Connecting with nature, European cafe vibes, and 17th century counterpoint. Jared Mattson (Mattson 2, Jared Mattson) "The Mattson 2's recent output has found them (jazz twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson) evoking the lush and carefree soundscapes of Japanese city pop. Their 2018 release Vaults of Eternity: Japan was full of loving reinterpretations of songs by artists like Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and while their latest LP Paradise doesn't indulge in sonic excess, it does capture that breezy, sun-filled vibe. It charted Billboard at #1 Contemp. Jazz, #2 Jazz, #20 Alternative and landed features in the Washington Post and Pitchfork. On toady's podcast I speak with Photographer, Musician, and professional skateboarder Ray Barbee. Ray Barbee has exhibited his photography around the world, done collaborations with Leica Cameras, Ilford Film, and Van Shoe's to name a few. Beyond his work with photography Ray is a touring musician and has been a professional skateboarder for over 25 years. Ray started his skate career riding for Powell Peralta skateboards and had skate parts in Powell Peralta's legendary videos “Ban This” and “Public Domain”. Ray is someone who I've been a fan of since I was kid watching his skating and more recently I have become a fan of his music and photography so I was excited to get a chance to speak with him, so I hope you enjoy and thanks for listening. Ray Barbee is not only one of the most influential street skateboarders in history, he's an amazing photographer, musician, and creative thinker, as well as one of the most frequently requested guests I get from fans of the show. As a young kid growing up in the 80's in San Jose, CA, Ray was introduced to skateboarding during the heyday of backyard ramps and the vert skating kings that had ruled the era. But before long, street skating started to take hold and Ray found a more accessible form of skateboarding that he and his friends felt they could mold with their own style. Ray was quickly noticed by one of the biggest names in the business and joined the legendary Powell Peralta team and started working closely with Stacy Peralta and some of his skateboard heroes. The rest is history, and he would go on to to have an amazing career as a professional skater that continues to this day. During those years of traveling the globe, Ray realized he was missing an opportunity to capture the life he was living and embraced the craft of photography, spurred on by so many of his photographer friends he knew through the skate world. During our conversation we talk about what it was like to tour the world as a professional skateboarder, his early influences in photography, what made him embrace the Leica M6 and black and white film, what it's been like having a relationship with such a legendary camera brand, and the advice he gives to others who yearn for a more creative existence. The Mattson 2 and Emma-Jean Thackray (with Hillary Donnell) Keeping the fresh and bold at the forefront, and our hats off to the legends, The Mattson 2 have been making waves with their dreamy guitar and drum-based music for awhile. Rather than try and describe their sound, just looking at their frequent collaborators speaks volumes; Ray Barbee, Money Mark, Toro Y Moi, and Tommy Guerrero to name a few. With the brothers Mattson's latest take on one of music's most sacred cows, they may have topped themselves (as well as rattled a few cages). That's right, they've gone for John Coltrane and, wait for it... his masterwork A Love Supreme! The Mattson 2 really give it a piece of their creative minds, building a lush adventure and done with loving respect, in a way Coltrane would have given thumbs up to. One of the most compelling composers working today takes cues not only from the jazz masters, but from the dancefloor and the English tradition of Collier brass bands. That artists name is Emma Jean Thackray. She's one of the shining stars of the jazz-not-jazz renaissance that's currently happening. She'll make you don your thinking cap, get you out of your seat and onto your feet! Major Scale contributor Hillary Donnell returns with a friendly chat she and Thackray had recently. ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. ABOUT KYLE EAGLE (Host): Kyle Eagle has been a contributing writer and producer for the NPR-WBGO, WUCF, WPRK, Wax Poetics, The Orlando Weekly, Artbourne, and The Fiscal Times, as well as several music and film releases- Light in the Attic's documentary "This Is Gary McFarland", and an upcoming film on composer Jack Nietzsche. Recordings- Call Me-Jack Wilson, Live at the Penthouse, Grachan Moncur III, Chico Hamilton, and Andy Bey. ABOUT CHRIS BARANYI (Producer): Chris Baranyi is a sound engineer and music producer. He splits his time between designing AV systems for theme parks and recording music. Chris has worked with many Orlando area musicians with backgrounds in jazz, fusion, hip-hop, funk, new age, and classical. Some of which have been featured on NPR's Echoes. His passion includes jazz, vintage microphones, and hot
Desiree welcomed Pep Williams, Dogtown Skateboarder and renowned photographer at the Dash Radio studios where his work form Offset is still on display and a special re-air of Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor. From his first shoot onto runways to Offset, and everywhere in between. In addition, two amazing images which will be going up for sale, before he destroys the files. QB Tyrod Tayler; since his arrival to the Chargers, I have been impressed with his ability on the field, his work ethic and the way he carries himself. I had a few minutes to speak with him. On this day, he was the last one off the field as he continued to do sprints and his own training way after everyone had left the field, personifying what I have taken note of. Skateboarding and music have been forever intertwined. This week’s guest, Ray Barbee, while best known as a pioneering skateboarder, is also a serious musician. Ray tells Joe about: coming from a musical family; being consumed by skateboarding; going pro and sustaining a 30+ year career; his parallel passion for music and photography; and raising a family.
Ray Barbee tells his story about the first time he wanted to ride a skateboard. There are tales of important moments, good times, and in the midst of this you get to know the man who has shaped culture through his skateboarding, artistry, and music. Thanks, Ray! In this episode we give our very preliminary thoughts on the Freestyle World Roundup that happened this week in Vancouver. We discuss some Eastern European freestyler whose name we do not know but we all agree rips (or at least did rip in the late 1980s), we talk boards, high trucks, and lastly the boys give Bob some advice on learning M-80 Kickflips. The video mentioned in this podcast – regarding the dude riding freestyle on an 1980s street board, can be found here: http://youtu.be/Fvaryy8eAYc The great Ray Barbee, whom Bob mentions during the show, can be seen in classic part in Powell's Ban This video, here: http://youtu.be/AKT0T_DJ80U Tony filmed a bunch of M-80 variations as supplementary material for this episode. Very nice stuff! http://youtu.be/elykMLy4SRs Thanks for listening. Bob
Well it has been a while, hasn't it? Our heartfelt apologies for leaving you without your fix for so long. But the Memekast is officially back in action, and to kick off 2009, we brought the HEAT. Representing Daly City Records in California, we're delighted to present 40 minutes of all new, unreleased material from Mochipet. If you haven't heard of Mochipet through his work with artists like Spank Rock, Kid606, Ellen Alien, and Otto Von Schirach (on such labels as Tigerbeat6, Bpitchcontrol, or his own Daly City imprint), then perhaps you've read about him in the Village Voice, URB, XLR8R, or SF Bay Guardian. Or heard his tracks while you were watching Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, or Ray Barbee on Fuel TV. Yeah, we didn't exactly discover this guy. But we're honored to share this exclusive set with our listeners.
