AIDC Interview: Queens of Concrete director Eliza Cox on putting Aussie sports on screen

With her debut feature documentary film Queens of Concrete, Eliza Cox takes audiences on a seven year journey with three skateboarders: Ava Godfrey, Charlotte Heath, and Hayley Wilson. They each embrace a different style of skateboarding, with street and park being the two styles that are featured at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. It's that 2020 Olympics that the girls have their sights set on, with Eliza following their journey from the skateparks of Melbourne to the sponsored events in London and LA, to boarding schools dedicated to bringing up the next generation of skaters. There's an inherent drama to skateboarding - you never know if the skater is going to fall, what they're going to pull off, and how they're going to take a risky jump - and that's paired well with the inherent drama of being a teenager turning into an adult. Or, in the case of Charlotte, a kid turning into a teenager. Each of the girls has their own life journey to follow, and Eliza's dedicated observational lens follows them in a caring and considered manner. This is not a director simply documenting the lives of their subjects, but supporting their journey in an empathetic manner.Queens of Concrete moves in the same vein as the great skating docos of the turn of the millennium, with Eliza noting the impact that Dogtown and Z-Boys had on her work. As a viewer, I couldn't help but feel the pull of Eddie Martin's excellent All This Mayhem, a film which also hails from the streets of Melbourne. Either way, the impact of sports documentaries is a strong one on Eliza's creative vision.I caught up with Eliza ahead of the AIDC panel Levelling the Playing Field: Celebrating Trailblazers in Sports Docs, where she joins fellow documentarians Frances Elliott, who co-directed Renee Gracie: Fireproof, and Marlee Silva, of the upcoming film Skin in the Game. In the following interview, we talk about her journey into filmmaking, what it means to be a supportive director, the choice behind making a sports film about girls or a film about girls who skate, and a lot more.If you're in Naarm-Melbourne this weekend, then make yourself known and head along to ACMI on Monday 3 March where you can catch Levelling the Playing Field, alongside a stack more great panels and events at the Australian International Documentary Conference. In this episode, Kelley Baker AKA The Angry Filmmaker and I explore two films by filmmaker Stacy Peralta: Dogtown & Z-Boys (2001) and Riding Giants (2004).Having no personal experience with skateboarding or surfing, it was eye-opening to have a front row seat to the movements presented in both films. Kelley and I dive into these films and talk about a range of topics including corporatization of sports, filmmaking from the perspective of the insider versus the outsider, why style will always be favorable over slick and shiny aesthetics, and the value of falls and failures. While there are nuggets of wisdom throughout this conversation, I think this quote from Kelley sets the stage for this episode, specifically regarding creativity: "When you have no money and you don't have a lot of options, you become creative."

A thought-provoking discussion recorded 28 June 2024, exploring the evolving landscape for Gen Z boys. Recent studies show significant divergence in views on gender among young people (16-19 years). While many Gen Zs embrace progressive beliefs, a considerable number of young men still feel pressured to conform to traditional roles and behaviours such as stoicism and being the breadwinner. In a recent survey, one in five men overall said it's harder to be a man than a woman today (emerging-tensions.pdf, kcl.ac.uk). This tension can be heightened by online content, commonly known as the ‘manosphere', promoting more aggressive masculinity. Despite these pressures, Gen Z is at the forefront of redefining masculinity to be more inclusive and emotionally expressive. Social media and pop culture also has a pivotal role to play in promoting these trends, supporting young men to value vulnerability and empathy as key aspects of manhood. Our panel includes: - Daniel Guinness, Managing Director at Beyond Equality – an organisation supporting men and boys to develop healthier identities and behaviours through conversation - Kirsty Ruthven, Head of Education at Lifting Limits – an organisation developing a whole-school approach to gender equality through education and voices from the youth

Written, produced and directed by James Sweigert, this film puts Sacramento skateboarding on the map and gives long overdue credit to the N-Men, a 1975 response to the Z-Boys from Dogtown. Synopsis: In 1975 a diverse crew of Sacramento skateboarders met at a paved embankment underneath the I-5 freeway in Old Sacramento. They had no idea their underground movement would have a global impact on the world of skateboarding. 11 years in the making, this film gives us a raw, intimate look inside the N-Men, a Sacramento skateboard crew who have grown into an all encompassing family throughout Northern California and beyond. Several of these men and women went on to become world champion skateboarders. The film explores the N-Men's influence on the greatest skateboarders of the past 50 years and their contribution to competitive skateboarding including creating the X-Games for ESPN and having played a part in collaborating with Tony Hawk to get skateboarding into the Olympics for the first time in 2021. Their story has never been told, until now. The film features a treasure chest of never-before-seen footage and photos of the Northern California skate scene which the filmmaker spent a decade mining out of basements, attics and garages. The film features voice over from actor Josh Brolin, also executive producer, and features interviews with professional skateboarders including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Stev Caballero and many more Cheryl Bryant Bruce M.D. (thecelebritydoc.net)

The Next Reel Film Podcast Master Feed

Dogtown and Z-Boys was a successful documentary when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, and did great for itself in its theatrical release afterward. That success spurred Stacy Peralta, the director of the film and one of the Z-boy skateboarders featured in the doc, to write a fictional telling of the story to be made as a feature film. That script went through several director's hands – David Fincher and Fred Durst, specifically – before landing with Catherine Hardwicke. She had had great success a few years earlier with her debut film Thirteen (which we talked about on the show here). So how does this hold up as her sophomore effort? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Sports series with Hardwicke's 2005 film Lords of Dogtown. We talk about skateboarding, biopics, and more as it relates to Lords of Dogtown. We both recount our own beginnings with skateboards. Were we ever any good? No. But certainly they were foundational memories for us. That gives us a jumping off point to get into this film as we look at how our three central characters – Jay, Tony, and Stacy – find their connection to skateboarding in the 70s and turn it into a sensation. How does the story work for us? It's very much a biopic. That's taken both for the bad and the good. It tells the story about interesting characters, but the beats feel very standard and expected. Is there something Hardwicke could've done or is this the best that could've come from Peralta's script? And that's another point we discuss – can a biopic script written by one of the characters in the story every really be more than gentle with its story? This is a common complaint with many musician biopics these days because the featured figure(s) is (are) alive and producing, writing, or giving their blessing to the project. Can Peralta be objective? It doesn't feel that way. Still, the film is full of energy. That certainly feels like something Hardwicke brings to her early films. And the actors bring it as well. Emile Hirsch, John Robinson, Victor Rasuk, Heath Ledger – so many faces in this film that warrant calling out. Because they do tremendous work throughout the film, whether their scripted parts shine or not. In the end, though, it's hard to separate what's great in this film with the problems we have with the script. As strong as the performances and direction are, the story always feels a bit flat. But it's still interesting and entertaining. So check it out. It's worth looking at, and you can check another off your bucket list. Then tune in to this week's show! A drought in 1970s Southern California has an unexpected side effect: as people empty their swimming pools, a group of teen surfers from the Dogtown area of Venice Beach move in with skateboards, and a new sport is born. Based on a true story, this film follows "Z-Boys" skate team members Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch), plus manager Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger), as their fearless "pool surfing" leads to fame, fortune -- and misfortune.   Nathan is BACK!  Whew!  Nathan brings us his "Surfer" genre with 2005's Biographical drama Lords of Dogtown.  The boys look back on their own experiences or non-experiences with surfing and skateboarding alike while reviewing this film.  The non-pragmatical elements of the film where we see the real life instances of these young men is often under appreciated when you think about the world of skating today. His intention was to produce an inexpensive promotional video which skate shop owners could play in their stores to demonstrate Powell•Peralta skateboards.
