! We talked with Jürgen about his involvement in the McTwist's 40th anniversary celebration, his collaboration with Mike McGill and Vans on their upcoming limited-edition commemorative Sk8-Hi colorway, and we get deep into the trick's rich four-decade history all the way back to that fateful evening at the Swedish summer camp in 1984. This week we take a detour to talk about the individual recovery stories of our elephants. Sparked by comments from supporters on videos of Guillermina and her interactions with the other elephants, Kat reminds us that, just like with humans, no recovery from trauma is linear or the same. We must not deny each elephant their right to recovery, however different and complex it might be. Guillermina was born into one of the most deprived environments Kat and Scott have ever witnessed in their careers. We talk about how far she has come in the past two years at the sanctuary, and her trauma of not only living in a concrete pit for 22 years but also losing her mother after only 5 months at the sanctuary. Listen to Guille being more vocal in this video: https://globalelephants.org/guillermina-is-gradually-more-vocal/ The episode transcript can be found here. Arriving at the zoo in Ribeirao Preto Scott recalls how much Bambi had changed not only physically but also mentally since he and Kat met her in 2013. She was curious but was spooked by the slightest noise and returned to the darkness of her barn. Scott and Dr. Trish let things flow at Bambi's pace, letting her know that everyone is listening to her, seeing her insecurities, and respecting her need to take things slower. Eventually in the crate, the team set off on the short 1-2 day trip to the sanctuary. Kat recalls Bambi stepping off the crate very quickly and like all arrivals taking a dust bath embracing the sounds and smells of her new home. We also talk a little bit more about Maison, the zoo's second elephant, who is still there. Check out our blog posts & videos on Bambi's rescue. The episode transcript can be found here. Bambi is the seventh elephant to call Elephant Sanctuary Brazil her home. Confiscated from the circus, she was first sent to the Leme Botanical Gardens and later on to a zoo in Ribierão Preto; both cities are located in São Paulo state, Brazil. Scott recalls how they first heard about Bambi during their exploratory trip to Brazil in 2013, and how the Leme Botanical Gardens asked them to take Bambi right then. But at the time, the soon-to-emerge non-profit GSE didn't have a property. Bambi and GSE's paths cross again several years later, when a judge rules that Bambi is to be sent to sanctuary. With an increase in the tension between Bambi and the zoo's other elephant, Maison, Bambi needed a more permanent solution. The episode transcript can be found here. In the first of our “Brazilian edition” episodes - our host Nadia is currently in Brazil at the sanctuary - we pick up from last time and continue to talk about Mara's health. While her GI issues seemed to be getting better and her poop improving in quantity, size & consistency, she started to go off her food. After weeks of limited food intake, Mara laid down, making a large round shape in her abdomen visible. With both Bambi and Rana at her side, Mara recovers and is able to stand again. Today, she is doing well but, as Kat explains, she is one of the elephants they monitor the closest. Nadia also offers listeners an insight into her daily work at the sanctuary, giving you all a look behind the scenes. The episode transcript can be found here. Decades of unnatural captivity have left their mark on Mara, and in this week's episode we talk in detail about elephant poop! From the differences in consistency of African and Asian elephant poop, to size and smell, all topics are on the table. Kat and Scott explain how Mara's stool was not normal for an Asian elephant, showing that she had GI (gastrointestinal) issues going on. Scott recalls the amazement of Mara's zoo care team when noticing a change in her digestion just a few days after arriving at the sanctuary. Not only did Mara's physical health begin to improve, but her mental health did as well. Her stereotypic swaying stopped almost immediately. With her new friend, Rana, at her side, Kat and Scott recollect Mara's first days and months of discovery in her new home, Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. A few days after Mara's transport crate arrives at the Buenos Aires Zoo, Argentina and Brazil close their borders due to pandemic regulations. Now, the GSE and zoo teams face the daunting task of transporting Mara to the sanctuary amidst uncertainty. While Mara's care team at the zoo works to acclimate her to the crate under remote guidance from Scott and Kat, all involved also must consider the well-being of the human teams. With a journey spanning 1,710 miles (approx. 2,600 km), the logistics of stops and provisions for both elephants and humans require careful planning. Despite the challenges, the caravan embarks on its journey to Brazil, eventually arriving exhausted but elated at the sanctuary. There, a weary yet joyful Mara eagerly emerges from her crate and indulges in a long-awaited dust bath. The episode transcript can be found here. Mara's story is typical of many captive elephants. Taken from the wild, most likely India, she was sold to the circus industry where she was forced to perform in several different circuses. After decades, she was confiscated under the new progressive legislation in South America. Every elephant adapts differently to this unnatural life of captivity, and Scott describes how Mara vented her frustration in aggressive behaviors which continued in the zoo. The Buenos Aires Zoo, Argentina was not suited to care for her properly, which included Maia being kept together with two female African elephants, Kuky and Pupy. We talk about the differences in these two elephant species, and how they communicate both physically and auditorily very differently. In their transformation to an eco park, the zoo and the team of GSE start working towards her transfer to sanctuary - yet the pandemic in 2020 creates unforeseen obstacles. Read more about Mara's story on our website. The episode transcript can be found here. We start off this week's episode by catching up on the various wildlife rehab animals under the care of the GSE team, including Stan, the burrowing owl, and his partner—perhaps even boyfriend? Scott and Kat share anecdotes of Lady and her cautious, yet hesitant interactions with the other sanctuary elephants, which, however, has never involved any physical contact. We delve further into Lady's ongoing health concerns and discuss why foot-related issues used to be the primary cause of death among zoo elephants in the U.S. Despite captivity having taken a cruel toll on Lady, Kat and Scott speak in admiration of her resilience and zest for life, as she ventures into the farthest corners of the sanctuary. After a peaceful first night at the sanctuary, the gates of the barn are opened the next day for Lady to explore her new home. Scott and Kat continue to explain Lady's way of communicating and how, still today, she expects their full presence and attention when being with her. Listening and paying attention to the most subtle forms of communication is the foundation of sanctuary and trust building. We fast forward to the present day, talking about Lady's recent health issues and dive into the topic of osteomyelitis, a degenerative bone disease from which Lady is suffering. At the zoo, Lady continues to explore the transport container, but sets clear boundaries towards Scott and the team by slamming her head or trunk against the gate in order to keep them away. Lady was labeled an aggressive elephant, but Kat explains that Lady never used physical aggression towards humans, but towards inanimate objects such as gates and fences. Scott recalls Lady's preference to be left alone, seeming to merely tolerate the humans around her. We follow the caravan as they leave the zoo for a long road trip across Brazil. While Lady is calm and a total rock star, the team faces logistical challenges along the way. But as we know from other rescues, they immediately get to work to solve these issues to finally arrive at the sanctuary. We also talk more about Lady's history in captivity and how it affected both her emotional and physical health prior to her rescue. In this week's podcast, we introduce Lady, the 5th elephant to come to SEB. Her story is all too familiar: stolen from the wild, she was put into the circus, later confiscated under new legislation in South America, and ultimately moved to a zoo ill-equipped to care for her—especially her serious foot health issues. We pick up her story as Scott recalls his first introduction to her through video, and how miserable and aggressive she appeared. Over a year later, Scott and the team go to the zoo to bring Lady back to the sanctuary. While Lady eagerly enters the transport crate to explore, Scott recalls the dangerous incident when he touched a live electric wire that was supposed to be shut off. Like previous rescues, the team has to navigate around miscommunications and legal disputes, always keeping the well-being of Lady and her needs at the forefront of their efforts. “Sanctuary is the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows,” as Scott shared in a previous episode. In this week's emotional episode, Scott recalls opening the gates to Ramba's yard after her first night at the sanctuary. Witnessing her step out and explore filled everyone with hope and excitement. Later, Ramba had her first encounter with another elephant in decades: a thrilled Rana eagerly awaited her new sister at the fenceline. While everyone anticipated this moment, Kat sheds light on the pressure of expectations for both elephants and humans alike. Scott marvels at Ramba's swift transition into sanctuary life, the quickest he's ever witnessed in an elephant. Her journey at Parque Safari, under the care of dedicated keepers, likely played a role in this remarkable adaptation. Kat reflects on the profound connection elephants have with nature. Perhaps deep down, Ramba sensed her limited time and immersed herself fully into sanctuary life, cherishing every moment. Visit Ramba's Memorial Page. We left you with two cliffhangers last time, so let's dive in today by learning more about the two new infant anteaters, a part of GSE's wildlife rehab program. Despite being two different species (a giant anteater and a collared anteater), these youngsters stick together, exploring their enclosure. Stan, the burrowing owl, has a new friend, and the highly endangered crowned solitary (Chaco) eagle we discussed in December arrived safely several weeks ago and is building up strength as it flies around the extensive flight cage, the construction of which caused Scott many sleepless nights. We then rewind to October 2019. It's the day of Ramba's flight, and it's a beautiful day. Our gentle grandma decides to explore her yard and enjoy the warm sun. Fortunately, Scott and the team persuade her to enter her transport crate. Arriving at the airport a few hours later, Scott recalls how Ramba breezed through security and onto the plane faster than her human team. The flight is relaxed, providing Scott and Laura a chance to catch up on some much-needed sleep for the long road trip ahead. Upon arrival in Brazil, Ramba was once again faster out of the plane than the people and already waiting for Scott and Laura. The journey home can begin. The episode transcript can be found here. In our first episode of the year, we delve into the latest happenings at the sanctuary, including a recent fire that originated from a neighboring property. While not on the scale of California wildfires, it was a significant incident that rallied the local community together in a collective effort to extinguish the flames. In our elephant update, our focus extends beyond the individual progress of each individual as we explore the captivating dynamics within the entire herd. Witnessing their collective development and how they overcome the traumas of their past is truly fascinating. Moving on, we pick up the thread of Ramba's final journey from Parque Safari in Chile to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Upon our arrival in Chile, Scott shares concerns about Ramba's energy level and overall health. This raises critical questions about her readiness for the journey that lies ahead. Supported by Ecopolis, dedicated caregivers, veterinarians, and politicians, a decision is made to proceed. Now we just have to entice Ramba to leave her warm barn and enter the transport crate. While road transports can be rescheduled, the plane will leave with or without Ramba! Season's greetings, dear listeners! The stockings are hung by the chimney with care and the eggnog is flowing here at the BBASHQ, because it's time for our highly-anticipated annual holiday episode! And really, what better way to ring in the yuletide cheer then by digging into the 1986 Unreel video; Holiday Havoc? Yes, this one might be a bit of a departure from our usual stringent subject matter, but fret not, for the ‘Brigade is well represented at this legendary NSA contest- featuring not just incredible vert runs by Mike McGill, Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain and Steve Caballero, but a flat bottom freestyle demo by Rodney Mullen and a guest host spot by Stacy Peralta himself. Joining us for this urethane journey is none other than Don Hoffman, heir to the fabled Upland Pipeline legacy and the head producer at Unreel Productions- the video arm of the Vision empire- back in their 1980's heyday. This contest was his brainchild, so naturally we picked that brain clean to get you all the deepest details on the ins and outs of this towering achievement in the annals of skate contest history. Wait- did you hear sleigh bells just now? Was that the click-clack of Mini Rats on the rooftop? As always, there's only one way to find out- so join us, shall you? Today is our final podcast for this year. We start off by talking about the sanitation and health requirements needed for Ramba before being able to move her to Brazil. When all of the details were ironed out, Ramba's quarantine period could begin. With growing autonomy, Kat recalls how, true to her cheeky grandma style, Ramba let her care team know when she would permit blood draws (from her ear) or not. So not to leave you on a cliffhanger, as there is a lot to talk about Ramba's relocation via plane from Chile to Brazil, we switch to the wildlife rehab animals currently under the care of the sanctuary. From a vision-impaired owl, to macaws, and an injured anteater and her baby, the team is busy ensuring they all get the best care possible to aid their speedy recovery and rewilding.
In this week's podcast, Kat and Scott talk about the challenges of managing the care of Ramba with her remote team in Chile. We cover the years of Ramba's stay at Parque Safari in Chile, including the nonstop noise from the park's Dinosaur ride next to Ramba's enclosure. Additionally, we delve into the charming anecdotes of cute grandma Ramba, who knows exactly how to charm her doting care team. At the same time, Global Sanctuary for Elephants, then still a very young non-profit organization, is in need of funds not only for Ramba's care but also to build fencing to be able to welcome their first elephants and expand the habitat for Ramba. And if that isn't enough, driving Ramba over the Andes is not an option, so she will need to be flown to Brazil. As we have learned over the past episodes, there is never a dull moment in the lives of Kat and Scott. We end the episode with Scott & Kat talking about current events at the sanctuary.
We discuss the most frustrating aspect of Ramba's rescue- Why did it take so long? We dive into details about permits, including those required internationally by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) but also within Brazil (IBAMA). There is no classification for sanctuaries in Brazil, and no recent elephant imports, which means standards and protocols need to be created. Blood tests on Ramba show she is suffering from the early stages of kidney failure, which require a strict diet and the use of different modalities to support her body. Ramba's care team is dedicated to giving their grandma elephant the best care possible while - unbeknownst to her - everybody is doing what they can to get her to the sanctuary.
Ramba (Part 2) - Today we dive straight into resolving the cliffhanger we left you with last time. Scott admits that talking about Ramba's rescue from the circus in our last episode really brought up old memories about how difficult the entire operation really was. Under the circumstances, Ramba was fairly relaxed. The rescue team and the circus people were each waiting in their corners for the judge's ruling to arrive. And when it does, it is a challenge: the colonel of the military police is being sent to oversee the rescue, and the team only has until the end of the day to get Ramba to load into the transport container. Tensions rise, the sun begins to set, and the colonel taps on his watch indicating what everyone knows. And then, Ramba effortlessly backs into the containers and relief washes over the rescue team. With the final challenge of loading the container onto the truck, Ramba leaves the circus premises for the last time, with the police following closely behind. Arriving at the Park Safari, a few more small hurdles need to be overcome before Ramba can be released into her 2-acre enclosure, where she starts to graze, dust herself with dirt, and finally lies down to sleep. Although not at the sanctuary yet, this is her new home. Episode transcript: can be found here. Ramba (Part 1) - Known as the “Last circus elephant in Chile”, Ramba was confiscated from a circus due to neglect and abuse. Yet, with nowhere to go, she remains in the custody of the circus. Scott & Kat recall how her rescue really must be credited to the small animal welfare organization, Ecopolis, who had been campaigning for Ramba's release for years before Scott & Kat arrived on the scene to assist with her actual relocation. Ramba's move from the circus to her temporary home at Parque Safari was indeed the most difficult and challenging so far. Scott describes how the judge's ruling left them with only 4 days to load Ramba into a less-than-ideal transport crate. We end the episode on a cliffhanger as the tension between rescuers and the circus rises and threatens to turn into a physical fight. The episode transcript can be found here. Episode 18 Rana (Part 3) - In our third and final episode on Rana, Scott & Kat share how they truly noticed the lessons Rana had learned about friendship when the sanctuary's fourth elephant, Ramba, arrived. Eager not to make the same mistakes as with Guida & Maia, we talk about how Rana kept her exuberance to herself, not wanting to touch Ramba and possibly annoy or scare her. Yet Ramba was looking for guidance to know how to behave from the elephants already at the sanctuary. It was Maia who broke the ice by touching Ramba first; with this clear sign, Rana opened up to embrace her new sister with much love and affection. Kat recalls how Ramba, who was well over 60 years old, explored every part of the sanctuary, often leaving Rana behind when she couldn't keep up. A beautiful friendship between the two grandmother elephants touched the hearts of all at the sanctuary. Episode transcript: can be found here. Rana (Part 2) - One of our listeners sent us the question, “How do elephants feel about the humans they interact with?” In this episode, we talk about facilitating what an elephant needs on an emotional and physical level without crossing the boundaries of forcing ourselves onto them. Scott and Kat recall how Maia and Guida didn't ask for much affection from their humans - possibly because of their strong relationship - while Rana is an elephant who does ask for physical contact before her time in the treatment chute. Again, it comes down to reading the room, listening, observing, and seeing what an elephant needs on a daily basis for their recovery. We also talk about how things changed after Guida's sudden death and how Rana had begun to understand what being a true friend was as she put aside her needs in order to be there for Maia on her terms. Episode 16 Rana (Part 1) - Meet Rana (pronounced Hana), the sanctuary's third elephant and also a former circus elephant. She arrived at the sanctuary on Dec 21, 2018. Scott recalls how they heard rumours of a solitary elephant living on the grounds of a hotel on the east coast of Brazil. Luckily, the new hotel owner wanted a better life for Rana and so, after a short period of getting used to the transport crate, Scott, Rana, and their team set off on the long journey home. Solitary for most of her life, Rana embraced sanctuary and her new sisters. Upon her arrival, Guida and Maia were strongly bonded and not quite ready to let their exuberant new sister into the mix. Being shunned initially by the two, Rana learned lessons about how to interact with other elephants and is now the most influential elephant in her own unique passive way - and she has become the elephant who assists new arrivals with easing into a new life at sanctuary. Physically, Rana came with an extremely infected vulva which needed immediate attention and she has a fused left elbow from an accident from her circus years. Watch the first video of Rana's rescue trip here. Read more about Rana on our website. The episode transcript can be found here. Guida & Maia (Part 4) - In this week's podcast we start off by saying “THANK YOU” to all of our wonderful listeners & introduce the independent Facebook support group ‘Friends of Global Sanctuary for Elephants'. We talk about the connection of physical and emotional healing of Guida & Maia. The sanctuary's diverse topography of hills, creeks, and grasslands doesn't only stimulate muscle building, but also reconnects long unused and shut down senses of sight, smell, and hearing, all of which builds confidence. Scott shares how Guida & Maia built a slide down to the creek despite there being an easier way to cross. Scott: “Sanctuary is the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,” and we end talking about Guida's sudden passing on June 25, 2019. We do finish on a brighter note, introducing Rana, the next elephant to be rescued, who we will talk more about in our next episode. Join Friends of Global Sanctuary for Elephants on Facebook.
